These are just a few of the many notable people buried in Highgate Cemetery. There are other prominent personalities also laid to rest there.
The "Circle of Lebanon" and the "Egyptian Avenue" are two distinct areas within this cemetery.
Circle of Lebanon: The Circle of Lebanon is a circular section of the cemetery located in the eastern part. This area is known for its impressive tombs and elaborate monuments. The name "Circle of Lebanon" derives from the cedar trees from Lebanon that surround the site. Cedars are often associated with the idea of eternity and are considered symbols of strength and immortality. In this section, many tombs belong to wealthy and influential Victorian families who sought to create grand monuments to honor their loved ones.
Egyptian Avenue: The Egyptian Avenue is one of the main thoroughfares within Highgate Cemetery. It cuts through the cemetery from east to west, dividing it into two main parts: the West and the East. The Egyptian Avenue got its name due to the influence of Egyptian architectural style that can be observed in the monuments and mausoleums along the avenue. During the Victorian era, there was a renewed interest in ancient Egypt and Egyptian culture, which led to the popularization of this architectural style at the time. The monuments in the Egyptian Avenue feature elements such as obelisks, sphinxes, and hieroglyphs, enhancing the landscape of the cemetery.
Both the Circle of Lebanon and Egyptian Avenue are considered architectural highlights of Highgate Cemetery. They represent the style and aesthetics of the Victorian era, as well as reflect the desire of many families to create elaborate memorials for their deceased loved ones.
