Would love to see a little exploration of the line near Old Route 6 at the Middle Branch Reservoir outside of Brewster. Lived there as a kid in 1971/72. We used to explore the tracks, and even saw a very slow moving train once. Looked like maybe maintenance or surveying.
Cool vid! I lived in Riverdale from 2005 to 2017, explored this park numerous times, including the Old Putnam remains! Would you consider doing an exploration video of the old Freedom Tunnel by the 125th Street elevated train archway?
These videos are pure gold. I’m a new subscriber to your channel for a few days now, and I’ve been watching these urban exploration videos on your channel. I’ve never been to New York, but I’d love to visit someday. I’ve always been very fascinated by the rich history of the state/city. Would you consider doing some historical videos about the history of the underground subway systems or the many tunnels under the city? That would be amazing, and I bet you’d get lots of hits on those videos. Keep up the great work, and thank you for the entertainment you provide.
Great video. That's the beginning of my favorite stretch of NY State. Follow it right up the Hudson river. Once again your videos reveal hidden places that have the last vestiges of an old magic.
Joe the box in your video. Is a control box for a semaphore. A train traffic signaling device. A railroad traffic light. Also the concrete markers are stations markers the name of the railroad station would be engraved or painted on them. Their found just before and after each railroad station for the train crew. Not sure about the structure with with door on it. If I was to guess maybe the base to an old railroad dispatch tower.
You know. They have to finish the rest of the bike trailer I'm surprised that the old vancortlant station is still up I'm glad that some body took a tour around where old. Putnam train
Great video Joe. The amount of history and historical sites in and around NYC is amazing. I'm a Upstate New Yorker who enjoys history but would never of seen these sites without your videos. I wouldn't know where to look and anytime I've been to NYC it's like a overwhelming mad house, Lol. Thanks Joe.
Back in 1996/97 me and my buddies walked this not knowing were this trail would take us and popped out in some neighborhood and eventually ended up on central ave in Yonkers. Should of been in school that day btw 🤪🤪
Hey I truly enjoy this video quick history I have been riding this path on my bike since I could rember. This is the old Putnam train line. If you ride it uo to Yonkers it would turn into black top at one point there a history of the line. The line ride along the Deagon Highway would link up to the rail line which run along the Hudson River. This train line I I am very familiar with it. I took a ride on bike all up towards Yonkers and pass it. Thanks again for showing this awesome piece of The Bronx History.
Hi Joe- Great history videos! We enjoy the videos & appreciate all the time & effort you put in this labor of Love! Years ago in my dads photo lab we did work for the Gravesend Historical Society. Gravesend is a section in Bensonhurst Brooklyn with cemeteries dating back to 1600’s. Not sure but it’s been said Pres George Washington came the area What a great place NY was and still is.
...I live in Amalgamated Housing....Van Cortlndt Park South....top of the city steps, cros from the Vannie Golf Course's 17th and 18th holes. I'll post this video to the FB group WEST 231st STREET MEMORIES. Someone had posted info. about the huge stones///testing for Grand Central Terminal....they'll know.
The ten stones ain't going nowhere where and the old Putnam vancortlant station and the trestle ain't going nowhere ether. As you walk on the trestle you will see some old train tracks ties. The old vancortlant park Putnam train station and trestle are there for a reason.
Something is a bout to happen. Nothing cannot replace the old Putnam Rail road trains anymore. That's the reason why they have the old Putnam vancortlant park Putnam train station. They are planning something big I tell you that now. They could have trial er all they want next thing they gonna have the trains run a long side of the trailer Putnam I'm telling you it's gonna be something like mayrook. No other Rail road lines cannot replace the old Putnam Rail road and that's is the Gospel truth. As you ride or joking you will see some old train tracks ties laying on the side as you ride to tibbits Brook park. They are starting to cut a lots of trees.
@@leecornwell1062 that would be nice if say for example they actually did revive the Putnam Line but I was at the park yesterday and I saw that they fixed up the trail there to make it look like a road in which u would see cars drive on it.
I lived in the Riverdale Section of the Bronx for three years, close to Van Cortland Park, and never explored the park. This was really interesting to me. Thanks
Great video, Joe! I love local history as well, especially long gone railroad tracks and towns. While researching old plat books for locations of gone country school houses, farms and churches (for my metal detecting hobby), on a 1908 map it shows a short 15 mile long rail line from my town to a SD town just across the border. It wasn't on the 1898 nor 1916 maps. So, using Google maps and my driving on gravel roads I located 5 elevated rail earthen berms. The line crossed two rivers and I saw the pilings in both. What I wanted was to get an idea of exactly where the tracks ran, why it was built and quickly abandoned. I did see a faint impression in some of the crop fields in satellite view but not enough for me to say voila! I looked at several online historical sites for my area but not one mentioned the rail! Still looking. There was another line from that SD town that also crossed the river into Iowa and ran a different direction. Speaking to a farmer, he said there are still rails on his farm, hidden by trees and weeds. About a mile farther was a siding with buildings, I believe it was for transferring grain to the train. I need to go see what I can see this Spring before the crop is in and the weeds come back. Fascinating stuff!
There's an abandoned rail line above groundnear 10 6th Street in Queens that runs all the way down from the rockaways to Forest hills it was a Long island railroad line in Forest Park you can actually gain gain access and walk the line
I thought you just like cars. I didn't know you like trains. This was a very informative video. And if you're interested, there's an abandoned railroad line in Queens called the Rockaway Line. There have been proposals to revive the line, but it's highly unlikely.
Hi Joe, great to see you doing exploration videos again. I last visited NY in 1990, and the only part of The Bronx I got to was the Zoo. I bet it's changed a lot since then ?
Hey Joe. I had the same problem this time with a canceled order and the auto relisting option. I believe that before this particle time, I canceled and refunded a sell of item. Then I blocked the careless buyer after the refund went through. The item in question did auto relisted. This last time I blocked then waited to give the refund. I choose the auto relist option. Like you said in one of your videos, the auto relist didn't work. Try refund and auto relist, then block the fitchey buyer after the buyer goes through. Thank you for your videos. Keep you the great work.
There is still signs of the old railroad you just need a mountain bike to explore more better “ you will come across the railroad 🛤 tracks I know that place like the back of my hand off-road dirtbike‘s in there 😉
I remember an unused train station along side of Van Cortlandt Park Lake. It was north of the Bailey Avenue entrance to the park. Is that the skeleton station in this video? I remember railroad tracks along side of the Major Deegan Expressway, between Broadway and Bailey Avenue, north of West 230th Street, that linked to nothing. They were in line with the Putnam tracks, a few blocks to the south of the park. I was fascinated by the Van Cortlandt family cemetery in the woods, NE of the ball fields, when I was a child. I remember pony rides around a track, for small children, at the stables. I remember ice skating on the lake. Van Cortlandt Park Lake is the southernmost aboveground remnant of Tibbets Brook. There's an excellent article about Tibbet's Brook on Wikipedia.
No you will not be mugged. Something is coming back . Even though they are making a pave bike trailer I have a spiritual feeling that they are going to put a train along side of the trailer and alots of people are definitely picking up on the Putnam trains back in 1958. and the last fraigt trains ran in 1982 or 1984. They are planning something. Their a reason that the trestle and vancortlant station is still up a ten stones.
These videos are great! Hoping you’ll make some more in the near future!

