Took 14 months for my parents to receive it. It is really really good. They live in a remote northern Canadian community. It's a game changer. They have the fastest internet for 100 miles around. I messed around with it all Easter weekend. It works flawlessly. Speeds between 30 and 90mpbs on the wifi depending how far from the router you are. 130-160 from the dish to router. It's not fibre but it beats capped 1.5mbps radio tower internet.
I'm a jewelry artist and a Nomad and this is what I have pined for for awhile. Considering how far we have come with our technologies it's amazing to be alive now. Thank you for your video.
Thank you Shaun. I am glad you found it useful. I couldn't agree more. It is a GREAT time to be alive. Being able to work on the road and in the woods is one of the most amazing things there is.
I have been using it in Maine and it beats all expectations. I dont even have my dish in a good spot its basically aimed right at a tree and its working just flawless.
It's funny you say that. I am camping in Kentucky right now and my dish decided for itself that the best location was right through a tree as well -- the only tree in my location. lol! It's working great though!
I live in China Grove NC and I’m in a dark green location and I got my Starlink on the 9th of April. I’ve been getting 170-210 down and between 9-70 up. I’m pretty impressed.
@@ScruffyGolden It’s registered in the dark green. I went on the website after watching your video and seen it in the dark green and then I went to place another order for one to see what it said and it said something along the lines of there was too many units already allocated for my Area and to order one I would have to be put on a waiting list until they had more for this area if I wanted one.
Six days from order to shipping!! We are out in the middle of nowhere TX. We had fiber in Central FL and it sucked, frequent outages and slow downs, even at its worst Starlink is at least as good and its semi portable. Cost is a little higher up front and monthly is slightly higher but worth it for reliability.
Roaming seems to be automatically enabled now when you leave your service address cell. This means you don't need to change your service address anymore. However I have experienced very brief (30 seconds) outages which the app indicated as due to roaming outside my service cell.
I live in Tucson AZ on the far west side and just got mine after a 13 month wait even though it’s still in the dark green section of the map. It seems as though they are giving priority to the rural areas of the country (out of reach of hi speed WiFi service) as most of the urban areas are on the waitlist. This makes sense as the urban areas have more internet options. Thank you for the video!
I’m in a really urban area, but at the end of an old 70’s/80’s subdivision with only Comcast. Fiber is all around us, but not on this street. Starlink still isn’t available here, either. 🙄
I live in a "rural area" in South Alabama (Robertsdale) and am still listed as a waiting zone. I live 2 miles from an UpLink Station and my address is listed as "sorry you are in the waiting list zone". BS
I signed up on the day Starlink allowed sign ups and my brother-in-law signed up about 5 months after. I fell into the "move your location 100 feet" bug about 4 months ago and now I'm on a waiting list till mid-this year and my brother-in-law who lives a mile from me has had Starlink for about 2 months now. Gotta love it... :/
So helpful, Starlink should link to your content here! Awesome, thanks. I am moving to Bolivia next month, i will try to put an order for starlink there. See what happens!
As of today that New Mexico dark green "box" has essentially gone away. The state shows much more light green coverage. Also, I have had SL for about 1.5 years at this point and I'm in one of the dark green areas of New Mexico. Glad I was able to get it.
So you were able to get service in a non service area? Im willing to buy but if it is completely not working thats an issue. If its just working better than dsl Ill take it.
@@joebobjenkins7837 I got service pretty early on with Starlink right at the beginning of even the beta phase. So at that point there was no nifty map to show what was and wasn’t service area. People were trying to “estimate” it but that’s the best there was. So I can’t say I was able to get it in a “non-service” area. I just put in my request and they said yes. :-)
Take another look at Australia, the southern part of Australia is mostly bright green except a small patch of dark green in the South West. But the north of Australia is black! That's where I live, I applied for a service months ago and paid my AU$139 but have no service yet. I have a ground station in my cell and my position acquires up to 5 satellites never less than 1?
Hi Robert. I was a little broad with my comment, but I was under the impression that almost everyone lived in the southern half. I should have been more precise in what I said. Ironically, I made the opposite mistake with that same comment in Canada! Have you been given any estimate on how long you will have to wait?
Mine just came on this week. Looking forward to testing it this weekend! Right now I am 33 miles from my registered location and it is working pretty well. I say "pretty well" because my download speeds are as good as ever (~200 mbs) download but my upload is really low -- about 1mbs. More this weekend...
I played with both to see what would happen. I even drove 45 miles away from my registered address to see what would happen. Both versions worked great!
That's a long wait and very interesting. So you are getting Dishy today but your location is still a dark green cell? I wonder if Starlink is fulfilling your order with a subscription slot, or if new satellites went into position and just filled up that fast after filling orders. Hope it comes today!!
