  • After putting in a lot of time, we were there when they are biting. Nothing big on this day, but alot of fun!
    In the spring, the flathead catfish swim upstream to spawn. Before and after they go on the nest, they are really hungry and aggressive.

    A low head dam is a very good way to end up dead very quick. Low heads have claimed many many lives over the years. To each their own but anyone else thinking about doing this needs to realize they are taking a very real risk. Great video btw, looked like alot of fun!

    Another great vid mate.
    The catfish we have in Australia have teeth and if big enough can inflict a nasty bite. I keep my fingers well clear of their mouth and extremely painful dorsal spine. Bloody good eating though! Can't wait to see more deer hunting videos. Keep up the good work! Cheers.

    What happens when you hang one about 60 and it rips that gear you have apart?

    • @EFactorOutdoors
      @EFactorOutdoors  5 років тому

      Be careful to be critical right off the bat. Everyone that fishes near us ends up trying to find the rods we use. They are perfect for spilleay fishing or any flathead fishing when you don't need to cast a long way. The gear we are using is twice as strong as that new crap you can buy. We are using vintage spring steel rods with good baitcaster reels and heavy braided line that is like trot line almost. Very very hard to break if you snag it. We have guys snap their high dollar rods next to us while we winch in big ones. The only downside is the spring steel rods will get a permanent bend after a while. We have caught lots of flatheads up to 40# on these rod setups. The best part is the action is so light you can actually feel the flathead moving after he sucks in the bait. Those big rods you'd never even know you had one on unless he is agressive.

    If you would fall over there, would you most likely survive? What if you fall to the back side of the dam? How deep is that?

    • @EFactorOutdoors
      @EFactorOutdoors  7 років тому +1

      Michael Hammer I have fallen off both sides but it is most common to serv someone fall off the backside. I think when someone loses their balance they tend to jump off the backside because it is much less dangerous. However the backside is much deeper. The backside is probably around 10 to 12 feet deep in the front side is around 5 foot deep. The reason the front is more dangerous is because of the turbulent water and about 15 or 20 foot out then it starts getting deeper. If the water is flooded it would absolutely drown someone.and you still have to respect it even when it's low. Another thing to worry about is getting tangled up in broken off fishing line that got snagged up or trotline or things like that. I always make sure to carry a knife that I can get to quick just in case that were to happen

The 40-53 guys were caught in Powerton lake in Pekin Il. fishing hot water outlet with cut asain carp about 10 inch steaks.The asain carp is great flathead bait and easy to get in my area.Nice and bloody,really oily and stays on the hook well.

    Where I live, there is a low-head diversion dam right on the edge of town. I think I'll try your method of bottom fishing a fair-sized sunfish on the bottom. I looks like your terminal rigging is pretty simple and somewhat snag resistant.

Why do you think all of the Night time sound machines, that help people relax and fall asleep, all have running water, rainfall, birds singing, etc? Because it's peaceful noises that soothes the human brain. These sounds have been used by humans since the very beginning, man can't produce better relaxation remedies than mother nature ! These have stood the test of time, and NEVER FAIL !!!

    You ever think about turning around and flipping a sunfish behind/next to the bridge pilling? I fish a similar spot, boulders over a pipe but basically a low head dam. Spillways are money for most species of course but one year I turned around and fished a downed tree's route structure. Flatheads love snaggy wooded areas in the pool above dams and in the spring feed in tailraces. I don't know where you are but on the Ohio and other rivers around here flatheads don't go into pre-spawn mode till late June usually July. The dog days of summer is when the males are guarding they're nests. The females will swim around 50-100 yards after being run off. Male flatheads will spawn and guard their nest several times depending on temps and other factors. I've caught a lot in August that were in between spawns that had lost tons of weight. Good luck and tight lines.

      @christopherb27 8 років тому

      Not many Ski's where I fish except the rivers and your lucky if you catch one. Fishing the low head dam I was talking about we catch Northern Pike frequently. Not big but fun on small tackle. Flatheads below 20 pounds are being caught all day and night on the Ohio. Larger ones and blue cats are biting good during nice days already. We usually don't have water temps this high but spring came early.

    • @EFactorOutdoors

      +Sid Dasquid I suppose if you used a minnow trap to catch some really small baby blue gills, then a crappie would eat it. I haven't crappie fished alot but from what I remember we always used little white jigs or minnows.

    Where is this dam located? Is it in Illinois?

    • @EFactorOutdoors
      @EFactorOutdoors  7 років тому

      +Cheryl Martindale yes sir this is in IL. It’s a smaller river that leads into the Wabash river, which leads into the Ohio River, which leads into the Mississippi. So you can see there is plenty of opportunity for a big fish to swim upstream to this spot.

      +Jason Wildman old vintage metal rods. They are super flexible and little so you feel the bite, but they will not break. We've had one bend permanently but it never broke.

    why you guys using utralight looking rods for flats

    • @EFactorOutdoors
      @EFactorOutdoors  8 років тому

      they are not ultralights. they are old metal rods made from spring steel. They will not break and you can feel the flathead hit and move around. Believe it or not, with the big fiberglass rods, you can't feel the fish on as easy. I will have this years 2016 flathead fishing trip video made within a few weeks and posted. We caught some bigger ones this year and the video will be epic. also I will explain more details about those dumb little poles we use. :)

    • @EFactorOutdoors
      @EFactorOutdoors  9 років тому

      +devilkicln As soon as the fish hit, I turn on the camera. It's all real buddy. The poles are old metal rods. They are flexible so you can feel the flathead bite, but also very strong. They will not break like a modern fiberglass rod. I'm also using strong braided line that won't break. No jacking around...The rod and reel combo allow me to winch the fish in.... Done.
