    Hello Peter, I just purchased the UJK Router Lift for my Dewalt DW625. Axminister was kind enough to recommend the machine screws for the installation. Thanks to your review, it helped me make my decision. I plan to purchase the Professional Router table at a later time.

    This is an excellent video. Thank you so much for putting it together with so much thought and clarity. I learnt more about router tables, fences etc. in 13 minutes than I managed in considerably more time spent reading through manufacturer's websites and online stores etc.

    Hi Peter
    As every great video. Yes the NVR switch is a must have, a few years ago I invested in a number around the workshop and keep one spare, and introduce one between any machine that can be locked with power on, safety first (I had a switch fail in the one).
    I went a little further with my table and added some draws to hold cutters and all the keys, rings and bits that are associated with this work table. It also keeps the dust and dirt to the outside. (Faced in oak of course)

    Terrific video. I plan to buy one after Christmas. It is very expensive as I am buying the router that's fits the extension table. really enjoyed the video.

    Hi Jay, The fine adjustment is done entirely by the router elevator. The router is clamped in place on a plate in the elevator and one then uses the adjustment feature of the router elevator to adjust the height. It is very accurate and is easy to set to within 0.05 mm (more than enough accuracy for woodwork). I hope that this helps. Peter

    Hi Tom
    The UJK kit is excellent - remember to ask Santa for the cast iron top and the router elevator! The extra cost is well worth it.
    I have just grabbed one of my lights - they have no name on the outside at all. I picked up a pair, for about £5, from a small car spares shop 5 years ago. They have a magnet on the back, white, red and flashing red modes. Far batter value than ones sold by the high end tool makers! There are loads of similar items around and all in the sub £10 bracket. Peter

    Hi Peter, fine review as always. The UJK looks like a fine piece of kit. The key is the tablesaw-style fence that stays square. I went with the Bench Dog, best cast iron top I could find here in the US rather than the MDF top on the Kreg which has a fence nearly identical to the UJK. Mistake. I installed the router table in the wing of my tablesaw, so I was able to replace the Bench Dog fence with a homemade fence that attaches to the tablesaw fence. That ability greatly improves the accuracy.

    hi Reg,
    if you go onto Axminster or Trends website they have a compatibility table for all routers and various attachments ,look for my Router Compatibility, click on that then simply scroll down to your router click on that then it will tell you all you need to know. ..I have found this very helpful.

    I bought the UJK Router same system as you Peter less the extraction box. The only issue is with the phenolic inserts, after a few uses they jam in the plate. Buy new ones and they are fine for the first few users, then same happens.

    Hi Jay, The problem with using any router without an elevator (as I did on my previous 2 router tables) is that fine adjusting is a nightmare. In the end I made up a special handle with a big nut on the end which matched the thread on the Dewalt router height adjuster. I could reach under the table to adjust that handle whilst checking the cutter height with a gauge from above. I am sorry that an elevator is out of the question for you but is really does save a great deal of hassle. Peter

    Hello Peter... I hate that you had to give up your UJK router table due to space issues. Had the same problem a few years ago. My solution was to make 2 French cleats and hang the lighter table and stand on the French cleats. I use a small electric winch bolted to a large beam with some block and tackle pulleys to lift it up and down and use two safety cables hooked into the ceiling beam to make sure it can’t fall. I use both tables at the same time for many projects and re-hang the second table when I am finished routing. It takes less than 5 minutes to take it down and the same to put it back up. And both are on locking casters so I can move them around the workshop.

      Hi Ron, I had to make the decision well before we moved house. We did not know what size workshop to expect at the new location and it was almost certain that it would be smaller. Now we have moved the new (and yes smaller) workshop would not have been suitable. All but one wall is drywall and I have decided not to fix cupboards or hang things from it as it is part of the very special soundproofing which I have to have in order to keep the neighbours happy. Cheers. Peter

    Clear and concise Video, thank you Peter. Its a superb piece of kit and clearly is going head to head with the Kreg Precision Table, but one big difference between the two (and disappointment for me) was the lack of Jointing facilities on the fence. It's a big 'miss' on UJK's behalf to my mind, the Kreg and Bench Dog (but hard to get in UK) both have this facility.

