This was probably the most iconic performance of both Live Aid concerts. Freddie had 70,000 people in the palm of his hand.”Radio GaGa” is the song Lady GaGa took her name from. Freddie’s shorter mike stand was also a tribute to Jimmi Hendrix. RIP Freddie darling. You are still missed.
Im from london. One of the famous British tabloids at the time wrote in reference to QE2 that “for 45 mins… a different Queen ruled England”
Actually Freddies short mike stand was attributed to when they first started out, & they were not popular, playing small pubs & clubs, someonne in the audience jumped up, & smashed Freddies mike stand, & through it at him, but Freddie felt comfortable with the small stand, & decided to keep it.

Freddie sounded this amazing after having laryngitis just the week before. His doctor recommended that he cancel this performance but he ignored the advice and went on to make rock history. You don't need to have that large "note" in the middle of the screen on Queen videos, they're happy to have their fans watch and share them.

Queen doesn't own the copyright to LiveAid. All the artists donated the rights to their performances that day to the famine relief fund.
You also have to remember this is Live Aid concert. Not a Queen concert. In other words, the audience is there for many artists and some may not even be Queen fans. So to me this makes it even more amazing. Freddie captivated that entire audience

Not only is Roger Taylor's drumming overlooked so often. But his backing vocals, which is even more important to this group. Never gets the recognition that it should. Backing up Freddy with his high harmonies.
Yes his voice is very underrated, for him it's a shame because when you have Freddie in the band its obvious his voice is going to get all the plaudits. I'm in love with my car shows just how capable a vocalist rodger is, his high notes are very very impressive when backing up Freddie, and if it was any other band on the planet (bar one or two) he could of been lead singer.
I agree also. They all sing, John Deacon mostly only in studio, Brian is a good backing vocalist and can even sing some lead as he has done on solo projects. Roger could easily have been the lead singer of a rock band .. but when you have Freddie...

Since all of the acts only had 20 minutes to perform, Queen fit in small parts of 6 songs...they used their time so well, better than any of the other acts.
Queens performance here at Live Aid, is considered the best live rock performance ever.

It wasn't their sound stage, anyone in music will tell you how long it takes to set things up and tune along with everything else - that's why it's impressive, especially for the mid 80s. @@celtasnake

In the words of Live Aid organiser Bob Geldof, Queen was the best band of the day. This opinion is shared by critics and Queen at Live Aid is regarded as one of the best live rock music performances ever. By the summer of 1985, Queen was a successful band that had started to draw negative publicity. There was talk that the band was past its prime and front man Freddie Mercury’s sexuality was under scrutiny in the “gutter press”. After a phenomenal twenty-one-minute performance at Live Aid, Queen’s position as an all-time great rock band was secure. How could such a brief performance make such an impact? The short answer is that Live Aid was the most widely viewed broadcast in television history and Queen stole the show. Live Aid was a benefit concert to raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia. Thanks to the ambition of its organisers and its stellar line up, the event grew beyond all expectations. In the end, the 16-hour broadcast on Saturday 13 July 1985 began at London’s Wembley Stadium and continued from the John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia. Through the magic of satellite link-ups, Live Aid was broadcast in 150 nations to an estimated 1.9 billion viewers, or nearly 40 percent of the world’s population! Queen played an evening slot at Wembley.

I like after the song he goes up to the guy holding the camera cable and says something that makes the guy laugh, like “Thanks for keeping me from falling on my arse.”

There were a lot of people to see different bands, but Freddie took control over that crowd and made it look like Queen is the only band playing that day. No other band had such audience response.

