This is my father exactly. Makes up anything to justify his decisions. Then goes way of topic. The battle can never be won.

I've just watched "Who do you think you are" Ruby Wax and it explains a lot about her parents. The way they were wasn't funny at all but likely to be as a result of experiences in Europe in 1938 and her mother's mental illness..............Mental illness ran in her mother's family and Ruby is affected also............

linda brown indeed, I just watched Ruby's WDYTYA and it was moving to see her discover the mental illness that pervaded her family. Many of the US WDYTYA are obsessed with proving they are related to George Washington, were Pilgrim descendants, were descendants of Civil War heroes or the Salem Witches, it was refreshing to see something real and painful ( not that I'd wish that pain on anyone) because our histories are sometimes painful and we are not all descended from ideal ancestors but flesh and blood people who often suffered.

I watched the episode too. I've heard that it takes 4 generations for the trauma of the holocaust and trauma in general to leave a family. The trauma gets passed on to each generation.

@@joshuataylor6087 I'm glad you mention trauma the whole family were traumatised which is not an illness though the 2 may coincide the former seems more likely

What was that sound? Was the furniture covered in upside-down scotch tape?

Plastic covers. My grandma had plastic covers on all of her furniture, but I grew up in the 60's & 70's.

yes, so did i. Remarkable how we all think our family is normal until we start living independently and see a bit of the world. I quite understand the rigor mortis in Florida!

That's so true. It can take years until you mentally disconnect from them too and see how crazy they are.

I watched who do you think you are. I’m sorry for all you went through! I admire so much about you. Im nobody to say, but it seems they loved you in their own way. On another note, my Miami mom, gets so nervous and upset when I borrow her car to go to Hialeah on the expressway, even worse! Fort Lauderdale, which she thinks is just too too far lol. Can you imagine when in my thirties I mentioned driving to Pompano beach for a conference lol 😅

I can totaly understand where hers dads coming from. he dose have a point about taking wrong turns in that city. he is abit over paranoid yes. but he strikes me as someone who knows all to well the buden of life long pain from feeling like you could have done more or at the very least not played any even so much as unserpecting part in something terrible that might happen. I think this is what ruby cant seem to understand. its about what her dad and can and cant live with on his own mind. thats a massive thing to live with. not to be taken lightly. yer hes a man who has leanred the hard way about that.

    • @stevegreen9460

This is not justified, this is extreme anxiety and a form of control that needs help in resolving itself.
Her Dad is an extreme anxious case and like lots of anxiety sufferers, finds just about any activity to be fraught with peril. We can clearly see Ruby is a fully grown woman here capable of taking her own risks. He needed help here, just like her mother I believe who was equally as bad, if not worse from Ruby’s stories.

    • @stevegreen9460

no I think you are all missing the point, he is simply not wanting to have any part in something that would be heart breaking for him regardless of how remote the chance may be. this is a jewish man who narrowly escaped from the a german govermant that was going to kill him and all his loveded ones, after he got out he was trying to get his other family member out of germany but was unable to in time. those family members were then murdered. life expirace like this will stay with you your hole life. I would think he carriers a great pain in him over what happend even if there was nothing he could have done, he will still carry a massive amount of guilt that he couldnt help save his famliy from being murderd and will always torment himself that he could have done something diffrently.

Totally agree. Ruby may well cringe at this now. Meditation and mindfulness has calmed her down a lot. Just caring parents. This is quite an old video.
