WHY YOU GOTTA BRING JAVIK TO THESSIA
    • Mass Effect 3 - Why Yo...
THE CITADEL STANDOFF - HOW TO SAVE ASHLEY / KAIDAN IN ME3
    • How to Save ASHLEY / K...
    0:00 Introduction
    1:00 Prothean VI Info Dump
    3:13 A Better Reveal
6:04 What Happened to the Council?
6:59 Bailey and Others on the Citadel
7:26 Nobody Fs with Aria T'Loak
8:11 Mad Dash to the Beam
    9:17 The Theory
During the assault on the Illusive Man’s base at Cronos station, we defeat Kai Leng and recover the Prothean VI. Once the mission is over, we get a massive info dump from the VI.
So yeah, the Citadel is the Catalyst and by the way the Illusive Man moved the entire Citadel to Earth. That’s a lot to absorb in 30 seconds of dialogue and Bioware commits a cardinal sin of writing - telling us about a massive plot point rather than showing it to us.
This immediately raises a lot of questions.
How did the Illusive Man suddenly seize control of the Citadel? It took Saren an entire game to locate the Conduit and let Sovereign in. So how did our boy pull this off when his entire organization was crumbling? And when the Cerberus coup attempt had already failed? He just jets over there and takes the station? I want details.
The Citadel was moved to the Sol system. Again… how? Did he just tie some ropes around the station and haul it into the nearest Mass Relay?
What role did the Reapers play in taking over the Citadel? Did The Illusive Man shoot them a text and say meet me at the Citadel bruh… and bring your U-Haul.
The game never answers these questions. It feels like an entire mission or at the very least a cutscene is missing from the plot. There had to be a better way to present such a major plot point to the player.
So we know the Reapers were grabbing people on Earth and beaming them up to the Citadel… but what about the millions of people who lived on the Citadel? We never learn specific details, but I think we can make some educated guesses based on what we’ve seen throughout the rest of the series.
With help from the Illusive Man, the Reapers seized control of the Citadel and moved it to Earth. They began pacifying the station’s residents with their usual methods - killing some and converting others into more Reaper forces - husks, marauders and the like. But it’s unlikely that they wiped out or converted 100% of the population. There just wasn’t enough time.
Think about it - how long did they have control of the station before Shepard reached the Citadel beam in London? It couldn’t have been more than a few days. There were millions of people living aboard the Citadel, and many places people could hide. As powerful as the Reapers are, they aren’t omniscient - they couldn’t possibly have located every single person and dealt with them.
So while Shepard is confronting the Illusive Man and chatting with the star child, somewhere on the Citadel it’s likely there are people still alive. Perhaps Commander Bailey and Kelly Chambers survived after all. After selecting a color coded ending, it’s likely that the Citadel would remain in Earth’s orbit. The mass relays would need to be repaired in order to move it back to its original home. Maybe it would never get moved at all. The survivors of the attack would likely rebuild and repair their homes on the station and perhaps the Citadel would thrive again in the aftermath of the Reaper war.

My interpretation of the Star Child is that it's a recreation of the kid that dies in the beginning of ME3. The Leviathans showed that they are able to project themselves as things familiar to you in your mind, so this is probably the Reapers using Shepard's guilt over the death of the kid. The Citadel *is* a Mass Relay, so the indoctrinated Illusive Man boarded, reached Citadel Control with the help of his Starboy master, and pushed some buttons that relayed the station itself to Sol system - to outside eyes this move might look more like teleportation than like a typical relay jump. I further speculate that roughly half of the people on the wards found shelter and survived, while everyone on the presidium who was unable to flee died there.

@@ThoraxetheImpaile100 The Illusive Man still has access to Shepard's mission file. He doesn't need the Prothean VI to use the Conduit on Ilos. It seems like a softer target then bashing or sneaking past Citadel Security. If 3 dozen Reapers showed up in Citadel Space, the Council is going to run back the "close the arms and lock the presidium" tactic, and when Cerberus comes pouring through the Conduit, they'll be just as Surprised Pikachu face'd about it as Saren and the Geth.
As for the jumping itself, it does need an arrival point, true... but Sol has a relay. Assuming *it* can serve as a launch point for itself, it could reach any area of the relay network in an instant. It just needs a landing relay. This doesn't even restrict returning it, later; the Citadel Nebula still has its relay, too, so they can return it later.
I imagine there might be room to build Multiple Reapers on the Citadel. It's possible Shepard got shunted to the "all human area" because they are human. If Garrus had followed them up, it is possible he'd end up in some different, all Turian area. Humans got put close enough to get to the control board because of the Illusive Man/Dumb Luck/Story Drama/whatever bs needed, but we'll never know if the conduit has the ability to sort by species.

Harbinger may have greater access to the Citadel functions than a bog-standard Reaper like Soverign and could therefore prevent the whole "closing the station" situation. After that the question of how they move it isn't really a major issue for me. I assume that the IM just travels to the station and the reapers are the ones that attack the citadel, and move it to earth, either through the mass relays or somehow using ftl or the citadels own mass relay functionality. Perhaps the catalyst took control of the citadel itself to enable this all to happen to some extent.
What I don’t get is why the reapers didn’t attack the citadel right from the get go to take control of it and the mass relay system. Cutting off everyone in galaxy from eachother. This would make the reapers job much easier, like in the previous cycles.

