The problem in this case is that the rest of the world has very different paradigms in regards to racism to the one we have in Argentina. They can´t comprehend how we step onto the street and cross paths with people from every ethnicity and don´t even bat an eye, even calling them nicknames noting this characteristics ("negro", "chino", etc.). We are definitely a racist country, but mostly towards indigenous and bordering countries and not in the rest of the worlds terms, so to speak.
Moreover, people in europe and USA have the flaw of being too literal, so they hear this song and can´t help but feel hurt, while in Argentina, we just take it as it is; a football song without a real meaning beyond bothering the oposing team. We don´t really mean what the lyrics say.
Is the song racist? Yes
Should they have been singing it? Absolutely not.
Should they apologise? Most definitely.
But i don´t think its as trascending as you make it seem, Enzo just didn´t mean to hurt no one and has already apologised.
What Argentinians think is irrelevant. The French players consider it offensive and racist and they shouldn't have to tolerate ignorance in this day and age. The players all play in Europe anyway. They should know better.
@@adtastic1533 Enzo is a 23 years old football player and grew up in a shanty town in Argentina, he is not a PhD in racial studies graduated from Oxford. He made a comment he didn´t mean, and he apologised for it. There is not much more to it.
By your arguement, you could also argue that the rest of the world is ignorant for not understanding the nature of football songs in Argentina, where the song was sung in the first place. Just beacuse you don´t understand the context, it doesn´t mean something its wrong.
Again, Enzo already apologised and will probably face fine, so there isn´t much more to it.
@@laraboneta1 Well, Enzo will be getting a significant suspension but will ultimately be fine. But it's not really the responsibility of black players, or the rest of the world for that matter, to understand Argentinian culture. The responsibility is on players and fans, from whatever country, to not say racist things. Like I said, all these players live in Europe. They get paid big money from European clubs. They have to understand how these things are perceived. Or else it will reflect badly on them and their country.
@@adtastic1533 I'll be surprised if Enzo he suspended more than two matches, since Chelsea paid 107 million pounds for him and I'm sure they will want him playing asap. Although you're right, as he should've been more careful with what he posted, since he is a public person and all, maybe the aggravated players should have made an effort to not take the song at face value and try to understand the context in which it was being sung before taking shots at Enzo and everyone involved.
The thing is a lot of Argentinians would get offended if i call Messi "Italian", and then feign ignorance on what was wrong in that chant
So if African teams were full of white players native Africans would never mention it? You’re a complete hypocrite. As usual one rule for ‘white’ people and another rule for everyone else to be racist to white people
Using that logic it’s racist to have non native players over native players…. If white players replaced African players you’d call them colonisers and racists… so have that same energy when ur people do it to European countries

