- Echo & The Bunnymen video clips & an interview with Ian McCulloch and Pete de Freitas. This was found on an old video and the picture quality isn't great. However, it's a rare clip as it's from a programme that aired at about 2.00am, so I thought it was still worth putting on here. Not sure of the year it was aired, probably 1987-88.
thank you whoever put this up - because of you I've been able to hear my dad's voice for the first time (well that I can remember anyway). I am truly grateful.

Lucy your dad will be missed, but his art will live forever, a big hug from Chile
Lucy your dad will be missed, but his art will live forever, a big hug from Chile
Best drummer I've ever heard.....
i love your father
Lucie, I saw your dad's band at the Glasgow apollo in 1981. It's still the best gig I've ever been to and I've been to more than I could ever remember. I was and still am a huge fan.
Thanks for your comments, I rarely hear bad things about him, it's nice to know I'm the legacy of such a kind and talented man!
One of the most amazing innovative drummers of that era ...saw the bunnies in Dublin December 1985
if your still on line , it is true today as it ever was .
.X.
I appreciate your input
I talked to him once on the wee Scottish tour .It was the eighties and I was a kid so thought everything was about money. He said it was about experiences seeing sunset's and stuff...I'm 57 and it's been the best advice ever ..Also we had nowhere to stay . He shared his bed and the only thing he asked me to take off was my wet socks ..A true gent ❤️
Your Dad was one of the most underrated and brilliant drummers of all time. He was/is my drumming hero. He's the reason I started drumming! R.I.P. Pete.
Pete de Freitas was a portuguese descendent, born in Trinidad and Tobago and an important composer of the group. RIP
Thanks for your message sorry for the late response, I don't use youtube often... I was 9 months so I didn't know him at all, but it's nice to have opinions of him from outside the family, learn how other people viewed him (without the biased family love in the way!)
The first four Bunnymen albums are unimaginable without Pete de Freitas' masterly and endlessly creative drumming. I'm from Liverpool and was an Eric's regular and saw the Bunnies with just their drum machine. Pete was a Godsend.
Pete is one of my favourite drummers and I wish I had seen him live, he was the anchor of the band. Cheers from Mexico
My favorite drummer growing up as a kid. I wanted to be him. Your dad is sorely missed, Lucie. God Bless you!
I met him in the small pub next to the Hammersmith Palais back in about 1983 just before a gig. He was leaning up against the bar and just had to say hello to him. He was the reason I loved the Bunnymen, totally in ore (?) of him. After shaking his hand I felt I had met my God. He was very polite and happy to talk to fans
Rest in Peace Pete, always remembered
The Bunnymen haven’t been the same since Pete left this world. His drumming was perfect for Ian’s voice and Will’s guitar. Great great drummer. We all miss him dearly.
the best band in the world absolutely my word RIP PETE MY FRIEND.
wow RIP uncle pete...glad you got to see this luce!x
Got one of Petes drumsticks from the York festival in 84.
battered and bruised but my most preized possesion.
RIP Pete.
+Paul Carr I'M JEALOUS.......KEEP IT NEVER SELL IT..I HAVE IAN'S AUTOGRAPGH WILL NEVER SELL I HAVE IT FRAMED.
Lucie de freitas,I met your dad many times back in the day mainly in the everyman theatre although I never got to know him that well he was a lovely/intelligent guy and in my opinion by far the coolest dude around,he always looked cool,he will be hanging around upstairs with Lee Marvin,Marlon Brandon,Sinatra Elvis ,well you get my drift,r.i.p. Pete.
Thanks mate. Pete was the Steve McQueen of the percusion world: oozed class, power, was broody - but nothing false about him. 100% the right man for the job. Compare that with today`s "indie" drummers: doing that silly huge air inhale before they strike the drums. All show and false emotion. And nothing like the heights which Pete, as a drummer, existed on.
Took the superbike, with care, to the Japanese mountains today. "Porcupine" country. Pete was up there somewhere, in the cumulus.
Great drummer PETER DE FREITAS!
Great men in a fragmented fragment. Precious stuff. Pete and Mac were core 80's icons for me.
R.I.P. Pete.
for the longest time, my experience of echo, was listening to the records. Seeing all the live performances was mind blowing. The performances are unreal visually. Seeing Pete play as he did, the entire group. All the live with or without visual are amazing.
In the early 80's i had the pleasure of meeting Pete outside the odeon in birmingham..He wanted to know where Boots was (i dont know why?)...I said i had to go there as well? So we both went across to boots and spent half hour talking about the band? An absolute great guy..Got a free ticket to that nights gig as well as meeting the band and getting my "Never stop" single signed....R.I.P Pete...
