Thanks for this, I'm a complete novice and thinking of buying my first used caravan, so I'm definitely doing my research before I buy. This video gives newbies like me a good idea of the signs to watch out for especially internally. I trust my nose to try and detect that initial 'earthy' damp smell but as some some patches can be small this isn't always noticeable.
I bought a Bailey Senator 5 Wyoming and it is a beautiful caravan but suffer exactly from the symptoms you have shown here, both in the bathroom above the toilet and around the front windows. It isn't a major problem for me but I am going to have to tackle it at some point. You video highlighting Bailey issues was informative and invaluable. You are just up the road from me, here in Durham so I may well call in one day to peruse your stock. Anyway, I have subscribed so keep the vids coming and buy a foam pad for you mic! :)
We brought a brand New 2008 Bailey Ranger 540/6 caravan, It was are pride and joy at just under £13,000 we had it well looked after but damp started to show after 1 year around all the windows this was done under warranty, but Bailey made it very hard and where not helpful at all. The damp just kept coming in different places in the caravan which where fixed but then it would show some were else so we got rid of it in 2015 we only got £1300 back. I WOULD NEVER BUY ANOTHER BAILEY CARAVAN
I've ended up working in a remote location and Living in a Bayley Senator caravan. when I first moved it up here we found a leak in a roof on the first night. My father and I thought we had it sorted but we've found other leaks which is rather frustraiting. I hadn't realised it was such a common problem
What is the best make of caravan in your opinion. Its my 1st one have 2 kids. So looking for a 5 or 6 berth. Quite fancied the bailey ranger . But now am uncertain after seeing your video. I have zero experience. Thanks for your advice . 👍🏽 cheers Kenny
Hi looking at baileys 2007 with island bed at rear and both sides have damp pimpling from awning rail has been resealed would I be right in saying potential floor could need done too and could you tell me how much it’s worth thanks FANTASTIC VIDEOS BY THE WAY THANKS
I have a ranger with this problem. I have it covered at the moment while I find time to fix it....I did the cracks in the plastic already, it had no real damp in it, but when I uncovered it this year for a few weeks it got damp in the corner, about the size of my hand, covered it again quickly, obviously its got no worse as a result of the timely covering up and damp checks leading to the discovery. I use a pinless damp meter, not 100% accurate for sure at the price, but it does at least tell you where it is. But as you'll know you do have to have some idea about how caravans are built to rule out false positives caused by fixings and wiring inside the walls etc. I'm guessing the biggest problem with resealing the roof straps is work that's been done in the past and the possibility of chewed up screw heads.....
Hello can you help am going to look at a Bailey Senator wyoming 2006 ,L shaped seating and a fixed bed twin axle, I have just wanted your video on the damp issues are these in that group of highly likely to have damp, the guy said it has no damp and every thing has been tested. Just wondering what you think. Any advice would be appreciated Thanks Neil
I have to totally agree with you. I/we repair damp vans and regularly get asked to quote. Customers don't understand why they are looking at around £2-3000 depending on the amount of damp it has. I tell them the same thing that it's so lobour intensive and can take weeks of work stripping and rebuilding without the cost of materials.
I bought a 1993 Bailey years ago, loads of damp but it was an amazing van. I’ve just bought a 2002 Bailey and I think this was before they had the damp issue as it’s pre Allu-tech.
Thank you so much for this extremely helpful information. Please can I ask about the Bailey Unicorn S2 2013 model - a model I'm interested in. Are you aware of any water ingress problems with the model. Any advice will be gratefully received Richard
Hi we've made another video about unicorn models and where to look for damp in these :) ua-cam.com/video/vyOvH7kGLts/v-deo.html&ab_channel=CaravanSource
Realistically If you're buying a caravan for a few grand, does it matter? Genuine question How long would it take for thr van to become unusable? Do people live with it? Seal up the points that weather is getting in and put with it, is that advisable on a cheap van?
Ok, im going to ask an honest question? Been looking for a new van for a while now, and see so many dealers asking top money for Leaky Lunars and Elddis solid range, now everyone know these vans are a no no . Why are dealers still asking top money for them? My guess is, they buy them cheap, slap a tube of sealer around then sell them on making massive profit. Am i wrong?
Any one thinking of buying a Bailey Caravan should look at the factory tour on UA-cam the alu-tech system and the way the side walls are made they are so flimsy it is beyond belief they also use the AL-KO chassis members with no torsional rigidity whatsoever, the body of those caravans is flexing all the time they are on the move and that is why they all leak, what amazes me is they don't disintegrate at the fist bump in the road.
I’ve had a 2007 Bailey Senator Vermont for 7 years and yes it has water ingress , I was looking to change and as we love the Bailey have looked at over a dozen, every one has the same issues, it is well known that they all leak, and it’s a manufacturing defect, considering the extent of this issue, has no one taken Bailey to task and sued them? Seems like a potential Diesel-gate on the Horizon 😢
Great video, very informative. You mention this was a problem mid 2000's, was it resolved by the time 2009 vans came out? I am hoping to see a 2009 van soon and would love to know if it was rectififed by 2009. Cheers.
you'd think after all these years they'd have better construction techniques - water should not be getting in to caravans - i have one of those roof spoilers on my 96 conniseur , a whole lot of screws to hold it on , which means a whole lot of holes and potential problems not even talking about the join line where it meets the roof
My answer is any make that suites you but a dry one with everything working.... Only way to ensure that is if its been serviced recently, they're out there you just got to find em
I bought a senator from a large auction site in Hereford, who lets unscrupulous dealers sell there damp caravans with out a proper description , they just manage to forget to put it in the listing, and when challenged, they are not interested, disgusting, unprofessional behavior.
Any caravan make and model can suffer damp dont forget you will only hear comments from people who have had problems you want hear from all the millions of Bailey owners that have had no issues at all
Yes we've stated this in our other videos. We've bought and sold hundreds of vans over 10 years now this is a very common problem so we are highlighting this particular issue to help people. We have other videos on general issues...
Why not get mad about something important... plenty suffering going on in the world... I've made plenty other videos with good sound... for free.. to help people like you (you're welcome) and read the comments on this one. Plenty other people made it through and got something out of it.
If i make a video or take pictures and it/they turn out crap, even parts of the vid - i do it again - like everything else in life , you do your best. Ive watched numerous of your other videos and they sound OK.@@CaravanSource
...Do a voice over and reupload this video or I''ll never come back. Plenty of other sites to visit without the shoddy video. Respect your audience and have some standards if you want use Utube!

