The E46, E92, M3's ran 10W60. That oil was used for the bearings, but it wasn't the only reason. The high revving engines, the lack of oil pressure from the pumps, and material of the rod bearings caused them to fail. Castrol developed the oil to be able to not break down as quickly on the race tracks due to heat, friction, and 8k plus rpm. Vanos relies heavily on oil pressure to be high and with a lower viscosity, the oil breaks down faster with the heat causing more vanos issues.