I ordered my kit in feb 2021. I live in Hawaii. It’s on the map. No news when I’ll get it. Customer service sucks. How do I actually talk to someone with questions
Thank you for the advice. IT WORKED, I changed my service location a few miles away and a minute k r so later I was notified that I need to pay the balance and complete the order and if I did not in aboute a week or two my order would be canceled and my deposit would be refunded to my card. So make sure you are ready to pay the balance. I did have to try several locations in the areas that were supposed current active service areas but still near my actual service location. Thank you
I got my Starlink about four months ago. My place is New York's Catskill mountain range, southeast of Hunter Mountain. It wasn't until I saw the availability map that I realized how close I am to a wait area. There's a wait area only about three miles east of my address. By the way, the Starlink was extremely easy to set up and I get great service.
Hey, here's a little trick I did a year ago to get Starlink. I used a 'service address' in an open cell, and I used my billing address as my normal home address. Got me a dishy long before they were available in my area. I used the nearest available coordinates (google plus code) to get it set up, as this actually makes a difference in how / if your service will work. The address I used was 7 miles from my home, and it worked great. your mileage may vary.
Same here. I'm in a dark green area in southern Oregon in the mountains and got mine in Feb, 2021 and consistently got speeds around 100 to 150 Mbps but since premium was announced my speeds dropped to 30 to 80 Mbps. Seems throttled now and no response from Starlink.
You videos are game changers! I should have my equipment this week and plan to activate in an area of KY that won't allow me to order my service for but I can move to it. These videos have been a huge help getting me as remote I need to be and have the ability to work while I'm there a year before I thought would be a possibility. Keep them coming !!
Looking for advice on my situation. I am in northern Arizona and ordered mine in June 2021. Initially told to expect service by the end of 2021, then it changed to mid 2022, yet I know of 2 people within 15 miles of me who have had it since early 2021. Now that I see the map, I see that I am about 8 miles from the edge of a light green area. Now my question is, do I change my service address to one in the light green 10 miles away from me and hope it works at my house? If it doesn't, I'll be paying for service for months possibly without being able to use it. Is it worth the risk? Oh, and I did pay my $99 deposit in June 2021.
I live in Fortuna CA. It is Dark Green on the map. I have Starlink in Fortuna CA and it works great. I suspect that this area is fully subscribed which is why it is not marked "Unavailable" but "Waitlist".
You stated that Starlink is fiber optic quality service. That is quite an exaggeration, as someone that works with fiber (enterprise) and coax (business/residential) service. It is indeed low-latency (
I'm just north of Berea KY. Just received my STARLINK dish on Friday April 15 2022. Had been on waitlist since it started. Starlink web map still shows us in the dark. So what I'm thinking is that the dark areas have service, but are close to capacity for that area. BTW I absolutely love the STARLINK service so far. Thanks for the video.
Hi James. I think you are right. There are sites that show the location of Starlink satellites and for the longest time Kentucky was just blank. Absolutely nothing even close. Service has started coming online in KY but like you said, capacity seems to be in short supply. I'm headed to southern KY this weekend. Am hoping roaming works down there but my prospects don't look good :-)
Thanks for the great video. I am down the road from in Florissant, CO and just checked on the map. I have been signed up for a year and got the message that I will have service later this year. Looking at the map, Victor has service. Do you have a suggestion for “obtaining” an address? Do I check a campground, or National Forest……just not quite sure. Then, how far do I have to go to see if I can move? Or, just order equipment, then wait until I can move it? Then I would at least have the equipment. Hmmmmmm, just lots to think about. Again, thanks!
Hi Garry. Florissant/Eleven Mile is one of my favorite places in CO! Forgive me for throwing a video at you, but this video has more info on finding an address than I can type: ua-cam.com/video/xyoMBEo7jt4/v-deo.html At this point, once you have the equipment, you can simply use it in a national forest. You probably don't even have to change your address any more (as of only a few weeks ago). Good luck!
@@ScruffyGolden Scruffy, thanks!! But I need something here at home. I now telework, our house was just finished up here (our forever home), and we have been living in an rv for 8 months using only hotspot. Luckily my work doesn’t involve high data usage!!! Will check the video out and again thanks!!
My account had Roaming - True last month and dish would work anywhere I set it up....but now Roaming -False and back to changing Service Address for each location....hoping they make Roaming a permanent feature soon.
That's the first I've heard of it getting turned off once it was on. So far mine hasn't turned on so I haven't had a chance to play with that. I hope it becomes permanent soon as well!
Hi Jerry. Since I last wrote, I've had a chance to play with the roaming firsthand and I think I have some good news for you. That "Roaming = true/false" in the Debug Data section seems to indicate whether you are actually USING roaming, not whether Starlink has given it to you. The fact that you can see it at all means Starlink has turned it on for you! When I am using Starlink at my registered address, Roaming = false because I am technically not roaming. As soon as. I wander a few miles away that flag flips to true! You are good to wander about the cabin!
I'm not a satellite expert, but I think the fact that these are low orbit satellites reduces the amount of ground they can cover compared to higher orbit satellites?
Fantastic!!! Hopefully is right! I've heard a lot of people say the recent time estimates (after December 2021) have been pretty good so I think you are close! Hope'n for ya.
