On one side I love projects like that, on the other side I'm afraid they inspire hundred thousands of people to sink tons of batteries, solarpannels and stuff in the sea or lakes in their neighbourhood.
I assume homeland security could, and probably do, monitor the locations of satellite modems, like the one used in this project, that are transmitting from the middle of the ocean. Especially if the trajectory of the craft is unusual compared to other ships.
I tried solar panels but I get only 20% efficiency the most. Once in whole full sun %60 efficiency. Use MPPT controller. For a kayak to carry the extra 15 lbs weight of a panel onto a kayak. I just do not see it justified to capture solar energy for extra power. What solar controller you use in your experience to the most out of the panels. Thanks. Please advise me....

Bayu Amanda it already completed the Hawaii trip... They launched it from Hawaii to New Zealand but I'm not sure if it is actually still on it's voyage.

This is cheap already. Reliable, for a short distance, probably yes. But using airplane uav might faster.
