Can The Royal Enfield Classic 350 Climb a Shivering Mountain?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 гру 2022
- Today the Royal Enfield Classic 350 takes on Mam Tor in the Derbyshire Peak District. Known as the Shivering Mountain, due to the frequent landslips, Mam Tor was used by Royal Enfield in the advert film for the Meteor.
This is one of my all time rides, starting in Hope, we take the road to Edale and the Penny Pot Café.
After a coffee and cake break it’s back on the bike to climb the mountain. The views are mind-blowing looking down the Edale Valley. Snaking up the slopes the view explodes as we cross the summit.
It’s then down Winnats Pass, through Castleton back to Hope.
So shut out the bad weather, grab a cuppa and let’s have a ride

It's not sleek, not nimble, not fast. Doesn't have a 1000 cc engine. But the smile it brings just being itself, no fancy gadgetry...plain simple motorbiking.❤️
Hi, thanks for the comment, 100% agree, it's as close to old style pure motorcycling as a modern bike can get. Ride safe, Dave
@@thatblokeonamotorbike better then classic 500?
With a lot of big bikes it often becomes more about enjoying the bike than enjoying the ride but the 350s, they are good enough to accompany you through the ride and humble enough to not intrude it...
Hi, that is a fantastic way to sum up the Classic 350, I wish I had thought of it. Happy New Year, ride safe, Dave
Nicely said Vibhu bro.
Got my Classic Halcyon black yesterday
@@rvanoop Enjoy your new bike, ride safe, Dave
That journey brought back some memories - I had to travel Macclesfield to Sheffield every day for 3 months back in the mid 70's while we were in the midst of moving and waiting for our house purchase to finalise. Lovely journey, even done in a car (it was Autumn!). Thanks for the video. Recently sold my ZZR and thinking of the classic 350 as we live in North Wales now and at my age (70) reactions are not what they were 10 years ago, so I think this would be ideal.
Hi Stuart, the Classic 350 would be a brilliant bike for the roads in North Wales. I'm planning a trip there later in the year on mine to film the fantastic rides. Ride safe, Dave
I have ridden my 1999 HD Sportster 883 for 25 years and 400,000 miles on the original engine. It runs cool 😎 as a cucumber in FLORIDA in the summer. Not fast but it does last.
That was my biggest worry when I bought my classic 350 , fearing it would struggle up the twisty mountains where I live in Carinthia, Southern Austria , thankfully I needn’t have worried , it laughs at them !
Lovely ride-a-long TBOAM. Thanks for sharing this beautiful scenery with us, and those roads look perfect for the RE Classic 350. Ride safe my friend. 👍
Hi, thanks for the comment, they are perfect roads for the Classic. I would love to hear a convoy of them up there, it would be amazing. Ride safe, Dave
Absolutely charming ride Dave. Thank you. Oh, how far away those warm October days seem, now that we are the grip of this arctic blast. Brrrrr. Roll on Spring
Hi Dave, they do feel a long way off. It's worth freeing though to ride there whatever the weather. Ride safe, Dave
@@thatblokeonamotorbike Indeed it is Dave. I went out for a short ride, 2 days ago in the frost and it was lovely. Always enjoy your videos.
What a great variety of scenes? Stark beauty, natures size, the scale & detail...Thank you! (No wonder you get there every august!)
I too never tire of that ride and even better after the Strines and followed with the Snake ( and its not even in Yorkshire !!!!) Thanks , Andrew.
Hi Andrew, ho yes, definitely a good ride that. And with the snake closed to over 7.5 ton at the moment even better. Do you stop off at Derwent dam for a cuppa and burger? Ride safe, Dave
If I'm feeling posh I'll go to the David Mellor ( cutlery factory) cafe in Hathersage after the pleasant minor road loop under Stanage Edge via Ringinglow. Shame the Ladybower Inn hasn't been open this last year and no havn't stopped by the reservoir for a burger yet. We take the Edale valley for granted as it's so close but it really looked impressive in your film. Cheers.
@@andrewlindley837 they are all cracking roads. The David Mellor factory is good to look around as well. His design for road furniture is everywhere, from traffic lights to bush shelters.
I went past the Ladybower Inn last week and there was some activity inside so fingers crossed they might have got the problems sorted and be open soon
Thank you for a great video. What fantastic scenery and the sound of the Enfield is superb. I have recently purchased the 350 classic and agree with all of the comments, simple, basic old school bike. But the smile it puts on my face when I go out is worth its weight in gold. Looking forward to your next video. Thanks again.
Hi Geoffrey, thanks for the comment, one thing the Classic 350 does better than anything else is put a smile on your face. Enjoy your bike and ride safe, Dave
breathtaking view, thanks a million for the upload.
This is an area that I'm getting to know really well now. I have a route from home to Macclesfield, Rainow, Kettleshume, Whalley Bridge, Chapel en le Frith, Edale, Hope and Hathersage then onto Grindleford cafe for a cuppa and chip butty. Winats Pass is stunning and have memories going up the pass flat out doing 17mph flat out on a scooter hoping to make it to the top without stopping! Lovely countryside I never get bored of exploring.
The chip butties are legendary, enough to feed a family and always a warm welcome. Have you read all the notices at back of the counter?
