- I bought a 1994 Lexus LS400 with 240k miles on it.
Buying a high mileage car can be scary, do you think buying a 240,000 mile Lexus was a bad idea?
Being a mechanic, I'm less intimidating by things falling apart, but it still can cost alot of money to fix these cars!
This car will be my daily driver, and I'm already pretty committed to it, so this doesn't mean this is the right car for you!
Taking my first steps into cleaning, registering and enjoying this vehicle! I clean this vehicle in and out, and inspect as well as look for common problems that this car may have.

Be weary of the capacitors in the ECU of that LS400. They are known to budge and leak after 20 years causing the dash light to go out and have a no start condition. The worse part is that the fluid from the leaking capacitors will destroy the ECU if it’s not resolved soon.
I have for sure heard alot about this issue and I'm keeping my eye out. At 266k now, Im not sure if itll happen soon or maybe its already been done? idk. But its good to know for sure!
@@ClaytonBridges any advice for a new owner?
1997-2000 model has that problem too?
I've had my LS400 for 24 years...no finer car ever made.
So true. Thats a long run!
How many miles on it after 24 years?
I've had mine 6 months. Mine's a 2000 (290HP)last of the LS400's but I love it. I just got the rotors and brakes done. Replaced one of the catalytic converters, and got a tune-up..it was due after 250,000 miles and it did not show up on a Carfax..since the previous owner used a private mechanic but the car now runs perfect, does not burn a drop of oil. The 5-speed automatic transmission on the 2000 runs great, always power whenever you need. It
thats awesome! even the earlier ones with less HP still feel like it has plenty of power. Thats great, im glad you're taking care of it!
Hi Clayton. First of all, just want to say thank you for sharing on "How to's" on the Lexus LS400. I have a 1990 Lexus LS400 that's been sitting for a year in my apartments. I had to replace the fan bracket, and you were instrumental in helping me out with that. So I put everything back together after dragging my feet in doing so, but now I have another problem with it. I replaced the negative battery clamp, as the old one was looking corroded and put a brand new batter in it. After putting the positive terminal onto the battery, it sparked as it made contact as I would expect. However no interior lights or anything else came on. I tried to start it, but nothing happened, other than hearing the starter clicking. So the bottom line is, there is no power from the battery getting to the rest of the car. I cant even turn on my headlights and nothing electrical inside has any power. I believe that all the wires and everything else that was disassembled was put back together after bolting up the fan bracket. It seems there might be a ground short or maybe a fuse that fried or something because after trying to hook up the battery again, there was no spark when positive terminal made contact with the post. I bought the battery at walmart using the guide provided with the sales associate and saw with my own two eyes that it is in fact the correct battery- "just to eliminate that possibility of wrong battery". I have to get the car running and was looking very forward to it firing up and doing more work to it as time and finances became available. Not to mention, I love this car and do not want to give up on her. Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated Clayton. Thanks Man!
Looking good will last a long time. Remember Matt going for 1 million miles.
I know! That video inspired me to buy one xD
I have had my 1997 Lexus LS400 since 2000. Original engine, original transmission - keep that timing belt changed every 100,000 miles ! Use a Synthetic oil with Lucas oil stabilizer. I am squeaking 375,000 miles on it so far. It is making a bad noise from the front end, however, I think it is a belt tensioner and a bad fan clutch. It is the best car that I have ever owned, although it does like to use a little gas !
They do use alot of gas indeed. That squeeking could be the idler pulley, mine totally seized on me and shredded the belt. Thays awesome! I need to do a timing belt soon
Dude the sunroof is held in with four bolts and you push it out. Just take off the beige plastic covers. You May need to move the headliner but a 15 min job at most lol
I made a video on the removal of the sunroof!. I replaced it already, check the video out!
As long as it drives well, it’s a good deal!
Its not bad, has a few issues
Exactly
i have a 1994 black ls400 with 240,000 miles on it! still runs like a champ!
yess! Excellent. (T)winning
What about now?
@@Goodyboi whats about now😂
A bit of elbow grease is always a good thing to bring a car up to standard. Well done on your purchase, you may even make a dollar or two when you sell it. I’m a fan of the LS models.
I think its almost kind of saved. And with today's used market, I just might. But im gonna hold onto it for a while until I figure out how to afford something newer
Nice! The LS was designed to be a US car so over here in the UK they're not catered for too well. Most of them get bought to be broken and the engines end up in drift cars!
Always great to see LS content. Subbed and looking forward to more 🙂
Awesome! so glad to hear it! Thats too bad they get treated so poorly. I know mine wasnt looked after all that well
Good job man, these are amazing cars and you can tell how much of a difference it can make getting some of these small jobs done. Parts are cheap, too when you get them used, can't imagine that a good/trunklid and sunroof will be more than a hundred bucks if you can find them locally in the right color.
yeah man! the trunk and hood dont even bother me that much, I may just leave it alone and make sure everything works. Thanks for the comment!