@@DerekDerekDerekDerekDerekDerek I´ve watched the whole performances when it was broadcasted live back in the day and then many times on VHS copy. The London concerts and the Philly as well. I´ve seen it many times. And of course, Radio Gaga is annoying after hearing it so many times everywhere and I´m not even a Queen fan that much. But the audience connection with Freddie was outstanding. What kind of music you or I prefer is not relevant. The Who were great too and of course people were cheering and clapping, but by far not as united and enthusiastic as when Queen played.
I watched this on live. Honestly one or two of the bands who came on before them felt like they dialed it in a bit. They were performing for free. Then Queen came in and gave the performance of the century and the millions just started pouring in. The bands coming on after them....Well you can just imagine. Luckily there was Bowie. This whole night is like watching the moon landing...one to treasure

Paul Gambaccini, who was part of the BBC broadcasting team at Live Aid, recalled the awe among other superstar musicians watching backstage. “Everybody realized that Queen was stealing the show,” said Gambaccini. These were the very words Elton John uttered when he rushed into Mercury’s trailer after the set. “You bastards, you stole the show,” joked the charismatic star.
Elton John wasn't the only one to call them "bastards". David Bowie, who went on right after Queen, said, "You bastards! How is anyone supposed to go on after THAT?!?"
This is considered the greatest live concert of all time. And Freddy is considered the greatest Front man of all time.

I came from NYC to see Freddie and Queen at Live Aid I was 17. I cannot tell you what it was like but Amazing to have been there. I had seen Queen on their first US Tour at MSG in NYC and in also in Canada. That was the best show I have ever seen. Some of the best musician I have ever seen live in my life. RIP Freddie
QUEEN took some of their hit songs and practiced this whole set before the concert. They were all perfectionist. Freddie broke his standing mic early in their career so he kept so he could move around freely, also his air guitar😂
This is an unbelievable performance by Queen. Unfortunately this particular copy of the concert cuts out a little bit at the end which really breaks the flow and is quite the buzz kill. There is another copy (a little bit longer) that starts with two comedians dressed as English Bobbies introducing Queen. That one plays the whole thing uninterrupted. For some reason, this seems to be the most popular chosen copy for the last few months. WWRY and WATC are both Anthems. Both of these songs were written for audience participation. Freddie wrote We Are The Champions and Brian wrote We Will Rock You. Brian said he wanted something the audience could do to be part of the performance so he thought that they could clap and stomp their feet. So yes, they did expect these songs to reach farther than just a Queen show but never dreamed that they would become so ingrained in culture and sporting events. There is a man named Spike Edney who is a multi-instrumentalist who is often called the 5th member of Queen. He steps in on piano when Freddie is working the front and also sometimes on synth or added guitar at live shows. Queen shows are usually very spectacular, this is a very stripped down concert, billed as a "Global Jukebox" which is why they played the classics that people want to hear. There were no costumes, lights, pyrotechnics, pumped up sound and no glam to be brought in for this show. There were two shows going on at the same time, this one in London and one in Philadelphia. Thank you for your reaction to this impressive and outstanding performance.

We Will Rock You was written by Brian May (lead guitarist) and We Are the Champions by Freddie Mercury (lead vocalist). They were conceptualized in a sense as a single song/idea, which is why they are played back to back on the News of the World album and why you will always hear them played back to back on the radio and live. The intent behind these songs was to get the audience to participate and be more involved in the music and the shows. As a result, Rock You/Champions became a kind of anthem for Queen.

He’s not off-stage, but he is somewhat hidden upstage near Roger’s drum risers when he plays electric keyboards. For Crazy Little Thing Called Love, he sat and played at Freddie’s piano.
- this “fifth member” is Spike Edney, who began joining them on tours only in 1984 (preceded briefly by another touring keyboardist named Fred Mandel, Spike took his place when Mandel left for another opportunity).
Spike Edney continued to play for Queen through 1986’s Magic Tour (with higher visibility during the 2nd half of those concerts) and at the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert. He played for The Brian May Band (Brian’s solo project) and was a member of Roger Taylor’s band The Cross.
Spike also was Music Director for the official tribute band Queen Extravaganza, and keyboardist for the long running London stage production of the smash hit musical We Will Rock You.
He played in the Queen + Paul Rogers years, and continues to play with Queen+ Adam Lambert.
If *anyone* could ever be truly said to be the “fifth member” of Queen, it would be Spike Edney.