Subaru in Canada have a mobile subscription option, wife's it. Signed up for the home in October 21 hadn't installed for Xmas day. Tech is there, government permissions are not perhaps, or just not in the US at least maybe?
@@ScruffyGolden it is starlink....the mobile version in the wife's car and the standard at the house, 2 systems, both starlink. So...yup work as good as starlink 🤔
So I preordered back in mid February 2021... my location is dark green 🙄 it says my area is dark green but It says on my account I should get my kit q2 2022. Does it mean I have to wait even longer? I have already been waiting for 15 months and they delayed my preorder by 6 months already. Bullshit they take your money and prioritize people who ordered AFTER you!
Great video! I used this map to see where I could get service and I found out that there was an open cell 6 miles away from my where I needed it. I picked a random service location and I moved it outside of the open cell and It’s working great without an issue.
Also can you explain a little more about moving out of my location when I go camping and then moving back in? I thought we lose our service when we try to move back in.....
Sure! Starlink guarantees service at the address you registered with them. Every location must have both satellite coverage as well as subscription slots (capacity) available. If there isn't sufficient coverage, Starlink prevents you from moving your address into that location. If you DO successfully change your address to a new location, it's possible others will take the spot you vacated and fill up that area. If you try to move back to your original location, but there is no longer capacity, Starlink will prevent you from moving you address again. In this way, it's possible to move away and be unable to move back.
Love the video, but I don't own a starlink yet , I would love to get one earlier as you posted your video on how to do so. But I don't know if I can get service if I moved services. Can you check for me before making the jump?
Ok, I need help understanding. My area is dark green. We’re rural and really need Starlink. My mom is in the next state over and totally in the light green. Can I change my address to hers and have her ship the equipment to me? Would I be able to get it working where I live? What am I missing?
I'm sorry, I don't know. How do you know that satellites cover the area? I can only refer to the Starlink map, but north africa looks dark near as I can tell.
Hi Deborah. It would take quite a while to explain that in a comment. There are two videos that should answer most of your questions (hopefully all). If not, ask away and I'll do my best! 10 Questions about Roaming: ua-cam.com/video/3sIrk4ZpO90/v-deo.html Starlink Portability Explained: ua-cam.com/video/EbeeBkDrtvY/v-deo.html Hope this helps.
When it comes to placing an order, the cells are pretty accurate. The question is whether you'd be able to move into that area if you had the equipment. If you know someone who already has the equipment and doesn't mind, you can ask them to try moving to your location. If it works, you can check out my "Starlink in a 1 Week" video to figure out how to put the pieces together. Not much anyone can do if that doesn't work. :-(
So what happens if I float between 2 houses? One in the statlink map one outside. Do I just order to the house with service and bring it down to the unavailable area when Im there? Does the map just show where they wont send a unit or is there absolutely no service in the darker blue areas?
Technically speaking the dark blue areas, as you noted, have no service of any kind. The map is definitely better than no map (which was the case not so long ago), but is not super precise. Sometimes the only way to know what will work is to get the dish/service and try it out in your particular circumstances. There is a 30 day return if it doesn't fit what you are looking for.
Another question, since I have an order placed with a deposit, should I cancel that order or just change the service address if I do have it sent to my daughters house?
Hi Donna. If I understand you question correctly... The shipping and the service address are two separate, unrelated things. In other words, where the equipment is shipped shouldn't have a bearing on whether to cancel your order or not. It's hard to answer the question of whether you should cancel your existing order or not. If you are very mobile and want to use it, say, in an RV as you travel around the country, you could use the map in this video to choose places that have service and use your Starlink there, for instance. If you are using it at your house, and not going anywhere, the question is harder to answer. Personally I would try to find a friend who has Starlink who would be willing to try changing their address to yours. If it works, then you know you can get the equipment any way you can and change the address into your location. If you don't have such an acquaintance, you would have to decide how much trouble you want to go through to try it out. The worst case scenario is that you get the equipment from somewhere else, receive the equipment, try to change the address to your location, and then it fails. At that point you have 30 days to return all of the equipment for a full refund. Failing all of this, there is not much that can be done except sit tight and wait for the satellite coverage to catch up. One last note. If you are in a major metropolitan area, I've yet to see anything work except sitting tight. Hope that helps. -Scruffy
I want to know also! Worse, I want to spend more time in Las Cruces but will wait a while longer because of that. It looks more like that is just a hole in the satellite coverage than an over-capacity issue, but it IS weird, right? Does anyone reading this know?
I'm just outside the Austin TX area, clearly in the dark green on the map, I have been on the waiting list since june 2020, and just received my invite to order last week. I was given 7 day to complete the order, or my deposit would be automatically refunded and I lose my spot. so it seems they are allowing some orders in the dark green areas, will be interesting to see what level of service I am able to get
That IS interesting. It is so awesome to hear people get theirs after waiting so long. June 2020 might be the longest I've heard someone wait. You were in REALLY early!
