  • Rachel Riley has been the resident mathematician on game show Countdown for 10 years now, but that's not just what she came on our podcast to talk about.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
She's here to do her first serious interview on why she thinks antisemitism in the UK needs to be tackled, the online abuse she's received since speaking up about it and why she thinks more people need to call it out.

Being anti-Israel and anti-semitic isn't the same thing. Only 3 types of people pretend the Israeli government is the same thing as Judaism.
    1. People that want to target innocent Jews.
    2. People that want to protect the actions of the Israeli government.
    3. Ignorant people that attach Jewish identity to a specific nation regardless of the government.
Don't think Rachel Riley is a particularly evil person so I'd say she falls into the third category.

Look liberals pick and choose who they go after, Israel is probably the second most powerful military force on earth they got that way despite liberals always trying to weaken them. Liberals love a weak Israel way more than a strong one; The people who loves Israel are hyper vigilant because yes they are prospering and powerful for now but if they give into liberals way they want Israel to be then Israel will become another Islamic republic that's not even remotely cool.. What is worrying about this interview is that Rachel is a Mathematician who one assumes applies logic to any debate or discussion. However, she seems to have thrown logic and ethics from her arguments over antisemitism. I would suggest to Rachel to read comparative history politics and ethics, before she makes any sweeping statements about Israel and anti-Semitism. I would suggest, she spends time undertaking comparative readings and have an open mind rather than projecting her own world view onto text. What is also more worrying is she is saying anyone who is critical of zionism and Israel is racist or anti-jew. Yet, at the same time she said people should read, but distances herself from Israeli History and Politics, and does not want to get involved in understanding politics. That is like saying if I criticise USA or Iran, then I must hate Americans or Iranians, which is illogical. Zionism is a political theory, not a religious theory. It was established as a political organisation in 1897 under Theodor Herzl, and was later led by Chaim Weizmann. She should also talk to practicing Hasidic Jews from among the diaspora, who believe that until the Messiah Jesus returns they won't recognise the secular state of Israel. She should also read THE ETHNIC CLEANSING OF PALESTINE by ILAN PAPPE This major book by the renowned Israeli historian, unveils the hidden and systematic ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians in 1948, and its relevance to resolving the conflict.

If people in democratic countries are afraid to leave their homes looking Jewish because of a political issue in Israel, you’re deluding yourself into thinking that this isn’t developing similarly to the past.

But that doesn't give her the right to smear Corbyn as an antisemite without solid evidence to back up such an allegation. Just because some Jews "feel" he's antisemitic, that doesn't make him an antisemite. He's never made any antisemitic or insulting remarks about Jews in his life. Being harshly critical of Israel does not make one an antisemite. He's not calling for Jews to be attacked or Israel to be destroyed, but he is rightfully calling-out Israel for the racist apartheid state that it is, just as he did against South Africa in the '80s.

Why is she calling anyone who doesn't go along with her, not always but very often misunderstood views, an extremist? I would never call all who don't support me an extremist. She's proven in this very interview she's accepted many dodgy accounts of events and seems to struggle to have a basic understanding of many of the issues she's trying to take the lead on. People are now being proven right to have taken a sceptical view of all she's been saying. If she really is doing all this purely to eradicate antisemitism then she has my support, but I suggest she stops tweeting for a while while she really gets to grips with what she's trying to talk about. She needs to thoroughly check from whom and where she's getting her facts, because at the moment it seems to me she's been stirred up by daily mail type story's and led astray by some questionable people online. She conflates issues and as we've seem lately, if she doesn't get support she labels more and more people as antisemitic. She says she's not political but I find that hard to believe when she's souly focused on Labour and no one else....What's her end game? Why mention Corbyn so much when, as Kristian says, he stands with undesirable people as an attempt to gain peace and move forward. This is not some quick cover story, it's been documented his whole life. Why no uproar with May meeting, shaking hands and doing weapons deals with Saudi Arabia's leader whose 100% linked to dismembering of people, torture and using our own weapons to kill civilians. She's jumped in at the deep end attempting to lecture people without spending the years becoming more savvy. It'd be OK if this was just a case of her embarrassing herself but unfortunately it's got far more serious now as she's used her celebrity to smear and tarnish great people. Far from helping the issue I fear she's in real danger of doing damage to the cause.