    • @NewBritWorkshop

      Hi Clive, Maybe I am in a minority but I have never needed a jointing offset for a router fence. When I use a bit that is going to take a layer off the whole face presented I have managed by either getting the fence exactly right (so that the "high" spot goes through against the receiving fence) or by accepting that the last couple of inches will be wasted (as the feed is controlled against the in-feed fence). Peter.

    • @Clive007
      @Clive007 10 років тому

      Peter Parfitt
      Thank you for the quick reply! I'm not sure I understood your comment "the "high" spot goes through against the receiving fence" wouldn't there be a small 'gap' between the piece and the receiving fence (equal to the amount 'planed' off)?

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  10 років тому

      Hi Clive, My assumption is that one might be using a cutter with a shape of some sort rather than a straight cutter. One only needs to take enough off to create the shape of the profile. That would mean that the "high spot" has the least taken from there are would be within (say) 0.1 mm of where it started. So that part would be pushed against the out-feed fence and make little difference to the cutting process. Peter

    Thanks Peter. I was referring to the routers own fine adjuster function, sorry if I was unclear. The router elevator wouldn't be a suitable option for me unfortunately. I would need to use the routers own fine adjustment function and I am interested to know how it works, whether you have direct control on the plunge with the fine adjustment or if it is just a fine adjustment stop. I know this is straying from your video somewhat but I am interested in hearing your opinion on the matter.Thanks

    Excellent video Peter. Can you recommend a router for use with the UJK elevator please? I use a Dewalt DW625E, and have found that small cutters will not protrude through the elevator hole even on max adjustment. I have tried the router bit extension, but this introduces vibration. Your thoughts would be gratefully received. Thanks, Paul Bailey

    Just seen these videos Peter, superb as usual and such detail that everyone can always expect the very best and most honest reviews from you.
    I didn't know about the dust box for the router but had thought that a wooden one with extraction above and below would be good. As for the lift, I will be going for the big Triton TRA001 Router, as it has the above table lift built in so the bits can be changed above the table with automatic cut off when the lift is fully extended. Not sure if you have reviewed that one but it saves the cost of an additional elevator/lift.

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  6 років тому

      Hi Malcolm, I am not so keen on the dust box below the table and would prefer to use the dust port on the router for under the table and a port behind the fence for above. I have not seen the other kit that you mention. Cheers. Peter

    Hi Jay, I cannot get at mine very easily as I have the dust collection box. I have used a mirror and a torch and it appears that the height adjuster socket is open under the table. But, the locking mechanism cannot be accessed from underneath as it goes into a blind hole. The beauty of the router elevator is the simplicity of adjusting the height and then locking it in position from above the table and so I cannot think why you would want to do this from under the table. Peter

    Hi Peter,
    I watched a few of your videos, on this router table. I watched another this morning, which may have shown an upgrade for the dust box, where the cable outlet separates so you don't need to cut off the plug.
    You mentioned making some economies, though not the cheapest, the Trend T11 and T14 routers can be adjusted from above, and the T14 comes with an NVR switch. They may not be quite as accurate as you require, but would you recommend them, given your experience?
    I would like to see if you could design vents that could direct air straight to the cutter, and to the router cooling fan, using redundant vacuum cleaner nozzles and hose.

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  Рік тому +1

      Hi Philip, I am afraid that I have no knowledge of the routers that you mention. Dust collection is a big issue when routing and I have found the best way is to use the router's built in dust port (which would be connected under the router table) and then a second collection hose at the back of the fence. Bit changes can be difficult and with the UJK table (with a Dewalt 625) I had to use a collet extension. If you do this get a good one as it does have to take some strain. I no longer have the UJK table as I have had to downsize. I now use the Festool CMS-OF which is lighter and more compact. The trouble is that Festool have discontinued it and there is no replacement as yet. Peter

    No, the OF1400 is too precious to use in a router table. I am using my old Dewalt 625 - you can see it in the two assembly videos. Peter

