An important point, though - they often are capable of being exceedingly manipulative, when they need to be. Not the same as socially adept, of course, but don't underestimate them.
I worked for a company with a CEO much like Elon. Engineers got paid for 40 hours and expected to work 50+. When my son was 3, I was at work every day for 50 weeks. Only 2-3 hours on Saturdays and Sundays, but I had to be there. Foreign workers are not necessarily smarter, but more desperate. They will work longer hours for less pay to live in America. It is exploitation.
I work in IT, saw plenty of H1B workers, the lot of which typically paid someone to take their certification tests for them and boy, did it show in the lack of skills and quality. But, the incompetent work for cheap and that justifies that VP's purpose until the golden parachute opens onto a new company to infest. Meanwhile, I trained whoever wanted to learn. Rarely did I find someone who couldn't be trained, although some might take more effort and few could figure out a resultant set of policy in a complex environment in their head. Yeah, I'm *that* guy. Simple enough, RegEx hierarchical flow chart in the head for each element and subelements, in their designed priority order. But, immigrants that bought certifications and have no experience are better, because I might watch a television at night or something. Or now, twice to three times the age of that H1B worker, again, with experience that matters little to the money grabbing suite. Enjoy those Friday afternoon patches, folks! I'll be buying your office equipment for pennies on the thousand dollar mark, because I'm feeling generous.

I am not in tech, but in both manufacturing and design I’ve had to work with people overseas who are not qualified. I am an SME and I am not a manager, but I have to check these people’s work and train them. These are almost always private equity, or multinational publicly traded companies. But they will hire 1 American to every 10-40 overseas person. But they don’t advertise this. But you can see it in the quality. Idc what the company is - they are doing this if they can. And if they aren’t they have a vendor that is. Agree that H1B is a scam to control people and pay them less. But there are other scams too - what I am describing is one of them. Have a high skilled worker QC overseas work and the customer/client never knows.
A very big shipyard expects the same from their engineers...who cannot unionize, though IT and ship builders are union. Engineers are RARELY publicly thanked, too. They also cannot make overtime until they hit 53 hours.

I am in transportation and guess what? Over the past 10 years with the development of online/telecommute technologies, I have seen a lot of more service work go outside the US. Import/Export documentation is being done in Brazil and Peru where we can pay an agency the equivalent of minimum wage and avoid all insurance expenses, yet get college grads that can read and navigate technical regulations. It started with call centers, and they spent the money we sent to educate their children, and now even our service jobs are being exported - but these don't get tariffs because there is no commodity. I can guarantee you this will not get better over the next 10 years.

As a former elementary teacher, I am so angry with the ultra rich telling us that Americans are dumb. Every teacher will have their horror stories about budget cuts. I remember one principal I worked under said that we teachers might have to buy our own copy paper. And why did we have to put out parent letters asking for donations of pencils, glue sticks, tissue, and various other supplies? And of course, classroom help was extremely limited. We were told that if a low achieving student didn’t qualify for special education, put the ADHD, or nominally capable students near a higher achieving student so he or she could help that student. You can imagine how many parents of the highly capable students vetoed that idea because they didn’t want their child interrupted by the student in need? Our specialists were often split between two or three schools, and their caseloads unmanageable. When U.S. classrooms aren’t adequately funded, those in the trenches get scraps, while administrators make big salaries, when some children come to school hungry or from very dysfunctional homes, and American schools have been designated as the depository for the mixed, vulnerable populations that we receive, then the answer isn’t importing the brain power from other places but to enrich and enhance our educational system. But liberals have been screaming about this for years and of course instead of revamping American education, they will do away with the Department of Education. Conservatives have been aiding in the dummying down of Americans and they have been quite successful. Look who was just elected? The guy that probably paid someone in college to take his tests.

We could have engaged in a great more hours of education if we didn’t have to be surrogate parents, social workers, bought supplies when school dollars didn’t stretch far enough ( shopping after school for necessities) or NOT having to practice intruder drills for fear of a shooter. Crazy parents have threatened teachers ( I was one grabbed very hard by an unbalanced mother just because her son’s desk was a mess), my teacher friend had a student leave for recess and the child collapsed and died ( her parents were of the religious belief God would take care of her but failed to tell the school she had a heart condition, and the other students were traumatized for weeks afterwards. Three of my students ( in ten years time) had a parent die during their school year, one parent a suicide. I had psychotic kids throw chairs across the room or attack other students. I had many latchkey kids whose mom worked two jobs because dad took off, and in one of my second grade classes, eight out of twenty-four second graders had been physically or sexually abused. My district wasn’t even particularly poor, but there were low income apartments . Our administration was paid handsomely, but during my tenure the state demanded we get a masters degree. That costs a lot of money and no assistance from the district or state. What I remember very vividly, were the times when I did have a parent helper, and they admitted that they couldn’t have “ done this job”. Why do you think that one benefit of the COVID pandemic and instruction from home was the fact that teachers didn’t have to deal with disruptive students? And plenty of parents were moaning the fact that they had to monitor their own kids? What I do regret is that schools have become the repository for so many when parents expect schools to do the jobs of an educational staff when the real issue is that many of these dysfunctional parents should never have had children. Look at those kids who have taken weapons to school and created death and chaos. Whose fault is that? I cannot blame religious schools for opening and trying their best to protect children, but these schools have not been immune either from violence.

