What pissed me off was that Liu Kang wasn’t even mad at Shang Tsung and that’s supposed to be his nemesis. They have been downplaying Liu kang so hard in these last few MK adaptations.
I'll never understand why they didn't choose to adapt The Great Kung Lao's story & MK: Mythologies. As HBOmax series to establish the history of the MK Tournament, Outworld, NetherRealm & canonical events in the lore
That's because the fans know the material and are passionate about their favorite fictions. Hollywooders just skims through wiki pages and and takes out 80% of the boring (by which I mean important) aspects of the source.
@@MellowDarkflower that and because they have their own think tanks while fans use the internet and can talk to eachother and debate which idea is better or not as well what you said know the material and are passionate, but theres a problem in that, of which letting fans influence your work granted yes they give you what you need to keep up but fans are not the artist whos making the art(using artist as a metaphor for an example) so there has to be a balance of letting fans influence your work and not letting the fans control the artist, the best way i can see of that was the case of movie sonic's look being changed due to the fans
Well, fans are good at making "it should've been like that! " kind of videos, but filmmaking is a pretty complex process, so there is no way to be sure that these ideas will translate well through the film production.
It kinda like looking at the simpsons episode idea where Bart and Lisa write their idea for a Itchy and Scratchy episode which shows fans like myself know what could work
I laughed when Liu Kang said "Fatality, for Kung Lao". Mileena could've just been the one to kill Kung Lao, and Liu Kang vs Mileena happening. Which would've then made for an interesting dynamic between Liu and Kitana in the next movie, Liu thinking it's Mileena resurrected, and then falling for the bff killer lookalike. Sonya help defeat Kabal cause his ties with Kano.
It always bothers me that movie makers already have a ton of source material and blueprints on what to do. They just refuse to do it. Who the heck was asking for a mortal kombat movie that doesn’t focus on the tournament? Who the hell was asking for a new original character to be the protagonist instead of Liu Kang? And who in the fuck was saying this was made for the fans?
The director said in multiple interviews that they were remaining faithful to the lore and honouring the characters. Taking one look at the trailers proves that was a lie. Didn't even need to see the film. Heck, the fact Cole was set to be the main protagonist was evident enough to call BS.
never forget that in the 90s we got 2 movies with a Chinese actor in the lead role because... the main character of the game was Chinese. no other reasons. no race quotas, no tokenism (aside from the portrayal of Jax in Annihilation, but no one's saying the movie's good anyway). oh, and we also got a TV show about the Great Kung Lao.
I like 4thSnake's story a lot more. But race aside, I think Johnny will be the character which replaces Kano. I think they're just baiting us with the sequel, which sucks because the Cole's story is way too generic, adding Johnny in first is better.
Personally, I think that the best choice for replacement of Cole Young is either Kenshi or Takeda. Both of them already have close ties to scorpion, but this time we can just make it familial. If we choose Kenshi, we can say that the sword that he uses is of the Shirai Ryu and his tie to scorpion. Though personally, I think takeda is the better option as he is a direct disciple of scorpion. We could say that Kenshi abandoned Takeda to keep him safe, just like in the game. Thus setting him up for a sequel

