That dude's just cool. First time I've seen a peace out chow. Every chow I've physically seen was obviously temperamental and dangerous. Really made me not think much of the owners.

You said it. My former mother-in-law said that *her* mom had Chow-Chows on their rural property when she was being raised there. She said they were 'mean' and not properly trained. When she went up and down the basement steps those dogs would lunge through the openings between the treads and nip at her legs. She never had pets once she moved out and married. That experience soured her of owning animals forever. Such a shame.

One of my friends was bitten hard by her own Chow Chow, trained, socialized, and all, apparently the dog became aggressive when she taunted him with food. She surrendered him to a shelter.
I was a Chow mommy for 15 yrs. He was a Black Chow with a formidable pedigree. To the rest of the world, he was a formidable presence, but to his Mommy, he was the cutest cuddlebug ever...and I never had to worry about unwanted guests. It's been many years since his passing, and I still think of him and miss him. I've never had another dog, altho I have a bevy of cats. But he always got along swimmingly with my cats, my ferret, my goat and whatever else landed on my ark. If I could get another dog, it would definitely be a Chow.
Anyone who has dealt with a chow chow knows they can be a difficult breed....and then there's Camille, who's life motto appears to be "I am furry potato." Great stuff.
This solely depends on how well trained the chowchow is. I am a breeder of purebred chargers and I can say for a fact that mine have an amazing temperament. I have owned a female since she was a puppy in the mail I just bought he is an amazing dog very very friendly. My female dog and human friendly. She is also trained as a guard dog.
@@alannaaskew2877 its almost like any breed can be well behaved and wonderful dogs but some people are just straight up stupid i would love to own a dog but i know i cant cause i know i would end up being to lazy to take care of all its needs
This does a great job of balancing both the "they're not teddy bears, don't get one if you're inexperienced in socializing a dog" and the "they can still be great dogs and this one is a very good girl" messages.
I'm 73. My Chow Chow is 8. I have been a Chow owner most of my adult life. My last 3 Chows lived 13, 15 and 16 years. I hope my current guy will be around another 8 years. I had a red Chow that weighed 85 lbs which is considered large. My current Chow Chow is a shaded cinnamon that weighs 110# and is 26 inches at the withers, he's a very big boy. Socialization is very important with a dog that size. When raising a Chow you must be calm and even tempered. A Chow has a naturally defensive and protective nature. They are cautious and very discerning. When a Chow does not know you, you never approach. If he is interested in you, let him approach you. Most bites occur when a stranger wants to approach the 'cuddly' dog. A Chow sees this action as aggressive and responds accordingly. A Chow never forgives and never forgets. That's why all of the experiences that your Chow is exposed to must be positive. Having a Chow in your home is no different than another person being there. When I lay him to rest, I hope I have enough life left in me to raise one more.
Agree. A friend had a chow who attacked him. I would pet sit the chow sometimes, it was the only dog I ever thought would actually bite me. Chows can be nuts.

Chow Chows are one of the most aggressive dog breeds, but with lots of training and patience they can become amazing pets! I find them really pretty but I'm always a bit weary of them lol

