MAKING WABISABI CHOPSTICKS 箸作り

- While I was in Yakushima, one of the southern islands of Japan, I stopped by a wood crafts shop to make my own pair of Yakusugi chopsticks. Yakusugi are special Japanese cedar trees native to Yakushima that are over a thousand years old. Cutting down Yakusugi is illegal, so all the wood used for crafts are sourced from naturally fallen trees.
The wood is split by hand, and each block is an imperfect shape, embodying the Japanese wabisabi aesthetic. The more wavy and twisted blocks are actually more expensive than the straight ones!

Note: They don't speak English, but during the class, the instructor will point to a book with English sentences written in it. There are two shops in Yakushima, each with morning and afternoon classes.

I've also been here! One of my favorite pictures from that trip was of this sweet man who taught us how to carve the chopsticks. I'm so happy to see this!
This reminds me of the scene in Surf's Up where they are carving a surf board out of a log with a clam shell.
Totally did not just read the title as Wasabi Chopsticks...XD
Nori TheFriendlyOrbit yep, totally did read that as wasabi
This was so cool to watch :) thanks for sharing
I love your channel!! You truly know how to make and eat delicious food .... Thank you and looking forward to more!! :-D
What kind of cutting tools are used to shape the ends of the chopsticks?
感觉你在日本玩了好久喔
I am going to find the twistiest, ugliest chunk of fallen wood and make some expensive chopsticks.
