YOU DEFINITELY DIDN'T KNOW THIS - KTM EXC XC-W TPI 2023 WARNING !
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- I am really worried and surprised why KTM decided for 2023 to use KYMCO cylinders instead of ELKO which are of sufficient quality on EXC300 TPI, XC-W300 TPI. Can Kymco Taiwanese company really make such a high quality cylinder that can withstand the extreme condition. If something is good then why change it? It is certainly in the interest of saving a large amount of money, as soon as I bought the motorcycle I received a message from a friend, he said i got bike with kymco cylinder. I asked him what do you mean by that, he told me it wont last long, to be honest I felt bad and I thought he was joking.

Before this happened to me, my close friend had the same thing happen on his 2022 model. His piston also broke the head, connecting rod, cylinder and bearings when we talk about the damage that occurred, we can say that it is the same like mine. And I must say that it had a completely factory engine, with an original head, and that it worked flawlessly until this happened. He always uses motorex cross power oil and rides the engine a lot better than me, I riding a lot with the gas wide open while he rides more in mid revs, but everything that happened to me happened to him anyway so its a bit strange. What do you say ?
We riders are family, support the video with like 👍
Does KTM want tpi bikes to fail so that everyone will switch to tbi?
@@DeadEnduro it’s planned obsolescence via satellite linkup. Ktm has the satellite lean out the ecu’s so the tpi’s blow up hence increasing the chance of TBI purchases lol
Someone need to send a lawsuit to sue the company for not doing any recall even after lot of people experiencing this problem
I'm honestly not strong enough to do it, I can't do it alone
@@TheDirtbikeRider Yes, you can!!!
I think the dirt bikes sometimes are uesd for racing purpose. If the recall policy the same as the civilian bike?
So I have a 2023 xcw 300 2 stroke wondering if I should add premix into the tank and mix it through the oil this way I can make it last longer or just change the pistons and cylinders at 40+ hours
@@chadboswick1936 not helping, just flash the extreme sw which adds more oil.
We need Yamaha to build a YX 300X with a TBI soon, they have good quality, there is good demand for these bikes.
If settle for a 250x with reliable electric start
I’d
If that happened, I would immediately buy it without thinking
@@TheDirtbikeRider This prototype was already showed at the Eicma! Yamaha/Fantic is coming!
100 percent agree, All yamaha though.
This is the same guy a few years ago that said KTM is testing TPI bikes on the public before they were actually proven. He modified his bike with a new head and who knows what else. Next he will start complaining about the new TBI bikes and say they are not ready for the public as well. Stop complaining and buy a Sherco or a Beta if you have so many issues with KTM. Or don’t pin your bike in 1st gear until it explodes as expected with after market mods. Happens to the pro’s race bikes all the time.
2023 gas gas EC250TPI. 140 hours original piston original oil pump original everything never an issue. Runs perfect. Learn how to warm a TPI bike up PROPERLY properly.
I’ve recently bought a tm 2t with carb. These are slightly cheaper than a ktm but they are hand built Italian quality (what ktm used to make 😂) it runs kyb forks and all the good stuff. I love it, worth considering. My previous bike was 2020 te 250 2t tpi and never had any problems with 100 hrs. I think ktm has lost focus and starting to use inferior products and increasing their prices that’s why I changed from ktm based bikes and I believe they will lose a lot more customers in the future. Shame ktm
@Dirt Bike Junky I went to look at some TM's on friday. The build quality was fantastic! I love that even with the 23 models you get the option between Carb or TBI. The only issues I know of with the TM is on the fuel injected bike a few people have had wiring looms fry and need replacing. my local dealer believes it's a small circuit board that gets hot and melts and seems to happen when the low fuel light comes on.
another thing is needing a "priming switch" to maintain power to the powervalve should you stall the bike, otherwise it has to keep running a calibration cycle.
What puts me off buying a TM though is the lack of aftermarket parts available. Replacement parts are easy enough to get direct through TM but there's virtually nothing aftermarket available for the bikes, and being such a small brand it would be hard to sell the bike on or get much money for it in resale value.
also the dealer was fairly small without a demo bike and does not do test rides or demo day, there's no way i'd pay $16,800 for a bike without any experience riding it in off road terrain first.
i'd like to stick with KTM but definitely have concerns about quality issues
Hey guys, unite your forces and contact KTM. I'd be interested in her take on the issue.
Unfortunately, I can't do it, I'm not strong enough to do it
All those clips seem to show S3 heads. Detonation maybe or squish gap too small?
I was thinkig about that same. Higher compresion ratio = posibly detonation.
I wonder, if Kymco has slightly different dimensions. And people just throw pre-Kymco heads on them without checking because it's been a perfect fit for years.
My engine had a head with low compression, My friend had the same problem even he had an original KTM head and everything else was original
Yep all S3 heads and the fact it had over 100 hours on it 😂 its widely know TPIs need to be changed at 80h you notice a big difference from doing this.
Lower comp heads, which is what most off-road riders use, actually create less stress for the motor than the stock head, so the logic that these heads cause issues seems infallible at best 🤷♂️
Mechanic here ... Seems to me like that piston has a manufacturing defect reminds me of the kdx piston problem someone needs to put a wiseco piston in one and run it in that cylinder to see if it wears weird ,a wiseco won't shatter like that . I am a ktm rider 18' 350 xcf 214 hrs . Solid as a rock , the suspension needs 1000$ to work well that's not the end of the world .
I remember that. I think it was just the 220 with the piston problems? I had several 200s and never had a problem (with anything)
If you own one i highly recommended a ecu remap to allow the bike to use more oil and not detonate due to the stupid emissions regulations
Just buy a yz 250.