They however were never locked out of the relay system but probably we're not looking forward to an all out assualt on probably the most secure place in the galaxy without first getting more troops ( thus the harvesting ) and by proxy throwing the existing government into disarray. A little late but some food for thought. Me and my friends think there’s a small and subtle way that gives hints that the Reapers could move the Citadel. If you look at the current location, the Citadel is roughly in the middle of practically all of the sentient species, Quarians being the only exception. But if you look at the Protheans, a large portion of the ruins are found in the Attican Traverse, which means the Prothean Empire was halfway across the galaxy from it.
We believe that the Reapers move the Citadel to a segment of the galaxy that has favorable progress/potential to be the next harvest. This would explain the displacement of the Prothean Empire to their capital and the favorability of the Asari, if the Protheans put so much effort into these people, then they’re practically on their way to be the next selection for the harvest. We also theorize that based on this the Citadel would next be moved closer to Parnack, the Yahg home world, due to their current technology being at 20 century humanity.
Just a bit in mind, feels more than possible based on the Reapers’ technological superiority and strategy for the harvests.

My guess-the illusive man was alerted to the upcoming attack on Kronos station and fled to the citadel alone. He probably contacted the reapers(it’s hinted he is already talking to them), and they immediately arrived and seized control of the station. They probably would have waited longer but the crucible made the situation urgent for them.
Most of the inhabitants on the citadel probably died, at least that seems likely. Then again, if you play your cards right-C-Sec and any military personnel(and possibly a civilian militia) would have made liquidating or converting the inhabitants a lengthy process. I imagine the reapers seized control of the base functions of the citadel, and sent ground forces to deal with resistance, or at least keep them pacified.
I can see Aria making it, she’d have a dozen escape routes planned. But it’s hard to say. Same for the council.
After the ending-the citadel might be moved back to the Widow nebula, or it might remain on earth.
The citadel is itself a mass relay, and the reapers probably have not kept it in the same place the whole time so it probably can move on it’s own. Or it can be pushed.
My guess is most people you see are dead, though there were likely many hold up that fought on until the final choice.

This feels like a cop out but is as close to cannon as we could get, also note the renegade ending destroys the citadel so I assume that implies some did live and this ending kills them.

I always had the theory that thanks to some earlier preparation by C-SEC after the Coup Attempt a portion of the Citadel Residents managed to survive thanks to shelters built into the Keeper Tunnels. This came about after I remembered an earlier bit after the Coup about something about the Keeper Tunnels and that some of the remaining Cerberus Forces managed to retreat to the Tunnels. It was a pain to dig them out of there therefore could have been used later for the same reason when the Reapers took control of the Station.

Random thought: It is really weird that we treat bioware almost like a soccer team, most of the founderes and significant countributors are already out, the new approach they have at games is totally different from what made we fall in love with them. Comparing ME1 and DAO that had compelling stories but a more "peculiar" gameplay, to MEA, DAI and Anthem, that have kinda of a bland story compared to the first two, but a more market friendly gameplay, makes me think that whatever the next Mass Effect will be, it will be made by totally different people, and a totally different enviroment.
ME1 had diversity in a time diversity was not a thing, i mean liara is basically a bisexual alien, in a lot of ways ME1 brought to me many concepts and ideas that were a bit ahead of its time and also not very common in most "AAA" games.
Now, MEA and Anthem simples seems to try to reproduce whatever is "in vogue", most of its writers are not in love with sci-fi or ME, but with things outside its universe.
At least with DAI they were not so drastic, the gameplay focus is pretty clear, but they were able to maintain both "combats types" and a somewhat good stories. Of course the main villain is not even new, and most of the characters are not so great, even if they had more potential, but at least they also focused on the story aspects...
Come to think of it, MEA also kind of recycles the same "villain idea" with *spoilers* the same theme that they just turn other aliens into "husks" *spoilers*
Thank you for listening to my TED talk.

" liara is basically a bisexual alien"
The Asari being all female bisexuals is a trope, not a new idea in sci-fi at all. We have a literary history going back over 100 years of writers creating female-only utopias or dystopias. The idea of all-female societies goes back thousands of years.

I'm just adding my opinions, not commenting specifically on yours, many of which I agree with.
I think early BioWare games are victims of "rose tinted glasses" where people overplay their strengths and underplay their weaknesses. They offered something new, exciting and incredibly engaging. However, I don't have a particular negative opinion about later games. DA:I is my favorite DA game to replay. I thought the story and characters were great. (Returning villain, but it offered a lot of insight into the magisters and the lore that was only hinted at in the Legacy DLC.) I think it mostly suffered because BioWare just doesn't have the hang of open world, so there was too much "filler." I enjoyed ME:A generally, but in addition to the open world problem, the story and characters were mostly "meh." I still felt it had its moments throughout, and the gameplay was amazing. DA2 had a *lot* of flaws, mostly because EA forced a rushed development, but it still had some amazing emotional story and gameplay elements that still get to me to this day.
My only point is that I think gamers (in general, don't mean you) need to stop falling into the psychological fallacy of "splitting" where games are either perfect or crap. They all have good and bad qualities & things they do well and things that fall flat, and the design choices made by the devs are simply not going to resonate with everyone.

It wasn’t their fault, EA rushed the studio. Originally the reason the Reapers showed up would have even been entirely different; rather than them being part of a greater Organic/Synthetic conflict, it would have been that use of the mass relays began to distort and destroy the fabric of space-time, and the Reaper harvest prevented the Milky Way from collapsing in on itself. This original plot line was tied into the ME2 Harstrom mission with the sun aging rapidly, it would have been the first example of how mass relay use was warping the fabric of the universe.