  • @MrPatdeeee
    @MrPatdeeee 9 років тому +1

    I am not sure why most makers of under the router table "dust extraction boxes" have stopped making them; but it MIGHT be due to voiding of warranties by router manufacturers. Follow along:
    Whenever you enclose a router completely in a box and you are drawing dust filled (dirty air) particles throughout the innards and outwards of the router, there is NO way for the router "air intake" to get fresh clean air. Which is absolutely vital.
    While quality routers use sealed motor "bearings", this does nothing to stop wood chips, dirt, tar and grime from lodging between the armature and the field winding's, within the router's motor, etc.
    However the box is STILL a good idea; but the location of the intake was/is wrong. It (4" minimum hole) should be placed well ABOVE the fresh air input of the router. THEN a second hole (4" minimum) should be at the bottom of the "box". This then insures that the router's air intake (bottom) will be assured of a fresh, clean supply of air.
    But the dust extraction air flow port is now at the TOP side of box. In addition to improving dust collection efficiency, this bottom hole should have an adjustable blast gate on it, that allows one to regulate and maximize efficient dust collection and clean air flow through the router.
    IE: when you are "face" milling a board, such as grooving, there is little flow of suction air into the box. This means overheating of the router. With the above method this problem is eliminated.
    I have 4 under the table routers and all have and/or will have boxes using the above method. You can do this on any ready made "dust box". It works like a charm. Just be mindful that the blast gate at the bottom of the box, is allowing air to come IN to the box, not exit it. And there may be times when the blast gate will have to be near wide open to allow enough fresh, clean air to be drawn through the router and port at the top (side) of the box; to keep the router from over heating; not to mention sucking in dirty air through the router's air intake holes; which is the case now as they are designed.
    On the other hand, when you are using large diameter cutters; the blast gate will be adjusted almost closed; and just left open enough to permit proper router cooling.
    Adjusting of the blast gate at the bottom port now should become routine and adjusted correctly, after experimenting, balancing suction efficiency and motor cooling. In time it will become as automatic as setting your fence or cutter height, etc.
    For whatever it's worth.

I have looked all over the internet and have failed to find any info on it. Is it an actual direct fine adjustment function where the turn of a knob directly corresponds to the router moving along its plunge axis or is it just a fine adjustment stop? Thank you.

      Not directly. The sacrificial faces on the fence are in 2 pieces and it would be possible to shim one out a little of make up a slightly thicker (or thinner) sacrificial face to suit your needs. The main frame (aluminium extrusion) of the fence is in one piece and behind the sacrificial faces. Peter

    Hi Peter. Firstly thank you for the excellent video - really well presented and filmed. I've just ordered the same table, but I'm still unsure about the router lift and dust collection box. Like you I had two musts - I had to have the cast table and also a way of adjusting the bit height without going under the table. So the UJK table came up the winner (nearly bought the Trend table with the T11).I've read on a popular UK forum that I'm a member of, a member complaining that dust collects in the chain and threads of the lift, and jambs it solid, rendering the handle/lift unusable. He is constantly going under the table to free the lift of dust from its innards.One suggested solution was the use of a dry lube.Now that you've had time to play with it, have you had similar problems?Jonny

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  7 років тому

      Hi Jonny, I would not have the dust box in the future but would collect from the back of the fence and from a standard connection to the router dust collection port. That way the chain does not get coated. BTW my chain never got so clogged that it stopped moving freely. I did use dry lube. Workshop space meant that I had to get rid of one of my two router tables and the UJK was the bigger of the two. It was a sad day. Peter

      Neil Simpson Hi Neil, I was a little apprehensive about using the Dust Extraction Box but have found, through trial and error, the best setup for me. There is an adjustable air inlet which improves the air flow to the extractor and I have found that it is "tuneable" to get the best dust pick-up from below the table. Despite this I do find that the router and chain can get some dust settling and so I give it a very quick vacuum, through the hatch on the Dust Box, about once a week. Other than that bit of routine housework the rest works brilliantly. Many thanks for your kind comments. Peter

      Hi Len, Look closely at the dust collection. The best that I have experienced is when you collect at the back of the fence and from the router dust port below the table. I would not recommend the router sitting in a dust box as it covers every part of the router in dust. I think that the chain or screw drive for router lifting should be protected in some way from dust. Also, look at the ability to get a spanner on the collet. Avoid having to have a collet extension. Hi Andy, It was great meeting you and your wife as well. I used a chip extractor for the UJK table but I think that the CT26 would be better at the back of the fence. Maybe using both would be the answer if you are using the dust box underneath. If you do not have the dust box then the CT26 with a split - one part to the rear of the fence and the other to the router itself. Good luck with the workshop. Cheers. Peter