This map appears to be limited by the availability of regional ground links to the satellite net. I takes a lot of strategically located ground stations to keep the satellites functional.
it is the backbone to the internet in those areas. can build a cell tower , downlink etc but if no connection or not a good enough connection still limits the speed. lots of places have hi speed internet cables going down the highways but they are going to towns not the rural area around the highways. have worked in the industry for years and this is the biggest problem. no place for starlink in my area to download to as it is already saturated. worked in the the industry for awhile and it is sad how much it is all about money even though they are supposed to follow permits. get funding. etc. and still twenty years behind. was laughing at a commercial the other day about comcast/xfinity upgrading service and how many customers added. it was only because of the area being filled with apartments but had nothing to do with the people 5 miles away still with no real internet.
Hello 100Million. I'm sorry, I don't understand your question. Are you referring to roaming (did I say "mobile" in the video?). If you are referring to mobile, you do not need to turn it on as Starlink will turn it on in the background automatically. The reason this is a big deal is that, until a few weeks ago, you would only be able to use your Starlink service at your registered service address. With roaming, you are able to take the dish and use the service in locations outside of your service area.
@@ScruffyGolden I been with starlink for 4 months and in my debug my mobile is still turned off. But what I meant was this, if I lives in location a and I move my starlink camping to location B 300 Mi away, when I come back to location a I've heard that I might have to wait in line to get my service turned back on.
@@100Milllion Just guessing here, But I think when it says "mobile" that means your dish is now operating outside your home area but you should have no problem when you return to your home address. Now if you change your address to access service somewhere you may not be able to change it back if your home area fills up while you are away. I'm assuming that when a cell becomes congested, dishes that are "mobile" will get kicked off so that home users keep getting good service. Well that's what makes sense to me anyway.
Just was shipped the service for my remote cabin in a dark green area. I have been on the waiting list for over a year and a half. I haven't had a chance to get there and activate the service yet but planning on it soon. Once I do from that remote location and I want to activate it in one of the light green areas, such as a road trip, will I have an issue activating it back in the dark green original location?
Hi Rob. That is always a scary unknown. If capacity is tight, it's possible someone will vacate the spot you leave behind and prevent you from returning to that location. It's very location dependent. Here's some good news, though. You might try taking your dish on the road trip and seeing if it works. Roaming was just turned on for everyone (see my most recent video for details) and you might be able to leave your registered location alone and simply use the dish in the new location. If you do this, and don't mind, let me know if it works and how far away!
To use it within the registered service location, yes, 10 miles would fall outside of that by a long shot. Starlink did release portability last week which might work for you, but probably only short term? Not sure of your specific situation, but this video might help: ua-cam.com/video/EbeeBkDrtvY/v-deo.html
Great information. I do wonder what you mean by "fiber optic quality", however. The performance is fantastic for a space based ISP, but it is quite a bit below what I think most people would consider FO quality. I'm looking forward to getting this for my RV. Cell connections are too unreliable. We sometimes end up somewhere we don't have cell coverage adequate for our planned usage. I'm having a little trouble justifying the cost, however, for the limited amount of travelling we currently do. My family also has a beach house in Baja. I wonder if I could take it down there when we visit. Can Starlink be configured to work as a seamless backup to a home network WAN connection, such as provided by a cable company? If the Starlink router is anything like Tesla products, like my Powerwall 2, it won't allow any type of user customization. This would make it harder to justify for my intended use case. One way of doing it would be to find out if someone can have their home router connected and functioning normally with the Starlink router as the ISP. I recognize that one would need to purchase the ethernet adapter to make this work more easily. I'd like to see if anyone has tried that with the new hardware. Also, I was an extensive experimenter with DirecTV back in the day. Eventually, DirecTV decided to charge customers for the hardware, but retain ownership of it, limiting their customer's rights. Does Starlink do the same? That is, if I were to shell out $500+ for the hardware and didn't end up wanting it, could I sell it to someone else? I have a feeling that any company associated with Tesla would say , 'no'.
So I totally misspoke. I meant to say fiber optic "speeds" not quality. As you point out, Starlink is definitely not fiber optic quality. To your second point, if I were trying to do that, I would put the Starlink router in bridge (pass through) mode, which you can do, and use my own router. As for selling the hardware, I don' t know the answer to that firsthand, but I've heard of people buying the equipment in a downstream market, but unable to use it. I don't know any of the details of those situations though.
@@ScruffyGolden Thanks for your clarification on being able to put it in bridge mode. My router is able to support multiple WAN connections, so I could help justify the purchase as a backup for our home cable internet connection. Now if I could quite paying for all these recent vehicle repairs maybe I can get the money together and order one! Do you have to ask to have roaming mode enabled?
To my knowledge there's no knowing. Sometimes the cells are spot on with their accuracy, and sometimes the edges are a little fuzzy, and sometimes you can go deeply in the dark green.
Ok I get it, the map is a awesome tool to see where you're going to get reception. Won't it be more convenient if one could buy this on an e-mail address and maybe proof of banking details?