@@shonehi546tim9 yeah, it’s small as it was about three generations from his birth. Which is common from I read of his generation. You can do further research on the matter.
They forget, that Argentinians are not native to Argentina 💁♂️
Many of them were Italians and Germans fleeing after losing WW2.
There's a significant minority of indigenous Argentineans and like 40% of argentines are mixed with indigenous blood, some very noticeable, others look pretty White but have cousins, brothers with darker skin. Tevez, Agüero, romero, chiquito romero, Riquelme, paredes, Maradona, housseman, Lautaro Martínez, just to name a few have Brown skin and indigenous amcestry to a higher or Lower degree. Black argentines are less but in the 66 world cup and 78 world cup we had two black players. A goalkeeper in 78 and 66 i don't remember the position. Basically black people here are like asians, a very small minority. Its the same In most neighboring countries except Uruguay and Brazil (Paraguay, bolivia, chile have similar percentages of afrodescendant people) it was simply because the economy of our country during the colonial period didnt need that much slaves, and mostly indigenous, or mixed people worked on the fields in generally speaking not heavy labor (mostly taking care of cows, or not so labor intensive crop) also slave owners probably moved to Brazil or Uruguay countries that kept legislation that favored slavery for longer. Also the population of our country was like 30% black in some provinces but at the Time a Lot of the country was just populated by indigenous people with no contact with civilization, and before european inmigration the country total population was very small for the size. This kid Is incorrect that most indigenous people were erradiacted he simply needs to visit other provinces or realize most Brown people are mixed with indigenous not black (some may have some african descend), but there were genocides against certain indigenous populations who were indeed erradicated, just not indigenous as like phenotypically or genetically indigenous people because many survive to this day.
Personally im a Brown skinned guy, in buenos aires like 30 or 40% of people look like me and like 5% look straight out of bolivia, like a 100% indigenous. Some of us have indigenous ancestry from people native to argentina (i would say a majority of Brown mixed looking people) and some from other countries of the region (i would say in buenos aires most descend from bolivians Perúvians or northern provinces of argentina).
@@masterchief-yj7yw so that's an excuse to sing racist chant? I don't think so
There's chants against jews for a football team of mostly jew fan base, and then the jewish team says racist things against their rival who Is mostly of indigenous background. Even the bolivian looking guys from Chacarita carried nazi flags some times when many looked like Brown Indians. Basically a Lot of argentines are ignorant and not politically correct and say racist stuff even to eachother, but i would say a Lot of people who say racist stuff maybe are a little racist but not to a point of hate or Lets say im not gonna have jew fríends or bolivia fríends or black fríends. So yeah, saying racist stuff for a long Time was More normalized than most countries, even tho not necessarily the people who Said it are as racist as racist from other More politically correct country where if you say something like that you are like a kkk member, here Is just to troll or make mad the fans of the rival club. For example Is kinda like insulting somebody calling an fgt and being cool with gay people. Its not to justify or say the national team players are not racist or xenophobic, likely they are a little bit, but mainly insensitive and just sing stuff to talk crap about their rivals because honestly in argentina it was the norm to say non politically correct stuff specially in football stadiums.
@@Monkey.D.Shinchanits not an excuse, just bringing More context because i sometimes feel like foreigners think we are blonde nazi germany descendants who believe blacks are dumber or inferior and that Isnt the reality of almost anybody living here and not even of racist Argentine people
As a french guy i have to say thank you for giving me hope about argentinians because what im seeing from the last 24 hours on social medias is disgusting . And not only from argentinians i see a lot of people around the world saying that this song have nothing racist about it and people saying racist slurs towards wesley fofana , enzo fernandez teamates from chelsea because he called him out. I do understand that the players are not racist because they will not play with black people if it was the case but argentinians seems really not aware of the situation of how black people suffer just because they have another skin color .

As a fellow argentine who is also very disgusted with how little we, us a population, know about our own history on this topic, I'm glad you decided to talk about it with such well informed and educated manner.
The effects of Sarmiento's policies on the formation of national identity, though it failed to be what he wished for, it had on particular effect which is that the sentimient refering to our history was free to be molded and designed by a ruling class unto a majority of people who just became argentines and got throught the official version and the already blurry lines on race that we learned from colonial times got even more blurry. Our relationship with race may be different from other countries, but that doesn't excuse us to be uneducated about our own past.

Not just something, it's a World Cup and 2 Copa america back to back. But 35 years was long enough for someone to hear the wakeup call. These guys only love themselves and have no respect for anyone else. Why should they care about us. I'm also fed up with toxic Messi fanboys pop up out of nowhere from all over the world. Enough is enough.
Enzo Fernandez was my favourite footballer out of the bunch. I have his poster on my wall and his jersey. Too bad. But if he wanna act that way, f*ck him!
I'm glad that you're not taking this lightly either. Sometimes, we are too soft with blatant wickedness. The only way some people learn is by consequences.

Well said for standing up and speaking out against what was unacceptable decision-making on the part of the Argentinian team following their Copa America victory. My other question is where were the leadership officials, who must have been on the bus as well, why did they not intervene??
It’s one thing for some ignorant Argentinian fans to chant this, but when a professional football player starts chanting it for no reason and knows the lyrics, it’s shocking.
Fernandez started the chant and recorded himself. Imagine what goes on that’s not recorded.
The Chelsea players with African descent have every rights to feel that way. Imagine having a coworker that pokes fun of you and insult you behind closed doors.
Well said renk, glad to see an Argentine condemn this behaviour👏
On the other hand, i'am sad by the nonsense of the world accusing Enzo of being racist when the Africans themselves are saying that the song is not racist and that they think that : that the French is made up of africans.