@@akilcharles3473 They did exactly that with Kitana in MK11. She always looked more Greek, Egyptian or Hispanic (like Talisa Soto). This game she's pretty much Mulan cosplaying Kitana. And it makes even less sense as Sindel and Jerrod look nothing like Asians.
@@mr.awesome6011 Not only that, I just now realizing some similarities from this film that ties to MK Annihilation that raises some red flags. 1. Being of course race swapping with both Mileena and Jade, 2. The whole dragon marking in that movie is basically the same as a dragon tattoo in the other one, 3. Johnny Cage not barely being in the movie. And 4. No tournament. MK legacy weirdly enough does a better story and lore wise but still not all that great.
Nice idea. Another route they could've taken, with even less changes: Replace Kano with Jonny Cage as the movie's comedic relief guy if you need to have Cole, have him, but have him capable and with a personality. Pragmatic to the point of being ruthless in combat, but with a compassionate side too. Have Bi-Han act as his personal slasher movie villain while Scorpion keeps getting in Sub-Zero's way. And in the end when Cole's powers awaken, it turns out that he's a cryomancer. And that Cole Young is actually Kuai Liang. He and Bi-Han were separated when they were kids. Their mother ran away with Kuai Liang, while Bi-Han stayed with their father, a Lin Kuei assassin. Honestly, I actually thought that was the route they were going to take with Cole because they couldn't POSSIBLY be so stupid as to introduce an OC as the protagonist of a movie based on the franchise with tons of iconic and beloved characters, right? Ugh.
"Ok, we're making a new Mortal Kombat movie, who should the lead be?" "Well, a fish out of water character is good, how about Johnny Cage?" Director: I didn’t want a white guy as the lead MK fans with smarts: So what not give the Cole role to Liu Kang? The actual Asian character? Liu Kang is the lead and Kung Lao is his partner (Rush Hour style). Raiden tells the two about the Mortal Kombat tournament and let’s the two enter and are assailed by Outworld assassins. They are Kintaro, Baraka, and Mileena. The two are outmatched but Liu uses his fire powers for the first and wins, killing Kintaro. Baraka and Mileena retreat and inform Shang Tsung about their loss and Liu Kang’a power. The generic heroes gets invited to the island for a tournament happens. Liu Kang and Kung Lao have rivalry with Baraka and Mileena. The other Earthrealmera do their thing. Mileena defeats (not kills cause he escapes via hat teleport) Kung Lao. Liu Kang kills Baraka with a fire fatality making Shang Tsung more interested in stealing Liu’s soul. Liu Kang would fight Shang Tsung and almost gets his soul ripped out but his fire powers again kicks in and wins the day. He’ll shape the fire into a dragon and beats Shang. Liu doesn’t kill him because his honor doesn’t allow it. Shang Tsung retreats with his warriors to Outworld and reports to Shao Kahn setting up the sequel. How easy could this have been?!
I like your take :-) As for the Johnny love saga, I think what could happen is this- Johnny and Sonya met because he was making a movie, as you expressed. Instead of getting married and then divorced however, they had a whirlwind romance that didn't work out, and Cassie is the result. Johnny gets Cassie because he can provide a better life and Sonya, being a young career solider at this time, isn't interested in being a mom. Johnny moved on and married Cindy, but was never really happy w/ her, because he's still in love w/ Sonya. Sonya contacts him about the MK tournament because they were once family, and while she won't admit it, she still loves Johnny and is beginning to regret letting him and Cassie go. Johnny is tempted to rekindle their romance, but is still very angry over how their relationship ended and feels that Sonya abandoned him and Cassie. Plus, he wants to be a good husband to his current wife and father to Cassie. The wife and Sonya bicker because they love Johnny and want him to choose her. Meanwhile, Sonya, Johnny and Cassie begin to repair their broken relationships w/each other. Cas wants dad to be happy, but she also wants her parents to reunite (she doesn't hate her stepmom, she just wants her birth parents to get back together). In time, Sonya and Cindy develop a begrudging respect for each other and their place in Johnny and Cassie's life. Cindy is killed at some point and Johnny was unable to save her (maybe Kano or Kabal kill her, IDK). He loses his confidence, feeling that if he can't protect his wife, he certainly can't help protect Earth. They bury his wife and Johnny, heartbroken and despondent, walks away from Sonya and Cas. Sonya tells him that he's running away. This sparks an argument and Sonya confesses that she never stopped loving Johnny and Cas. She admits she used her career as a way to run from her problems (being young and unprepared for motherhood and a serious relationship) and she pleads w/ Johnny to not make the mistake she did in turning his back on his family. Cas comes in and tells him that he's needed by everyone, but especially her. Johnny comes back. At some point he faces the man who killed Cindy and kills him. This victory gives him what he needs to grieve and restores his confidence. He, Cas, and Sonya fight w/ the Heroes and win. Afterwards, Sonya, Johnny and Cassie go out to eat and catch up. Cassie takes a pic of them and gives it a "heart" frame and posts it to social media, telling the world that America's Hottest Action Star just reunited w/ his first leading lady, hopefully this time for good. :-) The End. The Very Cheesy End. :-)