I’m not a hater or a fanboy of any brand. All I know is I know a few very good mechanics in Colorado renowned for their expertise and they’ve warned me to not step foot near a KTM.
My friend have 23 exc 250 tpi he chenged piston at 85 hours and he have around 110 and font have any problem with the bike but he dont ride much wide open
My 2020 300 EX-W TPI 6 Day is perfect after 175 hours. That is with radical Enduro riding in the deep sand in FL. Change the fuel filter every air filter change. Thanks for the tip.
KTM is one of those brands that make amazing machines, but I'd never buy a new model year of any of their machines. They are so bleeding edge with the engineering that they use the customers as R&D. You're better off buying slightly used older KTMs once you are sure it's a reliable model year. Many European brands are similar in this regard.
I'll buy a Yamaha YZ250 or YZ250X and use the money I saved instead of buying a KTM for purchase of upgrades.
I am very happy that I chose Beta 300rr racing 2023 💪.
Good choice 😊
just checked my 2022 300xc glad mine is elco was thinking about a 2023 but if they are kymco cylinders well no more ktms kymco is trash no way the bike is worth a damn with that junk on it my wife says thank you ktm for saving us money
Why are people buying the most expensive bikes to get the worst bikes on the market. Just buy another brand of bike. it's that simple.
I have a 19 300xc. Last year of the carb. I have a keihin 38 on it and it's awesome. Glad I have this bike.
Would you sell it to me? He would like to have such a great motorcycle.

