  • How can an automated CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) device resuscitate a casualty and save lives in a Mountain Rescue environment?
Dr Steve Rowe of Edale Mountain Rescue Team demonstrates how to effectively deploy an auto pulse device. During a medical training session at Buxton Mountain Rescue Team's base, Steve goes into detail about the benefits of using an AutoPulse machine. The device enables consistent chest compressions to a casualty who is experiencing a cardiac arrest. This then enables team members to focus on extricating the casualty to a Land Ambulance, Air Ambulance or Coast Guard helicopter for transport to hospital.
One such incident on Blencathra, in the Northern Lake District, required the use of the AutoPulse. Our colleagues from Keswick Mountain Rescue Team were called to assist a severely hypothermic and unresponsive fell runner in January of 2021 (link below). With the skills of volunteer rescue members they managed to resuscitate Tommy, the casualty, whilst waiting for support from a coastguard helicopter who then evacuated him to the hospital. Members of the Penrith Mountain Rescue Team also attended the incident.
During an interview in the video Tommy provides an in-depth account of what he went through whilst suffering from severe hypothermia and how he nearly died!
Tommy has set a target to raise £10,000 for an Autopulse for the Keswick Mountain Rescue Team.
