- 'Disgusting! People react to Edinburgh rubbish chaos as bin strike takes hold. Bin chaos which has made Edinburgh resident's lives a misery has spread across Scotland, as refuse collectors in other major cities including Glasgow and Dundee join the strike. The industrial action has made Edinburgh an 'international embarrassment' as rubbish has piled high (pictured) whilst the city hosts the Fringe Festival. From today, staff at 13 local authorities, including Glasgow, Dundee, and Aberdeen, will join those in Edinburgh and strike over a pay dispute. Trade unions were offered a 5% pay rise, but this was described as an 'insulting' amount in the face of the cost of living crisis.

The bin men around here barely do their job. Abandoned bins left in the middle of the streets blocking buggies and wheelchairs, missed collections, and overflowing bins in parks. To be honest this situation isn't much worse than when they are working. It is a low-skilled minimum wage job. Aldi is currently recruiting and pays the same if you want a change of job. Blind support of strike action as usual. What about the other council workers earning below living wage? Do they get ignored?
There are many many people struggling, but because the bin men create a public health hazard we should give them more money. What about the folks that can't pull such a stunt?
Disgusting? I am more disgusted at the way we treat workers who perform services that are essential to the functing of our country!

Here in Seattle they make 6 figures. A lot more than we make. We have recycling trucks one week, garbage every week and compost another week. All different trucks, etc. We're all feeling the inflation.

There is no rubbish outside Sturgeons Bute House because the SNP pay a contractor £43 million to lift the rubbish at public buildings. What’s wrong with using the local services ? Another ‘waste’ of taxpayers money.
It’s a shame Edinburgh is such an amazing city. Hope it gets sorted and yes salute to the rubbish collectors that do an amazing job. It’s not pretty how it is without them 🤢

Hardly slavery. They’re always free to change their employment. They would have done so a long time ago if the job was that terrible. And no, I wasn’t participating in some dumb and pointless stunts. They weren’t the only people working during the first lockdown.

you have absolutely no idea...on an average day a small city will put out anywhere around 40 tons of rubbish.
I pick between 100 and 150 houses and average between 3 and 4 tons per day.
I live in Edinburgh and they're also striking teachers in schools and it's been rubbish everywhere
Support freedom to strike. Support military aid to Ukraine while we suffer from energy crisis. Support our politician to mess up the country without considering the interest of the people. Support incompetent politician who can just talk about democracy and human rights whereas UK citizens have already lost their basis right to survive.
Honestly.. It's our own fault. The people are so lazy that they let this happen year upon year. There's no stop unless there's a physical stop and people don't seem to realise this.
I don't know how much they make but if they have to go on strike to get a decent wage then that's what has to be done and people should have solidarity for them instead of criticizing them if they are hard-working people .
I remember decades ago as a 9-year-old girl walking in the pickett circle holding a sign when it was freezing cold out in the winter in the evening when my Dad and others were picketing against greedy General Electric in Philadelphia .
They've been offered 5%, which isn't that bad. The problem is, thanks to the genius governments around the UK, inflation is running at well above 10% at the minute.
Edinburgh is a beautiful city and the tourists are not seeing it at its best they could have waited until after the festival but maybe that was the plan to strike when its at its busiest just waiting on the rats appearing

It's more embarrassing how it got to this stage than the mess on the streets itself. If our local workers here in Bristol do something similar I will do my best to keep our household rubbish contained and then go take them flasks of tea and coffee on the picket line.

In Spain the communal bins are emptied every day. Council tax equivalent of 500euros a year. Pure greed

Aye and Nicola has her bins lifted by "private contractors". That's if she's no swanning off to Denmark to open a "Scottish Embassy"...don't get me started!. Oh well...I'm boldly going there in 24 hrs...hope it's no too smelly!.
I know that my city (79sqkm) has a team of 30 guys doing everything from litter bins, litter picking, pavement weeding, graffitti cleaning, and flytip clearance across the entire city...work that used to be done by 150 guys 15 years ago (all of whom could afford a mortgage on their salary) at a time when the city was considerably smaller and less populated.
Now, the team is a quarter of the size it once was, the city is a quarter bigger, and you can barely make rent on the salary, nevermind a mortgage!

I totally support the strike but it’s not the rubbish not being ‘bagged up that’s the problem, it’s the fact there is no where to put it for the time being. The bags are just ripped open by birds and animals. There are over 50 rats running around the bin area where I live right now, I’m not bagging anything up and I would strongly advise against it right now unless you have the proper equipment. Even the councils and health experts are saying to stay away from it, it’s a complete health hazard. I do get what you’re saying though and I agree with the ‘quit moaning and do something about it yourself’ ethos, I really do agree with you. The Edinburgh council bin rubbish is not the fault of the SNP or Nicola Sturgeon, it is the fault of the Scottish Labour party as they are in charge of the council but what Scotland needs is Independence and the break up of the United Kingdom as the UK is a failed state full of poverty.
Well the Scott's will suffer as they get twice the amount spent on them