If you haven't tried it, have a look at the Penny Pot cafe in Edale, follow the road to the station and it's on the right.
Ride safe, Dave
@@thatblokeonamotorbike I didn't know about the Penny Pot and will put it on my list of cafe's. I hadn't seen the notices in the Station cafeWent to the Yonderman on Sunday and had the steak and onion bagette with a pile of chips. Very tasty. The cafe in Longnor has now closed only leaving the chippie.
@@AliasMrHackenbacker All this talk abut bikes and food, I need to get out on the bike lol
I've been up to over 17,000 feet / 5000m on an older 500, two up with bags and all. Never had a problem, in the Himalayas. The right balance of power, weight, charm and pinnache.
Hi David, thanks for watching and commenting. I never had any doubts it would do it, I have an older 350 bullet made in India for the Indian market with pre-unit engine. I have it fitted to a sidecar ive taken it to the lakes and it plodded round the Langdale loop, Kirkstone and Honister Pass with no problems.
I would love to ride in the Himalayas on a Royal Enfield, it must be absolutely amazing. Ride safe, Dave
I love my BSA 250 singles in all their various incarnations. They are the real thing not an imitation. Beautiful , light weight, reliable, and a joy to ride. A pure motorcycle not a collection of government regulations on 2 wheels. If you were riding a 350 RE in the 1950's it was because all the big bikes were shipped to the USA . Funny how times have changed.
Lovely ! Been a few years since I was down that end, mainly because I habitually head north to the Trough of Bowland and the Lakes. I'll re-visit next year for sure. I'd forgotten how gorgeous it is south of Manchester.
Hi Stu, thanks for the comment, it is worth the ride down.
I have the Trough of Bowland in my sights for next year. Ride safe, Dave
Once again another great video. Love those stone built walls back breaking work for sure. Beautiful scenery and listening to that purring of the Enfield is a great way to spend the day or days. Well done and keep staying upright
Hi Ron, last year when I stayed in Edale for SpoonFest I had a go at drystone walling, very hard work but the satisfaction is amazing. I do ride there jsut to listen to the Enfield purring up the hills. Ride safe, Dave
They are called dry, stone walls, by the way.
Lovely to re-live that route on a cold winters day! One of my favourite rides too Dave, ( on a Halcyon Black 350) over from Sheffield, we often cycle in the summer too, but turn round at Edale after a Drink, and don't brave the big hill!.
Those bends up to Mam Tor are a bit unforgiving in the opposite direction, much prefer the direction you took, though that T junction at the top is where I almost dropped the bike on the left hand turn first time i went over, totally misjudged the camber!
Super quality video
Just as an afterthought, have been so impressed with the engine braking on the Classic 350, fantastic for such a small engine no need to brake going down Winnats . Ride safe🦄
Hi Pete, riding the route in the other direction |I love the view as you crest Mam Tor and the vista opens out of nowhere. Those bends are good, on the way down a bit of counter steer and let the engine do the work. On my Mighty BMW R1150RT you have to be a bit firmer with the counter. I went down a couple of weeks ago in the campervan, it was covered in snow that woke me up. It's always a coffee at Penny Pot in Edale.
Maybe see you down there and ride up together, that would sound good. Ride safe, Dave
Luvly stuff again, hear you have that icy, snowy thing over there, I think I'll stay where I am for now! Cheers DINO.
Hi Dino, we do have the cold weather hear, -2 today and frost has not cleared all day. Send some of that sun you have over here lol Ride safe, Dave
I just love the sound of this bike. Sounds way more powerful than it is.
Hi it does sound really good, ride safe, Dave
I like the bike a lot like to see it with a sidecar had a lot of 350 jawa combs in the past this seems perfect never been a speed merchant just sit back and injoy the ride great video
What a gorgeous area, thank you for taking us along.
Hi, Glad to have you alone with me. There are more rides and tours coming. Ride safe, Dave
A crackin ride that Dave, and you where right about those views, just superb 👌 . Another ride you’ve got for me right there for next year, thanks for that Dave 👍🏻
Hi, glad you enjoyed it. It's definitely worth a visit. The "Penny Pot" is a brilliant coffee shop in the village, and the Ramblers pub do good meals. Places to eat are how I give directions, not pubs, a mate of mine says I have a "SnapNav" lol. Ride safe, Dave
Is that even a question? In india this bike is used a lot to travel to ladakh which is at the foothills of himalayas, so you can imagine the type of roads present over there and it works like a charm
Yes they do ride in the Himalayas with them. These bikes can go anywhere, the title refers to the Shivering Mountain, another name for Mam Tor in Derbyshire. The same road Royal Enfield used in the Meteor advert.
Ride safe, Dave
Great video Dave, nice and informative, and covering one of my favourite local(ish) rides. A valley full of mixed memories for me, harking back to my years in mountain rescue. Thanks for this. (great channel too) 👍
Hi Martin, thanks for the comment, I love it there. Each August I get to spend a week in Edale at SpoonFest spoon carving event, it's my hippy week lol
Wonderful video. Thank you.