SIDE NOTE: Phil Collins was the only performer to play on both stages during the event. He did his first set at Wembley Stadium then hopped on the Concorde and landed in Philadelphia to play on that stage 3 hours later. The whole event was an awesome spectacle to witness. QUEEN had the best set overall!

Queen was awesome! All 4 musicians were at the top of their game from 1973-85 or so. This particular performance showcased them and IMHO, was THE apex of the Live Aid concerts.
I consider myself lucky to have seen them in 1976 and 77 in Milwaukee. I was totally enthralled by Freddie Mercury. He was the archetype of a frontman (no disrespect to Paul Rodgers and Adam Lambert).

I went to two of their concerts in the 80s. The concerts were long and their was the amazing change of tempo. Freddie Mercury was of course iconic. I've seen jagger and Bowie and Tyler. No-one had command and control with originality like Freddie!

The sole purpose of We Are The Champions and We Will Rock You was to garner fan participation. They wanted songs for audiences to be involved with and it all began with Brian May and the stomp stomp clap in the studio.

Gives me goose bumps too. But right after Fred sings, “take a backseat, hitchhike, till I’m ready…” Roger shouts, “READY FREDDIE!” Love that you appreciate Roger’s moment, tho. Given the camera never caught a glimpse of him during all 20 minutes. 😖
We will rock you and We are the champions were written specifically for the crowds and in particular their fans to sing for as appreciation for them and for them to sing along with an anthemic effect in mind. May wrote Rock you and said it was in reaction to a gi g they played in the mid 70s. At the end of the show as they left for backstage, the crowd spontaneously sang, You will never walk alone by a band called Gerry & the pacemakers. So it inspired him to write Rock you. Freddie wanted to write a song about the band and how they had managed to beat the critics through will, adversity and belief in themselves, but also many of their songs rooted for the man in belief that we deserve a good life and and to empower ourselves as we are stronger than we think. The Mic stand was due to an early gig where Freddie swung the stand ad the bottom fell off, it ended up being a better prop for his performance so he stuck with it. Shame this video clip cut too early, there are others which do not cut the last few minutes and show the extra finale...I definitely recommend you revisit it again. Hammer to Fall is another May song that reflects is thoughts on the cold war crisis of the mid 80s at that very time. The live aid stage was built to revolve so the bands could set up ready while the current band performs. There was also a traffic light lighntig set up to warn the performers when the time was coming to an end, with amber warning and red would cut out the sound if they over-ran. The last song was Is this the world we created, also from The works, not the Xmas song that you had researched, the source you found was not accurate, but not your fault...great reaction and insight.
The only other satellite feed live concert before this was Elvis, live From Hawaii. And this concert, coveted two continents, Philadelphia, London. 12 hours, live ....it was epic.
Just so you know Freddie's doc told him not to perform because he had a infection that was affecting his voice but he was not going to let his fans down and ended up giving the best performance ever.
Live Aid was a concert of bands who donated their time to raise money for a cause to feed & give health treatment to the worlds poorest children, Queen was the best performance at this gig (The broadcast of the biggest benefit concert in history, organized by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for Ethiopian famine relief).
They only used the speakers in front of the stage for tracking. No ear pieces that day. Freddie started that part mic stand thing when early in Queen he broke a stand trying to take the mic off and he liked the effect. There were stages in London AND Philadelphia. Phil Collins took the Concorde super sonic jet and played both cities. I gotta say it broke my heart to hear such a young person talk about that being a long time to stand in the audience. Most of the people would have stayed two days for this line up.
You have to realise what a success this was for Queen! The audience was not just there for them, they had been criticised for playing gigs in South Africa and they had a strict 20 mins. To prepare they rehearsed and rehearsed to squeeze as many songs into their set. A masterpiece of a performance.😊
In 2005, their Live Aid performance was named the greatest live rock performance of all time by a BBC poll, ahead of Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock and the Rolling Stones’ free gig in Hyde Park. It’s been described as 20 minutes that changed music.
According to Brian Freddie was very good on the guitar, very unorthodox - all downstrokes. As a massive fan of Jimi Hendrix, Freddie taught himself to play the guitar, after some point he gave up on the idea. In live situations he only played rhythm guitar on Crazy Little Thing Called Love. However, he was capable of doing more than rhythm guitar, he wrote the song Ogre Battle on the guitar.
At that time Spike Edney was on keyboards mostly unseen, then toured with Brian in 90-ies and now he is also with Queen! Freddie and Brian later that evening did another Queen song from The Works album - Is This The World We Created? check that out! Lady Gaga took her name from Radio Ga Ga! Good reaction. Yes, they had a piano player not a track. A number of bands did well, but Queen stood out, they had a more experience doing stadium concerts and worked the stage well. We Will Rock You was created to be a song that would be good for audience participation. He broke the mic stand accidentally and liked the feel so he kept using it 😊
I think it depends on the video they reacted to. I have an original DVD copy and it does not cut at all. This is the first time I have seen it cut like that. Unfortunate for sure.

