Mr. Hunter. Thank you very much for commenting on my video. I really meant it when I said that I consider the part you came up with for this song genius. There's a huge difference between those who create and those who merely play what's already been created! You've written some of the most memorable guitar parts in rock and that is a rare gift. I'm honored that you would watch one of my videos. Thanks again, Andy.
You got the nod from The Deacon himself. That impresses the shit out of me, not to mention your exemplary tutorial of my favorite song on earth! Instant subscription...😎
Still here in October 2024. Thank you sir. Never thought in my reckless guitar playing life could ever imagine playing this. Never had a lesson. I am doing very well with your lesson! Hard to play full speed. Moves along faster than ya think. Thank you so much for the homework teach! (Thought I’d never say that). 👍👍
Wow! I just heard this driving home this morning and I remembered a friend in college ~’93 asking me to learn this for him. Hadn’t a clue how to even approach it 26 years ago and hadn’t tried since! I come home and open this! Coincidence? I think your video is a sign today is the day! Awesome tune and great lesson! Thank you
This channel still being underrated after all these years is really criminal...this man is a genius...and personally I'm not always able to play what he teaches but I swear I get new ideas Everytime from his videos that I incorporate in my own playing...and that's what it comes down to ultimately...anyway...I'm still waiting for the day this channel gets the recognition it so richly deserves
Well said, my thoughts exactly. Not always the easiest way to learn a song, as extremely accurate - maybe too much so for as humble strummer like me to learn everything taught. But a lot to take away and incorporate.
This is the most Complete lesson and description of the song I have ever seen. It allows you to understand why this is song gives me the "Warm and Fuzzies" every time I hear it and why it has been on my Play list since I first heard it in 1977.
Who the hell thumbs down such an amazing free tutorial?? its beyond me! when someone has taken their own time to help you. Anyway thank you for another amazing accurate lesson on this great song.
My Travis picking has never been better. The way you explain your different techniques really helps me. Just wanted to tell you, your teachings are very much appreciated. Thanks again Andy.
Ive seen a massive decline in guitar videos and the views that go along with it over the last 10 years of playing, yet channels like this continue to pump out amazing tutorials, renditions and maestro level classes. Thank you for not stopping!
I realise that i haven't given some news yet. (i'm french) I got the tab. I did work. Fortunatly i'm retired and the isolation because of the corona virus have given me time to work hard. Now i play the way you teach but a little slower. I'm around 80 as you are at 105. If i go faster, it's not clean. I didn't imagine that i could play this beautiful part of guitar picking someday. But i did it !!! with your help and only yours. You're the best. Thank you Mr Shutup&play. I discoverd this song at his birth i was about 25 years old. I can play it as i'm 67. Late is best that never. You make one more reason to make me happy. I thank you . CHRISTIAN.
Excellent lesson and tab for an absolute classic song that I can listen to over and over again! One tip for anyone else like me who can't hold down an A chord with one finger without deadening the E string. Just replace all the 0's on the top E string with 5's on the B string, held by little finger - this makes it quite playable for me, but without damaging the ligament in my pointer finger. ;-)
The best guitar lessons on youtube by a country mile, I wish I had access to this growing up, learning everything by ear was lots of fun, but... Thank you.
Got it! Not as hard as I thought it was going to be. I just realized that every song I can play that sounds decent I've learned on this channel. Time to shoot you another donation.
The best tutorials ever. There’ll never be any better than yours. You referred to Steve Hunter as a genius. I would put you in that class. Thanks for what you’re doing. Everything you produce is utter brilliance.
I’m not a PG fan. Never was. That said, this is a fantastic progression and Andy is such a great technical guitarist, I’m blown away. Really makes you rethink your knee jerk, “not really my bag” mentality. I’m always impressed, buddy.
You seem to dig out songs that I’d never bother looking at, but once you see it played they suddenly become real bangers... never thought anything of this song and now it’s a real toe tapper! Awesome Chanel !

Surprised to find such an accurate and well done tutorial right away. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone to watch similar videos and they open with needless rambling about their site, gear, what they had for dinner, etc...shut up and play!!
