Thank you for doing this. Everything you mentioned has be running through my mind since November. How did you choose? Could we not be reallocate somewhere else? Was it role specific or just a number of people to cut? I told my staff we were okay, not to worry, the company put systems in place to make sure blah blah .... 😑 The worst part was seeing others expressing empathy to the CEO for having to make such a hard decision 😕 Anyway, thanks again. 😊
I hear you. I remember when my company did the first round of layoffs in early 2022, they said they cut a large amount to prevent future layoffs - didn’t hold true at all, as they proceeded to do several more rounds six months later. Quite interesting to me to see how seemingly bad the planning is in general for all of these cuts 😅 Perhaps everyone is just doing it because others are and keeping stakeholders happy. Hope you are okay, please take care and thanks for watching 🤍
At the end of the day, G is a business. They can put on the happy face , but at the end of the day they’re going to do what they gotta do. Companies are not humane. I didn’t get laid off but i did get royally screwed over by my employer when Covid hit. I’m still paying for it today. I often think about what happened and how could a company be so evil but I now realize it’s not “the company”. These are decisions made by people . Self serving people. People are going to do what people do. If they’re bad people, they do bad things.
I’m really sorry to hear that - and I hear you. This was definitely my first time seeing something like this in mass that it was surprising for me, but now I’ve learned a lot moving forward.
not just now, every IT company always cut your access, so you couldnt sabotage anything. If 1 percent of disgruntled fired employees did that, it would cause massive damage.
I understand that - and it’s probably the “safest” way for companies to protect themselves. I just find it hypocritical that when an employee leaves, they have to give notice but the company won’t honor that regardless of being on maternity/pay leave, disability leave, tenure, performance, whatever it may be.
@@Sakurambo well most of that couldnt happen legally here in Europe :) they actually WOULD cut your access, but you would still get paid until your contract ends. But tenure/performance - nobody cares. Expect no loyalty. I see this a kinda wrong mindset. You are an equal party with the employer. You sell your time and services, and they buy it as long as they need to, and you both can cancel any time for any reason. For me there are absolutely no hard feelings when it happens (and no positive feelings when I work there).
@@bobzeepl ah yes, strong labor laws 😂🙌 and definitely! I think after years of working in corporate, I’ve come to that realization that at the end of the day work is a means to an end, and a business transaction. I think big tech companies have tried to sell this idea of a people-first culture when in reality, it’s simply not true. The employees take care of each other, but the company will always always put itself first. Not anything wrong with that as long as the employee manages the same expectations. I just wished things could be better for employees one day in these kind of situations. Thanks for your perspective :)
@@Sakurambo btw I got laid off yesterday :D and I am suing for unjust termination (which I will win, never any verbal or written warning, even less so sth like a personal improvement plan, I am well protected from such BS - yes, strong labor laws)
Company goals: 1) Why over hire in the first place is to dry out the swamp keep the availability of competition low suck in all the talent just to clear the space 2) Why stop now - it got really expensive, it isn't sustainable and the marketing hit is low because everyone else is doing it also ChatGPT and others is out to make software development much more accessible the dry out strategy had to end.
Love your perspective on this! It is cruel, but doing layoffs of that size makes it impossible to do it over hot coco with every single person. It could have done a week earlier through managers of those people or is some more humanly way. In the end what those businesses have shown their ex-employees (and current employees) was that they were/are just a number in a cell in someone's spreadsheet. Will they learn anything from that, because pretty much everyone lost respect for those companies - most likely not. I think they can now remove tab 'values' from their websites because they don't mean a damn thing.
You hit the nail on the head. I’m not sure if having 1-1 convos would be feasible, but I thought something like giving a month advance notice period of layoff would be reasonable? If an employee gives notice and the company allowed them to work until departure, I feel like the company should be able to do the same. Or allow voluntary resignation with severance first. I also understand cutting off access immediately is “safe” for companies, but I just feel there is probably a better alternative that’s not so black and white. At the end of the day, we are a number. I hope things will change in the future but I’m not sure if companies will ever have the incentive to.
