      Great. A little slow to emerge from their hibernation in winter, but once they get going... really very special and children find the unusual flowers fascinating too.

      Thank you, that must have been a beautiful sight! It is always wonderful to see plants growing in their native settings. Of course, this is a special compact form., the ones you would have seen would have been taller (the original species).

    Mine are not blooming after purchase and repotting. WHY?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Рік тому +2

      Sometimes, it takes a little while for them to get going again. In fact, each spring they are one of the last perennials to emerge from winter hibernation (and its not unusual to hear of people digging them up because they thought they were dead)!
      So patience is in order, and also (if you haven't already) make sure to "dead-head" them regularly. This is removing the old flower heads to encourage new growth that will lead to renewed flowering throughout the rest of the summer. This is how you will be able to get them to bushier at the base and reblooming regularly, sometimes all the way into early autumn when incidentally, the leaves usually turn lovely shades of yellow!
      You see, if you leave the old flower heads untouched, they will most likely flower just once and put their energy into producing seed heads which are quite pretty but obviously, not nearly as to pretty as the amazing, bright blue balloon-like flowers.
      Also, don't be alarmed if when you snip the tops off, you see white latex sap oozing out from the wounds - this is natural and will dry up to seal the wounds shortly after trimming.
      David says, he never has any issues, but if you have sensitive skin, it would be wise to wear a pair of gloves because sometimes this sap can be irritable.

    I recently bought 2 pots of Platycodon Grandiflorus from a nursery near me. I moved them to planters. They were deadheaded and short like 4 inches when I bought them. Are there ways to help them grow taller?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Рік тому +3

      Ordinary Balloon flowers (Platycodon grandiflorus) is quite variable in height, with ones that usually grow eventually to about 12- 30". It sounds like your plants are still quite young, so in time (especially in the second and third year), they will naturally push up to about these heights. It is not unusual for them to take a year to settle in, build a root system during the first year and then "get going" in subsequent years. So, give them time and I expect they will be taller (some perhaps a bit too tall)!
      As you've probably noticed in this video, we try to grow and offer through our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ nice big, healthy, premium sized plants that can be planted to provide an instant effect. We also carefully select proven performing varieties (like this one) that grow to a specific size range, defined color, and ones that we know are likely to take a good deal of the guess work out of the final effect. 😉💚👌

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Рік тому +1

      Once they get going, they will bloom freely again. In the meantime, keep watering and put down a layer of mulch to help them re-establish.

    What kind of soil do they like to grow and establish?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  3 роки тому +4

      They are not that fussy, just a regular garden soils will be fine. Obviously the better the conditions the better they will perform so when you plant them, follow our suggestions of digging a good generous sized hole, amend the back fill with planting compost, water regularly until they get established and grow away, and perhaps mulch them too (couple of inches deep) and really that is it. They are not that picky, or demanding and should last many years once you get them going. Just bear in mind my comment about them being slow to emerge from dormancy - this is natural... so just give them a little extra time to come up!

    How long does it take the baloon flower to bloom?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  2 роки тому +3

      As I mention around the 2 minute mark, they are notoriously slow to emerge from winter dormancy and have to make growth in spring and early summer, before they start to flower in summer. So, don't be too worried if you don't see anything coming up in the earlier parts of spring, they'll come up and flower in summer. They just need a little more time! 😉💚👍

    Do I need to deadhead them ?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  2 роки тому +3

      Yes, that will help to make the clumps stronger. When you snip the stems, they will "bleed" a little white latex sap, so if you have sensitive skin wear a pair of gloves.

    Mine are wilting. How often should they be watered?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Рік тому +2

      Depends on the weather, time of year, your location, your soil, how recently they've been planted (i.e. have they rooted out into your soil yet (or not)! etc. etc.
      It is tough to give you any specific time period because there are so many variables....
      But essentially, give them a good, deep watering, and then watch the top of the soil, and when it begins to look dry, give them another deep watering, letting it soak in.
      This is David, and to give you a little extra guidance. In my garden a recently planted perennial like this, in early summer will usually need to be watered every 2nd (or other day). But, in hot, drier periods, sometimes they might need a good watering every day!
      Letting the soil dry out a little in between watering bouts is often beneficial because that prevents over-watering and encourages the new roots to expand into the surrounding soil and transition into their new home.
      Obviously, when you notice them wilting and looking dry, water ASAP and usually you will see them perk up within a few hours.
      I hope this helps.

      That's strange, they normally are very reliable performers, and this is something we have never seen on our plants. We wonder if it might be temporary dryness, just at the critical stage of bud development. If this persists you might think about contacting your local extension office or a knowledgeable Master Gardener to take a look and see if they can help you diagnose the issue.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  3 роки тому +2

      Sometimes when we are talking about plants we use the color terms like "blue" in loose, general terms, and that's why it is nice (unlike the historical days of black and white magazines and catalogues) that we are able to see them on video and view the various shades and color for ourselves. Mind you, sometimes each of us, decipher the color hues in different ways and of course the settings on our cameras and screens alter the effects too. So, that's why it is really neat to go along to the garden centers and see the plants for ourselves in reality.