I’d like to think that in an alternate universe, there are a bunch of dogs on their computers watching another dog with a soothing bark grooming a human.
Agreed! I live next door to a barking dog. My neighbours have a big(ish) house, but on a small suburban property with a mostly concrete yard. All of their neighbours are very close in proximity, and there are at about 5 of them (including us, and not including those across the street). For some reason they thought "You know what breed of dog would be great here? An Australian Shepherd!" A medium breed that's known for barking loudly and excessively when bored or under-exercised. He barks almost non-stop, he's also aggressive towards strangers and other dogs, including my small Shih Tzu. All they do is yell at him when he's misbehaving and kick him outside, which is all the damn time. They barely give the dog the time of day to give him attention, let alone train him! This was a problem, so then they thought: "let's get another Australian Shepherd!" So, now they have two dogs they barely have time for. Why are people like this?!
I had a pet Chow growing up that looked just like this one, His name was Jo Jo. He was the sweetest dog ever. I was an emotional teen and when I cried he would come lay his head in my lap and lick my face.
@@nasa3623 a ‘friendly’ chow is actually a badly bred dog. Why can’t people just respect animals for what they are without wanting to turn everything into a ‘fur baby’?😒 it’s sad because soon enough they’ll be another breed that is riddled with health problems and dies of old age at six
I have always had chow chows. Mine are socialized as soon as they are walking. My female even adopted a baby kitten when she was nursing her litter. I still have the kitten and he still sleeps with my female. My male looks just like the one in the video but much larger. We call him the gentle giant.
Used to have a chow chow with the most gentle personality. We could dress him up. Didn't care. Hug and squeeze him. He loved it. When we got our other chow. He was in love with her. You could just see these 2 were made for each other.
KR YW and they bite HARD too. I had one to wrap its mouth around the lower part of my arm and bite down enough to leave HUGE puncture marks in my skin. I got excited to show my brother my new car and for just a minute I forgot about their dog and he reminded me REAL QUICK LIKE that he was there. I almost ended up in the emergency room that day. And for that reason I don't want NOTHING to do with them. But I do have to say that Camille is a GREAT ambassador for her breed though! She is AWESOME!
Understandably so, I think many just forget that some breeds are purpose bred to be actual guard dogs. They have to be able to at least maim others. Like, I got no use for a guard dog that would let others touch it.
Once you learn how genetics and temperament affect a chow you become more understanding that they’re capable of being friendly. My chow acts like this at the groomers. As much as I socialized and trained my chow it doesn’t overrule the stigma that they all carry. While there are other chows owners doing the same there’s just too many horribly bred ones out there😔
I think Camille has been groomed a lot from a young age and she was probably not traumatised during any session. So she is totatlly chilled and just enjoying the pampering.
I love her very Canadian delivery ...watch Degrassi the next generation and listen to the girls...things sais in a matter of fact way ..with a little dry humor and a pinch of polite sarcasm.
When I was 3-4 years old, my family adopted a female Chow. The Lion King was my favorite movie at the time, so despite her being a girl I named her Simba. She immediately became attached to me and I to her. I have been legally blind since birth (I can see somewhat, but not well), and my parents always told me that it seemed as though somehow Simba knew I was different. We had a large property with quite a few other animals (sheep, cows, rabbits, cats, and a couple smaller dogs), and anytime I was outside wandering around, Simba was right there along with me as if she was my escort/protector. She was my dearest friend and we were always together. She never once bit me or any of my family. A few years later, my family had decided to move. My parents told me we couldn’t take Simba with us; we were moving to a regular residential property and Simba was used to having space and freedom to roam around (she often loved to go swimming in the canal behind our property. They told me she wouldn’t be happy at the new home, so the buyer of our big property had decided to keep her too. I was devastated and begged in vain for them to reconsider. They didn’t change their minds. I didn’t speak to them for quite awhile after the move, and deep down I have never fully forgiven them in that regard. I am now 30 years old, and I have never forgotten that beautiful, incredible dog. I don’t even have a photo of her. She lives only in my memories. I can only hope the rest of her days were joyful ones. I love you, Simba.
I wish you didn't have to go through that pain...my mom brought a beautiful baby boy (Indian pariah) to our home when I was little but my father was against it so after a few days mom returned him. I still feel sad whenever I think about him...but compared to your pain it's nothing. Cause now I have a baby girl for years and I know how much devastated I will be if I have to let her go. Hope she found peace and happiness during that period of time and you get to meet her in afterlife if it exists for real.
My chow chow is a rescue and everything you said about the breed is true. My Chow boy would NEVER sit through a grooming session quietly. This dog was extremely well-behaved!