Grand Central Terminal testing stones perfect nameless legacy of both historic railroad and cemetery
Loved the history!! Thanks for posting this

Fantastic video!! I grew up in westchester, never knew about these cool locations!
Thanks for the railroad history video.

Hey, another sunny day! Thanks for the interesting video!
That Iron Pole at 7:42 looks like a rail stuck in the ground
..... and the holes are probably for the connecting fish plates.

I lived at 238th and Kingsbridge Ave. I never knew about those test stones . If I'm ever back in NYC I will check this out . Thanks

Love it. I trtain there and I am a history nerd and i didnt know this. will check it out for myself next time.
Wasn't that park used in The Warriors movie?
Yes, also Riverside Park as well was used in "The Warriors"
So cool Joe
I loved your West Side Highway video from way back. Do you have any more scrapbooks to scan?
I am sure I do, I just need to find the time
I lived in the Riverdale Section of the Bronx for three years, close to Van Cortland Park, and never explored the park. This was really interesting to me. Thanks

I’ve never been there before, but we drove pass this park on the Henry Hudson Parkway.

If you continue north, it's now called south county trailway for cyclist. It extend 11.6 miles north & meet up with north county trailway.
Thank you, Joe for very informative journey into the yankee's paradise:-) "There is a lot of history buried here."... and people.
He's on a roll.........................
Imagine a ghost passenger train of the 50s haunting this former line
Hi Joe, great to see you doing exploration videos again. I last visited NY in 1990, and the only part of The Bronx I got to was the Zoo. I bet it's changed a lot since then ?
Grew up on that line, ran an RS3 to Eastview. Modeled the entire line in N scale at one time.
