One of my animation courses in college had us redraw any character in 30 different poses but it had to be in-model, so I used Bart Simpson and I can tell you the first few tries were rough but its so surprising how WAY off model the one in the video is (actually maybe the eyes were just really small that's why) AND THE DRAWING WAS USED IN THE GUIDE I USED TO DRAW BART
It looks like it’s mostly the eyes and the handle on the Atari joystick. Increase the eye size and have Bart hold the joystick correctly and that’s pretty much it.
Groening can definitely draw the characters better on a good day. He drew Life is Hell and it looks great imo. Seeing some of his other Simpsons sketches, they’re alright. The likeness to their tv counterparts varies a lot, I get the sense that drawing the characters accurately hasn’t been at the core of his professional work in a good while.
My dad's FIRST ATTEMPT at a new style of art was used by his art teacher as an example of what not to do, right in front of him in college. It kinda ruined art for him, and it made me, someone trying to pursue art as a potential lifestyle, well it made it so i didn't want to learn it all from college.
Matt groening actually CAN draw the characters... just not the approved character design versions used to by the Korean animation studio that produces The Simpsons.
That looks like an awesome bar simpson you would see drawn in a random middle/high schooler notebook or on a random wall in the 90s. He could have said that was his inspiration because apart from that style and proportion of features stufd, his drawing was perfect
Honestly that Homer and Bart are much more unique than the current animation style. It just adds more character when you don't have restrictions. It's even funnier if you've ever watched Vanoss play Gartic Phone and draw over 100 versions of Homer over the course of a dozen of videos