Maybe mention school shootings, poor pay for educators, the conservative attacks on books, teachers and curriculum, the massive education cutbacks (since Reagan), the conservatives' concerted efforts to tell the American people that higher education is worthless, the lack of funding or scholarships to encourage higher education, the crumbling school buildings, the buildings' lack of heat and/or AC in our changing climate, and the drops in standards for both teachers and curriculum because of the scarcity of teachers. Then maybe point out that the incoming administration plans to take away programs like Head Start, help for physically or mentally challenged students, subsidized breakfast and lunch programs, and the department of education as a whole-- privatizing all schooling while ignoring the fact that private schools can decline to accept any child for any reason. Finally, just to finish off, point out how much other countries spend on education -- as a significant slice of their fiscal buget, or even per capita! Frankly, it's alarming how little the US invests in education, or even in the welfare of their children in general.

As a programmer, I worked my 40 hours plus deployment hours. H1B programmers were expected to work more hours and with less benefits. They are treated as high paid indentured servants. It is disgusting.

I am a private tutor and work on college prep quite a bit. All the families willing to pay me my asking rate and treat me with respect come from Asia. The Caucasian parents who have talked to me wanted to pay me $15 an hour for college prep and often lectured me about how I should do my job in our initial interview, so I never took on those students. The American lack of respect for education has increasingly produced a society that embraces arrogant, willful ignorance, an attitude that allows other societies to move past America in so many ways.
100% The lack of respect for someone who spent years to become an expert in a field, and the unwillingness to compensate for knowledge & expertise has been growing steadily since the right started attacking education decades ago. My colleagues who teach overseas don't have to put up the this attitude, and both kids and parents are grateful for the helping hand that will open doors for those kids, improving prospects for their future. Many in America seem not to value either education or educators, and therefore what seems fair to pay is diminished.
I tried to work with a community group to provide tutoring. I wanted to hire college students to tutor the elementary school children. They wanted to pay the students to come and for the college students to volunteer. We parted ways. The program failed.

They probably saw Trump and Musk hamming down on the rally stage, and that was good enough because they have work and other things to think about. Can you blame them? I totally understand that if you have a long commute, maybe two jobs, a household and children to take care off that you have only energy left to watch sitcoms. I am Dutch but I have lived and worked in a small town in Iowa for about 3.5 years. There was not much to do there outside work. Especially not during college breaks. Television was mainly local news, sitcoms and sometimes a game. When I went to a bar with colleagues, most of the time there was a big screen TV. I did manage to find a volleyball team and we occasionally played in a tournament in DesMoines and did read a lot, but that was it. I can also imagine since the communities are so small you want to keep up-to-date with the popular sitcoms and some games because those are the topics on the neighbourhood barbecue.

I'm wondering how the heck Ramaswamy got as far as he has, climbing that slimy ladder to become a squirmy little magat in magaworld. Most of my older white neighbors are 100% maga (one is even a sovcit, but that's another nightmare). None of them like Rabbit-swarmy, and you know why. They don't even hide it! One elderly lady here said "You can't trust those darkies!" This is why I live like a hermit, out on 20 acres of mountain wilderness. Most of our community up here live in a neighborhood about 5 miles away, but if you count everyone in about 7 sq. miles, there's only about 300 of us. Where I am, my closest neighbor is 2 miles away. I retired from a power company. Very high skill stem trades and professions are necessary to run them. About half of us were native born, from all over the country. The other half were foreign born. The truth is we simply by the numbers do not have enough people with the skill set or the intelligence to learn them. The US has been booming and the demand for skill workers has outstretch the the resource nationally. I learn in psychology class years ago that only about 15% of the population can learn or do technical professional jobs. Those workers spend and create demand for jobs most of the population can do and wants. A win win. If we cannot import workers for most companies the job will go to where the company can hire them. A lost. Got a feeling the business world will resist Trump's mass deportation scheme.