Hi Marius. The demand for Starlink is far outpacing Starlink's ability to create capacity so some of this, at least, is Starlink trying to protect the experience of those who have Starlink until everybody can be covered. The map specifically shows where you can place an order and only kinda shows where one can get reception.
One possibility is that Starlink could be filling orders when subscription slots become available and you were at the front of the line. It could also mean that your area just got new additional satellite coverage but the website hasn't caught up that information or that the additional coverage wasn't enough to fulfill all of the outstanding orders. One thing I do know, however, Starlink guarantees service at the location you registered so whatever it means, you will have functioning Starlink soon. Congratulations!!
I really don't understand it either, but on some level plus codes give every spot on the earth a physical address. I know plus codes are also open source so maybe Starlink used them simply because they could? Not sure...
Elon, could you pry your self awayfrom Twritter for a day or so and see if you can do something about the BACKORDER/SHORTORAGE on the EATHERNET ADAPTORS for STARLINK, I waited 14 months to get my system and now I can't use it without the EATHERNET ADAPTOR.
Do I understand you correctly that I can order Starlink and get it quickly if I use an address that is in light green and have it shipped to an address that is dark green but as far as its use in concerned, it won't work in dark green areas unless you're close to the edge of a dark green/light green area and if it doesn't work, I still pay the monthly cost?
It's hard to know your exact situation from a distance. I can say that you will get the equipment quickly if you order in a light green area and you will be paying the monthly fee whether it works or not. I can also say that you will be able to return the equipment within 30 days for a full refund it things don't work the way you expected/wanted them to. As for whether it will work on the edge of a cell or at a specific location is impossible to say. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Sorry I can't be more positive or precise.
So I just found starlink. And I'm in Adamsville TN 38310..Where there is a year waiting list. So if I put in an address where it's green you can get it almost right away. So if so do I just use someone else's address to get it faster and put my address for the shipping...like I used to live in Lubbock TX. And it's all green there. I could use a friends address there. Thanks for any info.
Hi Summit Dave. I could ready your post a few different ways and I don't want to mislead you. Shipping and order or unrelated, so regardless of what address you place the order under, you can have the equipment shipped anywhere you want. Until recently it was a hard, fast rule that you could only use the dish/service at the location you registered with Starlink. So if you registered your Lubbock address in Starlink, you would have to use the service there. In the last few weeks Starlink has turned on something called Roaming that might change that picture, but for now, that is the safest way to understand it. Hope that helps.
@@ScruffyGolden Thanks. Sorry if I didn't explain that right. But I think u got it right. Far as shipping..Just to get it faster. I heard someone say. That you can't suspend your subscription. And then turn it back on at anytime. Something like you have to buy the package again. You know anything about that. Thanks
To my knowledge you can't suspend the service temporarily. I haven't heard what happens if you cancel and try to start it up again. Interesting question....
My service is activated at the "order" (shipping) address which was just a mile or so Northwest of our town, but is definitely NOT in the light green. Must have fallen under the "close enough by zip code or close enough by Google Maps" to access the service. Certainly not an oversold area, I'm early in adopting it here. The service is mostly stable, sometimes competitive with Spectrum's business-level, sometimes not but almost always working, and able to deliver streaming to multiple TVs while surfing the web on another machine, and...unlike my former DSL backup to my work apartment, which it replaced, Starlink doesn't mind email sent from private domains. My DSL would reject outgoing mail in outlook! Happy so far, enjoying it with ethernet adapter in place, but using existing internal router, and running an access point from the ethernet adapter to serve larger area than where the Starlink modem is located. The small dropouts now and then that the Starlink app shows are not a problem to most streaming thanks to buffering. Thanks for the video!
And thanks for the info! I have a form of DSL at my house and still can't use Starlink there. It blows my mind that I can be in the middle of nowhere and get better quality internet than at my house or office. Love it!
@@ScruffyGolden Take a look at the Michigan map today! It has changed since my reply above. It used to show coverage just "near" my town. Last few days, unless I read it wrong, most of the Lower Penninsula is NOT in coverage, but the Upper Penninsula is. Yet, my service has improved especially in latency...now running 22 to 37 ms average....but the map would have you believe it's not a "primary service" area. I find this rather interesting, and wonder if it's oversight, or if we're too "populated" with available ground ISP's to be of much interest now. Will be very interesting when I install a unit in Muir, MI to our East by aout 7 miles which shipped to a buddy about two weeks ago. (He's been too busy to have me come put it in.) Also: an external access point running both 2.4 and 5 gig added on to version 2 with the ethernet adapter work WONDERFULLY without disabling internal router, since I don't need "extra" routing capabilities. A point I had not seen anyone address yet. I put the AP on channels NOT used by the main router so effectively there are now (4) ways to latch on to Starlink. Enjoy!
Looks to me like most anywhere there is internet availability Starlink in not. My guess there is probably some kind of payoff needs to be made by Starlink to gain access to those areas. Why else would a satellite signal not work in populated areas?