I also heard about the reason why Johnny couldn't be in the movie and thought "well, if they really want to appeal to the chinese viewers, then why didn't they make the main character Liu Kang, Kung Lao or Kenshi?" @@SonicXtreme99akaCreeperMario Jax wasn't a major character or the main character so they probably didn't care and Black Panther they censored the poster so it indicates China does have a racism problem.
The 1995 Mortal Kombat film is still the best one, even by default because they managed to not screw up. Do the other movies and media have something against the idea of Liu Kang defeating Goro (and/or Shang Tsung) and becoming the Mortal Kombat champion?
I say keep Sonya as Cassie’s mother from a prior marriage/relationship with Johnny and have her Mortal Kombat obsession(maybe setting up her dad or brother as having been slain by Goro or Shang Tsung for some personal stakes) be what drove them apart and led to Sonya losing custody of Cassie to Johnny. I always thought the catalyst for Johnny’s involvement in the tournament in the 95 film being Shang Tsung posing as his sensei was pretty cool, so we use that as the template for the story getting him involved, but he’s ambushed by Sub-Zero and Jax and Sonya save his bacon. So his previous skepticism over Mortal Kombat’s existence that destroyed his relationship with Sonya is addressed, maybe have some of the subsequent scenes with the two have them trading quips and jokes to show their old chemistry, and we get the audience in his shoes with the reveal of the truth. And yeah, have his current wife die to Hydro or some other minor villain that gets some fleshing out(Rain was notably cut from the film, so maybe he could be used in Goro’s place for an established face instead of a minor comic character), thus allowing Johnny and Sonya to reconnect as well as Cassie reuniting with her mother. The idea of Sonya instead being Cassie’s stepmother or “cool aunt” doesn’t gel with me because part of Cassie’s character is that she strongly resembles Sonya but takes more after Johnny but her character growth leads to her embodying both of her parents as time goes on. Sure, it would be a bit of a contrived coincidence that Johnny’s ex-wife just so happened to save his ass in this new version, but worse things have happened. And it would be trivial to setup Sonya’s conspiracy theorist credentials in early scenes of Johnny spending time with Cassie and his current wife with him snarking about her being crazy and hoping Cassie doesn’t turn out like her mother or something before the wool’s pulled off of his eyes.
0:17 cause he was a white guy and the producer didn't think it was right to have a white guy be one of the lead heroes in this movie. Ignoring that they could've just made Liu Kang the lead and made Johnny Cage the comic relief/audience surrogate. But nah, let's just add this boring asian guy who has never been in any of the 11 plus Mortal Kombat games.
Absolutely agree with you on majority of this. My only 2 changes would be: Change Hyrdo to Reptile. This way you can have Johnny struggle with him in the first fight at Sonya's base- forcing Kano to still "kill" Reptile by pulling out his heart. You can then have Shang Tsung save Reptile's soul and put it into a more humanoid ninja body for fan-service. Then later on for the Goro-replaced fight at Johnny's, Reptile kills Johnny's wife and forces him to unlock his green power and finally defeat Reptile on his own. My other change would be to change Mileena into Scarlett. The only memorable line that Mileena says in the movie is "This is not the blood of a champion. You're death has no meaning." I can see Scarlett saying this instead. Instead of teleporting through portals, she could just disappear in blood like the game. Then she can fight Sonya at the temple and later Johnny in the final battle. Maybe Johnny underestimates her for being a woman, so she gets the upperhand- prompting Sonya to help him take her down. This would also not ruin the Miileena/Kitana dynamic and that can be saved for when they eventually go to their realm. Just my two cents. Great video though!
Goro in the OT was an honourable warrior I'd like to see him fighting Johnny, be on the winning edge, but after seeing him fighting even with no chance regognize his potential, and spare him so he can get stronger for the actual torunament.
I think they could introduce baraka, not kill him in a stupid way, and kill random tarkatans instead of nitara or other characters, they also say that Reiko is a general but leaves without a troop wtf XD
Half white with a (mostly white) family to boot. Cole couldn’t get an Asian or otherwise ethnic wife or a more ethnic daughter? Wait, what am I even saying? It should have been Liu Kang period.
I was gonna comment that I would’ve dropped the whole having a family/daughter plot line for Johnny to solely have him be a failed actor, but I guess if you did wanted to build up Cassie for future movies I guess It would be alright. Also If that would’ve been the case then you could add in a throw away line about Jax being married who has a daughter to set up Jackie
Exactly what i thought, i also wondered why they didn't just have Johnny as the main character instead of this dumbass OC as him being the main character doesn't change a lot to the story. Johnny could have gone to the MMA due to his acting career slowly dying and since he did his own stunts he thought he would do good in the ring which is constantly proven false by him losing every fight, Jax comes to him Sub-Zero attacks them but instead of Jax having to convince Johnny to back off and let him fight Sub-Zero on his own Johnny is much more cowardly and he simply drives off. Rest of the movie is pretty much the same except instead of him going back to his family from Outworld he instead pussies out and runs away until Goro personally comes to his apartment to kill him, Johnny recieves an ass whooping and almost dies until his powers activate out of survival instincsts and the fight becomes more evenly matched, he still struggles against the Mortal Kombat champion but due to his training in Outworld he actually proves himself a competent fighter and manages to defeat Goro, before he manages to finish him Raiden zaps him back to help them and in the future he and Goro could have that rivalry they are known for.
Cole is the male version of Rey from the Star Wars trilogy. A cardboard cutout character created by a director that cannot direct. I hope there is no sequel, otherwise it will probably turn out like the resident evil movie franchise.
That's shockingly great, i mean the story is perfect in this version and i also love how this rewrite doesn't fall into the video game curse by actually trying to be an interesting movie rather than copy pasting stuff from the games
I still think that the first movie should’ve been either Mythologies or special forces, so we actually know some of the characters by the time that the tournament starts!
I don't think a Special Forces film would be necessary. I get that Sonya and Kano might have history, but I don't feel like it needs exploring so in-depth to warrant it's own arc/film. An adaption of Mythologies would be great though. Setting up the Lin Kuei, it's many characters, their relationships and even explore the early stages of cyberization. This might be an opportunity to include Kano and maybe Sonya too. For example: Lin Kuei and Black Dragon are making a deal regarding cyber tech, and Sonya leads/commands a squad to stop it. I think it would be great to establish Scorpion more here though. Set him up as someone struggling to balance his honour and doing the right thing, over his loyalty to his clan and taking actions which eventually lead him to be reborn in the Netherrealm. Show how much he cares for his friends and family to really sell the imact it has on him when he later learns of their slaughter. And also set up how he later tries to redeem himself by protecting / allying with Kuai Liang. The fight between Bi Han and Scorpion would obviously be the climax, and I personally would show Scorpion's soul being dragged down to the Netherrealm and him being driven into a blind rage with his burning hatred and thirst for revenge, turning him into the spectre of vengeance. Post credits scenes could be a large, straw hat wearing figuring hiring the Lin Kuei to assassinate a sorcerer, and Scorpion being met with a large lightning bolt while slaying demons in the Netherrealm. I feel like the character arcs for Scorpion and the Lin Kuei members are already in full swing by the time of the MK1 tournament. And it would allow more focus to be put on them if set up separately like this. Then the MK1 tournament movie could focus more on the usual lot (Raiden, Kang, Cage, Blade, Tsung, Goro, and even setting up Kung Lao a bit here). While, I'd make most changes to adapting Mythologies, to shift the focus away from Quan Chi / Shinnok - I'd stick far more closely to the story for MK1 through Deception. And here we have an outline for 7 films.
@@EndoScorpion I honestly think that Shinnok should be the mastermind behind everything! i think the idea of Cassie not being Sonya's biological daughter is such a interesring idea that honestly i wish it was used in canon, it could be a better way to create drama between Cassie and past Sonya in 11 and it would be unique in that it would break the cliche of the step mom always being a asshole
So, Johnny Cage was yeeted because they were afraid of a white savior trope that didn't need to exist in the first place if they'd just stuck with Liu Kang from the start.
The only thing I would change (to your draft, if I were to change the movie myself I would also start from scratch) would be to swap Kano and Kabal, like you said in your other video, maybe Kabal is this Sonia's partner which Kano "kills" by burning him to death to raise the stakes, basically the equivalent of Kung Lao death, and then after Sonia and Johnny kill Kano it is revealed Kabal survived and is being convinced by other Black Dragon members, maybe a cameo from Jarek, that he was left to die and should join back with the bad guys.

