I learned more about "self defence" in 18min than 47 years of imaginary situations id created in my head. The intensity of the teaching is exactly how we need to hear it.
Great stuff. I am 70. marine, I learned from an instructor at 18 on this He was 65! I am small boned, slight everywhere. Picked on a lot. Never lost a street fight. Element of surprise!! I did all the karate, tournaments, etc. This man is absolutely right. My father showed me how to slip a punch from age 2.

I took one of your classes , over 20 years ago ( I was already in another system and didn't want to stop, I should have stopped , I learned more in that one class then I did in five years of kempo) and my niece and friend were your students. Amazing that you have the same energy as you did all those years ago. Stay safe, stay healthy.

He really cares about people enough ti show them stuff they can learn quickly that really works, and not have to take 20 years to be able to do it…..
What he is not so passively emphasising is you have to be fit and you have to train with purpose in order to defend offensively. It needs learning it's not natural. I'd like this man to be my trainer. If you come as a humble student he'll stridently train you within your limits and help you advance. The shouting is great. It makes a student focus. Violent crime is really rare here. The cops are calm too....no handcuffing if you're not belligerent.
As a Judo practitioner, I must say, your methods and teachings remind me of “verbal Judo” which we use in self-defense situations. Avoiding conflict and learning to quickly take down if that doesn’t work.
You are on point. I am from the old school of fighting. And I did shotokan, Tichi, wing chin, and jujitsu. I started to combine different arts. I am also a street fighter first. And what you demonstrated. Is exactly what I use on the streets of NYC. I ended before it got serious. And walked away. I even used that same technique against taller guys with a ten inch kitchen knife and walked away. Your fighting style works. Because it makes sense and it the real deal. From just what I saw on video it looks like you teach in NYC. Much respect to you. You are a real teacher. Who teaches a real way to fight. God Bless You.
This is awesome! Back in the 80’s I trained in Kung fu. Our teacher was a street fighter also. I used the element of surprise 3 times on 3 separate occasions on the same guy. Each time he would approach me and he proclaimed he was going to “kick my ass“ then proceeded to take off his jacket. As he was taking off his jacket I popped him with a jab and a cross and game over! I always was prepared to hit first or run first if I was ever out numbered. I was also taught to wear a belt when ever possible and be prepared to use it to defend against weapon attacks. I’m grateful to be able to train even now at 60. Your video just popped up in my feed and you earned another subscriber!
Love the speech at the end, today's anything is soft, no one trains hard, people get hurt by words not like back in the day when a bully actually hit you but now kids are offing themselves because people say mean things online. There's no school like the old school so I love the way this man breaks it down seriously I miss this kind of teacher we need more of these folks in the public education system! 👏👏👏👏
Long ago, when I was in my 20s, self-defense training options were very limited. Krav Maga was unheard of, for example. Pretty much everything was Karate or Judo. I did join a nearby Korean karate group for a while, though. I didn't last long because none of it was practical. I saw katas, hand conditioning and discovering my spiritual self as wastes of time. I wanted to learn PRACTICAL self-defense in real-world situations. After about six weeks I bagged it, when I refused to jog barefoot on a dirty sidewalk which had obstacles such as broken glass. Also, one of the veteran Korean kids got badly beaten by some a-hole at a gas station. If only there had been an instructor like Professor David back then, and a place like his in my neighborhood -- exactly what I wanted!
Judo is very effective in self-defense as countless actual situations were filmed and posted. Now granted, people who learn Judo have used mind games to sneak those throws and takedowns. But that’s the main principle in self-defense. We call it “verbal Judo”.
Our Sifu was just complaining to us that the kids these days cry in class. Really pisses her off. She is definitely old school. And yes, we feel the pain in her dojo. Love your content.