Lucie, saw your dad and the other Bunnymen at the Bismarck Theatre in Chicago, '84. He was placed downstage (up front) alongside the other three. All four lined up front. Tremendous! He could make those drummers sound like an army invading the heart and mind.
+Jeffrey Hoge I really liked the fact that they would place Pete up front with the rest..not that if he was palced behind them means something negative..Pete was a great asset to the band an original ..loved his style of drumming. I don';t recall any other band that place the drummer up front with the rest of the members...BUNNYMEN RULE!
+NicBunnymen Yes, Pete was the greatest, but I'm glad they still give a nod to their original drummer Echo.
agree with you Christine.
RIP Pete. Seems like yesterday in 1989 I was at Irvine Meadows in CA when I heard the news. First words out of Bernard Summer’s mouth when I told him ‘Yer joking?’ Sad day.
Best Band In The World Then And still could be Now. Ian Great Voice.
Pete, rest in peace, we won't forget you
Great men in a fragmented fragment. Precious stuff.
And these two were cleverer than all of them.
miss lucie, i'm from chicago seen your daddy in(1984) great drummer nice dude
miclael - You've seen him on this trip to New Orléans?
Bubblevision I'm so sorry I didn't reply to this I rarely actually login to my youtube account but thank you for your message, very sweet of you!
Thanks enormously for posting. I have been looking for an interview with Pete forever. Never thought I would actually be able, ever, to hear the great man speak. Far less well-spoken than I expected. "That Was A Pleasure." Cheers.
@luciemdefreitas Lucie, there was a new video posted today that includes a few seconds of your dad talking. See watch?v=w7VJfDOvLno at 03:36. Maybe you can contact the uploader and see if they have the whole show. There is probably more of him in it. I saw your dad play. He was a great drummer!
@bunnEgirl Strange how Ian singing is extremely clear but you can barely understand him when he speaks. Meanwhile Pete is speaking the Queen's English, very precise clear accent. Either that ... or Ian is just drunk.
Pete was middle class southerner, Mac is working class scouse--their accents were very different. Though, Mac being drunk isn't unlikely. It's been said he was drinking a lot on that last tour.
The drummer wasn't a Scouser that's why and it was a Liverpool band. Thank god he didn't speak the Queens English they'd have been disowned in this city!
@ 1:15 Ian sounds like he's being cocky, but it's so true! He's a million times more clever than those loser critics who don't actually produce or create anything, but just smugly pass judgment on those who do. Regardless of what the critics might say, I recognize genius when I see it.
Christine Marie - I'm Dutch, is that Liverpools (or Liverpudlian?) he's speaking? I wish I could understand what he's talking about, great accent though. I know the Beatles' accents but that's about it.. :)
I'm just reading his story in an old Mojo magazine. He's got great personality. I'd love to find out more about him.
It was a pleasure
My pleasure. Too bad that the uploader closed their account. I'm afraid I can't really remember what the show was now :(
There was me living in Japan, thinking of Pete. In the mountains. On a Honda 750, in the mountain. Tis Pete.
pete would have been so scorching hot at 50, august 2nd. guaranteed. he is and always will be a giant of the music world . ask stephen morris of new order . ask anyone who saw this fabulous ,phenomenal drummer, every concert ,every song. at glastonbury 1985 they headlined, the galaxy has never been the same . love for peter forever
Thanks.
Does Mac speak English?
Someone PLEASE TELL ME what music video is at 3:01
The game
@luciemdefreitas . Hi, wow, touched to see your mssg. - I met your dad in 1984 - he was nice not to mention very talented. I was sad when I heard he died. How old were you then? shame you didn't get to know him - gone way too soon.
is that Pat Fish if Jazz Butcher fame doing interview??
No, it's Gaz Top
Terribly sad Pete is no loger around. The 4 of them WERE the band. 😢
Why young people dies early in this world?
🙁🙁🙁
I`m clever" - aye.
anybody got footage of the Sex Gods, the one-off band by Pete and some crazy roadies? I think they played at the Grey Whistle Test, maybe?
@transonicbuoy1 Well said mate.
0:32 Pete de Freitas cool drummer early Echo and the Bunnymen R.I.P Glory to Ukraine 🇺🇦
@bookwormgal1996 Plus he says "cleverer" lmfaooo
@jabberwocky1969 Lol I really think Ian's drunk in this particular interview. He sounds all deranged and slurred and I can't understand a word he says. In other interviews I can perfectly understand him, but if you try really hard and listen carefully you can sort of get what he's saying in this one.
