- Today on Jon's Moto Garage we check out a used 2008 Yamaha Star Raider on Craigslist. It's been a while since I jumped on one of these and they're always a BLAST! This one is basically bone stock and ready to rumble. Let's see how she rolls!

Buying and selling motorcycles for profit. How to buy and sell motorcycles.
I just bought a 2009 on Monday. It’s in great shape and is super fun to ride. I’m in love with it and all the guys I work with are too. Even the die hard Harley guy gave me props. 😂
Nabbed a 2017 Raider. One of the last new Raiders sold at my dealer. Raven edition: Black with all the accents blacked out. Everywhere I go I get compliments and usually end up chattin with folks and makin new freinds. Love my bike.
Nice buy! Yeah, the raider definitely turns heads! And such a fun bike to ride!
its a 2018? According to KBB they came out in 2008 and the last year was 2017. I bought a 2012 Yamaha Raider S last year and it was new with 1 mile. If yours is a 17' or 18' either way they are almost exactly alike in all year models. Enjoy.
@Ross Malagarie I checked my bill of sale and the sales person hand wrote 2018. I did check my registration and it says 2017. But you are correct 2017 was the last year. The only thing I can think of that would have misled him and then me was my Raider arrived in December with a shipment of 2018 Yamaha Bolts. I bought it in December but did not pick it up until after the winter melt in May. At any rate, thanks for pointing that out and I corrected my statement.
hey just checking in after 5 years, how you liking the raider still ?
@marshboii Hey marshboii. Absolutely. Still enjoy it. Tons of power and never lets me down. I still get compliments on all the time, and people don't believe me when I tell them it's a 2017. As a matter of fact, I just made my last payment on it a few days ago. So that feels good, too. Other than the accessories I added to it, it is still stock. Even the pipes. I think I am going to add a removable trunk to it for trips this year. Thanks for asking.
I’m getting rid of my FJR n getting me a Raider @58 it’s a great all around Bike for poker runs short rides in the city n country.plus it’s a YAMAHA never have to worry about her just ride her. For the money u can’t beat them
Yeah, definitely one of the best values in the v-twin cruiser line. I've never ridden an fjr, but have heard great things about them. I imagine the f6b is the closest thing I've ridden to the fjr. Thanks again for watching!
THERE IS NOTHING BETTER THEN THAT RAIDER. THE BEST BIKE EVER MADE ACCORDING TO ME . MINE IS AN 09 JUST LOVE THAT MACHINE
Love the Raider! Bought mine a year ago 2015 raider bullet cowl edition 3500 miles 7500 bucks. The Military guy selling it had just bought a new goldwing, I was like ARE YOU SURE you want to sell this. I only asked once and rode her home mid February, 30 degrees out smiling the whole way
2008 Raider & a 2006 FJR. Love them both.
I've yet to pick up an FJR, but have heard nothing but rave reviews on them.
Awesome bikes . I had the 1st year edition of the FJR and still have my '08 Raider.
I’m a Harley guy at the present but have come close to buying this bike before. Yamaha makes a great bike as a former Royal Star Venture owner. In my 45+ years of buying bikes It’s my opinion that you can pretty much tell how well a bike has been maintained just by looking at it. Of course you have to do your due diligence and inspect it. These bikes are a great bang for the buck. Had a chance to pick up a new 2015 for $9k in 2017 from a dealer just wanting to unload it. Still kicking myself for that one. My favorite color too the Red and chrome. Oh the could of ...should of ...would of,lol. They make a good touring bike too because all you have to add is add a sissy bar to strap a bag to. In these days of full dress touring bikes there’s something to be said for touring on a bike like this especially if you’re solo.
You hit the nail on the head! In most cases, I know in the first 30 seconds whether or not I'll buy a bike. That's what I love about motorcycles (compared with cars/trucks) -- it's all right there so you can see/hear/feel whatever you need to. It's hard to cover things up. I've sold a few royal stars over the years, and one yamaha venture. Those are smooth bikes. I think if yamaha had made them fuel injected, they would've continued to sell. But I guess they have a brand new re-designed model available now. Thanks again for watching and commenting!
I learned about this bike the other week. My first and last motorcycles were Yamaha. I haven’t been on a bike in very very long time. But my girl and I are looking at getting back on so I’m doing my research. And where am I? Right back to the damn Yamaha! And I have fallen in love with this bike. Especially some of the custom mods I’ve seen people on UA-cam have done. Now I want to find out what the differences between the 2008 to the I believe 2023 models now, are. Since I’m going to customize it won’t really matter if it’s brand new or not.
