This building has had a remarkable history since it first opened in 1930. At that time, it was the Headquarters of the I.G. Farben Chemical Cartel. After WWII, it served as Headquarters for Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Allied Commander in Europe. Until 1995, the Building was home to the Army's V Corps. Now, the Building is part of Johann Wolfgang Goethe University - Frankfurt.

I worked here from 1975-1977 for the American Express Military Banking Facility in their Foreign Exchange Dept on the 6th floor. I rode the padernoster elevators multiple times a day. My husband worked on the 4th floor and was in the US Army V Corps HQ. We were working here when the Baader-Meinhof Gang bombed the 1st floor. Dropped a homemade bomb in a US Post Office Letter container in the hallway positioned in front of the PO. Much destruction and chaos. We were gone that week on leave but the destruction was tremendous when we returned to worked. Pockmarked the floors, walls and ceilings and severely damaged the PO. They removed all letter containers after that. You needed to go inside the PO to drop off letters. Several injured and a couple were killed. They also bombed the Terrace Club which was the Officers Club at the time. IDK if they ever caught everyone responsible. Interesting times! I wish I'd thought to get photos of the destruction inside the building but the MPs were very picky about cameras inside the building.

Thanks for sharing that story. I was there in the 1980s and while security was much stronger, a blast at the PX area in the late 1980's reinforced the need to be vigilant

Although I was stationed at VII Corps in Stuttgart, I got to go to this building- the V Corps HQ on a number of occasions. Amazing building- now home to a University.