    Hi Peter, Did you ever get the 'Extended Table' Add-on that fits underneath the front of the table? If so could you do me a favor? I have purchased the same table top, but will be making a multi-drawer cabinet for all cutters, collets, spanners and jigs, etc. But I cannot find anywhere the physical size of this item so that I could work out the clearance required to allow for it, if you did purchase this option could you possibly take a ruler to it for me in passing. Just that Axminster are out of stock at the moment and no-one there has this measurement to hand. Thanks again for the great series of videos, you are costing me a fortune... (he he...)

    Hi Peter - amazing videos, thank you. One question on dust extraction with the UJK router table set-up with the twin hose to dust box and fence....
    Do you/did you connect your Festool vac to the 100mm dust port on the UJK system and if so, what hose arrangement did you use to you connect it and how effective was it?

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  5 років тому

      Hi Tim, I used my Numatic NVD750 with a 4" connector to the dust box around the router. I found that the router and the drive chain for the router lift got covered in dust. If I were to have something like this again I would use a split hose from the CT26 and have one end connected to the dust port of the router and the other end connected at the back of the fence. I would not use the dust box. Having said that a lot of people had a great success with the dust box and it may be because they had a more powerful 4" extractor. Peter

    • @timgatti1068
      @timgatti1068 5 років тому

      @@NewBritWorkshop Peter - thanks for your rapid response! Fortunately, I have a big Felder extractor to call on with a 5" hose and plenty of suction in the workshop where the new UJK table will be located, so any dust in the box should be whisked away. However, there may be occasions when the set-up may have to be re-located to an adjacent space where the Felder can't follow. In which case, I'll follow your suggestion and set up my CT26 with a Festool split hose running to a dust hood on the router and the back of the fence. Hopefully I can run the router hose through the open door of the box. The advantage of fitting the hood is that it should prevent dust and small chippings from falling down and getting inside the router. I've no chain to worry about as the Trend T11EK I'm using has an adjustment facility that can be operated from above the table - there's just a 17mm hole to be drilled in the right place through the 10mm top plate and sub-base in order to connect to it when it arrives. Sorry to miss you at the Harrogate show - a fellow boatbuilding friend from the IBTC said how much she enjoyed meeting you.

    Hi again Peter. I ordered the raiser - a fantastic thing and will be ordering the Dewalt 625 (after much consideration). Can I ask what collet extension you have on your video? And does this allow you to change bits without going under the table? I've not got my hands on the Dewalt so can't tell if it has one of those spindle locking buttons. I read that they mean going under the table to change bits. Thanks again for any advice or replies. Jonny

    • @NewBritWorkshop

      Hi Jonny, I had an old collet extension which proved to be dangerous (it actually failed) as it was too tall so I asked the technical people at Axminster for their advice. They recommended their own Axcaliber device which is what I went on the get. The beauty of this one is that the main body is made from a single piece of stainless steel and once you have it you can get all sorts of different inserts for other diameter of cutters without having to buy a complete extension each time. Here is the link: www.axminster.co.uk/axcaliber-router-collet-extension-1-2-shank-211367 With this firmly installed in the router there is no need to go under the table for cutter changes. Good luck. Peter

When selected as an option it says 'Last Few' and I can only find the MDF top available at Nuneaton and Sittingbourne. Stock of the phenolic and cast iron tops seem to be unaffected. Peter

    Hi Peter,
    I haven't built my workshop yet, which to be an extension on the side of a new garage, but while it will be a reasonable size it won't be huge, so I have been investigating the Hammer C3-31 which is manufactured by Felder in Austria. It gets fantastic reviews, but it does mean I shall have a spindle moulder, but of high quality. I take your point about the cost of cutters, but there are always compromises whichever way you go. Have you come across Felder/Hammer in your travels? Steve

    So Peter,
    I'm planning on buying a router table set up with the view to making a shaker style kitchen as my first project. I have been looking at the festool CMS system but when I priced the complete set I was stunned that with a router, it was a few hundred pounds short of £3000. Then I saw your excellent video on the UJK router table which seems to be more what I am looking for (my set up can be stationary).
    My question to you is that being in the enviable situation of having both systems in your workshop, which do you think is the best? Also, which DeWalt router are you using in your UJK set up?
    Lastly, do you have any advice on where to source/buy quality timber from for such a project?
    Many thanks,
    Matt