Dude I love your channel. I learn something every time I watch one of your videos.. I’m on a 84’ zn700 and you’ve been helping me a lot with which bike I want next...
That's what I like to hear man! I'm glad you enjoy and find it useful. Hopefully entertaining too. Lol. You were thinking about the bolt before right? Lots of options for sure.
" he sent you the wrong address " LMAO the oldest trick in the book. Prob lookin out the window to see if your sketchy or not.
😂 for sure!
Hi Jon. I'm torn between the Fat Bob and the Raider. From a mechanical (Engineering) point of view, my perception is that the Raider is the smarter, more reliable, more financially sensible buy. But then, I tend to like the stockiness of the Fat Bob very, very much. I would prefer to apply the bike primarily for outrides, but also for the local bread run now and then. I am 6.1 and weights in at 190. As you rightfully mentioned, having respect for the bike and your own capabilities, none of these should proof to be a problem for someone with not as much riding experience.
Hmmmm... that's a tough choice for sure. Sounds like you already have a good idea of the pros and cons. Maybe just a matter of seeing which deal comes up first in your area? Let me know what you end up getting!
@@JonsMotoGarage Will surely let you know. Here in South Africa the Yamaha is very scares, and the Fat Bobs are more readily available.........
@@gertvandenheever5302I'm
Good video. Enjoyed it! Be safe out there…Raider all the way!
I WAS THINKING THE EXACT SAME THING WHEN YOU WENT TO THAT FIRST HOUSE (bad maintainance, scruffy bike) - I WOULD GIVE MY ACROSS THE STREET NEIGHBORS ADDRESS TOO WHEN SHOWING MY BIKES AND I'D BE OUT THE FRONT WAITING FOR THE GUY TO ARRIVE,WITH THE PINK SLIP AND PEN IN HAND - I GOT TOO MUCH NICE STUFF IN MY GARAGE
I love this guy, he obviously is in a position to generate great income, , and uses it to buy all these toys, and shares them with us.
Love my Raider! Getting very hard to find on CL in California.
Too much bike for a beginner probably eh? So in love with these.
I wouldn't recommend it as a first bike unless you're a bigger dude. But I'm sure people have pulled it off. Lol.
Jon's Moto Garage I am 6'4", 210 lbs...😅. Probably not brave enough to start off with it, but I definitely think I want to work my way up to it. Or something similar. What would you recommend as a starter cruiser for a big dude like myself?
@@PhatMasterTony The raider sits nice and low to the ground and is well balanced (not real top heavy). At your height, I don't think it would feel too big, even as a new bike. As far as the power and torque, as long as you start out easy and reserved, you shouldn't have an issue. People get themselves hurt even on small bikes starting out when they don't respect the machine and don't practice the basics (starting, stopping, turning, etc.). Once you have the fundamentals dialed, the bike size doesn't matter as much. I'm only 5'8" and I have no problem even on heavy full baggers (vulcan nomad, road glides, etc.). Try to get into a dealer that'll let you sit on a few to get the feel. Keep me posted if you end up getting one! Happy hunting!
Thank you so much for your help. Much appreciated sir.
@@PhatMasterTony No problem! If you lived here local I'd invite you to swing by and you could check out a few of the rides in person.
Those bikes are BEASTS!
Which one you prefer suzuki boulevard or that yamaha?
Hey what cruiser/sportbike would you recommend for a 6,1-6-2 300lbs beginner guy that just uses it to commute to and from school/work(doing errands, and occasionally riding for fun)? This, or something bigger? Smaller even? The major goal is to not get bored of the bike as intend to have it for a while. Great video btw!!
Thanks for checking the video! First, I'd try to narrow down if you want to go with a sport bike or cruiser. There are lots of videos regarding that specifically. Definitely pros and cons to both. And the right bike also comes down to what your plans are with it. Short daily commute, weekend warrior, bar hopping, cross country touring, etc. I always recommend doing additional research regarding reliability and long term use as well, since most of my experiences are based on short rides/initial impressions. With that being said, here are a few cruisers you might consider looking into:
yamaha raider, roadliner, or stratoliner (all 1900cc)
yamaha v-star 1300 or 950
kawasaki vulcan 900 (slightly smaller) or 1600 (nomad, classic)
suzuki boulevard c90 or c90t
I would add the Honda VTX 1300, but they're all carburetor so I wouldn't mess with it. If you like the chopper style, the Honda Fury is a consideration. The Raider is big/relatively heavy, but it sits nice and low to the ground, and is well balanced. Hope this helps somewhat in getting you started on your new bike search!
