Sharon Jung is a nurse practitioner at Puget Sound Neurology in Tacoma, WA. In this video, she shares what Duopa™ is, who is a good candidate for it and the benefits of exploring this type of medication therapy. Visit www.dpf.org to find out more about living well with Parkinson's.
One update to the video - At one point Sharon said that most MRI scans cannot be done after DBS. In some situations, patients can have MRI scans after DBS. It is true that in some situations, they cannot. However, with the new technology, there is more MRI compatibility.

Wow! Thank you, Sharon. This was very informative. I'm going to put this video on the TV so my Dad can watch it. As you know, he's 90 years old. He doesn't do well with anesthesia any more. In fact, he can barely tolerate novocaine at the dentist. I am worried about the insertion procedure. I'd be really interested in knowing whether it's done with a local or if he would have to be put under? Either way though I am concerned that he may not handle it! I also want to say that I am grateful that it's you treating my poor old Daddy. You personify compassion. Thank you. 💞

Has there been any research on a liquid form of carba/leva?Perhaps a liquid form would be more easily absorbed in the intestines?

Hi, thank you for the question. The reason why the liquid carbidopa/levodopa does not work is because, again, it has to find its way from the stomach to the jejunum, which is the middle section of the small intestine. Not only does it have to go a long way, there is more evidence showing that some of the gut bacteria may break down the levodopa, along the way to the small intestine. I certainly have patients who make a liquid out of it. I wish that the liquid formulation solved the problem, but it does not. Sorry that it took me so long to reply, I just saw your question. If you have more questions, please ask them. Best! Sharon Jung, ARNP

What if PD person has Lewy Bodys and severe constipation?

      Thanks for your question.
First, Duopa is an option for people who, because of cognitive issues like those associated with Lewy body dementia, are not candidates for DBS as an advanced therapy. Regarding severe constipation and duopa, some studies find that constipation can be a side effect of Duopa over the long-term, but this is a possibility with other Parkinson's treatments, too. It may be worth talking with your care team about whether Duopa is right for the situation you are facing.

Should not call what you do as therapy. Please leave that to properly prepared to treat.