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  10 років тому

      Hi Matt
      For mobile use and flexibility the Festool CMS wins every time. Remember that Festool kit is part of a system and so once you have the base unit you can add more and more modules. The router can be put in or taken out of the unit in 2 minutes and can then be used for other tasks.
      For your budget the UJK probably wins but go for the cast iron top. I use the CMT version of the Dewalt 625 which is a good router. You will need a collet extension of course. Once the router is in that setup it has to stay there.
      For timber you need to visit the timber yards in your area and check their prices and get a feel for the sort of people they are.
      Peter

      Peter Parfitt Hi Peter,
      Similar to Evans I'm also just looking at getting a CMS with a 2200 in it, table and router were 1500€ (ex vat, i'm vat registered) in Belgium so that seemed not too bad, considering I can use the 2200 separately and get a few other inserts as time goes on. Maybe a sliding table/mitre is a must have?
      Would you go for the UJK over the CMS given the option? I'd like a spindle moulder, but as you mention you've got to go well over 3-4k for a good one plus tools for it. Maybe the CMS is a good step on the ladder as it were, and a spindle moulder could come in time if I have a more pronounced need for one? Space is no problem for me and at present i don't need to take it on site...
      Thanks for all your videos. It's funny after having 'grown up' internet wood working wise on the New Yankee workshop, David.J.Marks and The Wood Whisperer, to finally have a fellow UK woodworker putting himself out there. Good to see.
      All the best and KBO,
      Charlie

      Charlie Whittuck Hi Charlie, First very many thanks for your very supportive comments - it really does help. I think in your situation the ability to use the router both in and out of the table tips the balance in favour of the CMS unit with the OF 2200. That router is the most fantastic piece of engineering and a joy to use - a real gentle giant. I have mine in the CMS-OF where it gives excellent service but is always available for freehand work if required. I hope that answers your question. I really hope to meet Norm Abram one day as I learnt so much from him. I liked his presentational style, his complete ease when working in the workshop and his ability to take you through all of the stages so logically. Cheers. Peter

      Peter Parfitt Hey Peter,
      I'd love to meet Norm too, and maybe go to Nantucket or Maine to see a Shaker museum or two... They're on my pilgrimage list along with the Lie Nielsen shop.
      Few! I was hoping you'd say that. As much as I like the look of the router table I just can't help but feel it wouldn't be as much of a pleasure as the CMS with a 2200 in it, perhaps not as well designed either? I've looked at the 2200 in the shop and it's indeed massive, i'm curious as to how it would get used in a day to day setting, no doubt it's well suited to the job, vorsprung dutch technik and all that :)
      Looks like i'll need a solid job to get a spindle moulder another time, Felder one would be ace.
      Can we see your work anywhere online? Feel free to check out my whittling here! www.whittuck.com
      Thanks for your time,
      Charlie

      Chris Brickell Hi Chris, I know that I have and still use the dust box but if I had my time over I would just have the collection from above at the back of the fence and another one from the router itself. You could also make a box of your own just to contain any extra dust that might escape. I can think of many things that you should spend £157 on ! Cheers. Peter

      Hi Michael, The UJK setup has a terrific fence and the cast iron top is fantastic. However, I think that the dust collection on the Festool table is superb and it is so easy to set up. I use my OF1400 in the table and it has all the power that I need. Because of space in my workshop I had to let the UJK table go as it was quite large. Cheers. Peter

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Chris, It is an excellent table and the cast iron makes the whole thing so smooth and stable. The professional fence is also brilliant. However, you do need a collet extension in order to make cutter changes easier. Axminster make their own and it is excellent. The dust collection is probably better done without the dust box arrangement as that does mean that the router and the lifting mechanism is constantly in the dust. I would rely entirely on the port at the back of the fence and the dust arrangements of the router in use. You therefore need a split hoe or two hoses. Because of space I use the Festool CMS-TS (no longer made by Festool) as it is compact, easy to move and its dust collection is brilliant although the fence leave a lot to be desired. Peter
