I recently started collecting for the Neo Geo CD and I'm really loving it. Load times aren't really as big an issue as most people would lead you to believe unless you're playing a late release fighting game like Last Blade or King of Fighters '99. Those games are atrocious when it comes to loading. On the flip side there are many games, like Magician Lord, that don't need to load at any time past the initial game startup. Others may only take a few seconds in-between levels. I guess it all depends on what kind of Neo Geo player you are though. I myself am very picky about my fighting games which seems to be the genre that suffers most from loading times on the CD. I usually prefer to play SNK's compliment of brawlers, shmups, racers, side scrollers and platformers. If I had to list the pros and cons of the CD it would be this:
Pros:
- Many games have amazing enhanced/arranged soundtracks. Compare OST's from AES and CD; the difference is night and day.
- Games are cheaper... at least for Neo Geo. Don't expect PS2 levels of cheap, but it's far better than AES and MVS prices.
- The CD, while not too cheap, is still more affordable than an AES or consolized MVS. I imported my model 2 CD in box for $250.
- The CD has S-Video and RCA Stereo audio in the back. The AES has stereo, but it was a 3.5mm jack in the front Genesis style.
- The CD games are much easier to store. CD's in jewel cases take much less space than a large cartridge in a huge plastic case.
- The CD has no copy protection so you can use burned CD media. Making backups to help preserve your collection is pretty nice.
- The CD has some exclusive titles. Not a lot, but a bit of what is there is pretty darn cool: Crossed Swords 2, Samsho RPG, ect.
Cons:
- Some games do have legitimate loading issues. Fighting games in particular suffered the most from this, especially later ones.
- CD consoles tend to wear down faster due to having more moving parts. Expect to have to replace the CD drive someday.
- The CDZ has a specific design flaw that makes it overheat. On top of that its almost as expensive as an AES, not worth it imho.
- The AES and MVS overall got more games. Some never made it to the CD like a few Metal Slugs and a ton of other good ones.
- CD's are more fragile than cartridges. They degrade over time and pray if you buy them online that your seller packs them good.
- The CD controllers break very easily. The micro switches for the d-pad are flawed and proprietary, making repairs more difficult.
- The CD consoles need a power supply that has a proprietary connector. Sourcing a replacement is difficult and expensive.
I remember being a kid in the 90s and the NeoGeo was that ultra cool unabtanium you saw being sold in the back of gaming magazines. I mean at one point the games where more expensive than some coronals. lol. Also if you found a Neo Geo Arcade machine you always flocked to it,,,especially the 4 in 1s. Its too bad that by the time they had an affordable system and games the market had passed then over as their game list was so small and pricing had prevented them from getting a foot hold in most homes. I don't think people ever saw them as price competitive even when they went CD base. Still I love collecting the games on steam and switch now as the are finally affordable retro fun.
These games run very well on stand-alone emulators for modded PSP's & OG X-Boxes. The PSP NG-CD emulator is really impressive.
*Cool little Documentry, thank you for that* ... Neo Geo was allways the one to have (IMO) Still is... Great thing is there are so many choices out there, Collecting Original or Emultaion. We can all still enjoy the games.

I have a aes but only 5 games.. So I recently bought a neo geo cdz and damn 😍 I'm sooooo in love with it! Soooooo much that I already have like 30 games for it
Awesome console , but yeah the load times were crazy, you can mod it with a sdloader which cuts the load times down

Load times, it takes 5 min. to load into most the games i play now. For neo geo games i'd wait 10 ;-)
Wicked I own the KOF collection , Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury vol 1,2 , world Heroes and the Neo Geo collection on the Ps2. But cool collection I collect for it but it's really expensive.

I have a pair of the Model 2 arcade sticks. It's interesting to see the variance in manufacturing. One of them is black like the AES console but the other one is dark grey like the CDZ console.

Can't be as slow to load as myC64 but the NeoGeo cd has moving parts that will wear out inside the console. How durable are they going to be versus an AES?

I think that was the thing of the passed, realizing ps1 and saturn where 2 speeds 🤣
I think they were thinking of finally getting their costs down were people could see it as affordable. It wasn't just load times that killed it though. I'm a child of the 80s and 90s. IMO it was Atari syndrom. They kept making the same games and they seemed to have very little 3rd party support. Ueah I could finally afford King of fighters or Fatal Fury and Metalslug but there were like 5 different versions by that point. Hell they had 1 rpg. The Sega CD had more variety than the NeoGeo CD and the console was still expensive compared to a Saturn or PlayStation.
Also I think there was no 3d games for it. Ridge Racer, Sega Rally, and Virtual fighter sold a shit ton of consoles. I supposed its a bit ironic that people want retro sprites now over old polygons. NeoGeo sprites have aged very well.
A kind of masochism to play that console today. In comparison to Pandora’s box it absolutely sucks
To each their own, I have both the AES and the CD. And i frequently play on both.
Interesting. I have a Family Pocket FC3000 V2 with perfect neo Geo emulation but the loading screen on some of the games I thought was taking too long. It appears that even the load times are emulated accurately. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not but im 8mpressed by the accuracy for such a cheap device.

...my favorite way is to play all my NES-SNES-GENESIS-NEO-GEO-SEGA CD FULL COLLECTION that i downloaded myself for FREE on my CFW PS3 2TB Internal HDD. 0 CENTS Spent ! ;)

I believe it does. Last Resort was an unofficial game that was sold on a CD-R.
I like the neogeo games, but I can't see myself buying the console.

James Heitmann MVS is best way to go,but it’s still expensive I just bought blazing Star and Sengoku 3 for 360£ then I got two shop boxes for then another 60£ so all in 420£ for 2 games granted these are the more expensive games bought king monsters for 75£ baseball stars 2 100£ cheapest games were neo turf master and super side kick 4 30-40£ but shop boxes cost atleast 30£
looking at the games run on that flat panel looks ugly, everything is stretched out. Not a good representation.

Very high quality, but I dunno Neo Geo games are all the same imo. Not that great gameplay.