My Chow/Golden was the grumpiest old man! When I clipped his nails he acted like I was cutting toes off. He was Extremely independent but he always knew exactly where I was and hated to be left at home, he loved adventures. He was not great with kids or younger dogs as he got older, definitely a grump lol.
I have two rescues. Re-homing an adult chow certainly takes a LOT of patience. Those first trips to the vet and groomer are challenging to say the least. You can't get emotional, you have to be patient and calm, and you can't let the stubborn little critters beat you. Patience, understanding, and being more stubborn than they are is certainly important. =) Good for you rescuing a chow! How long did it take yours to acclimate to their new home?
My parents got a Chow Chow mix most likely with a golden retrieve when I was a small child like 2 years old small. She was the most loving dog. I have many memories of us laying on the porch together with my head on her belly as she would listen to me read to her. All she wanted to do was lay in the sun or in the doorways. She was a great dog to have growing up and would always give me kisses when I hugged her.
That is easily one of the most bath tolerant animals I've seen so far, let alone a chow! her owners need serious props for socializing and training and care!
My chow is just like her! He’s such a sweet boy, people meet him & understandably are afraid or walk away. He gets sad because he wants to play🥺 but it’s okay, he’s an amazing dog. He’s almost 2!🥰
@@gabrielaibarra4817 many of the chows being bred in America now are fairly docile. A well bred Chow is aloof, intelligent and under no circumstances a good choice if you want a fur baby. Don’t get a dog just because you like the look. I know it’s too late for you now but in the long run it’s just contributing to the ruining of another breeds health by making them be something they’re not and were never intended for
@@HkFinn83 yes I know. He is definitely aloof comparing him to the dogs we meet at parks and other places. He rather be on his own. He is very independent. Only likes to be around me pretty much. He is just socialized so that’s why he hasn’t had any bad encounters but I don’t take him to dog parks or very trafficked areas frequently. He prefers to walk alone in a trail to just sniff and look around. He’s my third chow. I grew up with two male chow chows, definitely different personalities. They were rescued, therefore we didn’t have much say but I was also 5 years old & they lived to almost 16 years. Very intelligent & protective dogs. But yes I agree they are aloof and as people call them “sketchy”.
I'll always have a soft spot for chows; my first dog ever was a chow chow. She must have been special like Camille--she was cuddly and sweet and definitely had separation anxiety if we left her alone. And her patience for kids was unmatched; she would let my baby sister crawl all over her and would simply walk away when she'd had enough. She did have her wild, independent side--her favorite pastime was escaping our backyard by climbing over our chainlink fence. Once she escaped all the way to the airport runway of a military base. Another time she jumped from the second story of our house with nothing but a mild sprain on one ankle. Man, I miss that dog.
My mom got a chow chow a year before I was born, I was raised with him from birth to 12 years old and he was incredibly sweet as well. Never bit or chased anything, used to bark at neighbors cats but after telling him no a single time he never did again. Never bit or showed aggression even when I stupidly teased him and rode on him as a toddler, just the sweetest thing. They’ll always be my favorite breed of dog! Them looking like bears definitely helps a lot too :3
I had an Akita Chow mix for 14 years. The most patient, well behaved, people & kid friendly dog ever, though he had some anxiety and had a real problem with drunk/on drugs/crazy people, so it was really quite helpful.
My first dog was a chow, too :) I was 14 when I got him and he was truly amazing! Sweet-tempered and cuddly with us, super easy to train, and SO patient with children! The little son of a friend was learning to walk at that time and would hang on to the dog´s tail for balance while they walked the yard again and again, the dog adjusting his walking speed to those first steps of the toddler. He was fierce with other male dogs and the perfect gentleman with bitches. If somebody tried to feed him he was alright with that and took the treat majestically - but bit everyone who tried to withdraw a treat that the human had already offered him. This was of course not true for us, his family, because we could take any food out of his mouth any time it was necessary. He loved snow so much! He would roll around in it with no end, getting running flashes with joy even in old age..... He was almost 14 years old when he died. Rest in peace, my Dear.
My sister had a chow and a German shepherd. They tolerated each other, occasionally fighting because both were unaltered males. However, when Rusty ( the chow) died, Jake (the GS) grieved something awful. Even tried digging at the grave and laying there for hours.
Like a grumpy old married couple, they fought to hash out their boundaries in their shared space, and when one died the other demonstrated their true affection for the departed partner.
I had a blue male and a cream female...brother and sister. He dominates other dogs, but she was an alpha's alpha. Until she got cancer and died they seriously fought 2-3 times a year. She was like some kind of berserker...once she she started she would not shutdown. Even 6yrs after her death he will not sit in the front seat of the truck...her seat.
Thank you from a confused American! I thought intently about it for 2 seconds, briefly considered the possibility of time travel, and then gave up and watched the cute dog

