I have had one of the most difficult missions ever. We had to deal with skinheads and thugs and were beaten up once, twice we were deliberately (almost) run over. But we also had a hard time with some evangelical churches who claim to serve Christ, but called us names, gave us the middle finger and some of us were even spat on by those Christians. But I have become stronger than ever. Thanks to my mission I have overcome all my fears and have had a successful life. I am retiring in a week and I am still grateful that my mission was a foundation for my future life.

At least two missionaries that I knew one male one female attempted suicide on their missions. The boy missionary ended up having thyroid cancer that caused massive depression and he insisted on going home and only got help after seeing a psychologist outside of the lds church that insisted his symptoms were physical and it saved his life. The girl had serious mental health issues before leaving but was told a mission could be helpful. It wasn’t.

So to be considered a “member” one must believe, per church lawyers. So the actual number of “members” is about 35% less and the numbers who attend each Sunday.

This is why the church pushes missions on their young people. I too, had much of the same experiences as yourself. Even if fight when we’re in the wrong, will make most humans appreciate the “persecution” in the name of religion. Christian’s, eastern religions and others will feel justified in their stance when hard times come. It’s human nature.

Get trauma counseling before you drag it into your marriage and family. It takes time to heal. Most don’t see the church as anything remotely pressuring or cult like, but rather as a well-balanced and positive church that is uplifting and fun. I’m truly very sorry your parents and/or unhealthy leaders within the church weren’t good for your mental health. No one deserves that. It happens, especially in the Mormon corridor.

I am from an area where they split the only stake in the area that had been stale in growth for 10 years. Now they have two stakes and they pretty much operate as one because all the activities are "joint" activities with the other stake. Now they announced a temple with two small stakes and very little population of old people. It is all to appear there is growth.

The school district where I work changed all of the high schools to start later in the day this year as the evidence is overwhelming that early morning start times are hard on teens' mental and physical health, but yeah, let's keep dragging the Mormon kids out of bead before the roosters crow so they can attend a brainwash session before going to school totally exhausted.

It'll be interesting how the Mormon players on my old high school football team will be able to handle attending seminary now. Because, the University Interscholastic League (U.I.L) the governing body that oversees high school sports in Texas has ordered all teams in our area to begin morning football practices earlier now due to increasing heat. My team used to begin at 6:30am and now they're starting at around 5. I don't know that any will be forced to quit the team simply because we Texans love our high school football. If you've ever seen Friday Night Lights or Varsity Blues. You know what I'm talking about.

To my Mormon friends. I share the truth out of love and not out of hate (Ephesians 4:15)! When Joseph Smith said in the introduction to the Book of Mormon that the Book of Mormon is "the most correct of any book on earth," he completely disregarded the Bible which is the true Word of God. The Apostle Paul recognized that any gospel that is contrary to the Gospel in the Bible is a "false gospel" (Galatians 1:8). Additionally, God warned the world through the Apostle John in Revelation 22:18, "I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book." I almost became a Mormon and their Jesus Christ is NOT THE SAME Jesus Christ as in Biblical Christianity. Jesus Christ is not the spirit brother of Satan for the Biblical Jesus is the Son of God...God in human flesh (Colossians 2:9). My prayer is my Mormon friends will turn to the true Jesus Christ in the Bible and not the Jesus in the Book of Mormon. God bless you!

    An objective point of view...
I noticed one significant error about the lawsuit over tithing use (9:45 - 10:00 +/-) . I'm neither condemning nor defending the church on this issue, however....the church has ALWAYS been very clear that tithing is intended for "the building up of God's Kingdom on Earth." That is sort of an open-ended statement, but has generally been interpreted as meaning the construction "arm" of the church, ie: the construction of temples, churches, education facilities , missionary facilities, etc. , and also programs that have been used as missionary tools such as the various pageants,(no longer relevant) and the trek program , among others (The Young Ambassadors, The Tabernacle Choir, and the Missionary Program itself, for example).
Fast Offerings and other "charitable contributions" are specifically earmarked for , guess what..."charity"....! Humanitarian aid and disaster relief and other functions. The church has more money in its 'corporate' end than in the 'charity' end , but simply moving funds from one account to another isn't always that simple , or possibly even legal. (As crazy as that may seem.)
The fact that the church has billions in cash , stocks, and other holdings, is really a function of using a capitalist economy, to grow your business, and not necessarily an indication of any nefarious intentions or practices. The church struggled financially for many years, always "behind the 8 ball", until it was finally able to get on top of its finances, and start growing and investing its capital. Naturally , many people are disillusioned or angry about that, probably because of the erroneous idea that a non-profit organization can't have any extra money sitting around. Just a quick glance at Warren Buffet and his "non-profit" holdings will teach you about that.
You can't vilify an individual or an organization for 'legally' using the system to their advantage. From a 'legal' standpoint , I'm saying the church has all its bases covered. If you want to dig into the "morals" of the issue , you will go down a rabbit hole of differing opinions that has no end. If you feel disillusioned or that you were misguided, and your faith was placed in a flawed institution, there are many who will agree with you , but that in itself is not evidence of any wrongdoing or illegal practices.
There are many people who feel disenfranchised and that they were misled, but if you have an axe to grind you won't get far going up against tithing.

Do you even know what it takes to go on a mission? I love it when people have absolutely no idea what missionaries actually go through...a mission is not life threatening at all...many are called but few are chosen...i was chosen to serve a mission by God and Satan goes after those individuals first...so within the church if they know that god chose you to serve a mission, there is all kinds of jealousy that happens within the church among it's members and in families to....

@GenerallyUnquotable Both George and Mit are LDS. George campaigned for the 1968 Republican presidential nomination and once worked for either GM or Ford. George's family donated land in El Paso for the Westside LDS meeting house. That structure was next door to my uncle's house and across the street from the El Paso Country Club. In 1968 George's ability to run for president was questioned on the ground that his relatives lived in Mexico for a while.
