    That’s the correct way to do it. Dry build to check everything fits properly, strip down again, paint and build for the final time knowing that everything will fit perfectly.

      Totally agree with you, and also you can make adjustments if needed, for example - if you need to roll the arches or as he is finding, the tabs to hold brake lines/fuel lines. Still a way to go yet, but it’s the begging of the end.

    That's a fine plan. It's a lot more work, but it's better to make sure everything fits properly and you have all the brackets and holes you need before you paint.

  • @JohnWD40TC02

    Fantastic job Dan the old gal is coming along nicely, I know some will say you are doing the rebuild the wrong way round but if you don't know what brackets you need or where they all go what you are doing is going to save you a lot of repainting the shell after welding fixings to it.
    What you really need is a full blueprint for the shell so you know everything is fitted and you are 100% sure the shell is finished, that way you can paint the shell without having to refit it twice, maybe someone will have a blueprint or plans for the car Dan? I've never done anything like this so I'm sorry I cant help you out. Look forward to the next one mate! 🤗👍

    Looking good! Make sure you mount the axles (or at least the CV joints) in the wheel hubs. If you put any weight on the front and the wheel bearings are not held together by the CV joint, you might wear/break the wheel bearings.
    So, shove the outer CV joints in the wheel bearings, put the bolt in it and tighten the bolt (No need for the 250?Nm, just good and tight should suffice

    Your doing it right, you’ve done 75% of the work, the last 10% takes the longest, doing a dry fit before paint will save a lot of headaches redoing parts that you thought would be ok, you have a bright future in this trade

    • @gunnmoto
      @gunnmoto 3 роки тому

      A lot of it is replacing old/rusty/worn parts by the looks of it. New hubs and bearings is a no-brainer. Swing arms were rusted through like he mentioned months ago and the other bits have been restored. He mentioned in earlier videos that they had been blasted and recoated. It’s a resto, replacing like for like where needed.

  • @paulcushnie
    @paulcushnie 3 роки тому

    Build it the way your doing it as it makes sense. Yes its double the work but there will be panels that need hole cut in them and there is no point drilling a fresh painted car to expose metal that can rust equally there will be holes that will have been plugged as its not required for your car but was for another model so you can then remove and weld in a plate to remove it.

  • @r8rae
    @r8rae 3 роки тому +1

    looking good. FYI - putting the car's weight on those front bearings without the CV joint in place - will likely ruin the front bearings - especially if you leave it on the floor & start to move it around without at least the CV joints bolted up in place

    • @davog1946
      @davog1946 3 роки тому

      I thoroughly disagree. Won’t harm them at all.

    • @r8rae
      @r8rae 3 роки тому

      the CV & hub nut being tightened up prevents the bearing coming apart from lateral play. I don't have the mk1/2 books to hand right now, but the mk5 one has the warning:
      "Do not attempt to move the vehicle without the drive shafts fitted as this would damage the wheel bearing. If a vehicle nevertheless has to be moved, comply with the following:
      t Install an outer joint instead of the drive shaft.
      t Tighten outer joint ..."

    • @davog1946

My GTi 2.0 16v suited me after 24 years of ownership I sold it to an enthusiast. I never drove it in the rain, worth mentioning, it had a ‘Toad alarm’ fitted with full windows and sunroof opening and closure. It never wrong.

    Need someone good at fixing Digifant system. Our oldest machine is a Mk2 Country Syncro and spent years trying to make it run properly. We had it good but gone to being a crap runner after full resto. Reaching out here to Digifant MAF experts. I really don't want to go down the route of engine swapping. Too many projects and not enough cash. Same powertrain like clipper convertible. Anyhow love this channel and into a cafe racer build.