I have a new 23 250xc. Haven't even started it. I just noticed it is leaking oil from the bottom of the case then off the skid onto the carpet (it was beside the Christmas tree) for awhile. I looks to be coming from the sealant between the cases.
@user-fz8fy4zl1c Doesn't have an oil tank. It's a premix bike (tBi).
He is not talking about mixing oil he is talking about engine oil 🤔
What about the starter motor on the GOLD carbed bikes. they ran that starter design for like 10 years. Wheel bearings Stators wiring looms suspension 4t starter failures fuel pumps i mean come on and people still blindly think they are quality. Crankcase seals etc etc , industry loves them marketing dollars suspension fixs constant mechanical needs and the youtube salesman love them so much content and the fan boys keep flying the flag haha. You are right its about time people woke up and start calling the bikes what they have always been 2nd rate quality.
I really think you should try the tm en300es carby. I brought a 2022 2stroke carby. And it out shines the ktm
Unfortunately, I can't buy that bike anywhere near here
Well, some years ago I found your channel because of the video called "if you want problems buy tpi".
Sadly, you didn't seem to learn from your experiences. KTM sells not completely developed and badly tested technology to customers who pay much more for their bikes than people who chose other brands. And they get much less equipment on their bikes for that price and do the field testing for ktm. But everyone keeps buying orange, blue/yellow or red/white KTM 's. Its hilarious.
I got a 22 sherco se300 this year with 2 hours for a price that was some thousands below a ktm and has so much more equipment from factory. Plus I am convinced of the reliability of the carb engine with its great electric powervalve. I am, because a small brand like sherco can not afford the warranty costs and image problems of lot of bikes breaking down on low hours like yours. It would ruin them.
Sherco has the fuel injection 2stroke technology ready, fully developed and tested for years now. I think it will come to market with 2024 model because of emission regulations.
TM is another brand example, small company, brought out 2stroke injected - never heard of problems like tpi bikes have since 2018. Simply because small brands can't afford such a failure like KTM obviously can.
new shercos have reached the exact same price as KTM, so no, the SHERCO is not a cheaper bike price wise.. better than ktm yeh, but not less expensive by any stretch!!
I agree with you, I need going back to the carburator and sherco or beta
My GasGas Ec300 had I think 300+hours with one pistone by last owner, had almost no compression when I brought it. Bring it back alive, was thinking to buy a tpi... but then I may stick with this bulletproof oldie goldie bike.
I now have 100+ hours on the bike, still ride perfectly, never had a faulty plug or any other issues, start perfect in any conditions...just one good kick😅😅
23xcw300 erzberg 5.2 hrs oil pump failure, complete top end is junk, dealer says no parts available for months or more. fml should have taken the 15k to the casino, would be same result.
after explaining that this bike is part of my disabled veteran therapy and how hard and fast I go off the rails without throttle therapy I should see the erz early next week instead of months. in the meantime I bought a husky xp520 chainsaw. Throttle therapy is a real thing!
We all know companies change stuff to build their stuff cheaper, all companies do, not just KTM. Sometimes a newer design doesn't work as expected.
Have seen major failures in cars, for example the BMW swirl flaps in diesel engines. VW/Audi with oil pumps driven by a plastic sprocket. Loads of cam chain issues in all kinds of brands.
I'm quite curious about statistics, how many bikes are out there and how many of them break. It's always the people with drama that post stuff, understandable of course.
The question is what happens next, after the problems, do they help the people in trouble ? Are they fixing the mistakes in next models.
In the end, the emission regulations are bad for bikes, in EU all bikes run lean and most of them are not open ecu's, so you can't change anything without buying aftermarket stuff.
The ktm mx bikes seem to get the option to change mappings again. We had it on the fourstrokes up to 2020, after that they were closed. Everyone with serious changes needed to buy a GET or Carrot ECU to be able to adjust mapping. People complained a lot about it and they changed it.
So, is KTM a bad company, I don't think so... They have the balls to go into newer technology, they take some risk in there. As long as they fix their problems I'm ok with that.
It's easy to point to a reliable YZ250 but in the end I can't get that bike with a registration since it's not compliant to emission rules.
I'm wondering if the crank offset is too big for the height of the piston causing lateral slap of the piston in a cylinder .. I've never seen a piston shatter like glass before there must be more going on than just rubbish parts
This is just a guess, but I think the injected bikes run pretty lean air/fuel. At least the ones I’ve ridden feel lean. I just wonder if this is causing detonation?
Probably,
I have a 2022 and love it , had no problems either, i think this new separate oil tank is causing problems with forgetful riders that don't like to admit they caused there own problems
I ve sold my tei last week. Do you think there is the same problem on 4 stroke ktm/hva?
It seems there was less pbs with carbs
This makes me want to consider Beta or Sherco for my next bike.
Beta
Beta for me

FYI “Planned obsolescence” was a term coined by GM during the 50s and it describes periodic styling changes to make owners desire the latest products.
The theory that poorly made parts are INTENTIONALLY sold is dumb. No company WANTS to produce an inferior product and damage their reputation.
However, market conditions (C-vid etc) have affected quality across the board. Including cae parts and electronics etc.
That being said I will not buy anything Chinese if I can avoid it.
Back in the 80s ktm was highest quality forged pistons .
I see cast pistons exploding in the cylinder . Never happened in the 80s -90s.
The came with Mahle pistons from Europe
Why ktm is using cast pistons when we all know how good is forged piston ? They try to save money or to improve engine performance ?

