I may not live in NYC, but I am a firm believer in history, & preserving history. It's awesome to see all the granite stonework being preserved to it's former glory. I enjoy watching your videos! Keep up the good work!
Interesting video. ..love your channel. I'm a resident of Toronto Canada but used to spend days touring around the Five Boroughs checking out roads, bridges and subways. A bit of an infrastructure geek....nothing beats NYC in the cool factor! Keep up the good work!
Thank you for making this great video. It is so important that we preserve our history and people like you help to document those days gone by. I will probably never get to see this park, but please let us know when it opens and what happened to the fixtures. Thanks again
Nice work Joe. As a kid in the sixties, and from the other side of the river, we treated the HighBridge as our personal playground. Yes it was locked off but we got in the Joe way. Few people know the big masonry bridge pier is hollow, it was were the teens would drink beer. Kids could also explore the original aqueduct from inside it. Mostly the bridge was used for diving in the river. The daredevils jumped from the higher girders 3 or 4 on the arch.
I am a big fan of your vids and love how you show hidden gems and tell the history and purpose, I live in London which is ever changing and at what seems a faster pace these days. the same thing happens here history local history is swept away for souless mordern!!! i agree like you its a crime and a crying shame. preserve our great cities.
Nice job Joe. I'm all about re-furbishing antiques back to their original glory but to rip out an iconic light post and slam something back in that's made in China really is a crime. I hope they don't rape the park too much when re-furbishing it. It's good to see they are doing something though. I've never been to New York but if I go, I want Crazy New York Driver telling me which fences to jump over. Glad you didn't get pinched by the cops!
I was born in the Bronx in the 50's on University Avenue. After my neighbor was murdered on the street walking his dog at night by a black man we moved out of the Bronx. Many good memories of Highbridge area before it turned bad.
I lived on Ogden Avenue moved out 72 age 12 when I was on the bus going over 181st Bridge Always wondered what that was thought it was a bridge at one time Thanks for the video
I remember as a kid I was never allowed to go to the pool at high bridge park, and my mom was always cautious with me around 168th and fort Washington by presbyterian hospital because of the halfway house there.
I really enjoy your videos, these are great. Like you I hate when they rip out the original heritage of a site. Especially when it dates back as far as most of the New York and New Englands sites do. It would not take much more to clean up and re-use all those original fixtures. Here in America we tear our heritage down, what a shame...I love architecture, so New York and New England architecture is eye candy to me, love it! Thank You so much for sharing these!
hi. I believe the steel door leads to an entrance to the access area for the croton water transfer station. it is seldom used but back in the day drug addicts broke in and stole pipe and materials for scrap value. I would love to get in there and look around :-)
Pt. 345. I drive by the High Bridge via the Harlem River Drive quite often as I make my way to the GW Bridge and always wonder why stone wasn't used for the entire expanse of the bridge but the part of the bridge that spans the river, metal chosen for the center instead. Ten years post this video but, I'm hoping you're still doing this and know the answer.
I was taking photos in HB Park for my rock climbing app CLIMB NYC and went through those areas on my way back (had no idea where I was). There were needles EVERYWHERE. Super sketchy. I wouldn't recommend going around there. Stick to the high traffic areas only.
If the Parks Department was Savy, they'd only Upgrade the antique lighting to LCD. It's EASY to do, so there's no excuse not to. P.S. I'll bet some of those druggies Quit after seeing you with your books :o)
Video seems to end abruptly. Is there a second part. I will post a link to this vid on FB group I grew up in Washington Heights. Thanks for displaying your work.
I know about this park and know it like the back of my hand, I've been walking thru there since I was little and have seen it go thru it's changes, They have found bodies crackheads living down there it's crazy
The High Bridge Park it was the first one ever before the Brooklyn Bridge because I could tell you this that because the Highbridge been there like 1817 before that the Brooklyn Bridge was there so this is a history change right here
I know that this is going to be a difficult challenge here dead to try to save it and try to remove the older pain and put a brand new paint or some of them had to be restored lamp post and with a camera just in case a night getting darker and worse
Mania people wanted to trouble of a different destination that they never heard it before but they have some older pictures that are many crazy crazy people that take a picture. The last one to remember before it would destroy but sometimes that are it never was destroyed still there today but sometimes that are up and many people wanted to destroy forget about it it's not a historic but many people are going to want to bring it back or something like for the good of the natural Parkway for the development so now you know because everyone went to Trevor something very interested this is used to be before before after but however he was a very crazy person that it take this risk that they show us some pictures but in the near future that if I wanted to see somebody video it could be showing it right there especially that are sometimes that many people like take a picture was more interested instead of videos what is it that way anyway for everyone it doesn't matter that which one is it but matter is that to take a picture first video second and then after that for 20 or 30 years later this is used to be like before and after

@crazydriver: now that the bridge has been opened to the public perhaps you could do a follow up video to document the changes made since 2012. thx
Hope to get in there soon. I lived at 175th and Amterdam Ave in the 50s. Moved to LI in 63.
Love your spirit. Great exploration!

You should do a follow up video. I grew up on 172 & Amsterdam and was always afraid to go in that park in the 80's

Pt. 345. Never on schedule. Reopened in 2015, not 2013. They've got plenty of time and money to needlessly rename roads and bridges though.

It's a shame you couldn't lobby the city or contact someone to maybe even buy those artifacts to save them from the tear down...
Nice.
brilliant! thanks
And the dice at the walls
Does anyone know where that black metal door at the beginning is located?
I know that park with my eyes closed. I know every secret to that park . I found classic buried bottles in there. I grew up on 177 and audubon
Do you still live in New York? Even if you don't, I would really like to ask you some questions about the layout of the park back in the day.
What kinds of buried bottles?
