Mario Puzo's The Godfather tells a tremendous story. But what touches me most, is the fact, that every family in real life has its own The Godfather-Trilogy.

Read "The Family Corlene". It was a novel based on a screenplay Mario Puzo wrote before he died. It tells how the Corleone's rose to power. How Sonny "made his bones", more of Tom Hagen's history and my favorite story line, how Luca Brasi became Vito's personal enforcer. "I want you to come work for me." "Haven't you heard, I'm il diavolo." "Ci. I want you to be il mio diavolo."

@Smiler Grogan I think it was Stephen Spielberg that once said, Francis is at his best when everything is against him. He's proven that a couple of times now. I enjoyed Godfather Part 3 for what it was. Bram Stokers Dracula was pretty good too. Jack is a guilty pleasure of mine. Only because it saw it when I was young.
I don't think a new beginning, a new ending and material shuffled around throughout will sway people's view on this movie. If you already like the movie as is, this director's cut will just be an interesting new take. You may even prefer the new version. However, if you already hate the movie, a few edits wont make a difference because ultimately the core of the movie will remain. That said, I'm always fascinated and hopeful when someone of Coppola's talent revisits their older work.

It's definitely better than the original cut, but the biggest flaw in my opinion is they ruined the ending. (Spoiler alert even though it been out for years) The last scene where an old Michael dies alone in a garden in Sicily is the perfect ending! It's a complete 180 from Vito's story. Vito came to America, loved his family, was a good honest man, and died happy playing with his grandson. Michael was obsessed with family, he was evil at times and he returns to Sicily, only to die alone with nobody but a stray dog. The new ending simply shows old Michael put on glasses and then fade to black with a quote. It's not as iconic or cinematic and it actually kind of made me mad. It's only 10 more seconds of the scene but the original ending was the only reason I even somewhat liked Godfather Part 3. Oh well. Maybe some people will like the new ending, but I think the original ending was better.
They basically cut and rearranged a bunch of scenes. The beginning flows better and the film has better pacing but there isnt anything super significant

I also felt in serious agreement with actor Robert Duvall, who played "Tom Hagen," when he said that the third movie was not as good as the first two. He also felt that the third "Godfather" was made in 1990 out of financial considerations. After all, will Francis Ford Coppola's new version of the third film be even better than what was previously done in 1990? Who knows?