Hi, so if you stripped it back and the frame had been affected what do you do then?

Thankyou so much for this vidio we are thinking of buying another second hand caravan 2005 has given us plenty information cheers
I use two pieces of copper wire ,to scan the van , without touching anything ,same way of traceing water pipes underground.
I bought a 1993 Bailey years ago, loads of damp but it was an amazing van. I’ve just bought a 2002 Bailey and I think this was before they had the damp issue as it’s pre Allu-tech.
what about the Hymer Nova? Any week points?
Really useful - Thanks
What are the best weather resistant 2000 - 2010 vans ? Looking for something 3 - 10k to be outside year round

Seal up the points that weather is getting in and put with it, is that advisable on a cheap van?
What did you say?
Can't you just mute that outside and go over indoors?
Ok, im going to ask an honest question?

Very informative, thank you
sorry cant make out your video at times because of the wind you`ll have to muffle your mike.
Hi going to look at a 2011 bailey pegasus 514 any known issue on this model and year of van
Yes indeed we've done a video on here... need to look at under the floor

yeah , bunch of scumbags - still cant design and produce a decent van after decades

I have the exact same problem on my Bailey Ranger.
I bought one in saudi a couple of months ago , It turned into a disaster with the extra hottness and Humidity
Cant listen to this vid as the noise just takes over
cant hear a word for the wind noise
you'd think after all these years they'd have better construction techniques - water should not be getting in to caravans - i have one of those roof spoilers on my 96 conniseur , a whole lot of screws to hold it on , which means a whole lot of holes and potential problems not even talking about the join line where it meets the roof
cheers pal
Quite worrying these water ingress problems. Can you recommend certain makes that are better than others or are they all the same?
My answer is any make that suites you but a dry one with everything working.... Only way to ensure that is if its been serviced recently, they're out there you just got to find em

Had 3 bailey caravans between 2004 and 2006 and all 3 suffered leaks so repaired and moved on quickly.
Everybody knows bailey vans are full of damp
All makes of caravans get damp even coachmans
OMG... Really? Why on earth release such a poor video. Impossible to watch, or rather listen to.
wind noise makes content impossible to listen to
You should redo this video and use a proper mic.
wind noise is ridiculous and get youself a step ladder to show what youre talking about up high
Sad these manufacturers are still making crappy products after decades of ''experience''
WHY NOT JUST MAKE A VIDEO WHERE YOU CAN BE HEARD ???? - as soon as you played this back you would have realised it had terrible sound !!
Why not get mad about something important... plenty suffering going on in the world... I've made plenty other videos with good sound... for free.. to help people like you (you're welcome) and read the comments on this one. Plenty other people made it through and got something out of it.
