Cheers I appreciate that. Always honest on the videos and the only way it should be. I just banked on getting water later into the hike and to be fair didn’t think about it as I was enjoying the hike and filming and when the penny dropped I knew I’d be able to get some…albeit the trudge down to red tarn haha.
Another great video, really enjoyed that even if it made me feel so cold that I put a sweatshirt on ! Great having Kate onboard, always smiling ...... keep up the good work !
Nice video Chris that 3man abisko is for sure plenty of room for two nice see your lady actually enjoys the hobby to and isn’t just being dragged along like some lol
Cheers for that and yes she loves it like I do which is nice. The Abisko is a great tent and really enjoyed using it, so glad I upgraded from the 1 man. Although that’s a cracker too but I appreciate the extra space. Nice that the footprint covers the vestibule too which helps.
Well said and totally agree. I often get water late as don’t like to carry it uphill but with everything else just forgot about it and realised when on the summit but I won’t make that mistake next time.
Great video Kris . You and Kate are really brave only taking those light jackets in sub zero temps, thats the kind of fill i use in summer. I was impressed with the fact that Kay colour coded her nail varnish with her hoodie but i think i wouldn't have spoken to her for at least 2 weeks if she spilt the water that you worked so hard for :) Only joking R kid, i wouldn't have spoken to her for 2 months :). Those Abisko tents are great , i just bought the Abisko 2 and i think it's going to replace my Nallo when i am on my own. I fitted a single extra guy line on each side that has 2 sliders on each and attaches to both of the arches so you only need to bring 2 extra tent pegs but it gives you more sideways stability if (when) the wind direction changes . Keep em coming .
Will do and thanks for your support. Haha yes she loves her colour and the matching or funky colours too. The jackets look like but they’re warm jacket. I had 2 down jackets on. A pretty expensive RAB warm jacket and a montane jacket too so combined really warm and very light. Also the waffle revolution race base layer is warm and light as was my gear warmers long base layer top 👍🏻 You’ve got great tents there, how do you like the Nallo? The abisko much lighter isn’t it and do like the tents. I looked at the Nallo 2 GT too which looks good. I love hearing about a good tent mod and makes sense to do that as they’re sturdy tents anyway. Would love to see the mod.
Oh good :) i didn't realise you was that well layered up Kris. I do like the Nallo, it's my second one . I also have just had vestibule only footprints made fr both tents by Lucy Quinton. I asked her to make hem with an extra 10 cm fap /extention that i can tuck under the inner tent entrance so there will be no chance of any snow getting through and i must say she has done a superb job and she only charges 40 quid and she even puts her own label on and writes the weight. They both weigh around 140 gas which is much better than carrying a full footprint which i dont think you need because the Nallo is 70 denier and the Abisko is 50 i think and i use a sliver space blanket underneath the main tent most times too . I am out next week so i will make a little video of the guy line mods with my very limited videoing skills :) ATB to you both.@@krisgleave
Aah thanks for that. Long one this and probably two brews worth 🤪. I’ll try and stick to the Monday uploads rather than Wednesday as think they work better. And will do, I’ll try and get out again this week.
Hi, just found you two and this vid, good visuals and commentary. BTW, has anyone mentioned that about 200yds away from the Helvellyn summit is a flowing spring of clear water…..maybe frozen in those conditions? It’s on Harvey maps 1:40000, you will see the stream above ‘Whelp side’, apparently there’s water cress to be found as well! Regards and 👍🍻
Hi, thanks for your feedback really appreciate it. Yeah a couple of people have messaged and really appreciate the insight. I didn’t even think to scan OS Maps at the time maybe I should’ve done. It could’ve been frozen but I reckon it may have still been flowing enough. Saying that, some of the flows leading to red tarn were frozen too. I’ll definitely note that one for next time though thank you.
Great video Chris, not been able to wild camp for 2 months, due to family responsibilities and illness. Now time next week to get out there. Thankyou for sharing and producing the encouragement to get out there!
It’s tough when you can’t get out isn’t it but the mountains will always be there and other priorities have to come first at times. Hope you do manage to get out next week…you’ve written it down now so there’s your commitment. Where you heading to?