    - The people that desperately want to out her as a "Blairite shill" or something along those lines are first of all generally massively reaching to try and find that conclusion.
    - All of this clearly isn't some sort of attempt to divert from Israel, an idea which really is anti-semitic in of itself and Rachel hasn't show any evidence of having a big interest in, besides basic amounts of Zionism.
    - All in all, does Labour have some form of an issue with anti-semitism? Yeah, but is largely overstated by those who are exposing it.

Here's the thing. I don't doubt Rachel Riley's education, but her choice of job for the past 10 years has been to be a gameshow host/assistant with math skills. She has also clearly been, at least in part, selected for that job because she's beautiful.
On the other hand, from her own testimony she appears to be a professional activist for girls in math, women, equality and now she has connected with her inner jew and combats anti-semitism.
All of this is great but it has nothing to do with being a mathematician and nor is it in any way a standard path for a mathematician. And yet THAT is what she presents herself as. I find that to be extremely deceptive. She is not representative in any way of mathematicians and in fact quite critical of the very notion. On the other hand she has a job that has little to do with being a mathematician (and in fact that side of her is overqualified for the mathematics on the show). Given that, how is she a good role model for girls aspiring to study mathematics? What is she going to tell them, "study hard, reject jobs related to your field of study and rely on your looks to become famous"? "Study maths to become a professional victim and serve as twitter activist for all the right causes"?
It honestly bothers me no end that someone with the trajectory of Rachel Riley is shown as a poster girl for women in science when she has essentially rejected that side of her through her own choices and when I know for a fact that more gifted young men who ONLY care about mathematics are set aside at a lot of schools just so there can be "more women in maths". Well isn't that great, funny how things turn out. You give them unfair advantages in school to the detriment of more deserving boys and the result is that they STILL base their career decisions on their looks when they can. THAT is what people should learn from the example of Rachel Riley.

  • @scaredyfish

Let's unpack her 'anti-zionism' remark, saying that zionism means 'Jews should have the right to self-determination in their own country'. The problem is where do you put that country? If you put it where the current state of Israel is, you have a problem, because in 1947 there's an arab majority living there, and in 1900, during Zionism's early days, the majority was around 10:1. In order to have a democratic country in which the Jewish people have self-determination, Jewish people must be the majority, and in order to maintain a Jewish majority you have to drive out most of the arabs. So Zionism in the abstract is one thing, but zionism as it actually exists is racist.

    • @lubo25
      @lubo25 5 років тому +2

You will note that there is no question about whether there should be a Palestinian state (answer would be don't know/that might be dangerous) which is, as always, the entire and absolute crux of the matter. Anything that involves zionists that isn't asking why they are so vehemently opposed to the Palestinian state is a waste of everyones time. The chances of a peace deal being struck are zero because politicians in key nations who are knowledgeable enough to come up with a valid (by that I mean hard for Israel to turn down) solution are torn to shreds and labeled as terrorist sympathizers.
Israel's hope for a peaceful outcome went by the wayside around a decade ago, these days it teeters on the brink of dictatorship. Netanyahu is hopelessly corrupt and now Prime Minister, Head of Defence, Health, Security and whole range of other positions. Unless everyone important is wrong it heads for the typical death spiral of every other fledgling ethnostate thats been founded since the nation-state era of the early 19th century. The IDF don't have the viciousness to expel the Palestinians and the Palestinians will never give up on the land thus a Soweto or Belfast style outcome is unavoidable. Partition walls may block it for a time but they do not stop love & unity, as you will know.
Don't want to leave you feeling down so here is a tidbit I picked up this evening while looking at related issues. The veteran anti-zionist Norm Finkelstein is still going strong at 65 and now, in a fashion that can only be described as genuinely maverick, stipulates before any tv, radio or verbal debate that he no longer accepts the intellectual validity of the words "narrative" and "discourse".

She expressed her disbelief with the statement "israel is a racist endeavour". But if a state is created on another for one ethnic group, i.e. Jews, at the expense of another ethnic group indigenous to that land, then it is understandable how people may see that as racist, especially when many Jews believe that it is their land because god promised it to them as Jews. She simply buys the line that Israel is some beautiful safe haven for the Jews escaping persecution, and it was for many, but that is absolutely not the whole picture. quotations and facts, while declaring his ‘commitment to find the truth.’”
      - Leopold Labedz
      (Encounter, July 1980)
“Even on the rare occasions when Mr. Chomsky is dealing with facts and not with
fantasies, he exaggerates by a factor of, plus or minus, four or five.”
      - Walter Laqueur
(The New Republic, March 24, 1982)
“After many years, I came to the conclusion that everything he says is false. He will
