    YOU MADE MY DREAMS COME TRUE! I followed your instructions and had my Starlink dish sent to Moab, UT. Just picked it up. I am using it now to type this review, in a parking lot. Your tip about tweaking the location if it doesn't work was a life-saver. Now I will have AWESOME internet for our dream trip (2.5 months in remote areas in our camper)

      Thanks for sharing! I have wondered if I was the only one who had that issue. I confess it took me a while to figure that out. So glad it saved you time and aggravation. It's a weird feeling to be connecting to your router and getting great internet service in the parking lot, isn't it? I'm very envious of your 2.5 month trip! Please do share some of your experiences. Would love to hear them. Safe travels!!

    So 6 days ago I posted that question below - I now have my dish and am hooked up. Scruffy - you are the MAN! I didn't even have to drive to the setup location. When the dish arrived I changed my service location on the app, and plugged it in. 5 mins later, I'm online. Don't tell too many people folks.

      Hi Justin. So glad it worked for you! There are a few ways to improve the speeds. The easiest is to unplug your dish, wait a few seconds, and plug it back in. Especially when roaming this can help. There are other aspects that affect speed and latency also including how far you are from a base station. Another way to test things is to take the dish out on the road and play with it a little to see if makes any difference. I confess I've travelled quite a bit with mine and I've never seen it that slow. Good luck!

    I have a question about what you said at 11:02. You said you wouldn't try this if you're trying to get Starlink in your house because you may not have coverage. I'm looking at the availability map and I am RIGHT between two availability spots, but my particular city is waitlisted. Wouldn't that mean satellites are nearby? And if so, could I activate the service at the nearby city and then drive the satellite back over to my house? It seemed like that was the whole point of this video, but then you threw a little curveball there at the end haha. Let me know!
    Rob

    • @ScruffyGolden
      @ScruffyGolden  Рік тому +1

      Hi Rob.
      It can be confusing, for sure. To order the dish as a first time Starlink user, you have to find a place to register an address. This can be your house, or it can be somewhere else. Once you have the dish, you are able to move the dish to other locations within certain restrictions. At the time this video was made, it could be WAY harder to buy a dish in a location than to buy the dish elsewhere and MOVE into that location. Even though a lot has changed since the video was made, that is still the case.
      If you don't have satellites overhead, not amount of moving the dish around will help. However, if your house is waitlisted, all you know for certain is that Starlink won't let you order a dish against that address. There is no way to know if it will work buying the dish elsewhere and then using it at your house. My comment was saying that, I would not go through the act of buying elsewhere and moving to your house if your only intentions are to use it at your house. If you are mobile, there will be places you can use it for sure. In that case, if it works at your house, great, but I wouldn't count on it.
      Now Starlink has portability and some other things going so there aren't as many unknowns -- especially if you are willing to pay more to remove those unknowns. (e.g. portability costs more per month).
      Hope this helps.

    Hi,
    I'm a little confused and maybe you can help assist. The closest location to me is Nevada, CA. If I order in NV, have it shipped to a UPS store in my city the description says "Service for this order is only guaranteed at this location. Service includes 1 TB of Priority Access and unlimited Basic Access starting in April 2023." does this mean I have to be in NV to set up starlink or can I do it at another location? (My neighbors have starlink, so I know it's available in my area)
    Thank you.

    • @ScruffyGolden
      @ScruffyGolden  Рік тому

      Hi Dorida. A LOT has changed since I made that video. In fact, Starlink made a huge change just two days ago. It used to be you could have your Starlink service registered at your house and then use it anywhere there was available service. People who are mobile (e.g. RV'ers) could register Starlink anywhere since they would use "portability" all of the time anyway. As of two days ago, that is no longer possible. You either need to select the RV service or the residential service. Portability is no longer an option for new customers. So you have to choose between the RV version which you can use anywhere, but is degraded service, or the residential service which MUST be used where it is registered.
      Probably not the answer you were hoping for, but I hope this clears up the confusion.