Just because their parents aren’t born in France, doesn’t mean they have to represent the country that their parents are from. What I don't understand is, why they started singing about France randomly?! The Copa America has nothing to do with France or any European nation for that matter
It's not random, but a beef against Mbappe. When Mbappe started criticizing football in South America in 2021 people took it really bad here. And then again, last week he said the Euro is harder than the World Cup. Those kinds of comments are perceived as European supremacist thought, especially if you take into account the competitiveness and diversity of South American football. Copa Libertadores and the South American World Cup qualifiers are among the fiercest football competitions worldwide, so we don't like to be looked down on. In this light, some fans in Argentina created a sufficiently offensive song to poke the so-called European superiority of the French squad and it became a massive hit.
@@emilianoestevarena5071 So a 2021 beef with Mbappe justifies racist chants about ALL the other black French players in 2024 at the Copa America??
@@sergeayissi939 Mbappe is racist, and you don't even realize it. How do you think a South American feels if an European dismisses our hard work in football in open TV with airs of superiority and everyone claps him? @@emilianoestevarena5071 Mbappe is not racist as South America is not just one race! European football won 4 straight world cups and that is a fact. European Cup is harder than Copa America it's a fact! I prefer to play Canada, Colombia, Panama and Peru. It's easier than playing Portugal, Spain, Germany, France. How is that racist?
@@sergeayissi939 Now you are being racist like Mbappe. South America is one as far as I know in terms of football, and it shows in its culture. I'll grant that some teams are easier to beat but you are downplaying our hierarchy in football, which has proven to win an aggregate of 13 world cups throughout history. Mbappe may be the next greatest player in the world. But for more than 50 years, this title has belonged to us South Americans. You Europeans have to humble yourselves and give credit where it's due. I yet have to see France playing in the conditions we play in South America. I don't think they'll dominate that easily. Europe isn't better than anything in the world, much less in football. Your "Europe is better" mentality is the source of racism worldwide, keep it in check.
Thank you for all the historical context & explanation. I found this very informative.
As an England fan, I find it so weird that Argentine fans and players now have a rivalry with France over immigration. Wtaf lol
It’s because Mbappe made comments diminishing the competition level of Copa America vs the Euro twice, back in 2022 and again earlier this month, this song was aimed at him since he started those comments two years ago. Plus, they received the chants they made about Messi and his legs condition, and this was their response. There is a lot in the picture no one is covering conveniently…

Excellent, intelligent discussion with appropriate background information. The best I have heard on the subject!
I am from Asia. I read the chant lyrics many times. I still don't get what is the fuss/racist about it? Last month, the World Cup Cricket was held in the USA and Caribbean islands. The South Africa team has mostly white players, so did Zimbabwe team which until a few years ago had 9 white players out of 11. Nobody even cared or dwelt upon it. But since it involves Black, it becomes a mountain out of a molehill situation.
Me da esperanza.
The West/Europe views the rest of the world from their prism. They judge anyone who don't conform to their set of rules and mindset. Here is an example. My friends and I ride on motorcycle to the hills on weekends. We take pictures. On one photo my friend sat on the viewpoint railing and I stood in front of him. He rested his hands on my shoulders. We took group photos of us friends standing shoulder to shoulder. My friend emigrated to US. His American fiancé was so nervous that other Americans would call my friend a homo/gay. She deleted all his motorcycle trip pictures! She even got anxiety when he would call home to talk to us. In our country we don't even think in such manner.

I'm in Haiti, and fan of Brazil national team. Kilyan MBappe started all this beef back in 2022 when he was trying to minimize Messi an Neymar with Argentina and Brazil, trying to prove that he is able to win world cup and not them.
But I still condemn the chant because it is innapropriate, and MBappe was acting alone, but the chant mentioned France globally. If the chant remained on MBappe solely, I would agree because MBappe asked for it, it now gets it. But leave France and the other players alone, they had nothing with this.

I'm from Ushuaia, and i agree with everything you have said in the video.
The lack of responsibility from AFA and the players is disappointing as a whole, and they should take accountability and accept that singing that chant was absolutely wrong and that should never happen again and it's unfair that only Enzo Fernandez is being thrown under the bus while the remaining players aren't taking responsibility as well.
It's still really upsetting seeing people all over the globe to label us as a country full of racist nazis when it's far from the truth.
While Argentina has lots of issues regarding racism, classism, xenophobia, and even homophobia (despite us being very progressive regarding the LGBTQ+ community), we will welcome everyone with open arms no matter where they're from or the color of their skin.
We have to be more educated in regard to the topic of afro-argentines and the indigenous population, and i see us getting there eventually but we still have a long way to go. I'm glad to see fellow argentines who feel the same way you and i do.

