    Hi Joe, I found your channel while looking at videos for Cobra replicas. You are certainly a skilled DIYer. You opened my eyes as to the cost, time, and complexity of building a car. It shows how much we take for granted each time we get behind the wheel, and the genius of men like Ford who brought us into the Age of the Automobile more than 100 years ago. This video on Silver Sport Transmissions is very informative as I have a 64 Mercury Comet I'd like to upgrade to a 5 speed. Looking forward to the next videos.

      Thanks for the kinds words Mike! I'm getting close to having my Vette out on the road so I can run the TKO through the gears. Over the past few weeks have been rewiring the whole car and fabricated a new sheetmetal dash w/GPS gauges. Doing my best to keep it old-school look with modern technology. Its going to be a great cruiser and I'll have some new videos/content coming soon for the build so stay tuned!

    Outstanding video, had to stop it several times to examine the details. Massaging the exhaust hanger has me intrigued. Tomorrow I’ll be calling SST for a TKX perfect fit going in my 69 Vette.

    Great Video. Great approach as well. A lot of people get easily discouraged when time and funds are not readily available. Love your endurance attitude and perseverance, focus. Im the owner of: 90 zr1, 92 coupe, 99 c5, 2018 wb hc challenger 6sp, and more. I will own a c3 someday soon. Love companies that create modern parts for older cars. Thanks for sharing, God Bless.

    It seems like I found a new channel/series to binge watch. Your skill set and presentation are top notch. Great camera work and just enough voice over to explain everything. I'm another subscriber for the rest of your video content.

    Like some of your other viewers, I came across your channel from FFR research. Your ego to knowledge ratio is one of the most pleasant I’ve seen. What I mean is you seem to be a very nice and humble guy while being very knowledgeable and capable.

    Thanks for the video! I have a 1973 Corvette and have been considering replacing the transmission, too; though it's unlikely I'll do it myself. What made you choose the five speed over the six?

    • @TacoJoe
      @TacoJoe  3 роки тому

      Hey Steven / I really was just looking for an overdrive and anything beyond that is icing. I don’t think you can go wrong with a 6spd though as you’ll have some more versatility on the highway/interstate (as I understand things, the magnum basically gives you 2OD gears instead of 1 / typical final ratio of .8 and .63) / thanks for the comment!

    Your video was very informative, thanks for that, couple of questions. 1) you said something about taking a indicator and indicating the flu wheel a) does a good set of instructions come with the transmission to explain how to do that? b) once you bolt flywheel on, in my experience from past clutch replacements, you cant move flywheel, and bell housing can't be adjusted once bolted to the block and same with the transmission. c) I think I missed something really important on what I should be indicating, so can you elaborate on that for me.
    2) when you get it driveable how tall are the gears? Meaning I had a Rock Crusher in my old Firebird and not sure what the rear differential gear was, I was told it was stock, but I could go zero to seventy mile per hour in first gear, give or take 5 or 10 miles per hour. I don't want to spend $4500.00+ on a transmission that I was told it was the same. I know that they are geared a little different than the Rock Crusher so they may be some differences, so any feedback back would be helpful.
    3) I'm not sure but was the Rock Crusher in the vettes from factor?
    Thanks for any input pros or cons

    • @TacoJoe
      @TacoJoe  6 місяців тому

      Hey @williammorrison1433 - you want to check flywheel flatness with an indicator (magnetic base on the block, nearby stand, etc) -then- you need to turn over the motor by hand from the crankshaft snout in front (lots of aftermarket 1/2" drive SBC sockets that will do this). Not sure spec but likely looking for something .002-003" or less. The clutch will wear together with it over time, but a new or resurfaced flywheel should be nice & flat. After that, you want to bolt on the bell housing and attach an indicator to the flywheel (magnetic) -then- verify bell housing runout is .005" or less on modern transmissions. If you have too much runout, it puts extra stress on the input shaft-case bearing and they will have accelerated wear-could have hard shifting. You correct this by purchasing offset bell housing pins (or you can machine them like I did). From the factory though, if you have the original bell housing and the locating pins are original on the block, you should be good to go! Here's a link for a typical SBC 1/2 crankshaft attachment www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=SBC+1%2F2%22+crankshaft+tool&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

      @@TacoJoe thank you, I'm hoping that I can get what is needed for what needs to be done for my engine. It's a 455,1973 block, I'm trying to keep everything Pontiac other than transmission. Although the basic principles should be the same. Now I have to figure out a way to save your instructions so I can refer back to it once I get to that stage of my build.