You got the version that cuts off… there’s another version that has the end of the song. They ended the song and set perfectly…right as the red light came on to indicate their 20 minutes was up. Really the only band that nailed it
Bass player John Deacon is seen on the wider shots, but you can't see Spike Edney playing Keyboards off stage. No triggers as such, as you describe, but what you see is what you got, and Queen were MIGHTY!
Freddy had so much energy not just singing his lungs out but strutting across the stage that takes heck of a lot of breathe and remember its not ten minutes when Queen go on tour they're playing for over an hour and Freddy still has the energy.

Everything was LIVE. No click tracks, autotune, recorded backing tracks or any other tech (most wasn't around then). After '82 they hired a touring musician to play piano on certain songs (and occasional rhythm guitar) because Freddie didn't like being "tied" to the piano and wanted to interact with the audience more. More often than not he was side/back stage, but on certain songs he would come out & play Freddie's grand piano. Spike Edney has been that guy for 35 years for Queen.
FYI - in case no one explained the concert setup, there were 2 stages. One was in Wembley in London and one was in Philadelphia. Each of these stages had 3 stages on it - 1 in use, 1 being torn down, 1 being set up. While a band was on stage at Wembley, they were "setting" Philly so when Wembley band was done satellites would switch to Philadelphia and the Wembley would "set" while Philadelphia band was on stage. They did this back & forth all day long.
It was done in London & Philadelphia at the same time. An iconic moment. It was simulcast on radio so you could hear it in stereo.
You caught the one that cuts off the ending. Later that night Freddie and Brian May did a short duet called Is this the world we created. Live Aid was 16 hours and you just watched the best 20 minutes of it! 👑 forever
My favorite Live Aid moment, other than this set, was Phil Collins singing "Against All Odds." Just amazing.

You have to understand what was on that stage. Every band member on that stage were the best of the best. He KNEW what he had on the stage! You also have to understand that Freddie LOVED conducting the audience and was a master at doing that. I remember that concert. Every performance there at LIVE AID was OUT OF THIS WORLD! And, yes, it just cut like that due to time constraints.
I wish the cameramen showed more of John, Roger, and Brian's performances. But this is a legendary live performance. And Freddie was sick and was advised not to perform.

We Will Rock you was written by Brian May specifically so that the audience could participate in the song, Queen played in a lot of stadiums and Freddie likes to let the audience sing or clap along when they performed
There are great pre- and post-set reenactments of the Live Aid appearance - along with commentary from many who were involved - in an excellent documentary entitled Who Wants to Live Forever. John Blunt is in the role of Mercury and he is absolutely note-perfect.
They added a 5th member in 81. It was either Spike Ednie, Morgan Fisher (used to be in Mott the Hoople - Queen warmed up for them in 74) or Fred Mandel (who also played rhythm guitar - used to tour with Elton John). That was an odd edit. Brian wrote Hammer to Fall and We Will Rock You. Roger wrote Radio Ga Ga. Freddie wrote the rest. Later Brian and Freddie came back to play Is This the World We Created with just an Ovation 12 string (it sounded good). Live Aide was performed at 2 sites. The crowd watched the performance from the other city on the big screens during stage changes. Collins and Sting were great. I also liked Ultravox, Tom Petty, David Bowie (with Thomas Dolby on keys), Hall and Oates, Cars, Santana (Metheny played with them), Duran Duran, and Bryan Ferry (singer from Roxy Music - Gilmour played with them).

