I cannot tell you how much you've inspired me to continue with the viola after much discouragement. Reading your tips through the comments section from your videos have motivated me to try again. Thank you, Marc!
@@stephaneschmalen2742 Oh heavens to betsy (accompanied by Ling Ling clutching fake pearls) that a musician should actually interpret the music and try to give it a fresh feel.
This the top of the mountain in music.... Bach, Telemann and a few others! Wonderful performance, exquisite sound... stunning! 5 thumbs up ;-) Compared to the "so-called" top, you are way underrated, mon ami!
Amazing! By the way, do you have a microphone on your viola or something? It sounds really clean and without that static sound of the background and it's incredible
There is no microphone on the viola. There are two microphones in the hall out of view from he camera. A good sound engineer will know where and how to place microphones to capture the best quality sound. But your own sound should be strong and with conviction, that is the key to getting a clean sound. The place where you play also makes a huge difference. Acoustics are everything.
Thanks for the comment. I don't hold the viola only with one part of my body, ie. Chin, shoulder, chest, arm...I think the viola should never be static and should be flexible. I hold it a bit with the arm, chin, shoulder, hand, chest, it all depends on the music and the flow. I try to keep the viola up for a better sound and contact with the bow. The response and tone of the instrument is light years ahead than with a shoulder rest. It might be slightly more uncomfortable but hey... If we wanted comfortable, we'd go to the beach ;)
Marc Sabbah And how can you tune it? It may seems a silly question but the few times I've tried to play without shoulder rest I have had troubles holding the viola while tuning
@@torterrakart7249 I play viola now without shoulder rest or chin rest, and it’s very dynamic & responsive... but tuning is sometimes a challenge for me. I use a wooden spool that’s been cut out with a wide notch for the peg. Turning a wooden spool (such as for thread) is much easier than turning a viola peg, especially if it’s not aligned right. For the A string fine tuner, I actually rest the scroll on a bookcase shelf or mantle, In a performance situation, I would just hunch my left shoulder to brace the instrument briefly. Hope that helps!
"The response and tone of the instrument is light years ahead than with a shoulder rest." I play violin without a shoulder rest and have recently started to play around on viola without one also. It is refreshing to see someone else go without! I have read that a lot of the old masters (Heifetz being one of many) thought that the shoulder rest was detrimental to the connection to the instrument, but I wonder if you could explain what you mean by the sentence I quoted, in your experience?

Beautiful playing. So sensitive
I'm working on this for a recital at the moment and really like your phrasing. It's really beautiful and lets the music breathe.
I'm practicing this piece currently and it's always great to see other visual Angeles from different instruments. Well played!
Beautiful sound of viola, musicality and virtuosity at the service of musical language.

Though the performence is great, I never really found Telemann much worth my attention
