My first trip to Burning Man was in 1992. I was a part of a group that were invited to bring the first sound system out to Burning Man that year. When I arrived around midnight, the camp was silent.....not a sound. There was no light, no color and no sound. The camp looked like a bedraggled refugee camp in black and white. We parked on the edge of the camp and did what any rational human being would do: We put a Trance CD in the boombox and turned it up. Larry Harvey appeared out of the darkness and we were just hanging out talking when another gentleman showed up. He said: "So you're the asshole ravers"? Yes....thats how it started out there for us in 1992. I looked over to Larry Harvey....he said nothing. Larry told us before we got out there that some in the camp may not like our amplified presence out there in the Desert. Although there was about 600 people attending that year, only about 10-15 people came out to the sound camp which was placed 1 mile outside the main camp. The main camp was boycotting the amplified sound camp because they wanted quiet at night. I get it....Desert silence is profound.....but so is music.......and so is dancing. Inclusiveness was not one of the principals of Burning Man at that time. Regardless, Larry Harvey had a vision for Burning Man and he had personally invited us.....and yes, Larry Harvey did come out to the Sound camp that first year to see how his vision was coming along. I offered him a hit of Ecstasy.....he declined. In spite of the resistance, Burning Man had a destiny and Larry Harvey, in spite of the resistance, stewarded Burning Man through those early challenging years so that you can now enjoy the transformational experience of Burning Man today. I went back to Burning Man one more time in 1995 and have not been back since. I'll give it one more go one of these years. When you are enjoying the music and dancing out there at Burning Man in the coming years........think of us. Peace.
I haven't returned to Burning Man since 1996. Someone wrote recently that they received some good advice from a friend: "Stay away from areas where large crowds congregate.". I stay pretty true to that these days. Its alway challenging out at Burning Man,,,even in good years. I lost my Van in 1996 15 miles from camp when I got stuck in the mud at the edge of the playa. Back then you could drive anywhere you wanted to. Took 3 days before the mud dried out and someone could pull me out. My shelter, supplies, everything gone for 3 days. I rolled up in someones carpet to stay warm at night. Very challenging and you sure find out who your friends are..........not many. But thats Burning Man. Thanks for writing.@@rigelb9025

I wonder how a festival said to be for all is extremely limiting by the exorbitant cost of tickets. Truly the prices are completely out of touch with normal people.
I first went out to it on Ocean Beach. Some people got me to go with them a few years after it moved to Black Rock. While attending we witnessed a horrific motor cycle accident. The rider had been beheaded, and was known by the people I went with. It was a silent drive back to San Francisco, and I never went back.