Its number of customers in those areas. The number of satellites in orbit sets the global saturation limit for each cell and number of existing customers sets saturation limit for each cell. Its more complicated then that but that basically explains why some areas are dark and some are not.
You comment about Canada is wrong. While most of Canada is bright green on the map, nobody lives there. Most Canadians live in the dark green blob of southern Ontarion. Toronto (and surrounds), Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, and Winnipeg all appear to be dark green. That would be about 90% of the Canadian population.
@@ScruffyGolden What is really weird is the dark green/light green border along the Canada/Alaska border. It looks like all of Alaska is dark green and just across the border in Canada it is light green. It seems to show they don't have detailed information about Alaska.
Also what is really weird is the dark green dots in northern Manitoba and north western ontario. There are no roads into those spots. Those are mining or other locations that will have winter road access only.
I'm in one of the dark green areas ... and just got my starlink. So the dark green doesn't mean you can't place an order and it doesn't mean it doesn't work ... I'm not sure what it does mean. But I ordered one, got it and it works great.
As long as it works, that's all that matters! The dark green is *_supposed_* to mean that you can't place an order there, but Starlink mentions that the maps is only approximate so ... Enjoy!
@@ScruffyGolden I should have mentioned - my starlink was on order for about a year. I have fiber gigabit on my homestead in the country … but as a software engineer I’ve been desperately wanting one of these - I’ll let you know how the roaming works. Planning to try it on my RV and then my sailboat in the Atlantic off the south east coast.
Hi Fondel. Roaming is proving to be absolutely fantastic. Lately I am not even seeing a reduction in speeds (or latency) even when my registered address is thousands of miles away.
Hi Bill. If you are trying to receive the equipment out there, I made a video EXACTLY for that situation that will absolutely help! ua-cam.com/video/xyoMBEo7jt4/v-deo.html
Hi showier. I don’t remember at the moment. I think it was a gift from my wife. I’m traveling right now but I’ll check the brands when I get home and let you know. My wife will be thrilled! Lol
Ah! Good question! Usually satellite internet and VPNs don't play well together, but a quick look on Uncle Google shows people are having good luck with NordVPN and Webroot's VPN. I have not verified this myself, but initial prospects look good!
I need Starlink. I cannot rely on South African companies offering ISPs. I'm a blockchain developer, I can't rely on any South African Telecom. Not a single one. Far too much incompetence and corruption within our corporate ranks. I need a Starlink dish. These South Africans will harm my ability to fend for myself if I must continue relying on a bunch of wannabe mafia ppl. I encourage all young savvy South Africans to completely abandon anything our nation offers. Completely abandon it, bet against the economy. Never bet for it. Guareenteed to ruin everything they bloody touch! Guareenteed! 😤
6:51 - Really, that is only half the country of Australia, and the part that isnt covered is the part of the country with the worse connectivity available.
Understood but maybe you can help me/us with this: how many people live in that area? We have been led to believe that is where everyone goes to make off-road videos but that the land is essentially uninhabitable and that no one lives there as a result. I’m exaggerating only slightly…
@@ScruffyGolden it's okay, as a resident of the Northern Territory we are used to being passed over, the current coverage misses locations such as Cairns, Darwin, Broome, Alice Springs (and Uluru). You are correct there is a whole lot of not much in the middle of the country...
I gave up on Starlink back in February after waiting a year and getting no updates at all until the end of last year when my long past mid-2021 estimate magically became mid-2022. It was clear that Starlink had no idea when I might get service so I got my deposit back. And anyone who thinks Starlink provides “optical fiber quality” service has no clue what optical fiber service is like. Starlink is barely comparable to Spectrum cable in my area. Spectrum is providing a pretty consistent 80-100 Mbps with low latency. Fiber will provide 1 Gbps all day long. Not even in the same league.
Hello William. To my knowledge you can't turn roaming on and off, it's something that Starlink turns on for your account in the background. Having said that, mine came on this week! I hope to go out this weekend to do some testing. Will show you the results as soon as I have them!
@@ScruffyGolden there is a video of a Canadian that drove down the highway getting signal. The roaming had aparently been turned on due to Ukraine. Will see if I can find it.
Hi William. I played with roaming on my service all weekend and it worked spectacularly! Roaming was also turned on out of the box for a friend of mine and it worked great for her too. Starlink services seem to be changing by the month!
To be honest, that hadn't occurred to me. Would you find that useful? If anyone would find this useful, please hit the thumbs up on this comment. Am happy to do a video on that subject. Thanks for the feedback!
Hello BigFoot. I'm not a gamer myself so I don't know firsthand, but I suspect the latency is a problem for heavy gamers in most cases. You might check me on that, though.
Hey everyone. The map itself starts at *5:22*
Thank god. Skipping the massive rant about digital nomads is required because it doesnt apply to most people...
Thank you .....it saved me so much time.
Hi Alex. You sure you skipped it? :-)
Bless you 😊
Bless you 😊
Took 14 months for my parents to receive it.
Thanks for sharing. Especially in remote areas like that, it's utterly exceptional. Glad they were able to get it!