Only issue I have with your version is that Kabal is still bad guy who works for Shang Tsung even though he should be on the side of heroes. I can imagine him appearing as a normal human, joining heroes alongside Kano, but, unlike him, he refuses to betray Earthrealm. After that, Shang burns him with his fire, but Raiden manages to save his life and heal him to some degree. This is pretty damn good. I would prefer this. Honestly my idea was if they wanna do the marvel thing then do a 3 pre movies setting up the tournament. Shaolin monks setting up Liu Kang, Kung lao, Raiden and maybe kitana. Special forces with Jax Sonya and Kano and then fire and ice which is the scorpion and bi han story. The mortal Kombat is the avengers moment where all these characters come together and we introduce Johnny as the psuedo main character but really it's mostly a team up film.
Sadly every movie follows a "how to make a movie"-textbook with blanks and stereotypes. And I mean that. I had a workshop many years ago and storytelling was a part of it. Out teacher gave us papers where meticolous every part of a universal movie was described. We took random movies and everything fell into place like in the book. That was eye-opening.
"Well you have to remember... the mortal kombat movies have always been cheesy and nothing spectacular with unorganized story." yeah because of people who use that as a way to let bad quality slide.
Before the movie came out I was sure that Cole was gonna become Johnny at the end of the film, go to Hollywood and call himself "Johnny Cage" as a stage name. NOPE! Wow.
I like your idea for Johnny Cage arc but I have suggestion: Instead of killing his wife in the middle of the story, I think the film should start with Cindy already passed away and Johnny having to take care of Cassie on his own, while still trying to save his caree as an actor. This would make the moment in which he awakens his power much more symbolic, with Johnny choosen to do the responsible thing and protect his daughter.