I love watching your teachings. However, I do have a question. I’m a 63 yr old gulf war veteran and am looking for a way of defending myself without a weapon. How can I practice these moves at home that would be effective?
i trained in ju jitsu in red hook brooklyn - we were in an old warehouse/factory building with the old 1 inch thick birch wooden floors - first thing we learned was how to fall and how to roll- we never used mats - shihan would say that “there’s no mats in the streets “ , so why train with them - love the old school ways of common sense
This guy is on point with everything he’s saying especially when he says today in martial arts people don’t want to be touched and the hold resentments if the lose in a sparring session.
Yep - enough training in 17 yrs - Taoist Tai Chi - wushu --- I am not "hardcore-external" soft style 108 movements - emphasis on health healing and rejuvenation --- the practice of movement - dance - tai chi and music - are adornments along the way...a foundation for other arts...I like your brass tacks - boots on the ground reality check approach --- I walk for miles - three to four times a week - life is integral - it seems - to the art of living..... Hey man great video! I studied taekwondo for a few years, the last studio was the best of the 3 different ones where I trained… people would actually get injured (occasionally) students had day gigs as bouncers at rough night clubs. I’m in my 60s and can still kick a headshot and do a jump kick, but I always knew this shit wouldn’t work in a real street situation. I saw you title for this video and the first thing I thought to my self was kick the knees and then head butt :) but fortunately I haven’t been in a physical confrontation since middle school. Thanks for doing what you do man. Good content. I still keep my training up here and 18:37 and the high kicks a great for coordination, but I would never try something like that in a real fight situation, and your best advice in this video is the notion that you should always talk your way out and defuse the situation first. I can also sprint pretty well too :) great content!
Thank you, your realilistic offensive/defense style is exactly what I was looking for! I'm 70+ yrs old, in the very beginning of traditional boxer training with a pro 2 times Golden Gloves boxer. I have the intent of using YOUR techniques, in combination with my current training to achieve my goals. Being old like you, I know I won't become a Profesional boxer but with these two forms of training, it will give me what I originally started out to do. TY very much for sharing your videos with me! I call it reality training and I appreciate your style, OLD timer!!! lol
Glad I found your channel again! I watched your videos years ago and never forgot about one of your basic rules- disrupt vision, breathing, and ballance. Fastest way to end a fight 👊🏻
The best form of self defense (besides being at one's best physically and on average - having the edge of speed and agility - alertness and response time due to the conditioning of continual practice over nearly 19 yrs...) The best defnse is to be quick enough to not be in reach where there is no chance of flight....I was attacked by two women and three or four men - an ambush --- this was in the first year ( I began with a broken back due to fall) --- taoist tai chi is/was the foundation of healthy living - self care and learning of Nourishment and wholeness and ways of encouraging the body holding more light and energy --- vitality....This is a very powerful"dicovery" - that those w/o a practice (even though it be swimming or the gym - of the western mindset) - as Confucius states : " Practice what you preach before Preaching what you Practice." - Thank you
Professor James ! Osu! As a native of the Bronx, who moved to Brooklyn, before relocating to NC -I can relate so well to all that was mentioned. A huge difference in todays Martial Artist vs the way it use to be ...I learned Kyokushin under the great Shihan Randolph James in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn . Growing up with around the true Legends, Professor Vee , Oliver Williams, Ronald Duncan, Moses Powell , and of course Professor David James . It is a very different environment and atmosphere of teaching. Outstanding video that all should take heed. Simple moves , strategies and techniques from the original source. I completely understand the 3 second subdue methods. Proud to watch this video . Osu!
It’s great to see old school survival techniques. Im not well trained but understand the concepts from growing up in the same battle ground. I’ve been blessed and lucky. To have made it through those days. Much love and respect ☯️
I came across this video and I have to say that what you said in the video I never thought about that and you're absolutely right. Thank you for taking the time to teach and spread knowledge, I appreciate you🙏🏾
This is what I love about David James. He only practices The First, the most. Bestest, and the winnests. In which means, Striking first with authority. Never let your opponent see it coming. The only other Sifu that I can think of making that statement was of course Paul Vunak. But according to these MMA guppies. They will beg to differ. Of course to them, all you need is good muay thai and wrestling. Heck! I'm still waiting for their outdated old 2010s comment. This won't work in the cage! And to those keyboard warrior types! Stop talking, and trying to explain what you would do differently. Cause all you doing is just eating your cheese puffs, and typing away

That was the best explanation of the difference between Martail Arts and Self Defense that has ever been shouted at me. lol. I LOVE the passion, truth and reality. Not enough of that in the self defense world. Just found your channel and I love it.
Agreed. Txs. Peace

been involved in the martial arts for 44 years, earned my Black Belt from a world champion, and also trained with a guy certified by Dan Inosanto to teach JKD. This guy is spot on with everything he is saying!
damn dude, the cameraman has a microphone, your loud voice induces migraines... bring it down a few decibels and people might watch you a lil more!
Your the best. I will surely survive the fight.
because I am here (In a new region of Canada - from prairie to Edmonton) --- I will see to it the inception of a community tai chi club to be brought about by participation in ushering in the positive future ...
I love this brother energy and he speaks “the truth” Todays martial artist is not the same as old school
I call it reality training and I appreciate your style, OLD timer!!! lol
Thank You For Being You!! When It Goes Down - It Ain’t No Joke!! Our Best Defense - Is Our Best Offense!!
Very passionate instructor, and he's got authority.
Glad I found your channel again! I watched your videos years ago and never forgot about one of your basic rules- disrupt vision, breathing, and ballance. Fastest way to end a fight 👊🏻
Awesome.
God bless you Prof Dave. Thanks for sharing your PD story as well as your skills. Keep that torch burning sir!
Bravo 👏 If you live it you get it, if you don’t you won’t survive! 👍
"I like!!"❤
Big distance between ART and Reality,,,,great class ,,,,Sir...
Thank you for taking the time to teach and spread knowledge, I appreciate you🙏🏾
Great video The truth
I have subscribed. Thank yiou ❤️
thank you for teaching reality street self defense
Ur awesome ty for sharing this with us an Merry Christmas
100 percent right. If u have had real fights. Aggressive action is the only thing that ever works.
I would like to say thank you for your broadcast I’m a 60+ year old, young senior, who enjoyed martial arts in my earlier years thank you
Love this channel, pure truth.
I like this guy. He is one of the few fighters whose videos are realistically grounded for actual, real life street fighting
WOW! I love this guy
Keep dropping those videos bro bro
This man is legit I'm from Brooklyn, 56 years old .I boxed took martial arts for years been a street fighter since I was a kid. But fighting and self defense are very different and the way he explains it is 💯 hope to visit your school when I'm back in NY. Much respect!!