This guy is underrated as a guitar player. When you add the lesson in there it’s genius. Specially this song with Travis picking, Andy also taught Fleetwood Mac “Chain” the Travis picking is my favorite stuff that Andy uses the best in my book. I feel happy hearing these songs and that is why try so hard to play them well-no not as well as Andy-but well enough to play it in clubs. Just got to add the singing.
Came across this purely by accident. Walk past my guitar every day but have not picked it up for some 3+ years.....not got the energy.....anyway saw this vid and I’m now staring at it in the corner of the room.....you may have awakened something here. Thank you 👍
You have to pick it up and just start playing it again!!! I'm 69 years young and play every day (for me and my dogs). I challenge myself to play harder stuff, that's why I'm here listening to this song.
I lost count on how many times I have watched the lesson at 6:09 and 9:45 searching for the deviations between what I had accidentially made from it and the lesson. This is really great lesson, thanks a lot! I have been wanting to play this song for a long time and thanks to you I think I can eventually master it!
Well, Shutup & Play Andy, As Steve Deacon said "the best video I've seen on how to play Solsbury Hill" hats off to both of you, Steve Deacon for the genius of writing and playing the part and your good self for making it accessible to the rest of us, many thanks. I've tried this wonderful song several times over the years and not come close. this lesson and four days into "lockdown" and I've got it, you're best advice "don't count" I love the unflustered plain talking description of your exceptional playing. It wasn't easy but the joy of nailing such a tricky little beaut like this one, Happy days
from a former longtime school of rock director..great lesson of a most difficult finger twister..and a very cool song history and explanation of the genius riff..
Oh my God, just gone through your library ... even an old guy like me might still learn :-) Thanks for that, Sir !! Professional Videos where you can feel the passion and love !!!
It used to be I could hear a song and play it immediately but I could never figure this one out. I have learned and played without reading a single note but am a firm believer it to be a bucket list to learn how to read music. This song is one of those that opened my eyes. Thank you..
Took me a half hour to get my thumb to keep the rhythm and then I remembered the 30-20 blues which I hadn’t played in years... once I played it a couple of times everything clicked. Thanks for the excellent tutorial, one of my fingerpicking songs
i thought this song was going to be hard to learn but i got it sorted in half an hour from your instruction . loved it since i was a teenager. many heartfelt thanks
Andy, I wanted to give you a sincere thank you for helping rehash my love for playing. I sat down and learned Landslide from you, my first start to finish fingerstyle song, and I must say what an amazing feeling it is when you're fingers get a groovin! It's like they have a mind of their own. Learning that song alone opened many doors for me, and I'm excited to continue my journey with you. Cheers friend.
I gotta say, this has to be the best tutorial I have ever seen on youtube. It's a complicated song, and overexplaining it in the lesson would make this video way too long. Very well done sir! Will get it with a little more practice, thanks to you!
Been a Hunter fan since the Alice Cooper days and really started to appreciate his work when I first heard the intro to Sweet Jane. Your lesson here is incredibly well done and accurate.
A killer lesson and the best of "I'm not sure I can play this, wow I'm playing it !" followed by all the juggling balls falling on the floor and a smile, knowing that it WILL be nailed after a bit of study and then become a lifelong friend. These youngsters have no idea what solid gold they have access to nowadays to make serious progress on the guitar. Want it easy, quick with 2 chords, go elsewhere - I just found this channel, subbed it and can't wait to see what else there is. I thank you sir, absolutely amazing !
Thanks. I put a huge amount of time and effort into making these videos. I like to keep them free for those that can't afford it, but if you can, please support what I do. Cheers, Andy www.shutupandplay.ca/donate.html
I would love to know the guy who has been able to teach me so many great songs and continues to do so. You introduced me to Travis Picking with Lindsey Buckinghams “Never Going Back Again” and I haven’t stopped picking since and please keep these fingerpicking songs going. I love the Travis pick!
You’re showing me the CORRECT way to play literally every song I’ve ever wanted to learn. Your style of instruction is amazing. Thank you so much for sharing your talent. I’m off to your website to sign up and donate!