It’s interesting how the ancient dog breeds from the Far East have retained certain behavioral characteristics, which are often described as “cat-like”. The shiba inu is another example of this.
In my opinion, it's a reflection of Asian culture. We are generally reserved, cautious, and don't show much emotion. We are not easily excitable. Don't these traits sound like a cat's? ;)
this is mostly bc the far east is the area where dogs come from! chow chows are as the video say “most likely the worlds oldest dog”. so called “cat-like” breeds like most sighthounds and large spitz breeds are breed to have independent temperaments, they are call primitive bc it’s an trend seen in very old breeds. in fact the dog considered the most “cat-like” comes from african, it is called the basenji. tho, even tho a dog is cat-like, it’s important to remember, it’s not a cat. it’s still very much a dog.
This is very true. Jindi dog and all Korean breeds are highly intelligent but tend to not listen to owners they don’t respect, don’t necessarily like to socialise, can be very aggressive towards strangers without proper socialisation. However the good thing about Far Eastern breeds is that they tend to be fairly genetic illness free (minus Chinese breeds like the pug, Pekingnese, Sharpei and Chow Chow I guess).
I also have a chow chow. Koshii is 1 year old now and he has a purple tongue. He is so behave and friendly. But not when he sees a cat LOL. Here's a video of him. ua-cam.com/video/H4WiKr_URp4/v-deo.html
I had a chow when I was very young. She was extremely well mannered and gentle with me, I was around 2-3. She even let me go into her pen and play with her puppies. No one else could get near her. Since I was the youngest in the family, i figured she saw me as one of her own young so we were very close
We had a female chow chow whom we wanted to get a companion for. However what was available to us are male pure breed chow puppies that are similar to Camille in the video. We did research first if getting another chow would work for us. We noted that male chows are more aggressive than females and had to be careful with that. We picked the one that snubbed us (because our female is sassy and snobby and we love her for that). When that male chow grew up, he became the sweetest cream cake who just loves us to cuddle with him. He is also very sweet to the female chow and would groom her everyday. He would also just lay down beside her. His true aggression showed when he encountered cats and rats. 😅 Camille is so behaved! She deserves all the treats! My female chow always tries to fight the vet and groomers (but is snobby to strangers), she even shocked the groomer when she opened the locked cage with her snout. 🤣
@Hilly - I semi-rescued (didn't like the breeders general set-up and treatment of all concerned) the last two pups at 8 wks. One blue male with a energetic demeanor, and a cream female very reserved almost shutdown. His name was Buddy and that name stuck, they had named her Snowball (almost all white) and there was no way the name was going to remain. Since they were brother and sister, I decided Buddy and Sissy...that lasted three weeks...her name became - Sassy. Brown eyed Buddy and yellow eyed Sassy. She died at age 6 (cancer) and 6 yrs later Buddy will still not sit in her seat.
@@annabeth_chase5030 she would just walk away from strangers. No biting them, even if they tried to pet her, she'll just leave as if she has somewhere else to be. I'll be honest, based on what GwtD said about proper socialization. I dont think we ever properly socialized our chows. :O
That makes you one of the bravest groomers ever. The chow is just about the only dog breed that's banned in a lot of grooming salons due to their unpredictable nature with strangers. Call my paranoid, but if I had to work on a chow, I would have that dog muzzled the whole time. She's cute tho!
when i was a kid my grandma had a chow chow named sparky and i remember him being the sweetest boy. my cousins and i were devastated when he passed away because he was our favorite playmate ♥