Your type of person is needed to make this world a better place for every human being.......Kudos
The world is a massive place, full of different people who all have different ideas on what is acceptable. You're never going to have a global population that thinks and behaves in the same way and it's about time people stop expecting this to ever happen, it can't and won't. Whether we like it or not one person's distasteful is another person's banter.
NOT when it comes to International Events on the World Stage. This attitude is EXACTLY why this shit continues. Becuase people don't take it seriously, so Football continues to have Racists in the sport and among its fans. When they start banning, fining and suspending these people then it will stop. Not when people keep looking the other way. Football has tolerated this garbage for too long. Stop excusing it
Best comment here.
I didnt know racism and banter were the same thing
@@tofussss we are slowly changing and become More similar to the rest of the world. But some decades ago some Atlanta fans (a Lot jewish) would sing racist and xenophobic chants against Chacarita fans (mostly Brown and poor, many descending from inmigrants from neighboring countries) and the Chacarita fans would say horrible antisemitic things. And it was just banter, and outside the field (even if a Lot would probably deep down actually be racist to a Lower or higher degree) most would get along with jews, or bolivians and paraguayans. Basically yeah racism sometimes in Argentina was kinda accepted as just banter, but we slowly are becoming More politically correct, hopefully poverty lessens so we get more educated as a society.
@@masterchief-yj7yw i dont think its about being 'politically correct', I just think its about getting rid of division between people. There's racial humour and then there's racist humour, and sadly some people think they're both the same and get upset when you call it out
Thank u...u are as real as it gets.
No great surprise that the Argentine team sang a song like that. Doing what they do best.
Ignorance is the true enemy. It’s sad seeing what happened in the dressing room.
Your video is a welcome contribution to this debate, and you have been very self-reflective, honest and self-critical.
Is there not a wider problem in Argentina in regards to anti-black racism though? The 'education', which some people mention here, needs to simply start with Argentina itself:
1. During the 18th and 19th centuries Afro-Argentines accounted for up to fifty percent of the population in certain cities.
2. historically, the overwhelming majority of Nazi war fugitives fled to Argentina. Conduct more research. See the books of Wiesenthal (1989), Rein (2020), Goñi (2022) and importantly, Steinacher (2012: 211) in his book Nazis on the Run.
3. Afro-Argentines such as Maria Remedios del Valle (1768-1847); Domingo Sosa (1788-1866); Josè Maria Morales (1818-1894); Lorenzo Barcala (1793-1835) - have been forgotten in the national psyche.
4. Forgetting the fact that the Guarani peoples are the original Argentines and they were effectively massacred by European usurpers.
5. I understand that not all of the team were there. A few, like possibly Lo Celso and Romero - so Fernández should not be made the scape-goat. Also, Messi should have come out to distance himself and the squad from such vile behaviour.
A really balanced and honest response...this is the first time I'm seeing any video of yours....props to you
Superb! Well done. Educated, balanced and kind.
Sure it doesn't define them if they apologize but instead they're doubling down. It's their continued arrogance that defines them not the mistake (assuming that it is a mistake).
Thank you for exposing them.
Such a well thought response! Big up Renk👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
Well said buddy
Would the Argentinian players like it if people said they have Nazi origins?
Probably not, would be a fair response
Thank you brother, great video.
Well said young man. Thank you for speaking up.
Cheers from USA, animo raza. 🇺🇸🇲🇽🇦🇷
I came here from Green Turf. THANK YOU for the history. People are angry now and the history of Argentina is being exaggerated in negative ways and and downplayed in the positive ways. Either way, this is a disgrace.
Thank you for this video. An appropriate response.
Very nice and excellent video, thanks for your knowledge with history
You have to memorize a song to sing it. Maria Remedios del valle & Jacinto Ventura de Molina
Subscribed for this video. Keep it up mate
Same here
👊🏿🙏🏿💯
This guy earned my respect and a follow/subscription
Well said Renk! Inexcusable is the word.
i don't know how to put into words what i want to say but what a beautiful video 🇦🇷🇺🇲
Menos mal.
France owns a part of Guyana, it’s called French Guyana and people are black there but have been French for generations. In France, your color means nothing. There is also a large Asian community, many were born in France, speak French, are completely French.
I’m not saying there is no racism in France because it’s completely false unfortunately, I’m saying you can’t tell someone is French or not based on color.
Well said young man
The image and optics are not the issue. And they are not uneducated because naming African countries is inaccurate given that they are all French. They are saying it due to the color of their skin, it's straight up racism. Something that is ingrained in Buenos Aires' culture. And it will never be ruled out with timid responses like yours.
I'm also shocked by your shock.
Argentina society is a sick anti-Black racist country.
Argentina slaughtered all it Black citizens, soon after it gained independent from Spain, in other to keep Argentina white. White Argentinians also stole the land of Argentina, off the Native Indians and murdered them as well. All the white people in Argentina are from Europe and they are not indigenous to Argentina.