I've never liked that viewpoint. People vote for a given candidate for any number of reasons, but rarely do voters agree with everything that candidate says he stands for. I have actually had employees that were completely untrainable. It is a major problem in the country. Get out from behind your deck and take a look around at what goes on in the world. Schools don't teach kids how to do anything to do with manual labor anymore.

Well yeah, the base said that they should build the schools while standing in a country that has schools everywhere. I worked for a company with a CEO much like Elon. Engineers got paid for 40 hours and expected to work 50+. When my son was 3, I was at work every day for 50 weeks. Only 2-3 hours on Saturdays and Sundays, but I had to be there. Foreign workers are not necessarily smarter, but more desperate. They will work longer hours for less pay to live in America. It is exploitation.
I work in IT, saw plenty of H1B workers, the lot of which typically paid someone to take their certification tests for them and boy, did it show in the lack of skills and quality.
But, the incompetent work for cheap and that justifies that VP's purpose until the golden parachute opens onto a new company to infest.
Meanwhile, I trained whoever wanted to learn. Rarely did I find someone who couldn't be trained, although some might take more effort and few could figure out a resultant set of policy in a complex environment in their head. Yeah, I'm *that* guy.
Simple enough, RegEx hierarchical flow chart in the head for each element and subelements, in their designed priority order.
But, immigrants that bought certifications and have no experience are better, because I might watch a television at night or something. Or now, twice to three times the age of that H1B worker, again, with experience that matters little to the money grabbing suite.

I am not in tech, but in both manufacturing and design I’ve had to work with people overseas who are not qualified. I am an SME and I am not a manager, but I have to check these people’s work and train them. These are almost always private equity, or multinational publicly traded companies. But they will hire 1 American to every 10-40 overseas person. But they don’t advertise this. But you can see it in the quality. Idc what the company is - they are doing this if they can. And if they aren’t they have a vendor that is.
Agree that H1B is a scam to control people and pay them less. But there are other scams too - what I am describing is one of them. Have a high skilled worker QC overseas work and the customer/client never knows.
A very big shipyard expects the same from their engineers...who cannot unionize, though IT and ship builders are union. Engineers are RARELY publicly thanked, too. They also cannot make overtime until they hit 53 hours.

I am in transportation and guess what? Over the past 10 years with the development of online/telecommute technologies, I have seen a lot of more service work go outside the US. Import/Export documentation is being done in Brazil and Peru where we can pay an agency the equivalent of minimum wage and avoid all insurance expenses, yet get college grads that can read and navigate technical regulations. It started with call centers, and they spent the money we sent to educate their children, and now even our service jobs are being exported - but these don't get tariffs because there is no commodity. I can guarantee you this will not get better over the next 10 years.

As a former elementary teacher, I am so angry with the ultra rich telling us that Americans are dumb. Every teacher will have their horror stories about budget cuts. I remember one principal I worked under said that we teachers might have to buy our own copy paper. And why did we have to put out parent letters asking for donations of pencils, glue sticks, tissue, and various other supplies? And of course, classroom help was extremely limited. We were told that if a low achieving student didn’t qualify for special education, put the ADHD, or nominally capable students near a higher achieving student so he or she could help that student. You can imagine how many parents of the highly capable students vetoed that idea because they didn’t want their child interrupted by the student in need? Our specialists were often split between two or three schools, and their caseloads unmanageable. When U.S. classrooms aren’t adequately funded, those in the trenches get scraps, while administrators make big salaries, when some children come to school hungry or from very dysfunctional homes, and American schools have been designated as the depository for the mixed, vulnerable populations that we receive, then the answer isn’t importing the brain power from other places but to enrich and enhance our educational system. But liberals have been screaming about this for years and of course instead of revamping American education, they will do away with the Department of Education. Conservatives have been aiding in the dummying down of Americans and they have been quite successful. Look who was just elected? The guy that probably paid someone in college to take his tests.