Another cracking ride out, been nearly 50 years since I went down speedwell, still got a bit of blue John and can remember walking up winnats pass as part of the D of E scheme 🥵 ( good to hear winnats pronounced properly ) you’ve definitely got the right bike for those roads, looking forward to seeing future rides 👍

Really enjoyed the video, great scenery.
Hi Andrew, thanks for the comment, really appreciate it. Ride safe, Dave
I an amazed by the hedges along the roads in England that block the scenery.
Hi, they are part of ancient field boundaries. Some go back thousands of years.
I'm open moorland areas they are divided by miles of Drystone walling. Stones collected from the area and built into walls without using any cement, held together by the way each stone interlocks with the others
Ride safe, Dave
Pretty scenery! Thanks
You'd be amazed at the roads where I live in New Zealand: Steeper hills, tighter corners and more dramatic views. I must get my bike fitted with a camera.
Hi, thanks for the comment, New Zealand sounds really good, I would love to ride over there, maybe one day I will. Get a camera on your bike and share your rides. Ride safe, Dave

Another wonderful ride, Dave. Your knowledge of the area makes for such an interesting video.
I did a cycle tour in this area when I was much fitter (younger!) and it's wonderful to see it all again from the saddle, so to speak.. Great to see that you also wear a bright green /yellow jacket too. The RE 350 engine sounds lovely.- slightly different exhaust note from my Meteor but essentially the same
Oh and thank you for telling me that was the road used for the Meteor ad. I loved it and now I know where it is. Like you it seemed familiar. Great stuff
Glad you enjoyed it, I went round there today, this time in my campervan. Lots of snow in the fields but roads were ok. Ride safe, Dave
My other half used to be the postie for Hope and Edale. Not an easy job especially in the winter but she loved it.
Hi, if ever I win the Lotto I will be moving to Edale. I fell in love with the place the first time I went there. It's only an hour from me so I get the chance to go when I want. The road up Mam Torr is epic, no wonder Royal Enfield picked it for their advert. Ride safe, Dave