    I live in South Florida...on wait list since September 2021....last month I went into the Starlink and changed my location to an address in Utah. It confirmed my purchase and I had the Delivery address to my home in South Florida. received the dishy in 9 days. I set up the dishy and modem, changed the SERVICE location to So Florida from Utah and VOILA. Got connected. Neve went to Utah! I then moved my RV to Ocala, Fl 300 miles north of my home in So FL. VOILA...hooked up in 20 minutes. I then moved a few days later to just South of Atlanta. No Service when I changed my Service to location Atlanta address. I changed the SERVICE address back to Ocala and VOILA got service. Go figure?? I then returned to my home in So. Floridas. (website still showing Service not available in area). Plugged it in and VOILA got served! Lightning fast speeds.

      Hi Richard. I think you are experiencing Starlink's latest feature which is roaming. Until a few weeks ago, your ability to use Starlink was very tightly tied to your registered service address. With roaming, you can now wander from the service address. It sounds like you experienced that right out of the box. Congrats!!

Now it seems like you can use the Starlink service wherever it is available as long as you have the equipment and were able register your address somewhere. Even better, you no longer need to be at the registered address to activate it. Check out the following video for the latest. It will provide information that goes directly to your question.

    • @ScruffyGolden
      @ScruffyGolden  2 роки тому +1

      The answer to that is changing as we speak. Until recently, if you weren't very close to the registered address, the dish simply doesn't connect to anything. If Starlink has turned on your roaming, then you can be within a certain distance from the registered address and it will work. Apparently within miles will work and I know one person who got as far as 100 miles away from his registered address and it worked. Roaming for my service just came on this week. I'm hoping to do some testing this weekend to see the effects of this service firsthand. Stay tuned!

      You would have been just a few weeks ago, but you probably have roaming on now. If so, you can leave your address at your home and probably take your dish to the campsite without worry. You won't know if it's going to work until you get there, but that's one possibility if you are worried about losing your home location.

    I found your videos so helpful, thank you. I just have a questions or two about starlink. Im from Namibia a country in Africa, and wondered if I buy starlink in the states and take it to Namibia if it will be able to work. Namibia runs in the same latitude as Australia and I have seen on "live starlink satellite map" website, that there are satellite moving over Namibia. I have done some research and tried to chat to sales companies, but could not get any helpful information from them. Sartlink also don't have a great support service, where we can ask questions. I hope to hear from you.

    • @ScruffyGolden
      @ScruffyGolden  2 роки тому

      Hello Guilluame. If you purchase Starlink in the U.S., it has to be tied to an address in the U.S. If you turn on portability or mobility, you can use that dish on the same continent as the address. In other words, if you purchase the dish in the U.S. I don't think it will work in Africa. Furthermore, to my knowledge, service is not available in Africa so simply moving the dish there from outside of Africa would not work in that case either. In short, there are a couple of a reasons to think that wouldn't work. :-(

      You can, but keep in mind you would be paying the $110 monthly service fee regardless of whether you get connected or not. If you are in one location (i.e. not traveling with your Starlink), it could be a very long wait (measured in months or years) and would be an expensive paperweight. Furthermore, while waiting for the service to become available, the technology might change and/or improve. Starlink released it's second generation dish after only a little more than a year in operation. Some things to consider.

    Great info. I'm in central Mexico and ordered Starlink in early September last year, in anticipation of purchasing rural land.
    We are about to take possession of the land and I just got confirmation from Starlink, so I placed the order just this last Friday. Talk about timing, as the only other option there is cellular, but I don't know how reliable that would be even with a booster high up. The signal there is very spotty in and out.
    If I understand you correctly, I can only connect at the registered location, which in my case isn't even an address. I only entered the Google Plus link and GPS coordinates and then will have the equipment shipped to my house in the city 40 minutes from my rural property. So in other words, anytime you connect it has to be a registered address? Meaning, you'll have to change it for every move in an RV?