The fact that the games and the animated movie take inspiration from that really boils my blood. I could rant for hours about how damaging that was to the lore and to all characters mentioned above.

I’ve noticed with many modern Movies, Games, and Shows. The fans always do better than the actual writers and creators, except the ass kissers
It kinda like looking at the simpsons episode idea where Bart and Lisa write their idea for a Itchy and Scratchy episode which shows fans like myself know what could work
@AT Productions true it always happened way before nowaday, but i feel that here it got more attention to that or something idk

I like 4thSnake's story a lot more.

Poor Snake.

Another route they could've taken, with even less changes:
Replace Kano with Jonny Cage as the movie's comedic relief guy
if you need to have Cole, have him, but have him capable and with a personality.

This was perfect, and your analysis at the end was spot on too...
Leave it to 4th Snake to come up with a better plot for an MK Movie than the average writer from Hollywood.
Director: I didn’t want a white guy as the lead
MK fans with smarts: So what not give the Cole role to Liu Kang?
Actually the producer is the one who said the whole White guy thing. Still stupid but figured I'd clarify.

The End. The Very Cheesy End. :-)
When I saw the thumbnail I just said "oh no.." knowing how much the movie did not impress. I also heard about the reason why Johnny couldn't be in the movie and thought "well, if they really want to appeal to the chinese viewers, then why didn't they make the main character Liu Kang, Kung Lao or Kenshi?" The 1995 Mortal Kombat film is still the best one, even by default because they managed to not screw up. Do the other movies and media have something against the idea of Liu Kang defeating Goro (and/or Shang Tsung) and becoming the Mortal Kombat champion?
Bout to get Kronika’s hourglass to wipe Cole Young from existence.
Seriously chief,
You wouldkill it making your own story.
Great video.
My only 2 changes would be:
Change Hyrdo to Reptile.
Goro in the OT was an honourable warrior
I'd like to see him fighting Johnny, be on the winning edge, but after seeing him fighting even with no chance regognize his potential, and spare him so he can get stronger for the actual torunament.

Yah when I saw cole young killed goro, i was like ”you kidding me?” Like a little bit of me went like, “that was not supposed to go like that.
I always thought Kung Lao was more of Goro's rival
He technically is
I mean I guess