You need to watch their full 1986 Wembley concert - it is truly amazing, and you will get to see lots of their other songs performed.
They had three stages at the Live Aid concert at Wembley which revolved - one being played on, one being taken down and the other one being set up for the next group. There is a documentary you can watch as to why and how Live Aid concert was conceived and set up - in three months! Well done Bob Geldof and Midge Ure.
It was one of those things to experience and I'm glad I can now watch it because I wasn't there in person. I give a thumbs up for this but I don't have the time this morning to watch the whole thing. :) cheers and keep on...

Three stages there in Wembley; stages prepared for next act scheduled as it comes available. The 75 acts were in two locations. Yes simultaneousThere in London (Wembley) and Stage in Philadelphia. The acts were held to@ 22 min on stage then mics turned off. EDIT...came back to remind you tho Queen won the vote for the best...others were very close but all essentially agreed Queen was spectacular. There's a video that tells the number of votes received by others. Thanks for the wonderful interest you showed here these many years after the fact. Hi, I saw that first time around. I was 13. In 1985. Analogue tv and radio did a simulcast. I remember we had a monochrome tv but.....
a stereo radio so we used that for sound. Sadly just over 6 years later Freddie died of Aids but his time will never fade. To answer your tech points..... Queen played Wembley stadium a number of times and you need to see those. Especially the 1986 MAGIC Tour which ended at Knebworth in 1987 and their final live tour before losing Freddie on November 24th 1991, At that time Queen were at number 1 in the album charts in many countries with at that time their final studio album INNUENDO. If you watch the videos made from 1989 album The Miracle and Innuendo you can see his declining health. His final appearance in a Queen video says it all. These are the days of our lives is about him and saying goodbye.

To answer your question (though six months late), yes there was a keyboard player with Queen at Live Aid. His name is Spike Edney. Apparently, he was off to the side which resulted in him rarely (or never?) being seen on camera. He was playing Freddie's piano during CLTCL.

I watched this on the world-wide Broadcast and saw Queen at approx 6.30 AM Sunday morning in New Zealand. (NZ was 12 hours ahead, time wise) So, 72,000 at Wembley, 95,000 at Philly in the USA and around 1.3 BILLION world wide, watched Live Aid. The World figures I have no idea how they were calculated. However, the artists performing and the people watching all were of the opinion that Queen "stole the show" that day/night. Certainly the best Concert I've ever seen, covering a huge number of Bands. Cheers.
When you have elvis, freddy, mj, Prince, and so many others we really had phenomenal singers in our time, most of this generation won't have that and it's such a shame, yet having us oldies to listen and pass it on to continue living, is an honour I'm happy to continue and pass along RIP to all these great artists that have passed way to early
It'll obviously be different without Freddie, but as soon as I saw there were Queen tickets available for this fall, I had to get tickets. I've kicked myself for not seeing Rush's last few tours, so I want to catch whatever little I can of Queen.

Remember watching this id just started work in April of that year, even watching this today sends shivers down my spine absolutely electrifying performance.I retired in Oct 2021 after 36 years how time flies!
One thing that helped with the large line-up was that it occurred in two venues, Wembley Stadium in London and John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia and simulcast on BBC, ABC, and MTV. Many of the performances were aired out of order so that the bigger acts that might have been playing at the same time could be seen during the broadcast.
Every time I watch this I forget that this was not a Queen exclusive concert 😂😂

You should watch one of their concerts...for example, the last concert that Freddie performed in before they stopped performing live due to his illness. Wembley 1986.
I had the pleasure of watching his last performance from the VIP area behind the stage at Knebworth, 9th August 1986.