Just out of curiosity, did you swap the piston before the 65 hour mark?
Dali mozemo stavilti elco cilinar i klip na taj motor?
Looks like all those bikes with the grenaded pistons had after market high compression heads, true?
its low compression head, and few stock bikes blow up also...
This is a knowned issue for tpi if go full throttle full rpm for long time, the piston is to long and hit the rod... the ones who dont keep the bike to rev limiter dont have this issue.
Do you know Husqvarna has the same problem?
Hi my 2020 ktm 150 tip spooges a ton of amount what should I do?

I think the crankcase get fuel sitting in the bottom from running rich and when you replace the sensor it just gets contaminated straight away. can clean them with injector/carb cleaner and they work again.
@@zxcvbnmnz what part should I clean can you please explain?
Are you running out of gear oil? it is possible that the right crankshaft seal is bad
I love the Japanese ❤
This does not happen on them, they have better quality
I'm not defending ktm but is this the bike you have 100 hrs. on? I watch a couple videos where you had it wide open up long hills. 100 hrs is quite long time on a motor with high compression head and running it hard for any brand motorcycle. I found on tpi's some oils like Motorex leave the tip of the exhaust extremely dry even with just easy riding while Red Line ( ester based oil) leaves the tip of the silencer damp with oil. with the extrema high rpm's you turn a ester based oil like Red Line or Maxima K2 may help the tpi to have better lubrication and reduce the temperature of the head and piston. easter based oils have extremely high film strengths also.
The Piston/Clinder has 150 Hours on i 😂 ….
I believe that with that kind of driving this man will blow up a tank.
In his other video he said the engine had 118 hours using motorex. The cylinder head is a low compression head
I agree that holding the bike wide open while climbing steep sandy hills is hard on the motor and that the piston should be changed earlier
It is alarming that other riders are reporting similar damage with less hours
I wish we could get some reports on people running oils like Red Line, Motul, Maxima K2 the ester based oils that have really high film strengths. If they are having the same issue or less issues.
I used a low compression head, which should create less pressure on the piston, which would extend its life. My friends and I have been driving like this for 5 years and we change the pistons every 150 hours and this never happened. Of course, we changed the pistons earlier if we thought it was necessary. At 105 hours, I performed a visual check and the piston looked very well, also the compression did not change. I agree 150 hours is a lot, but so far this has not happened and we have here 10 bikes in my riding team. But why does this only happen on 2022 and 2023 bikes?
Very cool that you are highlighting this. I've been glued since your unfortunate failure, but what's with the goofy voice on this vid? 😜
Unfortunately, I have a very bad English language, so this voice is to help with that 😂
So what now ? Beta 300 rr? I Was thinking about 300 exc next year... but now 🤔

As for the 4 stroke, I really don't know what happened to it for 2023. Maybe it stayed the same as before
it is proven that Quality is getting worse and price up. But what brand you can pick if you want a good 2 stroke? it is not so often but it happens for sure. the second hand value of TPI from 18 are worth flippers money change. This is why I switched to 4stroke now after more than a decade of 2stroke. I can't get this hypocrisy anymore, first 2stroke were cheaper to get along for 500-700hours back in the days, now? used to have a workshop and I tell you the maintenance of TPI up are just insane...a 350 is a better bargain...or the 300sherco is great too. These upgrades and stuff on the 2strokes just get so much costs that it makes you sick. Still a good yz250x is a reaper! Cheap and easy to fix and strong as it can get...the pistons are made in China for KTM as for the cylinder....but the price is still like a vertex while it is not anymore....
Nowadays it is all about making as much profit as possible, quality is no longer important