@@JonsMotoGarage Thanks alot going to be looking for these to see what works for me!!
@@IaMaWeSoMe7478 No problem! If possible, hit up a dealer and throw a leg over a few ro get the feel. Happy hunting!
maybe you should consider losing some weight, you know for health reasons
what was price that was paid for this bike and/or what is price range that this particular bike sells for?
I paid $4800 for this particular bike. The 2007-2009 models seem to go for anywhere from $4500 - $6500 if you want one with relatively low mileage (
u look like Peter Parker. Nice vid man really enjoyed it
Hahaha...I used to get that a lot back in the day. Thanks for watching!
He visto unas cuantas aqui en arizona y hace mucho calor aqui.
Where do you live? I can't even find used motorcycles in Oklahoma. The only new bikes in showrooms are dirt bikes.
I live in Montreal and have the 2008 Raider. Want a 2017 but can’t find it. This bike is so great, people don’t want to get rid of it. After a couple of years searching I saw one but it had aftermarket pipes. The to in one with kind of wrap around. Ugly ugly ugly. The OEM pipes on this bike are to me, the best designed ones in the motorcycle industry. I’m sad to see that manufacturer don’t build cruisers anymore. Only HD still doing it. I hate to think that HD will get the cruiser market.
Do you miss shaft drive reliability?
I've always been a fan of the belt drive as well. But truth be told the primary I ride currently are both chain (drz and dyna w/chain conversion). I definitely miss low maintenance belt and shaft. Thanks for checking the vid!
So the belt is less maintenance, that's good to know. On some bikes the chains seem too weak, high tendency to stretch and conseqe eat the sprockets. But I imagine maybe some belts the same. No sprocket wear but constant adjustment. But sounds like the Raider isnt one of them. Subscribed
@@RJSoftware2000 Thanks for the sub, brother! I buy/sell on the side as a hobby, so I don't put tons of miles on all the bikes that cycle through the garage. Based on my research though, belts and shaft drive are, in general, a lot lower maintenance. The chain is definitely highest maintenance with replacing sprockets, adjustments, and lubricating, etc. I have a chain on my Harley Dyna cause I'm a wannabe wheelie artist. Lol. Someday I'll get there. Thanks again for watching!
@@JonsMotoGarage gracias John
vs the Stryker... some say the Raider is not pleasant to driver because of the power... true?
It's a big bike, but sits low and is well balanced. I don't find it to be overbearing at all. I'm about 5'8". Maybe I'll do a more in depth ride/review soon. I think that on paper it is a but daunting for some riders. Thanks for checking the vid/channel!
hey I appreciate the quick answer! I'm coming from a 900 Vulcan and I find it lacks a bit of oomph on the highway, my bud's Stryker (which I should test ride) looks and seems about right at 1300cc but then I looked around and just a couple of grand and I can get this beast.... contemplating both! :)
@@danf8047 The stryker is definitely a good "in between" option. Still more than enough power to cruiser at highway speeds and a bit more nimble and easy to throw around. I think the stryker would be a great jump up from the vulcan 900. Ride safe, brother!
thank you for the advice, cheers! ride safe.
My wife is 140lbs and I have to watch if I downshift to pass someone or the back wheel spins when it hits the painted center line , lol
Is that a good bike for tall people I'm 6"8
How many Raiders did you have and don't know how many gears it has?
Can you tell me what you paid for the bike? It's beautiful. Thx ( your garage looks like mine. )
Thanks for checking out the vid/channel! I will be posing a vid here soon discussing what I paid for the bike. I also picked up a red 09 raider recently and will post a vid on that price soon as well. But between you and me, I paid $4800 for the black one. At the time there was nothing else comparable. Since making the purchase I have seen a few competitive options on the market in my local area. What are you riding at the moment?
@@JonsMotoGarage Thanks. I bought a 2008 with 12k miles last week that looks just like the one you bought. He had it at 5900 and I offered 4500. A few days passed and he called and said he would take my offer. Lucky me. Thanks for the vids.
@@billdoerflinger6541 nice! Yeah, that's a smoking deal! Pays to be patient. Half the deals I get come a week or so after I initially reach out and make an offer.
como quisiera tener un garage como el tuyo. bueno al menos tengo una raider
Me encantan las raiders! Y gracias por chequear el video! Y sí, por lo menos tienes una de las motos mas potente de la calle!
Let me know where can I buy one like you did ❤Yamaha driver
hello john! hey i have a ? how much will it coste the smallest yamaha the 1100?
Prices are starting to go up on them up in Canada! ....