Consider yourself lucky. I'm going on 15months of waiting.....
So glad it worked for you in a dark green spot! Is your registered address in that dark green spot? Or are you roaming?
@@ScruffyGolden It’s registered in the dark green. I went on the website after watching your video and seen it in the dark green and then I went to place another order for one to see what it said and it said something along the lines of there was too many units already allocated for my Area and to order one I would have to be put on a waiting list until they had more for this area if I wanted one.
And sorry yes my Address is registered in the dark green.
Did you get it using your true address?
@@TomBTerrific yea I used my true address. I placed my order maybe just over a year ago. I’m glad I got it and it works good.
I agree!
That's not an issue with Fiber but with your provider.
Roaming seems to be automatically enabled now when you leave your service address cell. This means you don't need to change your service address anymore. However I have experienced very brief (30 seconds) outages which the app indicated as due to roaming outside my service cell.
roaming is definitely kicking and it is SOO nice not to fight an address change!
You are very welcome!
This is good news as we are moving to Tucson
Oh wow. That's probably the most extreme version I've heard so far. Ugh. Sorry.
I have been signed up since feburary 2021 and still waiting.
I live in a area still listed as a wait listed area here in WV and got my Starlink last week after about 15 months. Works great.
Woot! Woot!
I can’t wait to get in front of a computer and check it out! That’s great news! Thanks for sharing!
Great information - Thanks! I Ordered Starlink Dec 7th and it arrived in March and we really enjoy it! Much better then what we had.
That was fast!! Awesome!
They do have roaming available for RVrs now, the people using the roaming are real happy so far
Mine just came on this week. Looking forward to testing it this weekend! Right now I am 33 miles from my registered location and it is working pretty well. I say "pretty well" because my download speeds are as good as ever (~200 mbs) download but my upload is really low -- about 1mbs. More this weekend...
@@ScruffyGolden did you move your location services or just the satellite?
I played with both to see what would happen. I even drove 45 miles away from my registered address to see what would happen. Both versions worked great!

Up here in Alaska many towns and villages sure could use it.
Forgive me for throwing a video at you, but this video has more info on finding an address than I can type: ua-cam.com/video/xyoMBEo7jt4/v-deo.html
At this point, once you have the equipment, you can simply use it in a national forest.

What about those of us who live in the Caribbean?
So if there are these actual Starlink satellites in space shouldn't you have coverage pretty much anywhere??
I'm not a satellite expert, but I think the fact that these are low orbit satellites reduces the amount of ground they can cover compared to higher orbit satellites?
How well does it work under heavy cloud cover. In florida using Direct TV service would drop once storm clouds moved in.
Is Starlink any different?
Skynet looks really great for everyone!
Mine still shows it shipping this month - hopefully.

Awesome! I love hearing from people who put these things to work. Thanks for sharing!
Can you roam into areas that appear simply dark? The middle of the ocean? The Bahamas? Is it worth installing on your cruising sailboat yet?
In the Zone your service adress is located.. that zone is about 100km+ in size.(from the center)
Can't fly satellite over military locations, like New Mexico.
Someone clue me in yesterday that NM is now covered! Woot! Woot!
interesting, but I can only assume that the service fails in heavy inclement weather(rain/snow) such as DirectV and other similar services..
Does NOT. Live in remote area of Montana and have not had issues because of weather.
Love the video, but I don't own a starlink yet , I would love to get one earlier as you posted your video on how to do so. But I don't know if I can get service if I moved services. Can you check for me before making the jump?
Hi Brandon. I might lose my spot in my hometown if I did that. Sorry.
Yeah I live in the deep country, the only light green cells near me are an hour and a half away in terms of driving time to that location.
I confess I had to drive 4 ours to get to a location myself. Sounds crazy, but for my situation it has been totally worth it. :-)
Ok, I need help understanding. My area is dark green. We’re rural and really need Starlink. My mom is in the next state over and totally in the light green. Can I change my address to hers and have her ship the equipment to me? Would I be able to get it working where I live? What am I missing?
Would it work if I take my dish to north Africa ?since anyway the satellite do cover that part already ?
I'm sorry, I don't know. How do you know that satellites cover the area? I can only refer to the Starlink map, but north africa looks dark near as I can tell.
How can you move service?? Doesn't the equipment then have to be there?? Please explain as it's not clear. Thanks.

People used to do the same thing with DirecTV in the ‘90s. Canadians would spoof an American address and get American channels.
Makes sense!
I am 2.42 miles away from an "light" cell. They say I should have it by mid 2022 so I guess I'm going to wait.
Ordered mine in March of 2021 for Michigan & still waiting...
Can you check to see if you can move service to anchorage Alaska?
Hi Verne. No service is provided in AK at this time (according to Starlink). Looks like a big no. Sorry.
-Scruffy
@@ScruffyGolden Thank you appreciate the assistance,
Been loving mine I've had it for 4 months now.
Glad to hear it. What part of the country or world?