She reminded me of my mom's Akita! The breeds are both known to be aggressive if not trained properly, but both are just well mannered kind doggies. Very aloof.
@rachel chanel The way she said it reminds me of the girls on Degrassi the next generation... Saying things in a matter of fact manner with a little humor and a pinch of polite sarcasm.... ...."OH CANADA...."...LOL
What a puff ball with what appears to be a very gregarious demeanor! I have an 11 year old, cream colored Chow who is an absolute sweety. Wary of strangers if I do not introduce. Will let children pull on her ears and poke her face, but will not let you into the house if you are in a foul mood. Ultra smart across the breed. The ultimate personal guardian!
I used to breed Chows, they are such cute little fuzzballs when they are tiny. Socialize them from a young age. They will defend you to death. I was saved more than once in sketchy situations by my hero, Freddie aka Mr FuzzyButt 😄
I took an adult chow to a new vet; during exams I hold my chows with one arm under its neck, and the other over the fore body. This is for the vet’s comfort. After several visits, the vet was talking to me, and was closer to my Chow than usual. The dog planted a delicate butterfly kiss on the end of the guy’s nose. He kept talking, while tears ran down his face.❤
I've met a half-Chow once; it was easy to tell what her other parent was due to the classic black 'saddle' marking and longer muzzle she had (German Shepherd). She had a *HUGE* voice, deep and booming, but she was as sweet as her namesake: Honey~
Chows are notoriously aloof and defensive of their home. However, they can be incredibly cuddly with their family members. While they will bond with the whole family, they usually have a single person who is ✨their✨ person. They'll sit on their person's feet (a sign or respect) and they LOVE to lick them, especially while you pet them! They're great dogs all around!
My chow is just the same, so incredibly patient and loving. She loves being groomed and pampered. All it takes is early socialisation and an owner eager to introduce them to new people and experiences! Mine is a great visitor to nursing homes now.
Omg! A chow-chow! 🤩 I did ask once in the comments for you to groom a chow-chow! Yay! 😍 This one is an angel, so calm and loving her grooming. You just want to hugs her! 🤗. they are also known to be quiet, ( dont bark much) well this is an interesting dog for people who prefer cats! Lol they sure need to be well socialized and trained. I learned that the ones bread in England were less aggressive than the ones in USA. So that is another factor to consider.
It's very inconvenient to look like a cute stuffed animal when you are weary of strangers and have a cat like personality😅 like all you wanna do when you see them is hug them
Yes chows definitely are cats in dog bodies. Our chow chow pretty much only listens to my mom and sometimes me, but mostly only my mom. He doesn’t play with balls or toys very often, he doesn’t bury bones or play with sticks, he just kind of sleeps and eats. Like a cat lol. They are a lot of work though and a TON of grooming and hair. You will never get away from the hair it will be in EVERYTHING. Often they can skin or coat issues or eye issues that can be very expensive, by dog us constantly on antibiotics because he has sensitive skin so everything makes him itchy. Sorry I’m just really excited that the video is about chows cause I have one and I have only ever “met” (I never talked to them I only saw them in the small town I lived in.) one other person who does.
They can be so chill and awesome! When I was a teenager, we adopted an adult female chow chow who had already been well-trained, and she was just the best. My cat now acts more like a dog than that chow did lol.
I saw a chow chow at the dog park and he was so friendly and beautiful! I asked the owner if her house is always covered in fluff. She explained that she had just adopted him a year ago and he was completely bald. His last owner had shaved him down to the skin so she wasn't even sure he was a chow until he grew back his luxurious coat only a month earlier. I just can't imagine a bald chow!