A majority of Nazis officials and soldiers from Adolf Hitler German Reich,
fled to Argentina, after Nazis Germany was defeated, because they knew
of Argentina's crimes of Holocaust against Black Argentinians and how they would be welcomed in Argentina and they were right.
Enzo Fernandez represserbt the anti-Black racist ideology of a majority
of White Argentinians.
Chelsea had a reputation as an anti-Black racist club,. So if Chelsea
does not put this Enzo Fernandez anti-Black racist on the transfer list,
the world will see Chelsea for whom they are.
Do you even live in BsAs? It doesn't seem like it, racism is not a problem here, clasism very much is. The fact that racism isn't a problem means that people aren't as easily triggered by racism as the actually racist countries such as France, hence why they are not afraid of using it as a weapon when necessary.
I remember Suarez was once accused of racism because he used a slur to defend himself from a guy that discriminated him for being Uruguayan, this is the same thing, Europeans wanting to apply European logic to everything and having world class double standards.
Don't get me wrong, what enzo did was bad, this isn't a good look, but saying Argentina is racist because of this is utter nonsense and you don't know what you are taking about.
@@marcossidoruk8033 We live in capitalism so obviously there is a class struggle, workers vs capitalists. But if you are a person of color, you are more oppressed. If you are a person of color and a women, you're more oppressed. It's called intersectionality.
How can you say that there is no racism in Argentina!? Paraguayan and Bolivian are used as an insult. Have you heard about the term "cabecita negra"? There is a long history of racism in Argentina. Do you even live there?
@@sebastianbardon391 Those terms are Xenophobic and Classist, not racist. You not being able to tell that speaks volumes of your capacity for critical thought.
@@sebastianbardon391 Those terms are Xenophobic and Classist, not racist. You not being able to tell that speaks volumes of your capacity for critical thought.
Besides, even Xenophobia in the modern day Argentina is very rare, much, much more rare than the US for example. You seem to be critically online, you never talked seriously to actual immigrants, thats for sure.
Auxz sent me to this video. Very educational video
Thanks for exposing and your words were spot on
Thanks for this video from a Black French man. Education is the key. 👍
...well said....never underestimate the power of ignorance...
Man, you are a young and intelligent individual! Keep being realistic and real humans will follow you.
Yeah they’re just obsessed at this point no other country does this, attacking players ancestry even tho they were born in France. Argentinians players won’t dare talk about their German and Italian ancestry their hypocrites plain and simple. Wouldn’t expect less from a country like Argentina
Im not defending them but I think you got a wrong idea of where the German and Italian ancestry comes from. Players will 100% mention it if they're aware of it. Like messi wouldn't doubt on tell you his family is Italian or macallister that his family is Irish.
@@Elmex08 He was refering to those who fly italy and Germany After WW2 for obvious reasons. Not sure if the players will openly talk about having a nazi or fachist granfather....
@@meripyare I know. They most likely don't that's the thing. The amount of nazi and Italian fascist refugees was too little.to have an influence and most of the immigration got to argentina decades before the war
You've earned yourself a new subscriber... Thank you for your thoughts.
Thank You for calling out what it is. I've supported this team even tho I'm not Argentinian I have Colombian friends who always told me why are you supporting a racist country, I always said to them you can't color everyone with the same brush - now I feel so awkward because honestly the whole team should their heads in shame you have no idea how many non Argentinians love this team because of Football and now I hope all the players and the team comes out and apologizes because man this is not a good look. Hopefully they learn from this and become better people and also realize they are representing a whole country. Anyways indeed very stupid of the team not just Enzo to do what they did, I will still continue supporting Argentina and believe that people deserve a second chance because unfortunately racism exists everywhere. Sad Sad Sad what should have been an enjoyable time turned to something so ugly
Definitely well said and covered everything 👌🏽
Well said young man 👏🏽👏🏽
the difficult aspect of these actions is not that these players did not know ... there was no lack of knowledge around what they were singing ... nor insensitivity to cultural differences. It was the ignorance of the offensive nature of the song that really "hits home". These players willfully intentionally sang this song and knew the words like they all sang it together before ...
Very disrespectful to do that, but well said. Responses are yet to be cleared for good. 👍
Thanks for educating me on this. One thing I’ve always wanted to know… Was Juan Seba Veron mixed race? It’s hard to tell as he always shaved his hair.
Great player…
i'm guessing he was? not entirely sure
@RemofRenaissance You mean as black and mixed? Not sure. None of his parents are visibly black, though they could have African ancestry in their past.
@@Elmex08 yes clearly not half but maybe a trace. His father I’ve seen and he is clearly white to me though. Just interested to know.
@@RemofRenaissance his dad's family was from one part of the country with a high concentration of native ancestry it could be that, also there could me some middle Eastern in there which is pretty common in Argentina. But yeah he is definitely mixed to a certain degree