I’ve not even seen the real film yet and I got a feeling I already like your version better
Arcana could be the name of Johnny's green energy manipulation.
Can we eventually talk about the Wasted Potential of Kasumire (P5 Royal)?
wow look how with just a little tweaking they could've fixed this part of the movie. Also I still dont get why they thought Johnny would be the main lead when Liu was always the lead.
having sonya as cassie's stepmother would feel weird, especially if future movies adapt the mother-daughter issues they had, but having johnny as the main character of the "before tournament" movie is a good idea, also i like the idea of giving a minor character like hydro a chance to shine, that would make him more popular to casual fans, and it is better than the whole caveman reiko and mute jobber nitara, good video
PS: can i suggest a parallel plot that i had in mind??? i dont know if it could work for a video and it is kinda silly but still
Damn dude. I was making a video that was literally this.
There's literally no reason Cole couldn't have been Johnny, and the washed up actor doing MMA is exactly what I was gonna do. Also having Cassie already be around. I was gonna go the "They're divorced" trope tho lmao.
Instead of armoring up, he's just get the green glow. And that red fist uppercut Cole does to Goro reminds me of Johnny's red energy stuff.
Using Hydro was a GREAT idea. Characters like Hydro and the Rock ninja need more love xD
Maybe Cole fakes being a stunt man or something to get close to Johnny. Maybe he's Mocap.
The fact that Cole Young is the main Kharacter and not Siro really left me sad faced.
Who?
THE GRRRRREATEST MORTAL KOMBAT KHARACTER!!!!!!
@@jcjc592 Siro was one of the 3 focal kharacters in the 90's TV show Mortal Kombat Conquest it was a prequel series about The Great Kung Lao and Siro was one of his companions alongside a thief girl named Taja
@@KeyBladeMaster-Dan Oh thanks for telling me
@@jcjc592 No problem ^__^
I'm convinced Johnny Cage wasn't in the movie because his style of humor would not fly in today's culture.
I can't wait until you make a movie, that shit is going to be a downright banger.
We couldn't have had Johnny because his already established abilities didn't involve 'Plot Armor'. That phrase was the first note made when creating the character. The rest was box ticking.
i think the idea of Cassie not being Sonya's biological daughter is such a interesring idea that honestly i wish it was used in canon, it could be a better way to create drama between Cassie and past Sonya in 11 and it would be unique in that it would break the cliche of the step mom always being a asshole
2021 people won't accept,
The election,
Mortal Kombat.
God, that Hydro and Subzero Tag team match against Johnny and Scorpion sounds next level awesome.
How has the MK team not hired you yet? (Outside of hating you for you calling them out on their terrible story telling)
Hydro is the notMK1/2/3 part of the cast right?
@@drivanradosivic1357 as far as i'm aware, he's not been part of any of the games themselves. just expanded material
@@drivanradosivic1357 He appears in the "MK: Blood and Thunder" comics during the events of MK1 game. In MK11 his power appears as Konsumable in the Towers of Time.
My only problem with it is that if they decided to introduce Rain later on it could confuse some people because both are ninjas and use water as their main way of attack
If they used Tremor instead it could tie in with the Kano/Kabal storyline and avoid confusion with the audience
Hydro would be an interesting pick, since he hasn't appeared in almost nothing until this day,at the point I tough he was fan made when I've head about him
Goro is already dead and the Tournament hasn’t even started... they made some terrible choices
Then, at the end, they could show him getting his mask and equipment from Special Forces, but he doesn't join them and he wanders of instead. He could get his super speed in sequel through some magic shenanigans that's typical in MK universe.
They should have just titled this movie “Anihalation 2” woke to broke edition.
It’s hilarious how truthful your comment really is to the 2021 film that 2021 film really is just annihilation 2 woke to broke edition.
That’s brilliant u should be the writer for the movie u got a lot of great ideas in ya head and u should be the writer and join netherrealm damn ure damn good bro
This is so much better which makes the movie hurt THAT much more.
NOPE! Wow.
If 4th Snake and Mauler did a joint review its over for MK
I like your idea for Johnny Cage arc but I have suggestion: Instead of killing his wife in the middle of the story, I think the film should start with Cindy already passed away and Johnny having to take care of Cassie on his own, while still trying to save his caree as an actor. This would make the moment in which he awakens his power much more symbolic, with Johnny choosen to do the responsible thing and protect his daughter.
I'd pay twice to watch this movie over what actually came out
This was very enjoyable, definitely agree you made some very eye opening points thanks for this video mr snake
Already your idea sound better than the whole movie combined.
Lol MKX GENERATIONS literally had him training Cassie in a gym then going to fight in an underground MMA match ..literally
it’s sad that these small simple ideas would’ve made me so much more intrigued in the movie vs what we actually got
Someone hire this man as a writer for all future films!
