Cortina d'Ampezzo is an Italian town of about 5,600 inhabitants in the province of Belluno in Veneto, located in the historical-geographical region of Ladinia.
A well-known winter and summer tourist resort, as well as the scene of numerous sporting events of international importance related to the mountains and winter sports, it was the scene of the 1956 Winter Olympics and the 2021 Alpine Ski World Championships and will host, together with Milan, the Winter Olympics in 2026.
The capital and locality from which the municipality takes its name, Cortina, is located in the center of the Conca d'Ampezzo, in the upper Boite Valley, which was the terminal basin of an ancient Quaternary glacier, and is located between the Cadore (to the south) and the Val Pusteria (to the north), the Val d'Ansiei (to the east) and the Alto Agordino (to the west). With its 252.81 km², Cortina d'Ampezzo is the third largest municipality in Veneto (after the capital Venice and Porto Tolle in the province of Rovigo).
The geological formations present within the regional natural park of the Ampezzo Dolomites are of clear sedimentary origin, dating back to a period between the Middle Triassic (230 million years ago) and the Upper Cretaceous (90 million years ago) of the Mesozoic era, consisting mainly of rocks such as dolomite and limestone.
The Ampezzo motto, written in capital letters on a golden ribbon placed under the municipal coat of arms, reads: "I live sparingly and rest peacefully".
The minor basilica of Saints Philip and James, dedicated to the apostles Philip and James, patrons of the town, is the seat of the parish and deanery of Cortina d'Ampezzo. Built between 1769 and 1775 on the site where two previous churches of the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries had risen, it is the pride of the community.
The international fame of the Ampezzo town is also due to its ski slopes, among the most challenging and scenic in all the Dolomites: the tourist symbol of Cortina d'Ampezzo is the logo depicting a small red squirrel, next to the cursive inscription the name of the municipality.