@@Sakurambo Excatly! A lot of ex-employees are on work visas and now have very limited time to find jobs in order to maintain the permits! I jus wonder how the organizations came to conclusion that those are the people they need to cut off - was it just strictly revenue related, bad business decisions, picked up those who don't perform that well - like what was the decision making process and criteria. Some people say they want to invest in their own AI, but I think in the end it will nib them in the butt. For people leaders/managers it's like a slap in the face as they put all hard work towards their teams just to have it taken away.
Thank you for watching and for your kind words :) I’m very privileged to be in a stable position, so don’t worry I am just fine. I just hope the folks who have more to lose like VISAs, health insurance, etc can land back on their feet soon.
Decision made so no point arguing about abrupt dismissal. Forget about old fashioned loyalty and kindness. Look for other jobs. Continuously hop to jobs that pays you more. Look for the highest bidder for your ideas and move on as suits YOU.
This reminds me of the James Franco meme "First Time?". Word of advice, stop dwelling on it and move on. Stay your 3 to 5 years so that companies vestments kick in and look for something else. Keeps you hungry for better opportunities and away from being complacent
great meme 😆 for sure, for me a lay off is certainly not the end of the world and something I know I'll get through and rather a new opportunity, which is extremely privileged. However lots of folks on limited time VISAs, disability leave, paternity/mat leave, sending money to take care of their families, I think are the ones that have the most to lose. Hope they are ok.
I feel like this will also be so interesting to look back upon in 3-5 years. Have the tech industries lost something in the process of these kind of lay offs. I remember that massive layoffs happened in Sweden in one of our biggest companies and they have so much harder now to recruit top talent.
Absolutely. This past year has been full of these tech layoffs, it will be interesting to see how this will affect the "talent wars," perception & reputation of the tech industry, and HR practices. Wondering if anything will change or we will cycle through this again in the future. Thank you for watching!
For my personal layoff, I had a feeling. In my case the whole country (Japan) operations was laid off, which in hindsight makes sense as it most likely wasn’t profitable to the organization comparatively to US and other markets. I also saw many people in the tech industry getting laid off, so I knew I was not immune - luckily because of this, I prepared myself financially and it wasn’t so shocking. For Google layoffs? I had a feeling it might happen as most other tech giants did the same, and it seemed like everyone is following each others footsteps. But no one knew. Especially knowing people in various tenure & positions got cut, bad performance wasn’t an indicator. I would say the most reasonable way to see if you’re “safe,” is asking yourself if your position/department is profitable as well as something the company would most likely invest in (as many others have mentioned, possibly something like AI). Just my two cents 🙂
As someone who experienced multiple layoffs, either company out of business or just layoff in my 20s, you guys are snowflake. Seriously, working for big companies with high pay and living fancy life style doesn't mean it is forever. It is time to wake up people.
Sorry to hear you’ve been through multiple layoffs. You’re right, people in big tech may have better severance payouts and job opportunities after their lay off which make them more privileged. I think you misunderstood my point. These companies attracted good talent because of selling their culture and benefits and it’s ironic that the words haven’t meant much when it came to the matter of layoffs. Just because some people seemingly have it better though, doesn’t discount the reality for folks in general cut from things like mat leave, or especially those who have to find a way to stay in the country with a visa, and multiple decade tenured folks losing their life’s work. ’m not advocating for only tech workers, I don’t care what industry you’re in, everyone deserves better. Wish you all the best.
i guess this is your first time being fired. ive got fired once when i was a kid 16-17. being told youre not needed or youre not good enough it always hurts. but your boss, company the world even GOD does not owe you anything . no under standing ,no sorry. this is normal life normal world stuff hitting you in the face maybe for the first time in you life at 35 years old.i never like seeing any person lost their job. but you got to put you big girl pants on and go back to work. best to you and yours

It is what it is. Take what you have learned and move on. No company need to care about their ees.

So many decisions. So many questions. I got laid off from Microsoft too 😢 made a video about it. Check it out
Superb video 👍👍👍👍