That's far from the last they did. It was just in the middle of their Magic Tour. The last one was in August of 1986 at Knebworth. Not Wembley, which was in July. I don't know why people say this. It's so misleading!
Some things to consider about this legendary performance
1. Queen were a last minute addition, tickets were sold out at Wembley stadium before their set was announced. Yet thousands of concert goers clapped their hands in unison to Radio Gaga, sung along to their songs and sung along to Freddie's commands. Just great stuff
2. Queen has performed sold out stadium tours all over the world. Most acts in Live Aid haven't played to a crowd this big before. The results for the other acts are largely disappointing. Many also suffered technical failures. Queen overcame this by their experience in playing sold out stadiums and they rehearsed their set unlike most of the other acts. On top of Freddie's command of the stage, Queen puts a lot of hard work into their shows and they've paid off. It is always worth listening to their live acts from '73 to '86 as they never perform the same way.

Live Aid was an all day concert. This set was in London, the later convert was in Philadelphia.
I watched this on tv on the day. Even with MTV, there weren’t a lot of ways to see these bands perform unless you were there.
Another killer benefit concert was the Rolling Stones initiated and headlined SARSStock in Toronto in 2003. Would have loved to be at that one to see The Guess Who, RUSH, The Flaming Lips, AC/DC and the Stones back to back. (Sorry JT)
Brian came up with the stomp, stomp, clap. They loved that their fans sang with them. But they wanted the fans to be even more involved. So that is why they wrote the songs and added stomps, claps ect. Freddie broke a mic stand in the beginning of Queen. He just kept using it that way. One day and broadcasted around the world live. One performance after another. They didn't cut off like that.

Theres a reason this prerformance is awesome. Because Queen came in rwo weeks early. Rented a small theater and practiced and worked out the whole show. There is a video on this.
A lot of performers chose to play their new stuff - - Queen did as Bob Geldoff wanted - - they made it a juke-box and played the hits or parts of them - - and Hammer to fall as a new thing .I was one of the 1.9 billion - sitting in Odense, Funen, Denmark - the home town of Hans Christian Andersen - - and we all were "glued" to the screen! There are good video's of their live performances - I can - as others maybe have done too - recommend "Somebody to love" live from Montreal 1981. - And "Save me" - and "Love of my life" - The version from Rio. You may think of the circumstances: There were no "show" - no "performance" - no costumes - no lightning or other stuff - just the raw performance - for all of the participants. Bowie and Elton said "you stole the show" - "how am I supposed to follow that" - "ass wholes" - some were competitive - but most of them had a good time backstage. A lot of the bands or musicians you have mentioned were performing at the Tribute concert for Freddie in 1992 - .Queen was/still is good - but always better live than in studio. - and they didn't try to copy the studioversions - - they did something else - that required real talent and musicianship - and they did a lot of improvisations as well - - . You miss out if you don't look into it. They were a very tight band.
We will rock you and we are the champions were written to be audience participation songs. Queen wanted to engage their audience.
No sound effects, light show or even sound checks other than that couple of seconds at the onset. The stage was in 3rds, one band playing, one setting up, one breaking down. Their time was limited and controlled by light signals at the front of the stage. When the light turned yellow, they were to finish within a couple of minutes. When it turned red, your time was up and control was ready to shut off the mikes and go to the next band. There was an encore song later that night: Is This The World We Created with just Brian's acustic guitar and Freddie. There is an excellent rendition of that song the next year, Live at Wembley 1986
The audiences sang to them at an early concert "You will never walk alone" The band recognized that the audience wanted to be involved, to sing, so Freddie wrote We Are the Champions with that and with Soccer matches in mind, and Brian wrote We Will Rock You for the audience participation as well. They end every performance with those two and started some performances with a very fast, energetic We Will Rock You.
Anthems! That’s what Champions and Rock are. Brian May wrote We Will Rock You just so the audience could participate , it was intentional.
