That is Alex's father. Despite how she came to him, despite her rebellious age... He loves her like a father, and whether she realizes it or not, she loves him.
I heard this is the ep that the writers/producers pointed out when negotiating an end date to the show; if ABC kept insisting they try to drag out Lost forever, they'll get episodes like this. They ended up agreeing to a total of 6 seasons, so soon the main plot starts moving quicker. Buckle up!
"What does it (the tattoos) mean then?" The Asian girl in the flashbacks told Jack what it means before putting it on Jack: "You're a leader, a great man but this makes you lonely, frightened and angry"
Damon Lindelof is on record for acknowledging that a huge conceit of the show is he fact that the characters can’t talk off camera and can’t ask all the questions a normal person would. It’s part of the DNA of the show.
@@JacopoBasanisi was there a concrete detail in the episode that undoubtfully puts these flashbacks after the divorce in Jack's timeline? I mean I know it makes the most sense but I don't remember any solid proof to that? Did we ever see Jack's bare tattoo arm in any of his previous flashbacks so that we can be sure if there was any tattoo during the marriage?
@@astragalusson Of course they don't give us the specific time, but it seems logic to me: Jack was railroading his life as a doctor-to-be, so a trip to Thailand is logically collocated either right after college or after the marriage. Given his weird attitude towards life in general in the flashback, and the focus on his suffering since episode one of the season, I guess that's it. Also, I would say, I know the episode wasn't great, but it makes sense to talk about something that put Jack on the path of the island, and not just some college oversea trip
Any of us following along can answer all your questions, but if we did, you wouldn't enjoy the show as much. Instead of getting frustrated with how slow the answers are coming, just try to enjoy the mysteries. You'll appreciate it more in the end.
I swear, if I EVER get a tattoo, I want Chinese symbols that say EXACTLY this. "He walks among us but he is not one of us". Perfectly describes weird me... 😅
The title is a direct quote from the King James version of the Bible, Exodus 2:22. It also happens to be the title of an award winning science fiction novel by Robert Heinlein from 1961. The novel is about a human raised on Mars. His parents were from a crewed spacecraft, the Envoy, that lost contact with Earth shortly before landing. Twenty-five years later, another spacecraft makes contact with Mars and discovers a single human survivor, a descendent from the original crew, named Valentine Michael Smith. He was born on the Envoy and raised entirely by Martians. He returns to Earth, where he slowly assimilates into society. He studies many aspects of human existence, including religion. The rest of the book goes into his progress, and his eventual starting of his own church based on the Martian principles he was raised under. This is in conflict to an existing megachurch. The story of this episode kind of parallels that of the book (kind of). To me, that is the only thing that the episode had going for it. Of all of the "Lost" episodes, it is the only one that I regularly skip on rewatches.
But isn't gringo Latin American Spanish for white folks or non Spanish-speaking person, i.e., America, Canadian, etc. But his tattoo is in Asian characters.
Great react! Can you watch Pride and Prejudice (2005)? Maybe for valentines day since it's a romance. The American version is best - it has a longer ending.
I haven't really understood all the hate for this episode. The island stuff is actually ok, the flashback is kind of meh, made worse in my opinion by Bai Ling (not a fan). But still a 6-7 rating episode in my opinion. Which in a season filled with 9s and 10s is low, but not total garbage.
It would be "decent" if it wasn't in Lost tbf but Lost episodes standards are through the roof. Overall i think they just completly failed whatever they were trying to do in the episode wich is very rare in the show.
It’s not a great episode but there is much worse. I think the season 2 episode Fire + Water is WAY worse. The tattoo thing is stupid but there’s some solid moments. The ending of the episode in particular is really good.
@@SurrealVerdoux I also consider fire+water to be worse than this one, probably the worst in the first 4 seasons. We don't talk about 5 and especially 6.
Agreed, this is a middling episode with a flashback so superfluous that the writers called themselves out on the pointlessness of an origin story for Jack's tattoo that no one cares about, but it's not nearly as frustrating as Fire + Water, where Charlie is trying his best, doesn't know what's happening, and is being punished for no reason. It breaks story structure and whatever character arc they were trying to do in favor of trying too hard to be weird and mysterious. Charlie doesn't even get a chance to explain what's happening to him, what he's seeing, he just gets character assassinated and no one cares to hear his side.

"Oh she's a tattoo artist!"
"I am NOT a tattoo artist" 😂

I would agree if it was a normal adoption, but I would never dignify a kidnapper by giving them the title of father.

"Sure you are, Bobby." The reference is to Bobby Brady, the youngest boy on The Brady Bunch.

Now you can be comforted knowing that every episode coming up is better than this one
There has been references to Aluce In Wonderland in Lost

Widely considered to be the worst episode. But I don't hate it.
I thought the on island stuff was ok.
2x 12 is the worst, the one with Charlie, in my opinion. This episode actually gave us some important information.

This is the WORST episode of the entire series.