Dang, that's a drag!
@@JonsMotoGarage its crazy late 90s harleys are in the same price range now !

Thanks for watching! Yeah, yamaha did a great job with the raider imo.
The guy may give The wrong address on purpose. He keeps an eye out and see who goes across the street to figure out whether or not he wants to follow through with anything.
what ramps did you use to load it
What state are you in? Why do you need a notary?
Arizona requires notaries for titles. We're one of the few states that does. Thanks for checking the vid!
We dont require notary in ga but I always have a notary do any title for saftey of covering my own arse.
@@spokes1355 yeah, never hurts to play it safe.
Why would you need to get a motorcycle title notorized?
Jon, how tall are you? I’m just shy of 5’9.5” with a 30” and inseam…since I seen this video I’ve been fighting with myself between this and the M109….I haven’t seen a raider locally for me to sit on and see, but you think I’ll be comfortable and able to reach the foot controls with the looking so far forward?
I'm 5'8" (not sure on inseam) so you shouldn't have any problem with the raider. I find it to be overall a lot more comfortable than the m109r.
@@JonsMotoGarage THANKS JON…and I think YAMAHA is making the RAIDER again….
What's with the audio on the helmet cam?
Throughout the entire video, or just certain parts? I think it's the same as in most of the videos. I don't have the highest quality lapel mic, but a new helmet and audio set up are on the to-do list. Appreciate the feedback! And as always, thanks for checking the channel!
Listening on my earphones, the audio seems to have a 70 to 30 volume ratio. The 70 being on the left ear, 30 on the right if that makes any sense. It's only during the scenes where you're wearing the helmet. Regardless, really enjoy the videos. Keep it up!
@@igloo8439 Good to get the feedback. Not sure what the deal is but I'll look into the settings with the editing software. Thanks for bringing it to my attention brother!
its fast but i dont like that sound . I'm actually looking for that Honda VTX
¿Que pasó amigo?👍👍👍
What did you pay for this raider?
I think it was $4500. I would pick the raider for comfort and the warrior for fun.
Jon's Moto Garage so hard to decide lol Both are priced around $3800. I don’t typically ride over 150miles but it’s always a possibility. Thanks for replying! 👍🏻
He gave you the wrong address on purpose
"The place looks sketch?" What does that mean?
That was a judgmental comment on my part, and I shouldn't have said it. But an example of what looked "sketch" to me were the manikins laying by the front door. That's not something you typically see around these parts.

Thanks bro! I'm digging your new profile name!
@@JonsMotoGarage thanks bro.
Don't be so judgemental about someone's at word appearance not everyone can be a modern hipster LOL and have the perfect middle-class family or to appear to have those things some people worried more about more important things than the front lawn
I agree. Like I mentioned in the video, I hate to judge a book by its cover. However, in my experience buying motorcycles, when the property is run down, the bike typically is as well. I was born in a trailer park myself for whatever that is worth (well, born in the hospital but taken home to the trailer park. Lol). Thanks for watching!
@@JonsMotoGarage I posted befor o seen that and I wasn't trying to be a butthole I just don't like when people do that Iv know people who's lawn looks like crap and car parts everywhere but when you go inside it's like a 5 start resort some people just have allot going on and don't get around to everything but yes I do understand what your saying it can be a reflection of how well they may take care of there belonging but anyways I did otherwise enjoy your videos and I really like the Yamaha Raider would like to own one myself one day but can't seem to find any around my parts here in old ky lol have a blessed day brother
@@ttjbiggunner2025 All good, brother! Your comment got me thinking a bit about how my remarks come across, and I agree 100% that there are much more important things, and more to a person than the surface level stuff. The raider is a great bike. Hope you find one soon, and ride safe!
$3500.00
That would've been a smoking deal. I actually just barely sold this bike (within last few days). I'll have a vid posted soon going over what I paid and how much I sold it for. Thanks for checking out the vid!
Hmmm, very judgemental of you, why wouldn't you buy a bike because the house was a little untidy and they owned cats????
Yup, that was a judgmental comment on my part, and I shouldn't have said it. But an example of what looked "sketch" to me were the manikins laying by the front door. That's not something you typically see around these parts.
"Very judgmental"??? Who are you kidding?? if the house looks like crap and they are hoarders then most like the bike wasn't taken care of either, its called common sense. if they cant take care of themselves, they sure wont care about some bike.
Utter bullshit.
Yea, like we never judge on a daily basis. It's human nature, and pointing out something is " sketch", is just saying the truth, and what we all think. How DARE Jon be human.
