I don't completely buy it. 9 turnovers against the Cowboys in Super Bowl XXVII when all it takes is to cover the ball with both hands? Sounds like some of the Bills were handed other kinds of bills. No, not all of them. Andre Reed had 8 catches for 152 yards in Super Bowl XXVII and 6 catches for 75 yards in Super Bowl XXVIII against the top 10 Dallas defenses. Obviously he actually tried but,you know what Emmitt Smith's good buddy Thurman Thomas told him after losing 52-17? "Time to get paid". He was bought!
That Thurman Thomas fumble that was returned for the touchdown changed the entire game. Buffalo just fell apart in the second half. The next drive was a 3 and out and the Cowboys just ran the ball with Emmitt to eventually score on his rushing touchdown. An interception by James Washington and a 4th down and goal conversion iced the game for the Cowboys. The Bills had their chance and Thurman Thomas and Jim Kelly turned it over.
I think even Thomas himself after the game blamed himself for the fumble as it did basically give Dallas a lifeline. Not to mention Kelly getting sacked for the first time after further breathed new life into Dallas.

That James Washington return for the touchdown and the 3rd down sack on Kelly afterwards just breathed new life into the defense. The defense just held the Bills and the Cowboys offense got it done. That's why they won 3 Super Bowls because they got it done when it came down to crunch time especially the defense.
Emmett Smith said before that fumble Buffalo was wearing them down mentally and physically. He was already starting to doubt and others too that they could win the game and then......................the rest is history as they say.

Kelly was sacked for the first time in the whole game after that fumble so Buffalo lost all the momentum.

Physically dominant teams like the Bears, Redskins, Giants and 49ers. Then along came the Cowboys and packers near the end of that. The only team you could say was somewhat finesse was the 49ers but they could mix in physicality with it which is why they won five Super Bowls in that era. The AFC couldn’t take the pounding. Plus all the best teams were in the NFC at that time so after going through that gauntlet just to get to the Super Bowl, you were definitely battle tested. The AFC was just cannon fodder. No wonder most of the Super Bowls in that streak were blowouts.