I have been waiting forever for you to do this one. It has been a favourite of mine ever since it first came out. Lots of people have worked out the intro but they all fail on the verse. I wish I could afford to patronize you all the time for this quality of work. Maybe when I win the lottery. ;D
Thank you so much for this! The reason I picked up guitar after not touching one for 10 years was to be able to play this song for my dad. I've really gotten into it for the past few years and grew to love playing guitar like i never did when i was a kid. Never found a good tab or lesson of this song however so I didn't think I was gonna get to learn it until i could learn it by ear ( Which seemed very hard, and after watching your lesson, I don't think I ever could have figured it out myself) but now I think I might be able to do it! Already learned some travispicking from your dust in the wind lesson, although this seems quite a bit more complex, but at last I have a blueprint to go off of. Bought the tab, and will definitely buy more! ( I didn't know you sold tabs!!). Thank you again, you are by far the best guitar teacher on youtube, probably anywhere, and a play-by-ear genius!
Took you two weeks. What a relief you make it look so simple and I have been working on this for a few days so I need to stick at it. You are fantastic.
This is really well done. Great work. I usually figure out guitar parts by ear but I couldn't make out exactly what was being played at the end of the verses in this song. This lesson nails every single chord and note precisely, at least to my ears. And it's so effectively communicated. I can't imagine a more effective tutorial. Thanks.
Best finger style guitarist I've seen that actually sits down and breaks the song down into digestible pieces for us to grasp. Don't know if you actually read these, but I would love for you to do a cover/lesson for "I got a name" - Jim Croce.
Oh no, this is going to be like when he published Rhiannon! Hours and hours of frustration:-) At least there are tabs this time. I always listened to the guitar work whenever this song came on the radio. It was so interesting and now I can see why. Thanks for taking two weeks to learn and play it.
Back in the early ‘90s the local guitar slinger used to close his band’s sets with this tune. Singing and playing at the same time. A nice closer after 3 hours of grunge.
Thank you, I been meaning to learn this for 30 years. You finally got me to play it rather that hear it on the radio. Just a brilliant piece of music! The original recording was a 12 string guitar, hard enough on 6
I put the lightest strings I could find on my 12 string in order to attempt to make a decent pass at Over The Hills And Far Away. Given the fact that nobody would pay to hear my six string performance, pretty sure I have a long way to go on the 12 string. I agree with you that this is a great composition and I am looking forward to the process of learning it.
Excellent tutorial on proper Travis picking for this song. I “can” pick this song but mostly I rhythm strum and keep the 7/4 time-the rhythm has to be right or else people will know something is is off. I also do a chord substitution (only because it’s easier for me) where the lyrics go “today I don’t need a replacement. I’ll show them what the smile on my face meant.” This song should should be in every guitar player’s tool box. If you can get this song nailed and you play it for people, you’ll get lots of smiles.
Glad you uploaded another tutorial! Yes 😁 !! I probably don't know how much pressure it puts on you always having to being a youtuber but I really do enjoy all of your tutorials that you so kindly do for us & I appreciate it very much b/c it makes me want to keep playing my beautiful guitar! Thank U !!!
Really is a stellar tutorial and tab. Travis picking has become my favourite thing and this song is possibly the most addictive Travis picking song there is…I can’t stop playing it! 😂 I agree, it’s genius!!!
Absolutely immaculate as always! Totally agree what an absolutely awesome song and much harder to play correctly and consistently than you would first imagine. Thank you!
A great tutorial, thank you so much. After nearly 40 years of putting it off, I'm finally getting the hang of travis picking, and this is the perfect way to practice. I climbed up Solsbury Hill many times when I lived in the nearby city of Bath. It's also close to the village of Box, where Peter Gabriel's Real World studio is situated. Now well and truly subscribed!
For me too many happy memories of my time in Trowbridge from 1979 - 81. I used to play this (and Genesis - Camel - Pink Floyd) while driving home to the Wirral on Friday nights. Up to Bath then M4 and drive up the Welsh border to Chester then home for last orders.
Thanks for your excellents tutorials. Occassionally I just enjoy the way you explain how to play a song not playing it just watching, enjoying and listening to your explanations. Super great job.
