  • Evolution Rage 5-S Table Saw - Installing a Soft Start Module.
In this video I will be upgrading my Evolution Rage 5S table saw with a soft start module. Those that got this saw will know how it kicks off when started. I wanted to improve my experience with this saw and extend the life of the motor of this saw by installing a soft start module.

It might be wise to have the soft start module outside of the housing - it's aluminium case acts as a heat sink. I'm thinking about mounting it on the outside of the housing on short stand-offs. Protect the leads with heat shrink.

Wanted to stop by and thank you for the video regarding the rage5 and soft start module install. Browsing you-tube regarding info on the rage 5 I stumbled upon you and the channel. Great work and have even had a look on your website so well done Sir all excellent DIY stuff. I'm very electrical minded and installed my module without any defects to my rage 5 saw and its wiring loom at all. Making my own interconnect cables from the switch to module using spade terminals. So if anything did happen to the my saw unit I could always just simply unplug the module out and reinstate the original wiring back to the switch, keeping the warranty in tact Sir. i will continue browsing the channel and taking note of some of the things you do, #KeepUpTheGoodWork🤘🤘kind Regards Paul

In spite of tightening the nut as much as possible I’ve had clear evidence of the blade slipping which I suspect was in starting the saw. Clear signs of metal galling and tearing on the faces of the bosses which I’ve then had to file flat again.

A bit of constructive feedback on your video though:
1 - Your hands are obscuring a lot of the detail while your explaining the wiring.

Hehe seems that way. I was recently looking into the blade guard as I bought myself a 3d printer like a year ago. And was thinking about printing one. But so far I'm to dumb to do it lol but I'll get there. With the dust it's mainly spraying from the bottom and now I'm thinking of building a bench and just mount it to the bench that will act as an outfeed table. So I would try to tackle the dust extraction at that point.

While I had it upside down, I added some very thin flexible plastic sheet (0.5mm) & Gorilla Tape along the side and back of the dust shroud. Nice modification, not sure if this a scare generated by the "Safety Hysterical Instructional Trolls" (shits for short) but Chocolate strips can loosen over time if not fixed down. You're going to get much less vibration now anyhoo, but might be prudent to check it after a bit of usage.

There is never enough safety to be honest. I don't want my workshop and house to burn down and I'm not all knowing. Good tips and feedback are always welcomed here for my own sake and for benefit of others. Now, everyone has got a brain and responsibility to look after themselves and make safety amendments as they deem fit. Some of the tips and feedback are worth while others may be over the top and maybe they are required in a full on factory but not necessary in a small workshop. Its a vide topic to cover really and everyone got their opinion on it. But yes I don't think we need to go over the board with it. All the best mate.

I'd also get a cheap crimping tool, done right it's a solid connection but you really need to form the crimp down in one go.

@@CasualDIY good job. I believe that in aviation/ F1 etc they just crimp connectors, the right connector / wire combination and crimping tool (£hundreds) forms a cold weld between the connector and the wire. If you then solder this the solder wicks along the wire and forms a stress point for vibrations, just crimped you don't get the stress point. For the quality of crimps / tools we're using and because we're not seeing the vibrations they will I think a crimp then running enough solder to just wet the joint is the best solution. Probably. Keep up the good work.

I cannot understand wiring diagrams at all. However, ignoring wire colours but connecting my module according to wire locations, (where you have a blue wire, I have a red, where you have a red next to the black, I have a blue), it now works. In other words, where you connected the red onto the switch, I connected blue instead. My red was then connected to the blue on the switch. Black was connected as you indicated. Hope I described it OK.

The easiest way to do it is to get access to the on/off switch, locate which wires that are attached to the switch are coming from the motor of the saw. We only need those wires. And then make sure to locate which wire is live and neutral. And then you connect as I show in the video. Although it all depends which slow start module you got as it may be bit different