    • @TacoJoe
      @TacoJoe  6 місяців тому +1

      hey its not too hard (don't despair) - just get a magnetic base or clamping dial indicator and you'll see its pretty straightforward what you need to verify (its not hard - just need some patience to make sure its right) - Harbor Freight sells a clamping indicator for 40$ and this will do the job to check both flywheel flatness and your bell housing runout too / link @ www.harborfreight.com/clamping-dial-indicator-63656.html

    What’s your rear end ratio? I see your 2800rpm at 60-mph. Can’t wait to see the difference between the two transmissions. Thx

    • @TacoJoe
      @TacoJoe  Рік тому +1

      Hey Mitch- I'll see if I can put together a follow up video - I have a 3.70:1 rear end ratio. The PERFECT ratio would be 3.55:1 because 4th gear runs a tad too high RPM wise at 40mph - then a shift into overdrive and you are at 45-50mph/slightly speeding on the average city streets. That's why I think 3.55's are a sweet spot with the OEM tire size. On the highway: 3.70s are great in OD (I think it's 0.68?). Big picture: an OD transmission upgrade is a excellent choice for a C3 / I think most will like it.

    Hello, my 69 Vette has an armored cable going from the trans to the column under the hood. I know the TKX I just bought will no longer accommodate this feature. I wish to keep it connected at least under the hood for a stock like appearance. What did you do with yours?
    Also did you wire up your Tremec neutral safety to the starter? Thx

    • @TacoJoe
      @TacoJoe  Рік тому +1

      I didn't wire up the neutral safety switch, but it's really easy to do (basically add the switch to the relay circuit for the solenoid). If you want to keep the mechanical speedo drive with the OEM gauge, I'm pretty sure they make make electro-mechanical sender adapters that allow you to keep your OEM gauges - and - will be compatible with a TKX / your vette too. Good luck with the conversion!

    Great video. I'm going to swap a TKX into my 75 C3. Does the installation still use the safety interlock cable at the steering column, or do you disable the feature? Thx for any advice.

    • @TacoJoe
      @TacoJoe  7 місяців тому

      Are you talking about the key cylinder - shaft to the wire harness? I actually removed it from the column and replaced with a modern electronic switch key which feeds power to the hot side of the relays in the car - so - guess I didn't use it / good luck with your upgrade - you will be happy with a TKX from SST!

    Did you opt for close or wide ratio and why? Doing the same for my 76 and not sure wether the close ratio is worth losing a little oomph on the line.

    My C3 is a '78 4-speed and the throw out bearing is going, so when it does I plan on putting in the TKX 5 spd. There is a diy shop near me. I'm mechanically inclined, but really have never worked on cars. Carpentry, electric, plumbing is more in my wheelhouse. Not taking the engine out, approximately how long do think the job will take? Depending on the hours/days, if it's a push $ wise (renting the space vs. paying a shop), I might have a shop do it. Thanks for the video.

      Replacing a transmission is not too hard - key is getting the car high enough off the ground that it's easy to work on / I have a 2 post lift which is nice, but if you manually jack it, having high jack stands is key / thanks for the comment!

    Will this kit work on a 1980 corvette w/ LS one and T56. Out of 1998 ss camaro

    • @TacoJoe

      Check the SST website or give them a call to verify - but - while the rear end is different in an 80, I think location remained the same (thus driveshaft should be same - ie - kit should work)