    • @ScruffyGolden
      @ScruffyGolden  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Andi.
      Wow you aren't kidding. That's awesome timing!
      Yup. The satellite only works at the location you have registered with Starlink so in order to use it somewhere else, you would have to change the location you have registered with Starlink. At the moment, it can be hard to find a place that has both satellite coverage and subscription slots available which makes changing that registered location a bit tricky.
      Starlink is reportedly working on an RV version of all this, but no one knows what it looks like, what kind of speeds, cost, etc. Sure would open up some amazing possibilities if/when they do this.
      Best wishes with your land purchase! -Scruffy

    Okay so I have a question. My mom ordered our starlink January 1st 2022. At first it said that Starlink is looking to expand in our area by mid 2022 to 2023. A month ago I put my address in again and it said "Order now to reserve your Starlink. Starlink is currently at capacity in your area, so your order may not be fulfilled until 2023 or later. You will receive a notification once your Starlink is ready to ship." Now if its in capacity than that has to mean that satellites are over in my area right? You see, I have a cousin that lives ten minutes away from me and he ordered his Starlink like February 2021 and finally got his in like October or November. If he can use his starlink where he lives and I live 10 minutes away, then can I order a starlink dish at his house, change the address to mine than have access to starklink? After all, he's only ten minutes away and it does say when I my put address in that starlink is in capacity in my area.

    • @ScruffyGolden
      @ScruffyGolden  2 роки тому

      Hi Rory. You are thinking through it correctly, but there is no guarantee that you will be able to change the address to your home. First, 10 minutes away is very close, I admit, but the edge of a Starlink cell could easily split the two locations so that he has service and you don't. The only way to know if you will be able to successfully move is to actually try it. This requires either ordering the equipment and trying it yourself or having someone like your cousin try it. Hi Richard,
    After paying a deposit I am tiered of being on the waiting list since March 22. I tried your technique of using an address of a cell 30 miles away and it gave me the option of ordering right away. I then tried to move my address from my account that has the deposit to that same location but it said I would have to wait until 2023. So I gambled and place an order that allowed me to purchase it and had it delivered to my home. It arrived yesterday in 10 days. I set it up to try it at my home and not going to the address 30 miles away. It was up and running in about 15 minutes. Question is should I move my address to my home where I’ve been waiting until mid to late 22 and will it continue to work if I do. I understand that roaming is best effort for service and service is only guaranteed at the registered address but roaming is way better then what I have with Verizon. My only option for guaranteed service is keeping my cue with the deposited account at my home address. Any suggestions? Thank You for all the great info.

      Hi Richard. I have been experimenting with roaming and, so far, I am not seeing a benefit in changing my registered address any longer. For example, lately I have not been seeing any change in speed or latency regardless of where my address is. Because of roaming, it is no longer risky to try moving your address around to see what works for you.

    The very end of this video brought up an interesting question for me. I have my $99 deposit into Starlink but I am in a very rural area and actually don't even have an address but Starlight recognized my 3/4 mile-long driveway as a road so I put that in as my address and based on their map, they put the pin in the middle of the driveway, which is several hundred feet away from the actual house. Based on the end of your video, now I'm wondering if that will be too far from my house to work. I didn't think it was that specific. Based on what you've seen, could it not work because they have the pin too far from my house? And if so (and I know I'm jumping ahead here), how would I fix that?

      The situation is rather fluid at the moment. This video was released before Starlink turned on roaming for everyone. At that time, it really was that specific. For the last couple of months, Starlink has allowed everyone to use the dish away from their registered address, but as of last week the rules are changing again. Starlink will continue to allow you to use the dish away from your registered address for $25 a month and with a few strings attached. Most people have called this "roaming" but Starlink has given it an official name: portability. Here is the most recent info:

    So I placed an order with shipping to my house and service address about 3.5 hours away. I have a coworker who lives about 2 miles (straight line) from me. His service works great. Do you know if I will be able to change the service address to my house prior to initial setup and set it up here or will I have to make that drive for initial setup? If I make the drive to set it up at the service address I picked, is there anyway to know for sure I will have service when I change my service address to my home.

    • @ScruffyGolden
      @ScruffyGolden  2 роки тому

      Hi John. If you were unable to register at your house initially, then it will probably not work at your house once you get the equipment. It's possible satellite coverage gets increased or something, but odds are against it. Having said that, it doesn't hurt to try. If there is no service at your house, Starlink will prevent you from using that address so that you don't lose your original location. You don't need to wait for your equipment to be delivered, either -- you can try changing your service address now, if you want. If you try to move the service to your house address and it works, great! If it doesn't, then there isn't much you can do about your house until Starlink expands coverage in your area. In this case, to bring the dish online, you will need to find a place that has subscription slots available where you can register your service, take your dish to that location and bring it online there. The only place where you it's guaranteed you can do that is the place you originally used with Starlink when you placed your order. If you find another, closer place, however, that lets you move your address to it, then you can bring the dish online there. Good luck!

