This line is a metaphor for the mother’s relentless effort and self-sacrifice, potentially reflecting her intense labour and sense of responsibility like a burning desire. The mother’s act of scattering "red coals" evokes physical pain, symbolising her emotional anguish as she examines her own actions and decisions to understand where she might have "fallen short" or contributed to perceived failures in her children’s lives. Would this interpretation add up to the understanding of the poem?