Well, Kris, that was an awesome camp, but damn cold. As cold as it was , the wind on that summit must have been brutal. It was great to come along on a great adventure with you. Till the next one , have a great one, my friend. Dwayne
Cheers Dwayne! The wind was really low that day, hardly a breath of wind apart from through the night but really low. I’ve been up there in really windy conditions and that easily drops the temperature a lot lower so we were blessed
Very nice vid, loved the scenery and atmosphere. Halo moon. Say 'bye Kate'...😂 The tent looked really good and well suited for 2 persons. Perhaps a sleeping bag liner will suffice for such temps when hiking together?
Hahaha I always do that…say bye 😂. The tent is great, I know I had issues pitching this time but that was due to it being unclipped in parts inside for some reason. It’s a little low inside but it’s great for gear and good space and vestibule.
Aah brilliant that’s awesome to hear, when you looking to do it? It’s a cracking walk I really enjoyed this one. Definitely advise taking longer and enjoying it. Cheers for the feedback too.
Quality guys! Me and my daughter estimated how long it would take you to get to red tarn and back...... nailed it! Both said just over an hour 🤣 Fjallraven tents are a class act mate, great choice. Take care, Adge
Haha love that! It’s a fair little trek down and up Swirral Edge but do love it on the Edges so all good fun. Awesome you both knew the distance and time. The tent is awesome I really like it and will use it a lot more especially over winter. Thanks for your support
Thanks for your support. Awesome spot to camp and it’s the 3rd highest summit in England, I do love it up there. Awesome you’ve tuned in from New Zealand 🇳🇿
Kris I've only just got round to watching this !! cant believe I missed it. entertaining as always I love that route up the Abisko 3 looks mega proper party tent !!
Only just spotted this apologies for the delay. Haha it’s an awesome tent as solid and plenty of room too. After all my one man tents it’s nice to have a bit of space and perfect for winter
One tip I've come across is carrying a drink bottle cap to help apply pressure to pegs. Not neeeded to use it myself yet but might help in frozen ground.
Aah yes good idea. I do have a peg hammer too but never want the extra weight. Might take one this week for a camp to make sure I get the pegs in. On my last one I had to hammer then in with a big stone and pained me denting the pegs 😂
Cheers Roger nice to have you on board. 12kgs isn’t too bad and it sounds like you had the right kit. I think mine was about 9KG without water for this one but that includes filming equipment too with tripod, GoPro, pocket 3 and some other bits. I think my full winter kit I’ll be around 12KG including an axe and things.
Cracking video there Kris, love the longer format. You've made my mind up for me, I've never hiked Helvellyn, so I'm changing from Brecon to try this out next week, keep up the good work 👌
Thank for that Nick and really appreciate the feedback especially about the length. I know the long ones aren’t for everyone but I’ll try and keep them moving and do prefer the longer formats myself too. Helvellyn is a cracker. I normally go up Striding Edge and down Swirral Edge which is a great circular. Can also tag Catsty Cam too which is a Wainwright. Are you camping too?
@@krisgleave Yes I will be, I'm going to copy your route as it will be the first time up there (I've ordered some extra Easton pegs from Valley and Peak as well🫣)
@@steelynick aah perfect. You’ll be fine with the pegs might just have to angle them. The ground is tough but once you get them in they’ll go right down. I had 9” stakes, I use the MSR but same thing. There’s another spot close to mine but further towards the edge towards striving edge. From where I pitched, if you look towards striding edge it will be in front and to the right. Just down a little dip and you’ll get a view of striding edge and red tarn too.

Yeah I never use the Trangia though. I have one but far too heavy for me, plus it’s just bare fluid and if you know it over you’re in trouble. I use the little speedster type stoves, I actually make my own as really easy. They have fireproof material in which soaks up the fluid. So still lights and works the same way but if you tip upside down no fluid will come out as it’s soaked in. Far safer.
If you left the door open you would let out that water from your breath and not be so cold at night. I was camping 30 years before I realised the cold was the dampness trapped in the tent
You can’t avoid condensation and frost on the inside in winter whatever you do. The ice you saw was in the vestibule which is a good distance from us so that’s without any inside heat. When it’s warmer on the inside it’s just something that happens.
Aww thanks Sarah. Yes I swear by electrolytes they make a really big difference especially for longer hikes. Made a bit of a mistake on the OMM Race in a recently video where I didnt have enough water and suffered with cramp. I’ll never do that again.