    Bro, you are going thru wayyyyy too much trouble for this. I did this same thing back in October. All I did was order the equipment from a serviceable address just like you did and put the shipping address as my home address. When it got to me, I changed the service address and my cell isn't even opened yet but a cell next to me is. I changed the address to a random address in that cell, fired it up and it found service. No need to go directly to service address. You are making this too difficult when it is actually quite easy. Find service address that takes full order, ship to home address, change your address to an area that has service around you. If there isn't an area that has service around you, wait till there is. It's that simple man. No UPS store etc.

    • @ScruffyGolden
      @ScruffyGolden  2 роки тому

      Hello again. There is no way to know ahead of time unless someone (who has Starlink) tries it for you. The "capacity" answer usually means there's no room to move into the area unless someone moves out and vacates a spot. So it's not really a static thing. My experience has been that the odds of that happening go down substantially if the location is in a major metropolitan area. Sorry the answer isn't more precise.

    How does starlink work on the road if you can only use it at registered addresses?

    • @ScruffyGolden
      @ScruffyGolden  2 роки тому +1

      When you place an order, you have to use a physical address to which you attach the service. Once you've brought the dish online, however, you can change the address to a new location using (a) a physical address, or (b) a google plus code (which is kind of like gps coordinates). This assumes the place you are changing to has service in the form of a satellite overhead and a subscription slot available. This last weekend I was outside of the Great Sand Dune National Park... literally out in the middle of miles of sand... where there are no addresses whatsoever. I simply moved my last location to the new google plus code and it worked brilliantly. Starlink is supposedly working on an RV/mobile friendly version but we'll have to see what that looks like when/if it comes out.

      In this case, you have to have internet access (like cell phone network) to change your service address correct? Or plan ahead and change the service address to where you will be going, when you do have coverage. Is this correct?

    • @ScruffyGolden
      @ScruffyGolden  2 роки тому

      Hi Tylee. It's true. You have to have data (cell phone with network or wifi) in order to access the website and change your address. This does presume you know where you are going, which is not always the case. I think that is what you getting at, right? It's an astute observation. Here's another little nut that caught me off guard. When there is no service but the dish can see the sky, it puts the dish flat to the sky -- which is perpendicular to the pole. In that configuration it is as unwieldy to store as possible. You can't put the dish in storage mode (flat and parallel with the pole) until you get to a service location either. :-) It seems you thought it out. I had to figure it out the hard way. heheh

      SpaceX does't release a cell map, but they seem to be concentrating farther north (in North America). I know when I was plugging in locations, I couldn't find ANYTHING south of KS that I could use to place an order. I'm not saying they weren't there, just that I couldn't find them. Also, you don't HAVE to ship it to the address where you place the order. You can ship it anywhere, including your home. You just won't be able to bring the service online unless, of course, you are able to register service at your home. Also, I may have unintentionally mislead you with my first reply. Once your dish ships, I believe you can change the address without necessarily bringing the dish online. My point was that you can't set it up or "activate" it unless the dish is near the registered, serviceable, address. Hope that helps.

      The more precise answer is that once you get the equipment, you will have more options than you are given when placing an order. Whether you will be able to change the service address to your home is only known if you do this or have someone who has the equipment try for you. All I can say for certainty is that there are many locations where Starlink won't let you place an order, but where you are able to move your service address into. Whether your home or specific location is one of these, totally depends on the location itself.

Hopefully you won't have to wait much longer. can u check a address for me?

    • @ScruffyGolden
      @ScruffyGolden  2 роки тому

      I think you are asking to check a location that can be moved into. If so, the only way I know of to do that is to move my registration to the address you want me to check. If I do that, and it goes through, there's a good chance that I won't be able to switch it back to the original location. If you are asking about an address in general, you can go to the www.starlink.com and check any address without committing to anything. This video can show you how to do that. Sorry I can't be of more help. Good luck!