Buy one with 240,000 miles? I bought mine with 287,000 miles...........10 years ago. Still my daily driver, at 380,000 miles. Gets me around daily. Not a weekend toy.
Thats really awesome! Thats quite the milestone
I JUST BOUGHT A '94' WITH 138,K ON IT...UNDER 1000...LISTED @ 2K...LOOKS AND RUNS GREAT...GREAT BUY
Congratulations man!!!
You got a great car. Congrats!
Where did you buy yours at?
The ride alone is worth 1300. What a car. have a 99 with 205K. Subbed.
nice, thank you! That's awesome, such great cars. I can't believe how in love I am
@@ClaytonBridges enjoy, enjoy!
“1500 and I will be talking him down “ I love it 🤣
I bought my 92 Ls400 for 1100 197,000 miles runs like a champ only thing I had to fix was the A/c compressor
Damn awesome! What was wrong with the compressor? Was it hard to find r12?
Clayton Bridges it wasn’t blowing any cool air it basically gave out , my mechanic knocked it all out for about 450$ , he said that and the starter are the only things to worry about
@@ginnjuicce130 so ive heard.. as long as it starts im not worried
I have the same color but I have the 1995 LS400. Bought it for only 2K with 108,000 miles from a senior citizen :) The only problem is leaking power steering fluid but I was able to tighten the hose. I replaced all the fluids, rotors, brake pads and spent 700 $ for the timing belt and water pump. Best investment IMO. My insurance is only 15 $ at Geico. I work graveyard from 10 PM to 6 AM. It cruises like butter on the freeway.
thats awesome! totally great deal! killed it.
Bro I own a Miata and I’m looking at an ls400 with 200k on it rn😂😂 it looks pretty clean no cosmetic damage at all and has a book of all maintenance records
well, I have since sold my Miata (there is a vid on it) but theyre both great cars! I often jokily brag that I owned two of the greatest cars ever made 😂🤣
Congrats. Just got mine!
nice! I enjoy this vehicle so much!
I paid a premium and found a 99 with 100k miles for $5k.
nice! Its really hard to find a lower mileage ls
How has it been? I just bought one with 115k for $6600 it’s in mint condition.
Traction control light on means that it has been intentionally switched off...switch on console .
Thats true. The TRAC light is on, which indicates a fault in the system
@@ClaytonBridges is it fixed? What was wrong? Am shopping around for one.
@@JC-ft4ri no, I pulled codes and they both relate to the throttle position sensor, and theyre a common failure part. I think Im just gonna throw a couple at it and see if it fixes it
"My coffee cup DOESN'T FIT!!!" lml
It ended up breaking 🤣🤣
did you ever figure out the traction control light?
Not definitely.. but I pulled the codes on it and Im pretty convinced a new throttle position sensor will take care of it
Checking the trac fuse is a good start too
Great video, I am a big Lexus fan (few lexus vids if you want to check it out)
Awesome! I will!
Where you from?
Colorado!
Bro am checking out an ls 400 with 216,000 for 300 $ 😁
daaaamn! what's wrong with it?!?! Its hard to go wrong with $300 for a car!
Clayton Bridges runs good just doesn’t go into reverse but it’s straght piped so am going to use it as a drift missle
@@rafavaldes8845 hmm are you going to manual swap it? That works, you'll probably have to weld the diff at least I would think
Clayton Bridges probably just drift it till the trans goes out then look for s Manuel swap
@@rafavaldes8845 awesome, enjoy it!
Just found a 99 with 110k miles for $3.4k😅
not bad! is it nice?
@@ClaytonBridges super clean bro
Epic!
What type of gas do you put in it, just premium?
Yes, here in Colorado its 91 octane. I run 91 in the ls400 and my Miata. From safeway pumps 🤣🤣🤣 I used to only run shell in the Miata to be consistent
I thought I found the Supreme patty when he burned out.
Wait what?! Me?
@@ClaytonBridges yeah you kinda look like him. Lol 😆
dude you are not the first person to say that 😅😅
@@thatguy1522 im worried
Lol just take pictures with people when they ask. Lol thanks for the video. I'm buying a nice LS400 tomorrow for $3,000 guy has put a lot of new parts into it and nice rims and took very good care of it. So the $3,000 is not a problem.
"Decently bad"? 😂🤣😅😂 What does that mean?
hmm like on a scale of 1-10, 10 being really really bad, its like a 7
What happen to your neck bro? Hope your okay
Its a super long story! But I am okay 😁
@@ClaytonBridges that’s good man! Do you still have this Lexus? Any update? Issues anything?
@@klkk3382 It is. I do still have the car, its my daily now. It has some issues for sure! The suspension is kind of clunky and im having trouble tracking it down. Otherwise, not bad!
