  • Properly prepping a window opening is worth the extra effort. Unfortunately many homeowners get stuck with the repair bill from water intrusion caused by a bad window install. Our window installation expert Rob Wood has seen (and repaired) more than his fair share of damage caused by poor window and siding installs. Here he explains what he does and why he does it when getting ready to install a new window.

As a sheet metal installer of 20 years I would use Henry's fortiflash and do a 45 degree angled piece on the exterior wall corners and cut the tabs and fold them in to the window frame then do the interior bottom and 8" up each side and do a wide pie cut on the corners and fold it to the exterior wall covering the corners. Then the window pan is installed with a slight pitch so water flows to the exterior.

Excellent demonstration with standard Fortiflash (which is in stock at my HD). I was considering DuPont Flexwrap that's over 5x more expensive, until I saw this.

Pretty good boys. I’d add a back dam before membrane, slope the sill add PVC shims and don’t insulate the sill pan ever

Why don't you tape the top?

We do. It was a spontaneous video and we ended it a little prematurely. Thanks for the comment!

Do you flash the vertical sides of the windows after it's installed?
    And the top??

Hey Jon, if you're referring to metal flashing, that's only applied to the top. We put two layers of flexible flashing around the perimeter of the window. One layer on the rough opening before the window is installed and the second layer over the window flange after the window is set. Hope that helps.