    I saw a video where a person mounted a tesla dish flat onto his car's roof & it had the dish working perfectly.
    Oh man, if I was in the army I would pay for a bunch of roof rack mounts to be built to be mounted on some humvees, and jerry rig a camera system to do some live streaming through some app like Twitch for some adhoc military application.
    I would then have bunch of buddies live stream as they drive around some military base within the USA such as where they store unused humvees, and show my commander who could see several live streams in operation at the same time on a large TV monitor. A good way to accelerate a rank promotion in my opinion.
    You could apply that technology to a military ambulance for peace keeping operations in undeveloped nations where American doctors would help poor rural people, or have something like a khan academy class room setup that uses a laptop cart. Once again, very likely you could fast track promotions.
    Musk should be working on deployable class room solutions such as a kit that would include tesla solar panels. Especially with the whole drama over Twitter.

    Good videos. Very useful. Thanks. For my sailboat in Ventura County, California I spent $700 on a cellular booster antenna, cables etc. With the antenna 30 feet up my spinnaker halyard, I went from LTE two bars to..... 5G two bars.... and using my iPhone as a hotspot made the connection on my computer a little more consistent, but just as slow. 240dpi. Whoopdedoo (say it slow and flat.)
    I asked my dock mates what they did. Starlink. Even though I'm a nerd, Tesla investor (I drove the cellular booster in my Model Y... I didn't even consider it thinking I'd have to wait years. They already had it on their decks.
    I got it in a week. Plugged it in, had the typical tech hassles ( _Gee Dad, you're kind of stupid..._ Oh yeah, who's the 30 year old Steve Jobs? Thought so.)
    The best part is my dock mates sail off the coast to the Channel Islands 11 nMiles to 50. They can sometimes keep a signal for part of the trip out, sometimes it drops. But at anchor they report that it works great, and everyone anchored around them loves them (when they share their WiFi password. I need more information before I do that here at the dock.)
    Now I've got to get my $99 deposit back... And if it works at my house in Los Angeles (still a no go area) then maybe I can get rid of Spectrum $70/month.

      I can see where it might seem like that. For those who are mobile it might not be that much work. I know I planned mine so it was on the way to another destination. Also, I think SpaceX is trying to get things going as fast as they can but can only get so many satellites into orbit at a time. It's a pain right now, I admit, but I also appreciate that SpaceX is trying to protect the experience for those who can get it.

    First don't say that Starlink is "great" for the people on the road when it's very hard to have to change address in order to get connection in any new location...! And even that only works in the States...!

    • @ScruffyGolden
      @ScruffyGolden  2 роки тому +1

      It used to be hard to change the address but recent changes to the Starlink website late last year make it very easy to change the address. If a person is willing to drive to places where Starlink is available, the change is easy and takes affect almost immediately. Are you in a country where that is not the case? I know changing the address works in Canada and the U.S. but don't know firsthand about any other countries. Let me know! Thanks for watching! P.S. Love the music on your channel! Did you compose those?

      @@ScruffyGolden HI...as I know is not possible to travel from Canada to the States and change your "address" they don't allow country changes...
      Here in Europe to be honest I don't know... I only have one of my clients with Starlink...and he gave up on he service just 3 months after he brought it...finally he got himself a fibre on his "far away" home...and now Starlink won't allow him to re sell his equipment to a friend...They say that the swap program is only valid in US and Canada...So, 600€ to the garbage can.
      About the music on my Channel...Well I'm a DJ and also a Booking Agency for Psychedelic electronic music artists...the music set's are mine, and the tracks are from friends and artists from my Agency.
      Thank you for your comment!

      Hi Big Chill. I didn't know about not allowing country changes. That's good to know because I regularly head north into Canada and was planning to give things a try up there. Sounds like that won't work, so thank you!! That stinks that SpaceX is not consistent across the countries they serve. Thank you for checking back in!

    Does this mean they caught on and are putting an end to this? Put in an address in Nebraska and this is what it says "116 E K St, McCool Junction, NE 68401, USA
    Service for this order is only guaranteed at this location."

    • @ScruffyGolden
      @ScruffyGolden  2 роки тому +1

      Starlink has had that message for as long as I can remember. It is a disclaimer that says Starlink isn't promising more than service at the location you hvae registered. Having said that, Starlink is allowing people to roam with their dish, now.