What a good pup.

I am out of words

My chow is friendly. I hate how they have this stigma, socialise well and treat them well and they will behave
Won't lie, I'm terrified of Chows. One bit me when I was a kid and they make me nervous. Camille is, indeed, an incredible ambassador for her breed.

Hope she found peace and happiness during that period of time and you get to meet her in afterlife if it exists for real.
did you visit her?

@@gabrielaibarra4817 many of the chows being bred in America now are fairly docile. A well bred Chow is aloof, intelligent and under no circumstances a good choice if you want a fur baby.
Them looking like bears definitely helps a lot too :3
You guys had a very well trained Chow Chow. I applaud that.
🥺🥺🥺😭
Like a grumpy old married couple, they fought to hash out their boundaries in their shared space, and when one died the other demonstrated their true affection for the departed partner.
I had a blue male and a cream female...brother and sister. He dominates other dogs, but she was an alpha's alpha. Until she got cancer and died they seriously fought 2-3 times a year. She was like some kind of berserker...once she she started she would not shutdown. Even 6yrs after her death he will not sit in the front seat of the truck...her seat.

It’s interesting how the ancient dog breeds from the Far East have retained certain behavioral characteristics, which are often described as “cat-like”. The shiba inu is another example of this.
As the owner of a Shiba mix, I can confirm that.
However the good thing about Far Eastern breeds is that they tend to be fairly genetic illness free (minus Chinese breeds like the pug, Pekingnese, Sharpei and Chow Chow I guess).
chinese sharpeis act the same way, in fact sharpeis and chows are cousins, and both are thought to be the oldest breeds!

Chow Chows wouldn’t make a good sized snack for a leopard.
Starter, you reminded me of a Tasmanian Devil tumblr post

Hello, pupper
XD
Chows are notoriously aloof and defensive of their home. However, they can be incredibly cuddly with their family members. While they will bond with the whole family, they usually have a single person who is ✨their✨ person. They'll sit on their person's feet (a sign or respect) and they LOVE to lick them, especially while you pet them! They're great dogs all around!
I have chow and that's exactly how he acts
Sitting on the feet is a sign of dominant behavior. They are claiming you.
idk my chow pretty much loves everyone including strangers
@@Anon_E_Muss not true at all lol
Mine really loves to lick me 😅
Happy Thanksgiving to my neighbors up north 🤗
What a darling little blonde puffball she is and extraordinarily well behaved as well.
I love how you include the breeds origins and characteristics! Keep up the awesome work the puppers love you for it! (And so do we)
My chow is just the same, so incredibly patient and loving.
Probably because very rarely are dogs kept outdoors here in UK except maybe Working dogs .
Camille is such a good girl
It's very inconvenient to look like a cute stuffed animal when you are weary of strangers and have a cat like personality😅 like all you wanna do when you see them is hug them
She is an exquisite breed ambassador...my boy was very similar. Great pawrents...
Thank you so much for your videos. I’ve learned a lot about grooming my own dog. I also really appreciate your love & humor with these dogs. 🌟💜
I grew up with a chow in my cradle, he went everywhere i went. He was my brother, bodyguard and partner in crime.
I still miss him to this day.
Chow Chows can be somewhat unfriendly."

What a good pup.
Tough when you have such a good buddy as a child. I still miss my Aussie.
That is one well behaved Chow. And she is beautiful as well.
That is one FLUFFEH BUM! I love fluffy dogs. Their fluffy butts makes it so hard for me to take them seriously because they’re sooooo cuuuute!!!!
Cat like personality? This sounds like the perfect dog for me.
Shiba Inus are also classic cats in dog bodies lol
They can be so chill and awesome! When I was a teenager, we adopted an adult female chow chow who had already been well-trained, and she was just the best. My cat now acts more like a dog than that chow did lol.
"And I rounded up her dump truck" I'm sooo dead 💀 Camille has no business being caked up like that!

What a good pup.
I love this channel! Not only do I get to see gorgeous dogs but I learn so much of the history of those dogs.😍👍