You’re simply the best. Hands down. You must have albums of your own, a band you play with? Please share! Love to hear you playing out.. Thanks for the very well done tutorials. You’re clear concise style and true appreciation for the song and the artists who played them really makes you the best!!
Thanks so much for this...I found it incredibly difficult but your enthusiasm and obvious love of the music carried me along and slowly it started to click. I really could not have done this on my own, and to work it out from just listening leaves me speechless. Cheers Pete
Great lesson mate thanks 👍 I will probably find the picking pattern difficult for a while but I can improvise and strum something that fits to get by until I get the picking sorted. You always get great tones from your guitars whether they're electric or acoustic. Plus having everything blacked out so that we can only see your hands and guitar is a brilliant way of doing your lessons. UA-cam guitar lessons don't get any better than this, perfect !!
The best video I’ve seen on how to play Solsbury Hill. Well done Andy! steve

Sometimes the arrangement of a song is just as genius ( or controversially) even more so than the song itself. This is one of them.

Given the fact that nobody would pay to hear my six string performance, pretty sure I have a long way to go on the 12 string. I agree with you that this is a great composition and I am looking forward to the process of learning it.
Best channel for lessons on YT right here.
You my friend are a next level musician! Geniuses write this stuff, but experts interpret it! Thx!
Awesome lesson!!! To the point, and easy to understand. (So many online lessons, are tedious!)
You're awesome my brother. Steve Hunter is way underrated as you know. Thanks for sharing.
THIS and Lindsey Buckinghams iconic travis picking songs define my life! My god - could listen to this on repeat all day.
Funny you should mention LB. I've gone from learning 'never going back again' to this. Talk about gluten for punishment lol!
He does that now, kinda
Glad you uploaded another tutorial! Yes 😁 !! I probably don't know how much pressure it puts on you always having to being a youtuber but I really do enjoy all of your tutorials that you so kindly do for us & I appreciate it very much b/c it makes me want to keep playing my beautiful guitar! Thank U !!!
Your how-tos and performance videos are the best. Thank you.
Oh man, this is it. THE tutorial for this awesome song. Thanks so much!
Wow! That intro knocks it out of the park.
Thank you!
Love the way you play .It's so down to earth and you always pick the best songs.!!!
Me too, they´re actually that good
OMG this is spot on. Can't thank you enough for this demonstration.
You’re simply the best. Hands down. You must have albums of your own, a band you play with? Please share! Love to hear you playing out.. Thanks for the very well done tutorials. You’re clear concise style and true appreciation for the song and the artists who played them really makes you the best!!
FANTASTIC. Thank you so very much. One of the greatest songs ever. Pete at the height of his powers.
Thanks so much for this...I found it incredibly difficult but your enthusiasm and obvious love of the music carried me along and slowly it started to click. I really could not have done this on my own, and to work it out from just listening leaves me speechless.
Cheers
Pete
Definitely best tutorials on UA-cam ❤️💯💯
Man, your channel is amazing. By far the best guitar lessons in all UA-cam. Thank you so much for your work. Regards from Argentina
Some great playing, great tune, makes the heart always feel light. Thanks for sharing
Thank you so much for all of your effort putting these tutorials together!
The lyric, "Son, he said, grab your things I've come to take you home." My vote for the single greatest lyric ever recorded.
Redeeming.
Dammit, I've literally just learned this and was wishing I had a tutorial of this quality!
Great lesson mate thanks 👍
I will probably find the picking pattern difficult for a while but I can improvise and strum something that fits to get by until I get the picking sorted.
You always get great tones from your guitars whether they're electric or acoustic.
Plus having everything blacked out so that we can only see your hands and guitar is a brilliant way of doing your lessons. UA-cam guitar lessons don't get any better than this, perfect !!
That's what I'm doing. I get the feeling that Travis pick pattern is pretty advanced.
One of my favorite songs Andy! It's always on my playlist, thank you!
One of my favorite 80s songs. You make it look SO easy! Thanks very much for uploading. Cheers from Montreal, Canada.
70's! Great song
Released in 1977, actually...
