BAFTA winning Grand Designs is widely recognised as the pre-eminent series on modern architecture and design in Britain. It was originally conceived as a documentary series presented by designer and writer Kevin McCloud that takes us into the heart of life’s great unfolding human stories, where ordinary families risk all to experiment with architecture, technology, and their own lifestyle.
Now in its 24h year, Grand Designs is one of Channel 4’s biggest returnable factual series and has grown into a global phenomenon, selling in over 100 territories. Apart from the TV series, the Grand Designs brand has also expanded to include books, a monthly magazine, architectural awards and a biannual exhibition, Grand Designs Live.

Ego is a rough thing to deal with at all levels.

The owners are perfectly happy with their new home and the compromises they made to get them there. One could argue that the original design was compromised, but the home is structurally sound, has a beautiful setting and looks quite cozy and comfortable for this retired couple. I appreciated Peter's enthusiasm for the build, that he challenged himself and did quite a bit of research. In the end they got the house they wanted, so good for them.

The gif certainly isn’t in the details in this house.

An episode which confirms the need for excellent architecture, delicately carried through. So many compromises here, not easily rectified by future owners. It could have been so much better.

And they don't even realize that they've been disrespectful.

Painful watching the climbdown from Mies, but that's rich clients for you. It is after all their money. Peter's a man who hasn't heard no in a very long time. And yes, they will be smelling those sheep forever.
It's a public library, in the end. Not a bad thing at all, but a very long way from the angelically weightless brutal mass of the inspiration.

This episode confirms that without professional help, what could have been extraordinary just isn't.

Kevin can be an architectural purist, whereas some folk actually just want to build a "home" with some "architecture" attached. Whilst I am no fan of the gung-ho build and design method, I think that dishing-out his usual almost-pompous views on design origins and corner cutting, is sadly not unsurprising. Having said that, and having watched pretty much every episode since the beginning and having felt the same about Kevin's usual glass half empty views, he does write absolutely wonderful scripts which always - without fail - offer fascinating insights into this whole world.

Excentric in what way? Does every distinquished lady not spend her time with 17 animal shelter organisations and leave the bother of housebuilding to the man.

Just for once a guy actually pulls of something he wants, inside of budget, but not following an architects specific designs. And you have an issue with this.? Are you going to live there?

As an architecture enthusiast this episode was painful to watch. It’s his money so obviously he built what he wanted. But he reveals his limited understanding of Mies van der Rohe. His house has none of the elegance of the Barcelona Pavilion.