What elevation does the satellite exist? thanks
What's going on in the South half of New Mexico? That's about as rural as it gets. Hard to believe the entire section is over capacity.
How do i turn on my mobile? Mine is not on..... And why do I want it to say mobile, can you explain a little more about that? Thanks for the video.
@@mcarpenter2917 I wonder how far you can take it from your home?

Yours might be the first one I've seen that has moved up! That's any day now!
how close to the edge of service will work? Is ten miles too much?
To use it within the registered service location, yes, 10 miles would fall outside of that by a long shot. Starlink did release portability last week which might work for you, but probably only short term? Not sure of your specific situation, but this video might help:
ua-cam.com/video/EbeeBkDrtvY/v-deo.html
So, why if you know why isn't Starlink available all over the United States.
Nope! It's automatic.
He's probably a car salesman. Lots of hype, seems their baliwick.
frustrating i am still waitlisted but my spot is light green
Still don't understand slocomb al all dark green guy order his a week later recieved!!! I'm on 14th month. HOW???????????????????
Sir
Can anyone tell me how far away from the bright green area, into the dark green area you can get service ?
Thanks
To my knowledge there's no knowing. Sometimes the cells are spot on with their accuracy, and sometimes the edges are a little fuzzy, and sometimes you can go deeply in the dark green.
Thanks, I am 15 to 18 miles from service. I've heard 10 miles. I didn't know if that was true or not.
My order was just confirmed and being shipped to me but the map still shows im in a dark area, any ideas what that could mean?
One possibility is that Starlink could be filling orders when subscription slots become available and you were at the front of the line. It could also mean that your area just got new additional satellite coverage but the website hasn't caught up that information or that the additional coverage wasn't enough to fulfill all of the outstanding orders. One thing I do know, however, Starlink guarantees service at the location you registered so whatever it means, you will have functioning Starlink soon. Congratulations!!
Why does starlink not use GPS coordinates instead of addresses?
I really don't understand it either, but on some level plus codes give every spot on the earth a physical address. I know plus codes are also open source so maybe Starlink used them simply because they could? Not sure...
Elon, could you pry your self awayfrom Twritter for a day or so and see if you can do something about the BACKORDER/SHORTORAGE on the EATHERNET ADAPTORS for STARLINK, I waited 14 months to get my system and now I can't use it without the EATHERNET ADAPTOR.
It is definitely an awesome service
It really is!
@@ScruffyGolden I'll wait then.
@@ScruffyGolden Thanks..
Enjoy!
Star link!!😂😂 As stars are static it make sense!
They should have called it 'Spirit link'... As they move around freely😊👍😂
@@stillatwork thx
You comment about Canada is wrong. While most of Canada is bright green on the map, nobody lives there. Most Canadians live in the dark green blob of southern Ontarion. Toronto (and surrounds), Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, and Winnipeg all appear to be dark green. That would be about 90% of the Canadian population.
Thanks for correcting me. I knew that about Australia and checked for it there, but didn't know that about Canada. Appreciate it.
Those are mining or other locations that will have winter road access only.
seems most non service spots are over no fly zones in us. Like white sands.
Yeah, I think you are onto something. I forgot there is a concentration of those in southern NM, aren't there?
I've been using the roaming the last couple of weeks, now, and it takes Starlink to a whole 'nother level. Tell us how it works in the boat!!
You can now roam. If the cell is busy you may get reduced speeds if you are outta your cell.
Hi Fondel. Roaming is proving to be absolutely fantastic. Lately I am not even seeing a reduction in speeds (or latency) even when my registered address is thousands of miles away.
I'm 30 miles south of the Great Sand Dunes, why us it they won't ship me a dish?
Hi Bill. If you are trying to receive the equipment out there, I made a video EXACTLY for that situation that will absolutely help!

Great info, but I need that shirt 😂 where did you get it
Hi showier. I don’t remember at the moment. I think it was a gift from my wife. I’m traveling right now but I’ll check the brands when I get home and let you know. My wife will be thrilled! Lol
Can you use a VPN with starlink?
Starlink is a winner!
It is! I agree!!
Yay starlink mobility live!
Hooray is right!!!
omg thank you sooo much! I am going to see if I can place an order in the light area then move it to my dark area lol
You are very welcome!
I live in Australia and they will not let you give you a mobile setup
Does that mean you can't change your address in Australia?
@@ScruffyGolden
Yeah I can change a home address but they will not let me roam. I think is the term
Have you tried putting it in roaming mode?

Starlink services seem to be changing by the month!
why didn't you show us how to get to the page of moving your service around
To be honest, that hadn't occurred to me. Would you find that useful? If anyone would find this useful, please hit the thumbs up on this comment. Am happy to do a video on that subject. Thanks for the feedback!
It's a pity that there is zero coverage for Greece and the islands.
That stinks. Hopefully they get is soon!
Tell how it works for gaming?
Hello BigFoot. I'm not a gamer myself so I don't know firsthand, but I suspect the latency is a problem for heavy gamers in most cases. You might check me on that, though.
Very Helpful. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