We could have engaged in a great more hours of education if we didn’t have to be surrogate parents, social workers, bought supplies when school dollars didn’t stretch far enough ( shopping after school for necessities) or NOT having to practice intruder drills for fear of a shooter. Crazy parents have threatened teachers ( I was one grabbed very hard by an unbalanced mother just because her son’s desk was a mess), my teacher friend had a student leave for recess and the child collapsed and died ( her parents were of the religious belief God would take care of her but failed to tell the school she had a heart condition, and the other students were traumatized for weeks afterwards. Three of my students ( in ten years time) had a parent die during their school year, one parent a suicide. I had psychotic kids throw chairs across the room or attack other students. I had many latchkey kids whose mom worked two jobs because dad took off, and in one of my second grade classes, eight out of twenty-four second graders had been physically or sexually abused. My district wasn’t even particularly poor, but there were low income apartments . Our administration was paid handsomely, but during my tenure the state demanded we get a masters degree. That costs a lot of money and no assistance from the district or state.
What I remember very vividly, were the times when I did have a parent helper, and they admitted that they couldn’t have “ done this job”. Why do you think that one benefit of the COVID pandemic and instruction from home was the fact that teachers didn’t have to deal with disruptive students? And plenty of parents were moaning the fact that they had to monitor their own kids? What I do regret is that schools have become the repository for so many when parents expect schools to do the jobs of an educational staff when the real issue is that many of these dysfunctional parents should never have had children. Look at those kids who have taken weapons to school and created death and chaos. Whose fault is that? I cannot blame religious schools for opening and trying their best to protect children, but these schools have not been immune either from violence.

Maybe mention school shootings, poor pay for educators, the conservative attacks on books, teachers and curriculum, the massive education cutbacks (since Reagan), the conservatives' concerted efforts to tell the American people that higher education is worthless, the lack of funding or scholarships to encourage higher education, the crumbling school buildings, the buildings' lack of heat and/or AC in our changing climate, and the drops in standards for both teachers and curriculum because of the scarcity of teachers.
Then maybe point out that the incoming administration plans to take away programs like Head Start, help for physically or mentally challenged students, subsidized breakfast and lunch programs, and the department of education as a whole-- privatizing all schooling while ignoring the fact that private schools can decline to accept any child for any reason.
Finally, just to finish off, point out how much other countries spend on education -- as a significant slice of their fiscal buget, or even per capita! Frankly, it's alarming how little the US invests in education, or even in the welfare of their children in general.

I am a private tutor and work on college prep quite a bit. All the families willing to pay me my asking rate and treat me with respect come from Asia. The Caucasian parents who have talked to me wanted to pay me $15 an hour for college prep and often lectured me about how I should do my job in our initial interview, so I never took on those students. The American lack of respect for education has increasingly produced a society that embraces arrogant, willful ignorance, an attitude that allows other societies to move past America in so many ways.

100% The lack of respect for someone who spent years to become an expert in a field, and the unwillingness to compensate for knowledge & expertise has been growing steadily since the right started attacking education decades ago. My colleagues who teach overseas don't have to put up the this attitude, and both kids and parents are grateful for the helping hand that will open doors for those kids, improving prospects for their future. Many in America seem not to value either education or educators, and therefore what seems fair to pay is diminished.
As an European I note the constant snide remarks about education and being smart and knowledgeable in US movies and TV shows.

I tried to work with a community group to provide tutoring. I wanted to hire college students to tutor the elementary school children. They wanted to pay the students to come and for the college students to volunteer. We parted ways. The program failed.

I am Dutch but I have lived and worked in a small town in Iowa for about 3.5 years. There was not much to do there outside work. Especially not during college breaks. Television was mainly local news, sitcoms and sometimes a game. When I went to a bar with colleagues, most of the time there was a big screen TV. I did manage to find a volleyball team and we occasionally played in a tournament in DesMoines and did read a lot, but that was it.
I can also imagine since the communities are so small you want to keep up-to-date with the popular sitcoms and some games because those are the topics on the neighbourhood barbecue.

As if they go out of their way to stay blind to it all. I get that after a day of being with your toxic boss, a long commute, underpaid, overworked, and worn out that there's very little energy left. Yet how else to get out of that prison if you don't pay attention to what caused that problem in the first place? I'm American. I'm beyond tired. Gen X. And I educate myself as much as I can with the energy I have, so that I can be a sliver of the solution.

I retired from a power company. Very high skill stem trades and professions are necessary to run them. About half of us were native born, from all over the country. The other half were foreign born. The truth is we simply by the numbers do not have enough people with the skill set or the intelligence to learn them. The US has been booming and the demand for skill workers has outstretch the the resource nationally. I learn in psychology class years ago that only about 15% of the population can learn or do technical professional jobs. Those workers spend and create demand for jobs most of the population can do and wants. A win win. If we cannot import workers for most companies the job will go to where the company can hire them. A lost. Got a feeling the business world will resist Trump's mass deportation scheme.
There were over 1000 openings which were offering over 500k just in Data related roles in 2024. The demand is gonna grow rapidly before 2028. Open AI was offering 900k.
