“Though we’re rarely conscious of it, we continually evaluate ourselves-and are convinced that something is wrong with us.” How can we live with a greater expression of our aliveness, creativity, and love? In this session, Tara takes us through a process for waking up from this trance, so we can let go of constant self-improvement and actually live to our potential. Join her as she examines:
    - The factors that create the trance of unworthiness
    - The four-step RAIN process: Recognizing what’s going on, Allowing all our thoughts and feelings, Investigating with kindness, and practicing Non-identification
    - Developing a trust in our own essential goodness
Sounds True was founded in 1985 by Tami Simon with a clear mission: to disseminate spiritual wisdom. Since starting out as a project with one woman and her tape recorder, we have grown into a multimedia publishing company with more than 80 employees, a library of more than 1500 titles featuring some of the leading teachers and visionaries of our time, and an ever-expanding family of customers from across the world. In more than three decades of growth, change, and evolution, Sounds True has maintained its focus on its overriding purpose, as summed up in our Mission Statement.

It’s no revelation that we all feel unworthy. I spent a lot of time listening to people tell me “how to stop feeling unworthy”. Gabor Maté is the first person I listened to who actually made me understand “how it happened in the first place”-that it came from childhood trauma. The human condition is essentially the result of childhood trauma. And aside from the more obvious & awful things that traumatize children, simple things do too. As children, we obediently bury our authenticity-our true selves-in many ways, in favor of love & approval. So, inevitably we grow up feeling less than, incomplete. And unless you approach your healing from that point, you could end up spinning your wheels like I did. Remember: nothing is missing in you. Whatever you think is missing, it’s right where you left it.

Yes well said. I LOVE Gabor Mate and his work. I have been on this journey of self discovery, self forgiveness , change in order to heal my body and my life. Like louise hays book. You can heal your life...its all about self love. Self love is the foundation to all.

Dr. Gabor Matè made the correlation that children left unattended, bereft of a loving environment have almost 100% propensity chances to have post trauma disorders.
Many go on to have compulsive addictive behavior. The lack of engaged contact or a sense of belonging underscored by a disregard for one's child is a recipe for that child to grow without a sense of security, lacks awareness of boundaries and does not employ a compass of relationship to inner self or outer self. This promotes a personality feeling unworthy and in fight or flight anxiety.
These parent(s) were ill equipped to raise children let alone understand that nurturing a baby during the important first few years initiates a child's self-actualization process of themself and of their world.
Your life work is changing lives by living your truth. ♡

The way Tara speaks about self, self - hatred and shame. She has the insight that all our minds are searching for. Sat through this and made me realise that I am my own worst enemy and when you're trapped in your mind, your own body often will amplify the negativity based on pre-existing notions that you're less than, often due to trauma and external factors that were never your fault, or within your control.

Being with unpleasant feelings helped me to get in touch with the part that I didn’t feel/touch for a long time cuz we kept moving on/ignoring that part……somehow when I decided not to let go that unpleasant feeling, it felt like I was hugging that “part” of me also. It is like reintegrating a part of myself into a more whole being.

Thank you so much for sharing this conversation with us all. A great antidote to the all pervasive notion of 'not good enough', which is relentlessly promoted by the society we live in, and in particular by the advertisers who try to dictate how we 'should' be. You're right, Tara, if we were happy within ourselves the economy would not only crash, it would be obsolete! (incidentally, the word 'economy' means 'making the most out of the least', exactly the opposite of how it's generally being perceived!)

Wow, yes. The answer is in the feeling of , for example , love. Spend more time experiencing the love you have , like in the example of the mom, for your child. You can say for sure you know you love your daughter . So start there, where you are certain you can trust yourself . Then try and “(re)act , make decisions, respond, from there and expand to other areas. I think we spend all our time overthink and reexperiencing the uncertain, painful, experiences and memories than the feelings we enjoy, moments of comfort. It sort of makes sense, like duh of course I’m negative etc what do o expect I spent must of my life dwelling there. I actually don’t have much experience with joyful good memories and periods of strengths and Behaviors I’m really proud of. So yes, it’s true. Whoever commented by asking” do you do esteem able acts” I really really deeply get that line now . I want to like myself more so I should try spending more time with myself in those moments as oppose to others

Recently, I've thought of the idea of praying for answers, praying to the holy spirit to come thought me, praying for healing of my stuckness. I am creativity and capable of helping others- i have run into this thought of who can i ask for help since a child. I never knew where to go. I used to read books to help. Now, i call on a higher power, something within- to guide me. I'm not my truest self- i have been covered by experience. My mother was my best friend, i helped her and she helped me. I feel unsure without her, unguided. And yet, I grew up being her guide all along.

I want to ask her about people on the spectrum. Our sense of unworthiness comes from the perception of neurotypicals thinking we are unworthy and making us feel this way our whole lives (discriminating against us and deeming us unlovable, not giving us the same benefit of doubt or opportunities as they give others). Even when we believe in ourselves, society fights against us constantly.

My life is fear based which was triggered from a long-lived trauma. I am isolated but I want to be connected. I’m 62 with RA, lived a very active life until 2012. Now what do I Do? How can I become connected with like-minded people again? I try to be consistent with exercise but going to a gym does not give me life altering experiences with people. I could be more connected with others but the opportunities I have become involved in have not manifested. What could I be seeking for? I’m kind & full of love. People are separated & not willing to become more involved with each other.....

SuzieQ Wonder I hear you. I worry about the disconnect I see in our culture. I wish for you the love and connection you deserve. You are worthy.

Love hearing this, but also wrestling with the paradox of being true to self vs. attaining and maintaining security. These needs rarely align. Achieving the latter requires energy, belief, and motivation - often only sustained by sublimation or even a kind of annihilation of the “true self.” This is especially so for those less powerful. I am watching my young adult daughters go through this now. Preserving the true inner self while establishing the public self in a competitive world is a wrenching task for the young psyche. There is no guidebook or college course. Only when we reach our senior years do we get a full view of the casualties. The accounting can be soul wrenching. I believe it would help if there were honored rituals for this reckoning. If those inevitable sacrifices of self were valued.
