I've been learning piano for the past 5 months; 4 months with an interactive online app and the last month with a teacher. When I get discouraged I listen to this and think I've got to keep going. I want to be able to play this.

Lots of amazing talents coalesce here. A beautiful tribute to Ray Charles, written by Dave Grusin and showing the influence of Grusin’s musical muse, Vince Guaraldi. And of course Hiroshi’s masterful performance brings it all out.
I wish I had a teacher who could go slowly bar by bar through this arrangement and teache me what is actually going on. Then I think I would really understand and be able to play the blues.
Glad you posted this Hiroshi .. as a hamfisted guitar player who is now learning to be a hamfisted piano player, I figure if I slow this down it will make a good finger movement exercise to practice .. then hopefully I will be able to play it at warp speed such as in the video ... 🙏
Great tune, great performance. I have recorded some piano bits from The Firm as well, though do not read notes, so always have to sort these pieces out either by carefully listening and/or reading hands/chords as from vids like yours, haha! Your play is very clear and in a nice pace though, so I will have to find some time to transform your vid into my own play :-) Thanks!
Wonderful piece. If it is not too late to ask, I would love to know which piano, or keyboard, this was played on. I love the sound, especially in the lower register. Great gospel and blues licks, just right to sit back and relax by.
😊Simply excelent :) I remembered the sheet music was somewhere around here but I dont see it anymore. Can you re post it or indicate to me where it is? Cheers
Very great playing and arrangements! Thank you! For educational purposes, it would be truly amazing if you could put fingerings on some difficult passages (for example, the fast ones). Your material is already priceless and it is possible to catch your fingerings by slowing down the video but maybe in the future editions of your pianobooks you'll find time to write them down in the sheet for such noobs as me :)
Nice sound but maybe a bit too structured and clinical for me? Blues isn’t as rigid as classical! Not your fault of course if It’s for an exam but there’s 3 things that I’d love to hear more of in the piece. 1- James Booker’s note emphasis (the way he hits and releases certain keys), 2- Dr John’s varied timing (the way he hangs back on certain keys in his right hand then picks up the rhythm) and 3- Oscar Peterson’s fluid runs with his lovely accent notes. Just some friendly suggestions 🙂
None of them play the piano "orchestrally" -- spontaneous arranging, I call it -- as opposed to jazz. See Andre Previn, the best accompanist. Followed closely by composer/arranger Dave Grusin. Spontaneous arranging -- beyond jazz. Ask Hiroshi. He'll tell you. He's in their league.
Just started to learn this the other day after learning your Slow Gospel Blues piece :) Dec 2021
I loved his composing for the Goonies. Great movie that had some beautiful leitmotifs.