I have seen Royal Enfield motorcycles (Bullet 350 and 500) climbing the slopes of Himalayas from Manali to Leh over Taglangla Pass @ 17500 ft. They can surely cope with any hill in England. 😁
It's been a while since I've taken the Edale road. Must head back there soon. Beautiful area. I did ride through the Winnats Pass a few weeks ago though.
We just acquired Garbing heated vests - 7v battery units. They are amazing! It’s the difference between riding cold and riding in the cold. For sure, a must have. Unless one likes leaving the bike in the garage for the winter!!

Greetings from SW New Mexico, U.S. I really enjoyed this video. The countryside reminds me of what I imagined Tolkien's Hobbits' home to be like. My last bike was an Indian-made Bullet 500. and I loved it. Also had a Virago 500, only available for one year here, but a perfect size for me. We have a wonderful road through the mountains too, called the Black Range, east of Silver City. Thanks.
Hi, thanks for the comment. Not sure if it would have influenced Tolkien but he did have connections with Yorkshire. He was stationed n Roos new the Easy Yorkshire coast during WW1, then sent the the Somme where he was wounded. He convalesced in Hull then after the was lectured as a professor in the 1929's at Leeds University. He took an interest in the Yorkshire accent and dialect, most of it coming from a mix of Old Norse and Anglo-Saxon.
For example: Woodhouse in Leeds - pronounced wooduss - from wudu wasa, woodwose or wildman of the woods.
The university is only about 5 miles from me and Roos about 60 miles. I wonder if it did influence him especially the language.
There will be more rides from the area coming, I will do a ride to Roos and the east coast so you can see what he would have experienced.
Happy New Year, ride safe, Dave
@@thatblokeonamotorbike Thanks for the info! I always wondered how P.G. Wodehouse was pronounced; perhaps the same. Wildman of the woods...I like that! I look forward to your next ride. Happy New Year!

I envy the enthusiasm for these little bikes but even at 64 I like”some” performance around of 70bhp is my sweet spot. I craved a 250 after my FS1e and after passing test got a 500 and so on. I always craved a bit more power. I have had some hyper bikes which are a total waste in uk now. "I like spoon-carving" is not an expression that you hear very often... 😄
Hi, yes I grant you it's not a phrase you hear every day, unless you're a spoon carver! Somehow the Classic 350 would look right at home there. Ride safe, Dave
Satisfy my curiosity. With a passenger on the back, would you still have been able to get on safely or would the bike have struggled?
Hello.
Do you have a navigator from your left side ?
Noobie question here. I'm considering of getting one RE Classic 350 when the time comes. Does the recently released RE Classic 350 have any of the old school problems? (sprag clutch, wiring harness, starter motor problem, rust whatever most of those problems mean).
*If this bike can climb and survive a trek up in Ladakh, it can survive anywhere.*

done all the sportbike rushing etc.... now im 58 i enjoy the fact that i have slowed down.. and take far more interesting lanes to enjoy.. its not all about speed suprisingly.... ease up and actually sink into the scenery... nobody cares about your race rep or if yav had your knee down... get back to 'pleasure' biking not sport-biking...... i can see meself getting one of these...if only it had 28bhp i like taking the missus out on back

30 mph up a hill is a test? why not a real test like 65mph up a hill because it won't do it. your sad
65 up that road would be dam right dangerous, there are blind bends, walkers and cyclists using that road, not to mention being 5mph over the speed limit. So I see it as safe and not sad. And before you think I only ride at low speed, I have ridden and driven on emergency blue light response far in excess of the posted speed limit, to pick up the remains of riders going too fast in the wrong place. Stay safe, Dave
